I do like original Jeff better. He was unnerving whereas new Jeff was dopey. Even still, I did like the episode. The con was pure Slippin' Jimmy and the slippin' Jeff scene had me on edge.
I agree. But to make it feel more smooth (the transition between the 2 actors) I like to think he’s more dopey once he is home with him mom and real nervous especially once he sees Gene there with her. He knows he’s not in control of the situation anymore so he’s less confident. Idk if that was the same thought process of the show runners but I think it’s a good way to help move past the actor change.
I thought the original Jeff had this like spookier vibe too, but props to that other actor for stepping up and filling the role as well as he did. Even though he didn’t have the same kind of chemistry with bob, imo I feel like the dopier version almost fit better into this latest episode than old Jeff would have if that makes sense
New Jeff kinda ruined it. It felt like a season 2 episode where Jimmy did some scheme with some buddies for lulz. It didn't feel like he was in danger of his cover being exposed. Old Jeff was way more intimidating, you could feel Saul was in real danger with him.
The thing with the two Jeff characters. People get too hung up. Pretty simple, a lot of other people have mentioned this too. In the mall, Jeff had Saul surprised and cornered. He’s a real tough guy until he sees Gene in his mother’s kitchen charming her. Now he’s rattled. Big time.
I don’t understand the hate this episode is getting. I thought it was super funny and different. It was unexpected what happened but I thought it fit in with the story perfectly. Did people expect Gene to get a huge machine gun and kill everyone? It was a smart way to get Jeff off of his back. The scheme Gene pulled off was epic and hilarious.
A lot of people expected Walt and Jesse this episode, based on the leaked reporting. I'm so glad that we didn't get it though, as now we are in legitimate suspense as to when they appear. The same people criticizing this episode are the ones who criticized episodes like Sabrosito and Black & Blue the night after they aired. And guess what, those criticisms always come back to haunt them.
I liked it, but I understand why some didn't. With only 4 episodes left in the entire series, it didn't do much to progress the plot. Everything could have been condensed to half an episode or less and still gotten everything across plus advanced the plot. But honestly, the breakneck pace and intensity of the last few episodes was unsustainable. Because if there's no valleys the peaks will seem a lot more dull. We need a lull so the final 2 episodes are comparatively thrilling.
I feel like some people are letting their bb nostalgia affect their experiences with bcs, getting a machine gun and killing everybody was the perfect way for Walter white to end all his problems, but that wouldn't make sense for Jimmy, this episode however, is pure slipping Jimmy action, and goddammit I love it
Surprised you didn’t mention how the “you’re done” scene felt a lot like Walt telling Saul “we’re done when I say we’re done” in breaking bad. Felt like it was a clear callback and a way to illustrate how his time with walt rubbed off on him
I absolutely loved watching this episode, and how we were all fooled with the “ a new player gets in the game” thinking it was going to be the return of Walt and jesse. Season 6 has had no misses so far to me I love it.
The episode was really good, i just wished that the original jeff was there. He was way more intimidating and creepy than the one we got. Dont get me wrong he still did a great performance
I read that if you view it as Saul/Gene’s point of view the change in character kind of makes sense. Gene goes from being intimidated with no upper hand to speak of, to almost making one out of thin air - with nothing but his words and ability to read people. I agree with you though.
Glad you noticed the door not being proped open to make sure he didn’t get locked out. But also, these are double doors and not a single door like the time he gets locked out. We know it’s the same trash area because we see his carving. I’m okay with it I guess because they could have gotten complaints about the door locking and fixed or replaced them or remodeled that area. It’s just weird for a team that pays so much attention to detail. Saul’s fake breakdown reminded me of Walt’s fake breakdown to get Hank to leave the office for a minute so he could plant the bug. There have been several throw away lines this season to misdirect us. Howard and Kim both saying “I’m just getting started” is one
the convo got so awkwardly personal, it does make sense the officer wouldn't want gene to visit again. jimmy had no intention of returning after this anyway. it's just going to look like he's embarrassed to come back.
Also, I think in both cases - Walt AND Saul - they were accessing REAL feelings that they ACTUALLY possessed somewhere in their psyche and using those to “method act” in the moment, which was really cool
I cracked up at the "after all that a happy ending" line. What a troll. We've all been waiting to find out what it meant, as well as what Nippy meant, and it was all just an elaborate fiction, complete with 'a happy ending'. That'll teach us for thinking Kim hired Jeff.
I love just how purposefully misguiding the writers are. We all imagined that line would come back at the end of the series, but it was used to describe Nippy being found! What could the next episodes possibly show us now?
Those teasers have been deliberately designed to mislead and trip us up. The "I'm not your friend" line was in another one and we also just saw it in Jeff's garage, again it felt totally benign and inconsequential. People thought the "Now, what to do with you" line was referring to Howard's body but it was actually referring to Jimmy.
I don't think this story is over yet. You don't bring in Carol freaking Burnett just to play a sweet old lady. They could have got anyone for that. She's onto Saul.
While I understand that some people might be upset about this episode, I think it was not only entertaining to watch, but also logistically necessary, especially as episode 6x10. That's because with it, not only did the sixth season reach the regular length of the other BCS seasons, but it also concluded the main plot points of the show (from the BCS and Gene timelines), in the sense that the show could have ended here storywise with everything crucial having been covered and fully making sense. This will make the next three episodes truly feeling like their own thing in which new territory is being explored. The only significant loose end thus far, at least from what I remember, is the pronoun game played between Francesca and Saul in his office during the Breaking Bad timeline flash forward while they were shredding documents and getting rid of evidence and so on. Who is "they"? Apart from that, and maybe a few other minor things we can deduce ourselves, the main story could, for all intents and purposes, have ended with the events of 6x09 for the BCS timeline and of 6x10 for the Gene timeline. Yeah, 6x10 felt like a standalone experience, in the sense that Gene's dealing with Jeff started and ended with it and also the events in this episode were completely independent of everything else that's happened in S06 thus far. Like you could go from 5x01 straight to 6x10 and still understand everything that happened in this episode. While this is valid criticism, I'm glad Jeff didn't get more attention than was warranted (I could be wrong tho, idk what will happen in the next episodes). He was just a guy messing with Gene and his fragile situation, not nearly as interesting a villain as Gus, Lalo, Eladio, Jack or even Todd. One full episode is IMHO all he needs.
