We are Beau and Brandy and we have spent the last 5 years living full time and sailing on our all electric sailboat, Saoirse. She is a 1971 Pearson 35’.
Great video. My wife and I got to the point where we bought our dream boat, did some work to make her sea worthy (the boat, not my wife) started sailing off the coast of California, made plans to join our buddy boats to Mexico last Fall, then WHAM my wife was diagnosed with stage four cancer. Today we sit in Southern California fighting cancer. So I must say this video, you guys bring us so much joy as we can fully relate to you. We are living vicariously thru you and a few other You Tube sailors, for the time being, until the wind once again fills our sails. Fair winds, be well.
I just about spit my coffee out when Beau said “my nipple hurts”.
😂🤣

If you knew it all up front you might newer have taken the leap. That would have been a loss for all of us.
Take care and wish you fair winds and happy days. Thanks for sharing your adventures with us 🙏
Awww you are too sweet ! 🥰
This should be an e-book with QR codes to visuals/videos of many of these moments you've so beautifully captured and articulated. Many a-want-to-be sailor will value your experience and won't regret the purchase.
Wow!! That’s super nice of you to say. That sure is a great idea!
@BeauAndBrandy Thank you. Well, what are you waiting for? Get on it. You already have most of it written with the superb narration for your videos. All the best to you both. 😃
Thanks for the video I'm a long time follower, some of the old clips really hit me. Thanks Beau and Brandy I wouldn't be the sailor I am today, or own the boat i have now if it weren't for finding this channel many moons ago. Wish you two the very best just like always⛵
This is so nice to hear!! Gave me goosebumps reading it!! So happy you are out here experiencing this too!
Beau always ♥️ is like the King and I Yule Brenner and you Brandy are the " Princess of Egypt! " at Sea 🌊 💙 ❤
One of the great benefits of being a single handler is you don't have to communicate. Now that I sail with my family, things that used to be easy are hard because I am not good at describing things. I'm trying to get better and am realizing the need for training my family on stuff before we leave port. Even if they know it, it's good to go over it before we leave.
So true!
Nicely done Brandy, I am so impressed by how you guys have really found out how to live the sailing life. It breaks a lot of people.
Cheers Warren
Thanks Warren, we are still learning every day!
This was probably the most real and insightful sailing video I've ever seen! As an aspiring cruiser...THANK YOU...looking forward to your journey and my own!
Great! Each of these points could have its own video! You guys have a lot to share. Thanks for including us.
Thanks so much guys!
Oh my goodness, that was a great compilation of your adventures/struggles (I remember so many of those scenes). Great educational conversation guys! The truth is exposed. 🤣🤓 Be well, mates.
Thanks so much! It was fun going through all the footage!
Reality !! Lovely presentation. Just like being there.
Thanks a lot 😊 happy to have you along!! ⛵️
Good stuff, thanks for the narration. Safe travels…
Thanks for the pointers! This will help us a lot when we start cruising after were done rebuilding our 65' power catamaran!!
Good morning guys. As always, another fantastic video. You are by far my favorite channel. I for one appreciate the fact your videos are primarily sailing and not bars with bikinis! Brandy, the way you narrate, is simply poetic and inspiring. Please keep up the good work. I have no doubt others are like me in that we look forward to each and every video you produce.

Thanks so much Mike! It means a lot to hear that, we appreciate your support! 💛
If you can find just 1 crew member for the longer legs it will make a big difference in getting rest and it also breaks things up giving you somebody else to talk to and get different perspectives. I took on 2 crew for my trip back to Texas from Bequia when the virus hit. It was nice to have the extra crew. I could actually be a real captain and give orders instead of having to do it all myself like cleaning the hull before the trip.
This was a fantastic video. It covered the good and the bad, the beautiful and the ugly, the realities of sailing. Thank you very much for a transparent look at the sailing life. Fantastic job.
We’re glad you enjoyed it! It’s good to be honest and show the ups and downs, don’t want to give any false hopes or dreams to this lifestyle!
