    The editing of the Copeland rehearsal segment is really designed to tear her down and make it seem that she's "giving up". Having her walk off stage while taking off her costume in exhaustion is just so manipulative. Obviously, you don't care much for her dancing which is fair, but why post this?

      @sofia s you sound dumb as hell 😂 do you not realize how many rehearsals, classes, and hours she has put into ballet? she can’t ever go to book signings or galas that are apart of her career and help with promoting her books that give tips to younger and even adult girls on the ballet lifestyle? and how can she draw her own attention to herself? people CHOOSE to pay attention to her because she is likeable and a good ballet dancer. you act as if not one ballerina has never had a bad day or performance. NO ballerina is gonna ever be perfect. idk how you even call her lazy when i know damn well you would not even be able to pull off half of that variation. girl you’re sad that you spend your time hating on a PROFESSIONAL ballet dancer that has more knowledge than you do in the sport. nice try boo.

    • @ag-vq1dc
      @ag-vq1dc 3 года назад +2

      @sofia s you don’t think ballet is a sport? it’s a sport just as much as it is an art form. don’t talk to me about my level of expertise thanks. but now you wanna bring her race into her very much earned success? WHO CARES if that’s what got her recognized? i think it’s crazy that that’s even being brought up on a comment that had absolutely NOTHING to do with her race & was talking about how her dancing was being talked down on. but yes since you wanna go there her being African American very well played apart of her story but again who freaking cares? it’s amazing that there’s a principal dancer that gets to represent her community as it is not as widely represented in ballet. let me add when i look up misty copelands name i see good videos & yeah there are some that show a bit of struggle but guess what? that’s the same for every ballerinas name you look up so what is the issue?

    • @ag-vq1dc
      @ag-vq1dc 3 года назад +1

      @sofia s i just saw another one of your comments where you replied to a person who didn’t mention her race not even once and you used the race card once again. what is it with her race that you have such an issue with? she has technique i am a ballet dancer i can recognize technique. why would a world known professional company let a women in with no potential or skill? you see one or two videos of her falling out of fouettés and run with the idea that she doesn’t have any talent? why? if that’s the case why don’t you keep the same energy with every other ballerina? swan lake is one of the hardest ballets to perform in general. also every ballet dancer specializes in one area more than others. for me i’m better at adagio then turning. some may be better at allegro then adagio. no person is gonna be perfect in all areas. it’s really unfair that you keep using her race as an excuse for her success as that is NOT the only reason she is where she is. stop talking about her race it’s getting old and you’re sounding bothered by it. and ratmanskys choreography compared to others is horrible in my opinion. it would make any dancer look awkward but that’s my opinion.

    • @ag-vq1dc
      @ag-vq1dc 3 года назад +1

      @sofia s first of all i never called you racist but your continuous comments about her race are getting annoying. they are so repetitive. we get it you don’t like the “constant” media surrounding her race blah blah blah but in reality her community appreciates it. just cause you get nothing out of it doesn’t mean no one else doesn’t. African American little girls look up to her so much as well as other ballet dancers apart of that community. yes misty can improve greatly like every single other dancer but that’s ballet. you continue to grow every single day in each class & rehearsal. i just don’t like how misty is getting labeled as a lazy dancer who only gives lazy performances which is far from the truth. this ballet world should be uplifting to dancers not degrading. you can give critiques without being hurtful, bringing race into it, or initiating that she’s undeserving. that’s all i’m saying and i’m tired of arguing with you. we have our own opinions.

    Misty works like a dog, probably to her own detriment. I'm not her biggest fan, but i also know she struggled with an injury and also sought training from that Conrad guy, who actually screwed up her body and placement even more. Gillian turns like a top, she's so stable and trains very seriously. My coach has taught her on several occasions and she said Gillian never changes a combination. She has no ego, very hard worker. She does the work even in smaller simpler combinations. You can't hold a candle to Irina, she has that precision and Russian training. She and Misty aren't even part of the same world.

Misty works hard in every combination, but your mutual connection to Gillian makes you biased. The statement you made is very disrespectful. They are both beautiful ballerina's and principal dancers, so speaking on someone you don't know much about, let alone putting them under someone is is not kind.