@Wieldy Nutz Given what we know thus far, it could just be the fact that he wanted to get in the game, expecting he'll make more money with time. He was just doing what he was being told by Saul, believing that step by step he would become a successful criminal.
I haven't seen hate for the episode. It was an essential part of the evolution of the story. It frustrates me that non-thinking folk who watch cannot see this. (1) the "Jeff threat" had to be resolved. And with so few episodes left, it had to be "done and one;" (2) The episode shows overtly the "Saul tryin' to get out" concept, where Gene, by necessity, let "Saul fix the thing" so to speak; up to recently, we weren't sure if Saul/SJ was gone forever or not. Now we know for sure that he was just under the surface (hints with the "get a lawyer!" comment, yes. (3) the solution was clever, well written and executed (agree original Jeff better...intimidating, while this one was goofy...this recast choice is the one negative of the episode.); (4) The episode ends with the viewer not sure how this "slippin' Jimmy/Saul resurfacing" will affect Gene's future (Is Gene likely to just go back to being a Cinnabon manager for the rest of his life? Not likely.Or is this "taste" of "the game" too tempting? But how will it play out? We will soon know. And how would Gene's taste of the beloved "Saul" life jibe with any potential long-term Kim reunion? These seem incongruent. These facts lead to tension for the viewer to desire seeing resolution, one way or the other. Perhaps I am being uncharitable for those who did not like the episode. But since BCS is IMO the or one of the best TV shows ever produced, on a myriad of levels, and, by extension, I assume the viewers are sophisticated enough to appreciate all the overt and subtle implications of the episode, I cannot see how S6E10 is not appreciated for the essential episode that it is. Don't worry. We are not done with flashbacks, BCS/BB world, and I am sure, some bit of Kim (love Rhea and the character).
@@WJSuberMD I agree with many of the points you make, but I was still slightly disappointed at the end of the episode for one reason in particular. The plot of the episode was really enjoyable, with Gene using a classic Slippin’ Jimmy type scheme in order to solve his Jeff problem. Additionally, the implication of Gene getting a “taste” of the old life and wanting more of that makes me excited (and scared) to see what kind of trouble he gets into next… I’m really glad to see Gene not simply live the rest of his life in fear/unhappiness. I think all of this is really good for the Gene timeline moving forward (because we have to be getting a bit more finality with Gene than where we left off at the end of Nippy) However, my main issue with the episode is the character of Jeff himself. This is a character we’ve been speculating about for YEARS (since he was introduced in season 4) and not to mention, all of the promotional material has been hinting at Jeff being a serious threat. To have Jeff’s character be as simple as a guy who used to be in Albuquerque and just happened to recognize Saul seemed a little flat to me. With that kind of anticipation, I think Jeff should have been somehow connected to the BCS or BB timelines. I suppose that’s still a remote possibility in some fashion, but I don’t think it’s likely after seeing how Nippy played out. Sure, I’m really glad this episode seems to be the catalyst for Gene to become more like Saul/Jimmy moving forward, but I can’t help but feel Jeff, and by extension, this episode was a relatively easy way to get Saul to resurface from within Gene.
I feel that season 6 is like two mini seasons combined. They even had waiting time for new episodes which kinda proves the point. How I feel is that Lalos death should had ended the first mini season and this episode would be great start after the little wait. But i understand their decisions to release episodes this way and order at this point.
@@jari-petterivirtanen4629 Ending with Lalo’s death would’ve been a good place but they weren’t planning to split it up like they did. That was forced on them because of a 5-week delay after Bob’s heart attack and covid restrictions. Their original plan was just to play them all straight through so it does feel a little weird
Eh...nah. Fact is that the actor change was due to the fact that the first Jeff was contractually obligated to another TV project and could not reprise the role. But IMO the recast choice was poor.
@@WJSuberMD that's what happened in reality, I think it's a good way to interpret why he looks different in universe though. It's what I've been doing.
The track playing during the split screen montage is Lalo Schifrin's 'Jim on the Move' from the Mission Impossible TV series. I believe this means we're seeing Slippin' Jimmy doing the business, not Saul. Edit. This also makes more sense of the shirt he chose at the end. Saul wore plain shirts. Further Edit: I guess this means that at the end we're seeing a Slippin' Jimmy Shirt and a Saul Goodman Tie.
Exactly. People believe that Jimmy was gone and Saul took over. Yeah but Jimmy was in there. Hence all of his Jimmy McGill momentous in his mansion. He is still in there and Saul Goodman is just a face that he made himself wear. Reminds me of what Mike told him and Kim sitting on the bed before they went to the courthouse after Howard and then on top of that, Kim leaving. That’s a straight up self preservation mask.
@@sauerfamily you’re right because when Gene holds up the shirt and tie and sizes himself up in the mirror we’re seeing all three of his personae at once.
I love this entire episode. The anxiety of the plan and risk of getting caught. It was smart and Gene's relationship with Marion was downright heartwarming. This'll be like the Fly episode as in time people will realize how good it was.
Except fly is a average episode, and this was fun to watch. Only problem is that it’s a waste to do it this late into the series, unless this bites Saul in the ass and is what gets him caught
I liked the small detail where the cleaner, that Gene always nods to in the montage sequence on his way to the garbage bin, was absent on his way to the garbage bin on the day of the Scam as he was busy cleaning the spot Jeff slips on.