@@BeauAndBrandy And that is why I found this video so refreshing. I've watched you guys for many years and no the ups and downs. Hey, how is the electric motor doing? I'm a big fan of electric.
Great content and pace. Plus you being real makes you likable.
Back when my mentality for offshore passages was to just make it thru it, I hated the long passages. One time I sailed with a really good captain and realized that I needed to learn to 'live' while at sea.
Part of it was learning (more like pushing myself) to not let things fester until I make it to port. If something breaks I have to fix it. I need to do my captain duties and make sure the boat is working as it should.
Part of it was learning to enjoy sailing. Get on the rail and watch the sea, watch the sails, but also learning to entertain yourself and every now and then, escape. One way I learned to escape is using noise cancelling headphones to watch a movie on the tablet or to just listen to music. You'll be surprised how different it becomes when you cut out all the sounds of the boat and sea for an hour or two. One thing I had found out though is it isn't good to watch something new. You can't focus enough so you will get frustrated trying to follow the story. It's best to watch a movie you like to re-watch often. This is very important for single handlers. The more people you have on board, the less important it is.
I started really enjoying the long passages after learning these things. I hate the 1 to 2 day passages now. A few hours is ok but the 11 day passages are the best. The 30 day passages bit too long, especially as a single handler.
Very well done. Better than some professional documentaries I have seen. Appreciate the work involved.
Thank you
Beautiful😀😀😀
17:50 that moment when the hours of calm almost bordem turn into shear terror, where you swear you could feel the plaque in your veins start flowing again, then returns to calm so fast your body is not exactly sure how to handle the adrenaline dump. God i love sailing!
THIS!!
Another first class video. Love you two!
Great job as always... Beau musta needed a break from all the work y'all been doing 💓💓 SV Lost Cajun

What an excellent description of sailing - loved it - well done - beautiful thoughts - may favourite is a starry night - nice wind - and seas and a track of bio luminescence - how insignificant my trouble seem and its like you are one with the universe - the other is sailing is two emotions- bored shitless or scared shitless..

I have to add that the more you are prepared for things to break, the better off you are and more you will enjoy cruising. If it can break, it will break at some point and almost always when you are at sea, not in port. Backups, backups backups. If it's important, you either have to have a backup, a replacement or a temporary fix available.
As a single handler, and I would also add couples, there isn't much more important than an autopilot, even if you have a windvane. When I first started cruising, I had just installed a new AP so I knew it was good for a while. I didn't have the money for a windvane or anything else so I built a drum for the wheel so I could do sheet to wheel if needed.
When I was in Georgetown Bahamas, I met a couple just finishing up a 23 year around the world cruise and was headed home to call it quits. They had both a vane and AP so I asked them (I was asking everybody I saw with a vane) how much they used it. Like most others I met, they said very little. In fact, the only time they used it while cruising was a trip from Tonga to NZ because the AP's hydraulic hose busted. He said he knew it needed to be replaced but hoped he could make it to NZ.
I took that and came to the conclusion having a second AP spare, the same make and model as the one I just put in was best. If something failed I could heave-to, replace a part in 5 minutes and be on my way again. 40K miles later when I sold the boat in Fiji because I wanted a bigger boat for my new family, I remember going through my spares and seeing that and say 'glad I didn't need it and had it but what a waste' :) It did do something for me. It gave me piece of mind knowing I could fix the AP at sea if needed.
I've seen all kind of videos of cruisers doing a video of something that failed at sea and how they are screwed now. It drives me nuts seeing these people out there without spares. Ex: a cat with a bunch of people on board doing a long trip in the Indian ocean and the water maker that they depended on broke. If you depend on something you gotta have a spare for all parts of the system. Money in the bank doesn't do any good when you are dying of thirst at sea.
Now I know many of these vloggers are hyping up the situation if not outright creating them on purpose for views (money) and I don't blame them but it's like they are going against everything I was taught. Crazy how technology and different income streams have changed the cruising world. It used to be that you had to get us drunk before we aired our dirty laundry.