But their school system is VERY different, which is why they produce VERY different dancers. Ballet training in the United States is inferior due to limited funding for the arts.

      Laura Streeter Interesting to hear that Copeland’s teacher was known to put students into pointe shoes early. I read that she was on pointe 2 months after starting. Anyway, after a couple of years there was a guardianship tussle between Misty’s mother and teacher which received nationwide publicity. The mother won and scholarship offers poured in since the mother could not afford lessons for Misty. A couple years later she attended ABT’s summer intensive program by invitation and continued into the company. However, her late start and compressed training has IMO caused physical problems for her. After her severe leg injury in 2012 and year off she came back to plunge into many leading roles that other dancers spend years training for. She has been promoted as an icon and those who judge her as a dancer get taken to task. But Mistry herself to my knowledge has never claimed to have overcome rejection and prejudice to get where she is.

She has talked about racism in general but more about body image since I am sure she is well aware that if she was white, she would not be in the company based on short legs in proportion to her torso, no particular technical prowess, average artistic ability. Sure it is all about the publicity but she would be stupid not to take advantage of it. ABT benefits in increased attention and ticket sales so it is taking advantage too. That’s life.

    Kerry, no you don’t understand. ABT and all cultural institutions don’t make money. They just try to keep from going too far into the red. It is a matter of survival. They have to walk a narrow tightrope between the art they cherish and the practical necessity of making money. The Alvin Ailey company has to schedule and promote their “Revelations” at every single performance. Almost every ballet company has to perform “Nutcracker” through the holiday season or they wouldn’t survive. They all have to tailor their offerings to what the public, not aficionados, want to see. If Copeland draws people in and some become learn to appreciate the art, then she has done a service to the company. It is unfair to expect her to somehow make up enormous deficits or else she can’t dance. I suspect that the Met season was cut short because ABT as well as the Met management decided they couldn’t afford it. Only about 40% of their revenue comes from ticket sales. They are a charity. If Copeland’s fame can also help them raise money, then they will use her.

    I gather a lot of people commenting here haven’t seen Misty perform in person. I got to see her Swan Lake with ABT a few years ago and she did all (or close to all, I wasn’t counting - but it wasn’t this abridged choreo) the fouettes. Was she my favorite Odile? Maybe not, but neither is Isabella Boylston and I LOVE her. For Misty’s Swan Lake you could feel the passion of the entire ballet from the “family circle” (nosebleed seats!) and the whole ballet was beautiful as a whole. While I also love to comb RUclips for bootlegs and official videos clips of ballet it’s never quite the same as being there live. Misty was an exquisite dancer. (although this video has made me notice her hands are weird in her turns - you can’t see that from the family circle)

      And for any other armchair experts who might read this in 2020, I’ve also had the privilege to see other ABTers Gillian Murphy, Stella Abrera, Hee Seo, Isabella Boylston, etc etc. and you know what? I sometimes saw them in the roles they’re “known for” and sometimes ones they weren’t. And you can take something beautiful away from each performance.
      Another good thing is that everyone has different tastes - if a dancer isn’t for you, they might be for someone else. I tend to prefer the speed and precision of someone like Maia Makhateli or Daniil Simkin and the extension of Gillian or Isabella. But that also means I’m always excited to see what a live performance can be when a dancer is in their element - watching Misty in Firebird, or Skylar Brandt turn, or Isabella jump, or Gillian do anything.

And I saw Natalia Osipova (with Steven McRae) do Giselle in 2015 where she straight up FELL after landing a jump. Just crashed the floor. You know what? I didn’t immediately think “she’s a shitty dancer” - more like “if it can happen to her it can happen to anyone. Shit happens. Ballet is hard.” And none of us left there thinking she was no longer one of best ballerinas in the world. Judging dancers off of one performance can be tricky. /rant

    I would never denigrate someone's hard work and Misty definitely puts the hours in but there are several other black dancers (and not only) with far superior technique who can actually deliver the choreography as is. On the other hand if this result was delivered by a white dancer she would never have made it to the corps let alone become a principal. She does well in breaking boundaries but as an audience I feel disrespected when a brilliant choreography is simplified because a dancer can't cope.