I liked the episode, not as good as some of the others in the show though tbh. I didn't like the new Jeff either but there's not a lot that could've been done about that. Interested to see how they finish this, I'm sure the ending will be epic though
What could have been done is more careful producters and more careful Harvey when he signed his contract with the new TV show. Given he got his other roles thanks to his performance in BCS I think that it's a shame that he signed a contract where he cannot return I'm BCS. Everybody knew that Jeff was to be in season 6. Everybody knew he is an important character that Everybody was looking for. The blame is big
its kind of strange that with all the time they had to film, they didnt have a single time to get that actor in. i get that each episode films over the course of a month or so, so they only have that window, but i feel like the jeff character is important enough to the story to move things around.
@@taopaille-paille4992 I believe Bob Odenkirk’s heart attack pushed back the filming and it interfered with a contract signed by the original actor who played Jeff- so it wasn’t done on purpose, BUT contracts must be honored
biggest thing i took away from this episode was when jeff was walking out of the store clearly super nervous, the delivery guy comes up to the manager saying they brought flowers with the pick up. Then jeff realizes he is in the hands of a true professional. The saul/jimmy we all know is still alive and on his game.
Also, the football stuff that Gene discussed with the older security guard reveals that the Gene timeline takes place at the end of 2010. If you'd like to look into it more, look into Taylor Martinez and his freshman year.
loved the Dirty Dozen homage with Gene making rhymes for each part of Jeff’s “mission”. The tracking number of the “sprayer” crate is 1968-AE35, which is a fun “2001" in-jokey reference.
I think the gesture of leaving the shirt and tie hanging on the store was a reference to when Gene writes "SG was here" in the dumpster room. Amazing video Kiwi!!
The invoice number of the packing crate is 1968AE35. The film 2001: A Space Odyssey is the reference here. released in 1968, the antennae unit that was purposely failed by HAL was the AE35. Bryan Cranston also played HAL in Malcolm (thanks Joe Voloo).
You missed the significance of Carols character picking the can of Carnation milk in the grocery store. Vickie Lawrence, who was a big part of her show did Carnation commercials in the 70s.
I think ppl that find this episode more humdrum because it is set in the humdrum world of « normal « middle America. Not the punch and glam of the drug cartel. It is a more recognizable world, less exotic. Just a thought.
The only thing I was thinking was why Jeff didn't turn in Saul for the money. There is a $5 million reward for information that would lead to his arrest. My only guess is that maybe Jeff is wanted for some crime in Albuquerque and that's why he fled to Omaha to live with his Mom.
@@MetalCharlo I think a cool $5MM would've slaked that thirst. Given Marion's comments, I would agree that there is probably something not good awaiting him in Albuquerque.
The reason "Gene" was hanging out with Jeff's mom was to send a vague threat to Jeff that his mom was in the company of a dangerous criminal. Then Gene enticed Jeff, a bored and not wealthy taxi driver living with his mother, with the promise of getting him into "the game." But the whole plan was in fact just to entrap Jeff so that if he tried to rat Saul out he would go down too. That was the whole point of the episode.
@@Snottle1 The question arises from before that. Why didn't Jeff immediately inform the authorities? I don't really see Jeff as a criminal, he had to be coerced and practically forced into it. The conversation about "The Game" wasn't Gene seeing that Jeff wanted it, it was Gene convicing Jeff that he wanted it.
One other thing: Jimmy making him say we're done is him asserting he's the one in control. Remember the last thing Walter said to Jimmy was "Were done when I say we're done" before doubling over coughing.
Yes!!! I noticed this too and it was honestly a bit menacing to see Saul pick up that from Walt. It’s most likely a reference to Jeff but the parallel is really cool
That's what I was thinking when I first saw that! I see it as Gene learning from his mistake as Saul, of letting Walt go too far with control, and he's not letting anyone go that far again. When he wants to be done, he's gonna make damn sure that he's done.
Did anyone else notice that the lunchbox Gene was carrying had a Kansas City Royals logo, Kim’s favorite team? I think that’s a hint that it may not be over for Kim.
Very true that was my first thought, but KC's AAA team is in omaha, and Nebraska tends to root for KC teams. So it could also be camo as well as a nod to kim.
Great Gene episode! Loved Carol Burnett's Marion and that she calls her son Jeffie 😂 and he became Slippin' Jeffie during the heist! I noticed another Gene Easter egg - when he puts the loud shirt and tie on the rack, it's his way of saying "SG was here" like he wrote on the wall when locked out of the mall. And he places the clothes at the end of the rack where they're sure to be noticed.
does anyone else get the feeling that the writers re-wrote Jeff's character to work better with the actor change? Original Jeff seemed a lot more antagonistic and creepy,. Where as the 'new' Jeff is just kind of portrayed as an idiot.
I find it as this: Jeff was going to be made as a fool regardless. I think jeff thought he could trick and scare Saul, but Gene realized during his phone call with Ed that he has all the control in the situation
I and a few others have believed that this is because Jeff had leverage when confronting Gene in public but he’s a lot more timid now that Gene is with his mom though how Gene came into contact with her remains to be seen.
Probably true. But I also suspect that the writers took the opportunity to use the recasting as a means to show Jeff as he actually was meant to be in the eyes of the audience and not as he appeared from Genes point of view when he was confronted by Jeff and was freaking out inside
@@TheLAGopher the writers said they didnt change it for the new actor - they had written it way before the old jeff couldnt commit to the show. which is strange because I agree with you....
For a second, I thought Saul was trying to give the security guard an intentional heart attack!! Especially, when he mentioned to not tell his wife about him eating so much sugar. I’m glad I was wrong.
If there's anything this episode has taught me, it's that any prediction I make for the last three episodes will be totally wrong. Throughout the entire episode after every "teaser" reveal, I kept thinking "well done Gilligan and Gould, well done." I will be sad when this series concludes, but also thankful for the entire ride.