Yeah, the cruising curve isn't about learning how to sail or learning how to sail offshore, it's all about that other stuff. I had a good mentor and was about as ready as one can be to start cruising after 7 years of getting me and the boat ready, but I still had a few years of learning new stuff.
Even after all these years we STILL learn something new everyday!
Awesome video and some great insight
It's great people go out and try things we only desire and never try thanks,
Hey Bros! Great video, keep up the good work. Watch out for underwater aliens . UWA'S . Be safe. 😁
Loved loved this video ❤️🙌🏼👍🏼
Love the video have to love what you do 😊
Not to mention the misery of that bed matress sandwich be table and couch. How could any magic happen on that? 😂
So true sleep being a not nightmare or a dream as a kid you had. HAHAHA Cannot sleep being thrown about, cannot make coffee ahhh. But those days that are perfect is worth it all. EX merchant seaman plus sailed as a kid.
Good episode. One question. You commented about the exhaustion when needing to hand steer for many hours when the AP breaks. Have you ever hove-to in those times. I use that all the time and for any excuse, we will stop to each lunch rather than trying to juggle plates of food at 20º heel. Most of the time that anybody needs to use the head, we just quickly hove-to, do our business and go back to sailing. It only costs us a few minutes and very little effort. It is a rare day on the water that we do not hove-to at least a few times.
Yes. We’ve use it just like you. Potty breaks, coffee breaks, lunch, we’ve even slept some. It’s definitely a lifesaver.
@@BeauAndBrandy You should do a segment on it because I find so many sailors who have never tried, and it is so easy and can be a game changer in many ways. I am not sure about your experience, but I have found that if I have the correct sails up for the current conditions, that is the perfect configuration for hove-to.
Trim to close hauled, tack and do not touch anything. when the boat slows down, turn the wheel back the other way and lock it. Done. It is the easiest way to recover a drone, bar none.
Well, at least you have a great anchor. To be honest, it's not the best setting anchor, but the second best. The best is a Bulwagga but it's hard to get. I use a Mantus on my current boat as I can't get a Bulwagga big enough. The Mantus does hold better though and that is important when a storm comes in.
I can tell you learned the trick of pulling the boat around into the wrap around swell. The good news is I haven't been in an anchorage with rollers like the Caribbean in other places. Most other places have good anchorages.
Gotta wonder...how many times has Beau sang you the sailing song "Brandy" by looking glass.
A couple 😂
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Hi from George, Janice and Lucy
Hi guys!!
What if you had some kind of cup and string set up? 🤔 with like brass "cups" to speak into and be heard on the line throughout the boat 🤷♀️
❤❤❤
🤙🏻🤙🏻🤙🏻
What countries have you experienced a full inspection and dog sniffers? I've been boarded in Bahamas, Tonga, Panama and Cayman Islands with only Cayman Islands doing a real search with a dog.
South coast of DR. Boca Chica was our only boarding with a dog. Supposedly it was bc we weee heading to Puerto Rico, but who knows. We’ve been boarded in Bahamas, Jamaica, Curacao, couple of others but just can’t think of where they were 🫤
😎😎😎
😀😀😀👍👍👍❤❤❤
If you don't buy a big boat, you better be flexible to fold yourself into tight spaces like an octopus to fix anything the designer stuffed in there. And if you're clumsy, you better be tough.
Hahahaha 🐙🐙
❤👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
👍
😎
Question. What if you don't check out just leave?
You can't know everything in beforehand. If that should be so, it's no life. Words from an old man, me :-)
Ain’t that the truth! I like that saying!!
A los que vivimos en lo que se llama "occidente", navegar de verdad con la mente abierta nos cura de la soberbia, uno de los siete pecados capitales y nos devuelve sabiamente a nuestra verdadera dimensión.
:)
SuperVid.
Tried to watch your video, but it kept getting cut off so I didn’t get to watch it
What do you mean it keeps getting cut off?
