I've always loved this song. Not just for the fact that it is so beautiful and underrated but the fact they pull off a dance number with two characters of vastly different sizes and yet have it still feel graceful.
The way his lip quivers while she sings really sells how moved he was by Tanya's singing. I love this scene so much. The song is gorgeous and the way Tanya's unwittingly enchants him is so good.
For those who didn’t catch on as children, the mice and cats represent the division between races and religion in the early days of America. First in An American Tale, and then in this movie as well. It seems like just a cartoon, but this scene is very powerful. The song is absolutely moving to the deepest degree, and it shows how music can completely change an entire city of people.

I never heard this song… until this girl I never really “saw” sang it in high school. I remember walking into the auditorium when she was rehearsing, solo, with just a piano… I heard the song permeating through the halls and was just drawn in. I followed the sounds, opened the door just a crack to peek in. And there she was, this innocent soul belting this beautiful melody with a solo spotlight. Smitten immediately, by both the song and her, I had to know more! Found out it was from Fievel Goes West, got the movie on VHS and watched this scene over and over again until the tape stopped playing. The dynamics, the undertones of different people from different backgrounds coming together… all of it. This song has been with me since! As an adult, I had a chance to work with the producer that worked on this and even lay down some vocals on the same mic Linda recorded her version of this song from the movie on…. To this day, in my darkest, quietest moments… I still return to this melody. These lyrics. Moving. Poignant. Understated yet deep. It’s perfection.

I always loved how Waul is moments from crying as he listens once he finds out the singer he was so desperately seeking is one of the mice. Do you suppose at that point, he REALLY wanted to go through with Plan Mouseburger anymore? Do you think at this point he actually decided he personally wanted to give what he promised the mice a try, for real? That he could ever look at a mouse he was about to eat and not hear Tanya singing in his heart and soul? It's funny how after this point Waul always seemed to give the wrong orders. Dreams to dream
In the dark of the night
When the world goes wrong,
I can still make it right
I can see so far in my dreams
I'll follow my dreams
Until they come true
Come with me
You will see what I mean
There's a world inside
No one else ever sees
You will go so far in my dreams,
Somewhere in my dreams
Your dreams will come true
*There is a star* 🌟
Waiting to guide us,
Shining inside us
When we close our eyes!
Don't let go!
If you stay close to me,
In my dreams tonight
You will see what I see!
Dreams to dream
As near as can be
Inside you and me
They always come true