One thing that I’ve noticed in people reviewing the episode is that people seem to think that Jeff knew about the reward money. I think Gene was phishing for info to see if he knew about Walt. He didn’t. So, he wouldn’t have known the reward money.
Ugh...you keep saying "Mary-ON" - it's driving me nuts. I know it's not a common name nowadays but it's pronounced "MARRY-in". Ever see Raiders of the Lost Ark? "Don't look Marion, keep your eyes SHUT!"...
Same here. This new one felt weak from the start. The other one you fully believed would try to blackmail, double cross or flat sellout Gene to the police. Would of made his say it speech to Jeff mean a lot more if it was the other actor.
Another reference I immediately thought of when I saw the “Say it” scene is that really tense scene between Walter & Saul. When Saul wanted out, Walter told him, “We’re done when I say we’re done.” In the Gene & Jeff scene this episode, Gene needed to make sure they were done, telling Jeff to “say it”. Gene most likely has trauma from Walter and is subconsciously still scared of him. He needed reassurance that his scheme with Jeff was a one time thing, and not another Heisenberg situation.
My head cannon for the Jeff recast is that after deciding to take control of the situation, Gene sees Jeff as much less intimidating, hence why he doesn't seem as creepy or unnerving once he has control of the situation by low-key threatening his mom.
@@seannymommy I understand why he wasn't there, and I blame the original actor for not having the sense to prioritize Saul, but I don't know if that's really an ironclad excuse. It reeks of that time Vince McMahon tried to sell the public on Fake Diesel and Fake Razor Ramon... I still enjoyed the episode, but that took something out of it for me. The whole series gets a 9/10 instead of a 10/10.
@@seannymommy That said, I can understand why Don Harvey wouldn't pass up the chance to work with David Simon. The Wire is the 2nd or 3rd best show to hit the airwaves after all. Nonetheless, I feel robbed of his services.
this episode did a great job portraying the Jeff character, he looked intimidating when first introduced but this ep shows he is actually kinda innocent and a knuckhead. I actually began to like him and feel for him.
18:19 Saul realized learning curve with elders. He knows how to communicate with old people, henc Jeff's mom. Plenty of experience handling clients of Sandpiper.
I don't know if this was a misdirection or not, but when the store manager requested the floor be polished, I fully expected Jeff to run into the janitor on his way to the box. The night of the heist was the only time we didn't see Gene wave at the janitor after all. So in the end, the slip and fall ended up taking me off guard.
That line paid off though as Jeff slipped on the part of the floor that was just polished. I thought that was more clever than running into the janitor, because I assume that's what a lot of people thought would happen.
I really like this episode, I think the people criticizing the episode are valid because there was a few points the story dragged, and for some reason I was only expecting half of the episode to be a Gene episode. I found this episode surprisingly funny! I really like the way he scammed Jeff and the others into taking the fall if Jeff told the police about Gene. I can understand people not liking new Jeff but he did do better than I personally expected. It’s really nice to see the shades of Jimmy/Saul in Gene and Gene actually felt like a more alive character in this episode. This episode gave me vibes of the first 2-3 seasons, where Jimmy was planning all those elaborate schemes. My personal favorite scenes are Jeff falling and Jimmy trying to stall the security guy, Gene grabbing the ring, and the last scene where he teased the return to Saul. At first I was a bit lost at the episode but overall I think if the people who didn’t like it should watch it again! It’s a decent episode
I was honestly surprised at how much Gene told the security guard! But hey, the best lie is close to the truth. I have to wonder if that’ll but him in the ass later
Although i liked the episode i think the scheme itself is very flawed. In the show they mentioned that the "reward" is about 5000 dollars (minus the cost of the van). I think it is a bit too less money when the risk is so high. I mean the whole plan collapses if the security guard takes one look over his shoulder. It is also very questionable in the first places why he doesn't sit at genes site of the table. He can watch the screens and eat his cinnabon at the same time.
He did not state that the theft items were worth "about 5,000 dollars. He stated that theft IN EXCESS of 5,000 increases jail time. The amount (while not crazy high), is not limited to that amount. Also, Gene timed the eating and observed where mall cop sat. Had he not sat that way, Gene would have amended the plan.
Yea, but people act like this show never has scenes that are contrived, remember how Walt took down Gus in breaking bad? I agree though that is a pet peeve of mine when they do that but it's still entertaining and doesn't ruin the immersion for me or anything
@@joeyhardin5903 not just the scene necessarily. It was the whole process of Walt poisoning brock to get Jesse to think it was gus, and then trying to car bomb him, and then the thing with Hector, it's all just so overly complicated and really out there, I do love Gus's death scene though but I just brought that up because it's definitely one of the most contrived moments of the show
I feel like a lot of people fell off watching the show. 2 year hiatus probably had a lot to do with that. That being said, I even find myself forgetting things that happened and I think a lot of people can’t remember either. Making the show less enjoyable. That being said, I always watch your videos after each episode. They are fantastic. I also share them with other people still watching the show. Those people, lately, have been coming away with reactions to each episode in a poor manner. And I think a lot of that has to do with what I previously said. It’s tying a lot of things together from season to season. Things that a lot of people can’t remember at this point. However, once they see your videos it all comes back and they tell me how much they love the show. Bravo to you and your videos. 💯
I am left to wonder if this storyline was a result of Bob's heart attack to not put any intense scenes or strain on him after returning to the show or if it was because of Jeff's recasting. Maybe a little of both - I wonder if the writers will tell us once the show concludes just how much these circumstantial wrenches in production effected the original plan
On the BCS podcast, peter gould mentioned that they wrote the entire season before they started filming, so I'm not sure if they would have changed anything mid way through the season
i missed the warning and was unaware who the new actor was. the episode was full of suspense and mixed emotions because again jimmy manipulated not just jeff but those two officers. kim is nowhere around, but jimmy is still abusing people's trust. while that officer was eating the cinnabon i did not want him to turn around. it was not because i was on the thieves' sides. the officer was enjoying that pastry so much. if he was aware of the betrayal, it'd break my heart.
