It's not that the athletes getting worse but the judges are getting more reluctant to give a 10 playing it safe, and they're getting "used to" the perfection from these performances. Hence, it's the reason why you rarely see 10's these days on the scoring board, even though these athletes are doing more complicated moves. When you look at it even in the slo-mo replay most of the time they're still perfectly synchronized. I have my utmost respect for synchronized simmers.
