A CROSS-CULTURAL couple who tied the knot after just two months of meeting share their experiences of overcoming judgement and prejudice. Kelly Keyser, 34, and Harjot Arora, 31, met on the dating app ‘Plenty of Fish’, when he wowed her with his best pick-up line. But their love story was not met with enthusiasm from family members from both sides, with some of their closest relatives refusing to attend the wedding.

I don’t believe they are looking at them b/c of interracial relationship; they see the short hair and tattoos and may have mistaken her as a boy. B/c if her hair was long I don’t think the reaction would have been so visceral. Besides, colorism is big over there and they prefer their women to be light skinned and if your white then it’s probably even better. If she were black it would have been different. Just my opinion.

As someone who has been happy married for over 13 years to an Indian man, its very easy to get your in-laws on your side. 1. grow out your hair if possible (long hair = beauty in hindu culture mostly elderly women have short hair.) 2. show interest in your husbands culture like learn to make chai tea and few simple dishes then invite your mom in law and surprise her with your hospitality and new culinary dishes, (also show you have cooking schedule, Indians are big on routines and schedule for food. ) 3. Jeans are not seen as appropriate in rural area (I've been told myself by neighbors but once your in-law appreciate you they will defend and fight for you. 4.) Once you have kids they will be all in. 5.) Married in any culture or country is never easy in the initial stages so just keep trying and always show interest and respect for them.
Why should she change so much? Would you ask an Indian woman to cut her hair to make Western in laws happy ?

Yes, it can help to be more culturally aware and more culturally engaged, but she shouldn't have to change her whole self to integrate into her partner's family.

So, he's not a U.S. citizen,meets and married her within 2 months and now is about to get his green card.. This reminds me of 90day Fiancee or this other show where people go on holiday to different countries and end up falling for a native,who marries them,gets green card and disappears.. 🧐
It's not this easy, having actually done it myself. The permanent residency (green card) is actually conditional and lasts 2 years and must be renewed by both parties at the end or it expires.

its a different culture, she is dressed like a westerner to us its not a big deal but when you go to countries like India when you dress like that its frowned upon. its a culture thing.

There's a saying like the country alike the disguise something. Your husb should have asked you to wear lik kurty and jeans i means theres lots of nice fashion kurty or even blouse to wear on jeans or leggings. @@tara5138 well they were invaded by the British, who essentially treated darker skinned Indians worse than lighter skinned ones. Bare in mind the British were there for 400+ years before leaving remnants of that attitude are still in the culture.