I’m pretty torn. I loved the ep as I watched it, but the end result with Jeff was a colossal disappointment. Going from that menacing greaseball, to Pat Healy’a momma’s boy pussy was pretty jarring. I’m gonna chalk this story up as a misstep, unless they rectify it somehow moving forward. I wonder if Gene will slowly start doing more Slipping/Saul shit, now that he’s gotten a taste? Thus leading to his capture, or eventual final escape?
The original Jeff looked more intimidating because of the cab scene. If you rewatch the scene when he speaks to Gene in the mall you can tell he’s pretty goofy. I don’t think this will be the last we see of Jeff but I though it made sense.
@@Brandon_QFG No way. The “say it” increasingly more demanding sounding was super sinister and intimidating in S5!! No argument whatsoever!! This recast was a huge misstep; they should’ve called an audible when the actor couldn’t do it. I mean fuck, guys.
i hear that but i kind of look at it as a plus. playing on the 'nobody' thread running through lalo and saul and then in genes character and lifestyle. almost like part if the paranoia is suspicious of many peopl who could be jeff. like the character of nobody is shifty in black and white and grayscale. like abstract storytelling
Here's an Easter egg for those of you, outside of the ABQ area. There is a real Cottonwood Mall here in Albuquerque. I'm sure that this is no accident. Nice Easter Egg for us locals.
The part that hit me the most was when Marion told Gene that he’s a “good influence” on Jeff, right after Gene just blackmailed Jeff. This is the first time ever in his life that someone praised him for doing something good (albeit not true). What he got before that were insults from Chuck and the society or reward from Kim and Walter whenever he did bad things. This line is like a wake up call for Gene and made him responded with the story about how Nippy live happily ever after to make Marion at peace. The word from Marion really struck deep into his heart that Gene started re-evaluating himself about what he really want. The shot of him trying his Saul Goodman style shirt and then denied it and left it hanging seems like he realized that scam is unsustainable for him to achieve happiness and the real thing that he actually want his entire life is peace.
Yeah, the fact that he was also caught up so much with his work passionately, shows that something in changed his mindest. We saw him constantly distracted from work, for reasons like paranoia but this time he even forgot that he had a break, he even had a genuine smile, which we never saw with Gene.

As a punishment, she might now have a low paying job where she works at a market that she mentioned to Rich and maybe she might even be married and has kids, thus making her uncapable to be with Jimmy again. Him getting away with it, albeit living a mundane life, doesn’t seem like justice because so many people died and suffered thanks to his endeavour and if he never got in jail, it means that Hank spent the entire course of show investigating Heisenberg and died for nothing because there is a totality of ZERO person in Heisenberg operation who got in jail. About Kim, I think Cliff and Cheryl deserve to know the truth what she did to Howard (actually both Jimmy and Kim but mostly Kim) and she needs to get punished in some form…legally. I know its not popular but I dont blame Howards death on Jimmy (or Kim) although it was Kim who certainly pushed for this but in the end it was happenstance. They were indirectly responsible but they didnt plot to kill him... We "could" say that if Howard doesnt send Kim down to filing and condescendingly attack her for her choice of being with Jimmy than Kim wouldnt have acted with such ferocity in her attempt to ruin him. So Howard too created his own fate... We all do. Its Action/Reaction. And in the end we all end up based on the choices we make. It may be sad or tragic but it is life... Just my 2 cents. What a wonderful show though no matter how it turns out.
Did anyone notice Gene's Kansas City Royals lunch box when he was counting out steps in the department store? Kim was a known fan of the Royals, having been seen in a KC Royals shirt a few times, and Gene possibly has the lunch box as a memory of Kim. Or at the very least, it's a callback perhaps
great episode! The only “complaint” I have is that Old Jeff had this intimidating quality that New Jeff doesn’t have at all and instead is replaced by a sort of patheticness, for lack of a better term. I like Kiwi’s theory that the reason Old Jeff was scary is because of Gene’s paranoia but when he let’s Slippin Jimmy come out to play we then see Jeff for who he truly is, im gonna make that my headcanon lol edit: this theory makes even more sense when you consider that it was Gene who had the pathetic quality when Jeff confronted him at the mall, but when Gene con’s his way into Jeff’s house via his mom, there’s a complete role reversal
Eh...nah. Fact is that the actor change was due to the fact that the first Jeff was contractually obligated to another TV project and could not reprise the role.
@@WJSuberMD ya I knew that, that’s why I said headcanon. My comment is not about the actors so much as it is the way the character is portrayed. They could have had the new actor play the character closer to how the old actor did, or hire a different actor that could, but they didn’t
The problem BCS has is that it is measured against itself (see last 3 episodes) and arguably the greatest show of all time Breaking Bad. I get it if you didn't like this episode as much as the others, but to say it was bad is asinine to me. Would you rather watch a formulaic, repetitive, cheap network drama on NBC, CBS, etc? I can't even watch those type shows now because the quality doesn't even come close to measuring up against what Vince Gilligan's group comes up with week to week. Cinematography, acting, story are all as good as you'll find. Better enjoy it while it's here because there's nothing else like it on TV IMO.
Don't know if it was mentioned but the date of the heist would be a day or so after 23OCT 2010. When Gene was talking to and distracting the security guard he was talking about the Nebraska Cornhuskers game. He mentioned QB Martinez who had a freshman record of 435 passing yards. That occurred on 23OCT 2010...
The music that played was named “Jim on the move” by LALO Schifrin and was used in the old TV show Mission: Impossible….. The book Gene was reading at lunch was titled “The moon is a Balloon” by David Niven about his life in Hollywood. Bob O. Recently released his book about his life. 😃
Maybe Saul getting trapped in the garbage room was showing him what prison would be like if caught. And he's now making up what to do. We even see him turn off the police scanner that we probably listened to all the time just in case. I mean I would.