      It wouldn't be so bad if she had charisma, or artistry, or musicality, or something that compensated for the sloppy and missing turns. Agree that many black dancers have far superior technique, but it is true, perhaps, that most black people in general don't get as many opportunities to dance ballet as certain upper class and wealthy white elites with the right body type. And overall, the group of whites that have the chance to dance ballet is much larger. So, it is perhaps best to let it be. After puzzling over this one for a long time, that is the conclusion I've finally come to. I wish Misty the best and hope she has the sense to stop dancing classical ballet before she gets injured even more than she is already. She will have a media career/presence for the rest of her life, and she has already proved her point -- that money, hype and PR can buy just about anything (except real talent).
      As for the title of this video, no, Misty is definitely not lazy. She is bright, capable, and certainly a better dancer than the average RUclips-binging couch potato. So, it all depends on the basis of comparison. Misty compared to professional ballet dancers? Embarrassing, without proper foundation, training or technique. Compared to me? Fantastic!!!

The truth is Misty has a myriad of technical problems due to the amalgamation of 1) starting ballet later than most of her peers at age 13, 2) getting put en pointe a few months into her training by her teacher which is unsafe and unethical practice, 3) getting injured due to the previous reasons and needing to get injury on her left tibia and to get plates screwed in. She has hyperextended legs but she doesn’t know how to manage them properly - she literally straightens her hyperextended legs and locks her knees during chaines, which is a big no no. • @kaitlynclem5967
    @kaitlynclem5967 4 года назад +83

    Perhaps the Murphy comparison is a bit unfair since any ballerina capable of tacking on double, triple, and even quadruple pirouettes in this sequence is clearly a natural turner, but I think it's clear that Misty's technique was not built to sustain her through carrying entire classical productions. I once read an interview with Irina Dvorovenko where she said that doing 32 fouettes isn't difficult - she's been doing it since she was 12 - the real difficulty is in tempering your emotions so to the audience you don't look exhausted at the end of it. I don't think that it is unreasonable to expect that if a dancer is going to perform this role, they should either be able to execute the technical demands, or be capable of giving a performance so stunning in the rest of the ballet that not completing them doesn't affect the audience's impression of the performance. Not every 32 is going to as electrifying to watch as Murphy's or Dvorovenko's, who I think are the most dynamic out of this grouping, but to be unable to even get through half of them is quite unfortunate to say the least.

      @@Steven-hq4mb I mean that some dancers have a natural aptitude for certain skills that make them exceptional at performing them. Agreed. For instance, at a guest performance of 'Swan Lake' Kathryn Morgan had to shorten her turn sequence when she was sick with her thyroid condition because at that point she simply didn't have a body healthy enough to do it, but she is such a technically beautiful dancer and has such amazing artistry that it's irrelevant. Unfortunately, Misty's technical abilities are mediocre compared to her contemporaries at best, and so she falls short by comparison.

    First of all, why do you think you put rehearsal footage first thing for Misty Copeland and performance footage for all of the other ballerinas? Don't you think that's a little biased? Second of all, you could've just put "Comparison of ABT Ballerinas Black Swan Variation and Coda" as the title instead of pitting Misty Copeland's "lazy" performance against all of the other principals. Let people form their own opinions and don't try to implicitly convince them of yours. I also wonder why you said "vs ABT Ballerinas" instead of "vs other ABT Ballerinas. Are you implying that somehow, she is not an ABT Ballerina herself? She has worked her ass off to get where she is, and endured a lot of racial discrimination and body shame so leave her alone please. And third of all, her fouettes were much more musical and clean than almost all of the other ballerinas in this video, and I enjoyed her performance. I'm not saying she's the best dancer ever, personally I like Isabella Boylston better, but Misty doesn't deserve all this hate. Im sure we all heard about Misty's "fouette fail" but there have certainly been other slip ups in ballet history, and they haven't received nearly as much publicity. So what's the difference? Misty Copeland is black. That's the difference. How about instead of making videos like these, you take a second to confront your inner biases and then do something to help empower black dancers, not tear them down.