"After all that, a happy ending." Maybe Gene is wistful for Kim when he says this? Like Nippy, Kim disappeared even though he tried his best to prevent it. But since Nippy isn't real, Gene can at least craft a happy ending for him. There's also the "nip it in the bud" connection, although admittedly Gene doesn't know about that.
I saw his revisiting the scene of the crime as leaving a calling card, a flashy shirt and tie a hallmark of a Saul goodman con. Perhaps a sign that Saul goodman will make a reappearance?
One of the great features of this episode--an ingredient of all good "long con" stories--is that the audience isn't given all the information about the plan. I wasn't sure if the scuff on the department store floor was deliberately put there by Gene/Saul/Jimmy as part of his scheme--we find out it was not, which launches a whole new layer of suspense and one of Odenkirk's best moments in the series. Also, the rhyming series ("One, Armani suits and run. Two, Nike shoes for you...") was a nod to The Dirty Dozen.
Gene having a fake mental breakdown to the security guard was similar to Walt when he was talking to Hank and planting a bug in his office. Using the truth to get out of a lie.
What do you mean “who the heck eats a Cinnabon with a knife and fork”??? Eating a Cinnabon with with your bare hands is unhinged lol I’m kind of surprised to see all the hate for this episode. after ~8 years from first seeing depressed future gene it’s so nice to finally see him back in control. Also think the hate for new jeff is a bit overblown I think he was fine. Definitely liked original actor more but the power dynamics shifted so much after he befriended the mom it’s hard to properly compare the 2 performances
The box delivered was invoice 1968AE35. A 2001 reference. Released in 1968 and HAL told the crew the AE-35 unit was going to fail and they needed to fix it.
I don't know if my single comment on your previous video was what made you drop the flute sound, but it certainly makes for a much more enjoyable experience. I didn't want the comment to come off as rude, I didn't mean the sound was bad in itself (I haven't played Zelda btw), it just feels like it breaks the pace of the videos. Anyway, thank you, you've earned a new subscriber. About the "say it" line, I think it's just a common way of making sure someone internalizes a concept or an idea, similar to "repeat after me". It works in the same way as reading aloud, or writing down something important in paper, it makes it easier to memorize.
I like it simply because it’s legit post Breaking Bad still don’t know if he’ll live or die or prison or not just wished this episode was earlier in season. Really interested what they do rest of past sequence:0
I don’t feel that there’s any ‘blackmail’/extortion going on on Gene’s part at all. Gene is simply telling them that if they try to extort him, it won’t work, and why. Overall, they got off with a pretty (goofy) department store hall-and hopefully, they aren’t up to any criminal enterprises on their own.
This was a fantastic episode. I was really wondering where he was going with this plan to remove the threat and starred ti fear he was getting himself wrapped back up in the game, but it was geniusly executed in classic slipping Jimmy fashion. I thought this episode was particularly good for drawing the distinction of his Gene personality from his Jimmy and Saul personalities. Jimmy did scams mostly for the thrill of it and never thought too seriously of things, Saul leaned full scammer and dedicated himself to those ends, and finally Gene seems like he had evolved, executing a sleek scam in order to regain control of his life and save himself. I'm very eager to see where the rest of the season takes us, as this kinda wrapped up his last remaining storyline barring the mysterious payphone call he mentioned to Francesca before fleeing.
What the heck did i just saw?!?! What a Brilliant episode 10/10 omfg. With the laughs and the tension with the con and then that speech on Chuck and Kim showing some of Jimmy and then that last scene showing Saul in the eyes of Gene... These writers are the best! Pure genius!!!
Hear me out everyone assumes walt died around his birthday but what if its mr Lambert's birthday on the fake id he shows the denny's girl. Other points include it doesnt snow like that in new hampshire in early september and also when walt is in the bar in new hampshire there is hockey on the tv which doesnt start until october. I'm not ruling out walt kills saul how amazing would that be for the story
It might be very obvious and not such a big detail, but the egg timer makes the same "ding" like Hectors bell did. Gave me more panic than Gene ^^ actually im thinking about, did they ever met? Im not sure at all... For me, Im fine with this episode. Its a part of telling the whole thing, like lower paced episods did earlier.
What I think people don’t get is…this episode actually does have a purpose. Do you really think that is it for Carol Burnett? She could absolutely know who Gene really is. I think there is a big connection coming up. This just shows that because Jimmy/Saul just can’t help himself with “Slippin’ Jimmy”, he’s destined to screw it up for himself. My opinion is that he should have just relocated. I really do think people will be surprised to find out where this goes!
Elite trolling by whoever leaked the Walt and Jesse appearance in 610. I was lowkey pissed that their appearance in 610 was leaked back in June, but low and behold, they are still keeping us in suspense. Overall, I loved the full Gene episode, but it felt sort of odd that it was in episode 10 when episode 11 won't be in Nebraska. However, I know for sure that we will get a good reason why this is episode was placed out of order.
It was nice to see Gene get a real storyline with some dialogue (as well as being able to pull off what he did with Jeff), as opposed to the sad sack he has been portrayed so far. Any idea how he figured out Marion was Jeff's mother and where to find her? Or did I miss something?
Jeff told him previously to call the cab company and mention him. So he probably just did some investigating to find a last name then figured the rest out..
For real tho deadass, I thought Jimmy's plan somehow included putting the cinnabon mall cop in a diabetic coma so Jeff could do the heist. Also, I didnt need the lip smacking ASMR repeat thank you. Complaining about it would have been quite sufficient. Ugh that grossed me out. Great vid as always tho!

Slippin jeffy
I thought the other Jeff was better. More intimidating.
True but I can't imagine the original actor falling like that
I don’t know how people are saying this episode was bad I was on the edge of my seat for most of the episode
right?!
The loneliness underneath it felt perfectly timed.
Big time.
@@jpmnky yeah he’s all bark no bite I don’t know how people don’t pick up on that
I don’t understand the hate this episode is getting. I thought it was super funny and different. It was unexpected what happened but I thought it fit in with the story perfectly. Did people expect Gene to get a huge machine gun and kill everyone? It was a smart way to get Jeff off of his back. The scheme Gene pulled off was epic and hilarious.
I liked it, more so for them having the balls to do it so late in the show. It was a good change of pace.
It’s exactly what Jimmy would have done. He isn’t Walter and the writers were going to have him handle it just as Jimmy would. It was awesome.
Felt like it was a clear callback and a way to illustrate how his time with walt rubbed off on him
No. It was all about making Jeff say, what he made Saul say.
Also when Mike started yelling YOU ARE DONE to his innocent granddaughter 😂
I think it's reminiscent of Mike making people repeat something in order to make them remember it for good.
@@daves9355 both is good

And I completely agree with the both of yous!
I thought for sure Kim and Jeff were connected. What a misdirect of that line! Good on whoever puts the teasers together!
I laughed like hell the first time I read that Kim and Jeff were somehow hooked up. So silly.
And with so few episodes left, it had to be "done and one;"
(2) The episode shows overtly the "Saul tryin' to get out" concept, where Gene, by necessity, let "Saul fix the thing" so to speak; up to recently, we weren't sure if Saul/SJ was gone forever or not. Now we know for sure that he was just under the surface (hints with the "get a lawyer!" comment, yes.
(3) the solution was clever, well written and executed (agree original Jeff better...intimidating, while this one was goofy...this recast choice is the one negative of the episode.);
(4) The episode ends with the viewer not sure how this "slippin' Jimmy/Saul resurfacing" will affect Gene's future (Is Gene likely to just go back to being a Cinnabon manager for the rest of his life?
I think all of this is really good for the Gene timeline moving forward (because we have to be getting a bit more finality with Gene than where we left off at the end of Nippy)
However, my main issue with the episode is the character of Jeff himself.
It’s not a throwaway line, remember Mike said in the first season 6 trailer “what happens next it’s not gonna go down the way you think “
People seem to easily forget this lol.
It never does in this show lol
“after all that a happy ending” turns out to be a useless nothing line

Kind of worded it poorly, sorry. Just woke up and felt like the world could hear my opinion. Lol per usual

The show is full victory lap mode. And you know what they deserve it, and this episode was a really fun and relatively relaxing time.
I love this entire episode. The anxiety of the plan and risk of getting caught. It was smart and Gene's relationship with Marion was downright heartwarming. This'll be like the Fly episode as in time people will realize how good it was.
It was not good. Barely worth watching. Just more slippin Jimmy.
Damn Killer Karrit is here. I used to watch you play Der Riese with MrDalekJD.
I agree 100%- the old Jeff had a much more menacing look than new Slipping Jeffy
biggest thing i took away from this episode was when jeff was walking out of the store clearly super nervous, the delivery guy comes up to the manager saying they brought flowers with the pick up.

Gene said that Jeff wanted in in the game. Jeff wants to be a gangster like Saul.
@@Snottle1 don’t forget when Saul called the vacuum guy and he said he’d take care of it. That’s how he ended up taking care of it.
One other thing:
Jimmy making him say we're done is him asserting he's the one in control.
It might be over for Kim story-wise but Gene is never over her.
He had that lunchbox in earlier Gene flash forwards as well.
I noticed it.
I don't think we've seen the last of Kim
Very true that was my first thought, but KC's AAA team is in omaha, and Nebraska tends to root for KC teams. So it could also be camo as well as a nod to kim.
Of course it's not the end of Kim. You did see the previews for next week right?
Great Gene episode! Loved Carol Burnett's Marion and that she calls her son Jeffie 😂 and he became Slippin' Jeffie during the heist! I noticed another Gene Easter egg - when he puts the loud shirt and tie on the rack, it's his way of saying "SG was here" like he wrote on the wall when locked out of the mall. And he places the clothes at the end of the rack where they're sure to be noticed.
Lol I literally said that to myself when he left it on the rack. Very nice touch
does anyone else get the feeling that the writers re-wrote Jeff's character to work better with the actor change? Original Jeff seemed a lot more antagonistic and creepy,. Where as the 'new' Jeff is just kind of portrayed as an idiot.
Yep I feel like this is exactly what happened. I’ll always wonder how things would’ve transpired with the more menacing version of Jeff.
But I also suspect that the writers took the opportunity to use the recasting as a means to show Jeff as he actually was meant to be in the
eyes of the audience and not as he appeared from Genes point of view when he was confronted by Jeff and was freaking out inside
This episode was a nice break from all the horrors we've experienced over this season
honestly I think the episode was very good but the new Jeff is much less intimidating than the original actor lol
Same here. This new one felt weak from the start. The other one you fully believed would try to blackmail, double cross or flat sellout Gene to the police. Would of made his say it speech to Jeff mean a lot more if it was the other actor.
I think we only see him that way because he was caught off guard by Gene encountering him with his mom. Gene became the intimidating one
Exactly my thoughts. When Kiwi said that it might be reference to "say my name", i laughed out loud :v
My head cannon for the Jeff recast is that after deciding to take control of the situation, Gene sees Jeff as much less intimidating, hence why he doesn't seem as creepy or unnerving once he has control of the situation by low-key threatening his mom.
I like this theory
No bullshit, I thought the same thing - and frankly, I couldn't have enjoyed the episode as much otherwise.
No, they had to recast Jeff because the original actor was busy shooting "We Own This City" for HBO.
I thought that too! There was so much suspense!
That line paid off though as Jeff slipped on the part of the floor that was just polished. I thought that was more clever than running into the janitor, because I assume that's what a lot of people thought would happen.