    • @kerrytakashi12

      Rehearsal footage is the only footage available or that is allowed to be released by Copeland's own PR team. There were once MORE examples of her dancing during professional ABT performances and they were all taken down.
      To date, the only professional release of her dancing is Romeo & Juliet at La Scala and a few motion picture clips.
      Therefore performance footage can't be cited if it is not released and this is by Copeland's own choice.

Yet no one is highlighting that the plates/rod inserted into her leg were not designed to do what she does. The fact she has been adaptive, resilient and driven to still dance to the calibre that she does in and of itself is more remarkable than any ballet could ever be.

      @Laura Streeter It isnt just bad technique that causes injury. Misty knew she was injured but like many driven athletes, dancers body movement practitioners she pushed her body too far. How do I know technique is not everything...I was a spiriting with amazing form, always ensured I warmed up properly but it didnt stop me from tearing my hamstring in a 100m. Difference is I didnt push myself more than I could so that I would heel. Injuries can be reduced with proper technique in anything physical but genetics plays a role, stress, not resting/listening to body...one does not earn the title of prodigy without its merit. One thing I recall from dancing when I was little was my teachers mentioning the it factor. You might not be the best technical wise, the prettiest, but people cant turn away from you...Misty has the it factor and she is able to convey the stories through dance and ballet so beautifully and the story is just are critical as the execution and sometimes adapting skills helps enhance the ability to convey a story and I dont see folks highlighting that either. The beautiful thing about Misty is she knows this about her abilities and says as much but still has the tenacity and drive to go after something so grueling as dancing lead in Swan Lake and being able to demonstrate her versatility which is stretched beyond measure.

Most kids don’t train THAT seriously, so I think the whole age thing is just part of the culture trying to claim exclusivity for kids of more well off parents. Most female dominated sports are suspiciously “must start early” required (dance, gymnastics, cheerleading), while I’m guessing male dancers often start later and aren’t considered much different because of it. Meanwhile, we’re seeing more and more retirement “exceptions” throughout various male and female sports and performing arts.

In Russian technique, the free leg swings only to the side between each foutte, while in the "western technique you can get extra momentum, and extra rest on the supporting leg, by swinging to the front and round to the side before turning again.

    Ms. Copeland is a lovely dancer. She had to have worked very hard to become even an ABT corps member. She does not seem, however, to have the technique typically required of an ABT principal dancer - especially for lead roles in ballets such as Swan Lake. Perhaps she is better suited to less challenging roles in which she can focus on interpretation rather than being challenged with technique issues. There are many wonderful ballets that don’t require the technique demanded by Swan Lake and other such technically challenging ballets. Principal dancers are expected to have mastered certain basics, such as a sequence of 32 fouettés, well before they become a principal dancer. That is simply a fact. I was a ballet dancer for 20 years and had the honor of the best teachers and being in class with superb dancers. It is a joy and a terribly difficult profession. There are no shortcuts and a dancer’s weaknesses cannot be hidden. I was not principal dancer material and so accepted my limitations and enjoyed and loved every minute of what I could do. It was pure joy to just dance.

    I really like the discussions going on here. I agree that Misty is not lazy, but just not the right caliber of dancer. I think ABT (art generally) is simply echoing the progressive voice/PC movement for representation and inclusivity (not going to comment further on that here). I think Misty is a great example of selling what people want to hear - she was the best source we had at the time of beautiful, likeable, *marketable,* late-starting black ballerina, the perfect publicity storm. I wonder if we could have waited a bit longer for a better one who could do the community more justice, but the timing was certainly right.

    Not every opera singer can sing well in roles that don't suit their voice. I think in Misty's case maybe Swan Lake isn't best suited for her especially regarding the fouettes (unless there are other performances of Swan Lake where she executed all 32 and in a superior way). Also with ballet, especially this ballet, that 32 fouettes variation is the top and most anticipated one, and if a dancer doesn't execute them it's highly frowned upon., and that's how it is in ballet. She might be better suited in other roles that fit her style and skill more closely compared to this ballet, which doesn't take away from her principal dancer ballet skills.

    When comparing a subjective art form like ballet you are certainly entitled to prefer certain dancers over others. But there's is nothing in this video that shows Misty's technique is lazier than the others. Literally nothing. One must assume the uploader is not classically trained to come to such a conclusion. As for her not doing all 32 fouettes in the second version, there could be countless explanations for that: injury, problem with her shoe, off her leg, etc. None of them have to do with being lazy and could happen to any principal at ABT, and I'm sure it was a one off occurrence. I agree, your choice of editing regarding her taking off her tutu is manipulative and vile. You should be ashamed. Now for those commenting that she started later and that affects her technique, actually it doesn't. Yes she started later but to be a principal in ABT you either have the technique or you don't. They don't make exceptions because someone got a late start😂 She started late AND STILL got the technique.

I bet there are is a decent number of black (as well as asian, hispanic, etc.) dancers who COULD execute it properly. (I say a decent number because there's only a handful of all dancers who could, regardless of race) This doesn't empower black dancers; quite the opposite. Why did they have to dumb it down for the first black ABT dancer? Should've picked someone who could. Yes, she's a beautiful dancer. Extremely skilled. But she can't perform the choreography, so she shouldn't have gotten the role. You're all right, lazy is not the right word. Under-qualified is. It’s not actually 32 turns, technically its 32 counts. Misty does 32 counts. Gillian does 64 counts, but not 64 turns. Classically its supposed to be 64, but not all ballerinas do 64. The natural turners usually do, but some do 32. Even some of the greats. But point is that it’s counts, not turns.

    • @clarissaleung4509
      @clarissaleung4509 3 года назад +14

      ... You’re supposed to hit every count with a fouette, hence 32 fouettes. But if you miss some and end up with like maybe 30, no one’s going to rake you over the coals for it. But the prep double at the start of the sequence should get you a headstart, so you only need to get at least 30 in the 32 counts. Gillian only does her fouettes in the 32 counts, not 64. She just does more than one fouette per count on average so she ends up with more than 32 fouettes. No one does fouettes consecutively in 64 counts.
      But the standard is you are expected to fill out the 32 counts with fouettes. Not do maybe 16 fouettes, and then opt out of them and do some piques for the final counts. Of course, if it’s a bad day or you’re injured or sick and you only do it on one occasion, no one’s going to blame you. If you do it continuously and never manage to prove that you are technically capable of doing 32 consecutive, clean fouettes though... That’s a different story.

Obviously if you compare her to any of the great ballerinas of her generation she always comes lacking. I’ve seen many of her videos and interviews and everything is hard for her (fouettes, balloné en pointe etc). As she tweeted once, “She knows her position and what she represents”, she knows why she is there and unfortunately it’s not for being a great ballerian, it’s for the diversity she brings to the table in a time where USA is all about. Besides Gillian Murphy who’s amazing, if you truly love ballet you watch Russian, English, Italian, or French ballet not American ballet. IMHO.

      “It’s just not for everyone”?!? This goes way beyond the bounds of the subjectivity inherent in the performing arts, fgs! Copeland signed on to be some kind of role model or standard bearer for African Americans aspiring to be dancers without having even nearly the technique required for a principal dancer in a world class company….that is a FACT, not a subjective opinion. I agree that “lazy” is totally the wrong word, but it’s obvious that Copeland can’t dance the standards of the ballet repertoire, when there are several, much more technically accomplished AA dancers who could easily blow Copeland off the stage, such as Michaela DePrince, who had a horrific childhood as a war orphan in an African orphanage, and who’s story is far more compelling than Copeland’s, but she gets very little attention despite her elan as a dancer. Somehow Copeland was elevated to a position she’s not able to justify onstage, and we’re somehow supposed to feel sorry for her or we’re racist! What kept the other dancers back is that they couldn’t “scrub the black off,” as was ‘suggested’ to Precious Adams at the Bolshoi Academy as one of the first AA student dancer graduate from the school….it is obvious that skin color had a great deal to do with the ABT’s choice. Anyway, Adams and DePrince are wonderful examples of true ballet dancers, not a token. Adams is now dancing with the English National Ballet and DePrince with the Boston Ballet, after several years in Holland bc she couldn’t land a job at a major American company.