Slippin' Jeffie ;)
Marion is a good reminder about how Jimmy/Saul/Gene is incredibly charismatic, with elderly people especially
Your BCS vids and breakdowns are my favorite due to ur extensive knowledge and references of this show and BrBa. Keep up the great work!
Definitely not as good as the last 3 episodes but it’s a solid B for me
I was honestly surprised at how much Gene told the security guard! But hey, the best lie is close to the truth. I have to wonder if that’ll but him in the ass later
It played like a sitcom, almost like an episode of Malcom in the Middle, but it works for where they are in the series and in Gene's life.
Malcolm in the Middle also starred Bryan Cranston. Just a coincidence and I highly doubt that's what they had in mind.
@@isaiahromero9861 What's wrong with that scene?
I think most of us binge watched the first 5 seasons before season 6 started.
@@lapacesiaconvoi yea the way i looked at it if Jeff got caught then Gene was done for because he was going to sing like a canary
I thought this episode was brilliant and loved it but hey that’s me….and that “fall” in the mall was EPIC!
That advertisement was really convincing ngl
The calling out the rhyming steps to the plan was a Dirty Dozen reference.
And I thought I was the only one who recognized this!
3 meanings of Nippy: puppy type bitey dog; quickly off the mark; cold and snowy. Brilliant title.
i loved when Gene couldn't think of anything clever to distract and just said "look at me, look at me!"
I was cracking up as he is running through the mall stealing -singing the song
Of what to take!
It seems unrealistic for Jeff to do multiple runs back and forth within ~3minutes (assuming it all went to plan)
Jeff totally went off plan! Instead of stopping he went greedy and almost effed it all up!
I love how Saul flips Walts “We are done when I say we’re done” on Jeff.
The recast of Jeff has been the most painful experience of mine since I started watching Breaking bad and Better Call Saul
Agree
I view it as Todd’s weight shift in el camino
i hear that but i kind of look at it as a plus. playing on the 'nobody' thread running through lalo and saul and then in genes character and lifestyle.
almost like part if the paranoia is suspicious of many peopl who could be jeff. like the character of nobody is shifty in black and white and grayscale. like abstract storytelling
Agreed
Yep. And so many blew it off saying it would be nothing.
@@jackanapezz He finally made peace with himself and deal with the cards he was given
A perfect setup for something to disrupt his mundane life permanently because this universe just won’t let anyone walk away unpunished (plus Howard deserves justice). A calm before the storm and I guess that storm could be a person named KW.
@@nont18411 Agreed. I think his punishment might be the fact that he can't return to his old life, more specifically he can't be back with Kim. I think we will see a reunion with Jimmy and Kim. However Kim has a new life now and can't go back. As a punishment, she might now have a low paying job where she works at a market that she mentioned to Rich and maybe she might even be married and has kids, thus making her uncapable to be with Jimmy again. It's probably going to be more justifying but just a thought.
@@jackanapezz For me, I think some of them deserves jail time, mostly Jimmy.
Because he committed so much sins and had been evading the law for a long time.
Contrary to popular belief, I don’t think Kim deserves to live happily ever after with her new husband and kids.
@@nont18411 We can also look at it as, Jimmy has always hated himself because his brother never loved and respected him thus Jimmy is a character born out of Greek tragedy where he will constantly try to destroy anything good he tries to do in a recurring Sisyphusian nightmare because he is under the thumb of what Chuck thinks of him. I think this is why Jimmy has all these persona's because he cant be "himself". Perhaps that is punishment enough and perhaps Jimmy accepting himself in the end could be his road to redemption.
I know its not popular but I dont blame Howards death on Jimmy (or Kim) although it was Kim who certainly pushed for this but in the end it was happenstance. When Jeff slipped and fell, I nearly passed out laughing.
Slippin' Jeffie! 😂
I noticed it. Also nearest major league team to Omaha...
I think the Royals lunch box was about still having feelings for Kim.
Most MLB baseball fans in Omaha are Royals fans.
Yea he had it in 5x1
Gene is responsible for half of the weight that security guard gains.
great episode! The only “complaint” I have is that Old Jeff had this intimidating quality that New Jeff doesn’t have at all and instead is replaced by a sort of patheticness, for lack of a better term. I like Kiwi’s theory that the reason Old Jeff was scary is because of Gene’s paranoia but when he let’s Slippin Jimmy come out to play we then see Jeff for who he truly is, im gonna make that my headcanon lol
edit: this theory makes even more sense when you consider that it was Gene who had the pathetic quality when Jeff confronted him at the mall, but when Gene con’s his way into Jeff’s house via his mom, there’s a complete role reversal

Completely agree! This episode itself for other shows would be considered HIGH quality.
I'll reiterate.
I don't see how a real fan of the show can dislike this episode
Don't know if it was mentioned but the date of the heist would be a day or so after 23OCT 2010. When Gene was talking to and distracting the security guard he was talking about the Nebraska Cornhuskers game. He mentioned QB Martinez who had a freshman record of 435 passing yards. That occurred on 23OCT 2010...
To put this in context. Walter White was killed on his 52nd birthday which was 7SEP 2010 or just a month and a half before this.
There's also the "nip it in the bud" connection, although admittedly Gene doesn't know about that.
there are a bunch of channels that review/analyze this show, and yours is definitely one of the best! cheers!
I saw his revisiting the scene of the crime as leaving a calling card, a flashy shirt and tie a hallmark of a Saul goodman con. Perhaps a sign that Saul goodman will make a reappearance?

The new Jeff didn't have the sinister edge the first Jeff did. New Jeff just seemed like a jagoff.

Really interested what they do rest of past sequence:0
i guess even this series had a "fly" episode.
'Whatever happens next, it's not going down the way you think it is.' Yeah, I never expected this.
Another fantastic episode!

For Gene's timeline in this episode, the football they describe takes place oct 2010 so walt theoretically could still be alive in new hampshire