    Responding to TB. Of course, any company wants its Odile to perform the solo well. But every company has to make artistic compromises at times, especially if money is involved. Copeland sells tickets, mostly to people who have little idea of technical standards. In the past, I remember a lot of criticism of a certain ABT dancer who everyone thought was hired and promoted because their parents donated a hunk of money to the company. So true. Her style is different and that’s what makes her art unique as most art is. Instead, it far better to stand back and appreciate that Misty put so much time, effort, blood, sweat, and tears into how she dances - if it isn’t a personal preference of aesthetic for one, it will be for another. Art is subjective after all. I would hardly call a woman with a physique like that who is able to dance on her toes for hours at a time lazy. What I would call unfair cruel criticism of Misty’s dancing is more like petty jealousy.

Every ballerina works their butt off to give the best possible performance. While there is some things Misty could improve upon, that doesn't mean she's a bad dancer nor is she not a hard worker. Every ballerina, even the best of them, have something to improve upon regardless of how long they've been dancing for. The very first performance I ever saw Misty dance in was Romeo and Juliet. Misty did an absolutely amazing job as Juliet in that production! Some of the things she can do are things I can only dream of!

    First off, stop calling her lazy because she isn't. Second this is not about race or anything but Misty is a great dancer overall. This may have not been her best work but calling her lazy and being disrespectful towards her isn't right. Just because you think someone else did better than her doesn't mean you need to belittle Misty or anyone else for that matter. I think she has her great moments and her bad moments like any other person or dancer. I'm part of the dance community and sometimes we make mistakes but that doesn't mean that we're lazy and something's wrong with us, I'm just saying that lazy isn't the right word and they obviously chose her for the role for a reason.

    • @jewelmarkess

      It was not a single mistake, she's never done 32 fouettes on stage. She should not be dancing this role. SkyBlueSkin didn't call her lazy btw, she said the variation was lazy, I grant you it's not the right choice of words. She is trying, she cannot do them. But Misty simply shouldn't do ballets where she cannot do the steps. There are ballets in which she is absolutely great, but there are those where she cannot do the steps, yet she gets more opportunities to do them than other principals in ABT. Google for Misty and fouettes. She's never done 32 fouettes in any ballet. Try to find a single video where she does 32 fouettes. Nothing to do with color, there are many black dancers who do them perfectly, all of them, really except for Misty.

    Misty is a AMAZING DANCER who probably in retrospect should of said “This is great opportunity thank you but i am not strong enough consistently in my turns for this role,” she shouldn’t be called a bad dancer, just a dancer who took a bigger bite than she could chew. A easy mistake we have all made in dance or outside of dance. The BLAME should be on the company for letting her continue, she’s fulfilling a job. They should of removed her from the role and waited till a better suited role came around for her if they really wanted to work with her. She’s amazing at her attitude poses, her leaps and ability to raise her legs with ease are stunning. She’s not a turn person and that’s okay.

    I can’t claim to know anything about ballet and they all looked pretty amazing to me. The one thing that I particularly liked about Misty Copeland’s version over the others was the fluid movement of her raised leg as it wrapped back into the turn - there’s probably a technical term for it! The others all seemed to kick out that leg (one even looked like a parody of the Russian dance kick, it was so pronounced)

    • @enokxyi
      @enokxyi 2 года назад +12

      Misty is doing a very exagerated rond from front to side during her fouttes which is imo is part of the reason why she doesn't have stability in her turns and they look juvenille. Ideally you should hit the position with your gesturing leg out to the side and your standing knee bent very quickly and snap back into the passe position. I know in russian technique at least they try to minimize the time the leg is out to the front.

    • @enokxyi
      @enokxyi 2 года назад +13

      To elaborate, if you play Misty's turns at 0.25 speed, you'll see that she extends her leg down facing the front left corner and spends about 3/4 of her turn winding her leg and only 1/4 in passe position. If you look at Irina's turns for example, you'll see that she extends her leg facing straight forward and it's back in passe position before she turns fully to the right side so she spends 1/4 of the turn with her leg out and 3/4 with her leg in passe position giving her turns a really nice stable snappy quality.
