I tried this with 2 Christmas tin I found around the house I'll ask for forgiveness. When she finds out. But it worked well for me. U will keep doing this till I'm ready to go bigger. Thank you and the girls.
Thank you for your support Billy! I'm actually going to upload another video of making charcoal out of a Christmas tin I found at a garage sale recently. Thank you for your kind comment brother 🤘
Awesome video, the girls did a fantastic job filming. I do apple and hickory blend for a low and slow smoke prime rib. Salt, pepper and onion rub and baste with garlic butter.
You're a cool dude and I enjoyed your video. Great tips. I also love charcoal grilling and have two beautiful daughters as well. They are my reason for living.
Thanks Frank! We really appreciate it. Yes, you can just like the charcoal you buy. It actually performs a lot better than regular store bought charcoal when it's used right after it's made. Some of it will actually even ignite and catch sparks from flint and steel 👍
Thanks, charcoal isn't easy to come by these days. I do however have a couple of trees that were cut down a few years back. That and your technique should get me through this pandemic.
Thanks William! It seems this would be a very appropriate time to learn how to make things from home until this is over with. I hope it helps and thanks for watching. Let me know if you have any questions, I'd be glad to help. Take care brother 🤘
I’ve made charcoal from stacking a wood burning barbecue and cook a meal while making charcoal. Not the greatest yield but I’m repurposing the burning wood to also cook my meal. When I feel I get a good yield of charcoal, I douse the flame with water. It seems to work out fine.
Hey Jeff, thanks for sharing! question... I am basically doing the same thing as you, just on a larger scale with a 55 gallon drum and smaller drum inside. What I am wondering is, once i see the smaller barrel wood burning and the roman candle so-to-speak coming out of the hole in the middle, do I need to keep adding the junk wood around the 55 gallon barrel, or is that not necessary? Please advise; thanks!
I would say that is based on how hot your burn barrel already is or how hot your existing coals are. I would definitely make sure it's hot enough to burn the remaining off games, but if there are sufficient coals you can probably leave it as is. As long as the "Roman candle" is still burning then your barrel is hot enough. Wait until that goes out and the suffocate the opening
okay, I've scanned through a few comments but I have a question....I want to make a lot of charcoal to use on my webber grill for steaks and such.... Do you use lighter fluid on the charcoal ? If not, will it take a flame and hold it through out one sitting to cook say three or four steaks?
If you go to my videos on my page, I have another video showing a burn barrel method I use to make a lot more charcoal. You can modify it larger if you like. I don't use lighter fluid, you can though. I usually use old cardboard and get a small fire going first and then throw the charcoal on top and it'll catch for sure
Thanks for watching Robert! I'll make a video soon of the process with a bigger batch. It's the same process but with a 5-10 gallon can inside a burn barrel. If you want long lasting charcoal for slow burning I would suggest most hardwoods like oak, maple, hickory etc. Any wood will work, but the hardwoods will be more dense and last longer. Thanks for your support 🤘😎
i enjoyed the video, but i still don't understand the need to make charcoal for your grill. you had plenty of red hot coals in your small fire pit. i use oak & maple natural wood in my grill. i take the lid off my 22 inch webber and remove the cooking grate, then take small twigs that fall into my yard from my big oak tree and start a small fire on the bottom grate of my webber. once it gets going good i add some bigger pieces of oak. fill my grill about 1/2 full and let it burn with the lid off until i am left with red hot coals then it's time to put the lid back on and start cooking. i guess the only advantage i could see to using charcoal over wood is you get red hot coals quicker with charcoal than burning wood but not if you take into account the extra time and wood it took you to make that charcoal in the first place. what am i missing here???
Thanks for your comment. The fact you can purchase charcoal in stores tells me a lot about convenience, taste, and effort that most people prefer that are willing to purchase it or don't know how to make it. Also, not everyone uses charcoal for grilling... There's a ton of uses for charcoal! I do appreciate your comment though and understand your perspective of grilling! 🤟 happy grilling brother! 🤟
Coals produce a more steady and even cooking than a flame . Another thing is the coals are carbonized and will be ready for cooking quicker and light easy .
@@jeffrichardsonoutdoorschan5324 When those gasses start going into the fire chamber they will provide you the heat you need and you won't need to add any nor fuel

Can’t believe the dumb comments here. Knowing how to make charcoal is an important skill, especially in a survival situation. Boiling water will kill bugs but will not take out chemical impurities that could kill you. Charcoal will. It has important medicinal properties too. Jeff, if you pour pure water on the hot charcoal, the steam will partially activate it making it better for water purification. Kudos too for teaching your girls real life stuff. For all the climate change worriers and warriors, charcoal is pure carbon and if spread on your garden will help your plants grow and keep the carbon out of the atmosphere for centuries. Win win. Google biochar.
Hey Paul, thank you so much for your kind comment! I do believe that a lot of what I show are essential skills and very important skills to have in any situation. I have researched biochar briefly and the benefits for growing your own food, but I know it is definitely something that I am not completely familiar with and would love to look more into. Pouring pure water on hot charcoal activates it? What would you classify as pure...or how pure does it need to be? Thanks again man, I appreciate you!

Since you have the wood already, Why burn it to make charcoal? Why not just use it in the first place for your BBQ. What are the benefits here?
For a clean burn or heating source for cooking your food. Wood potentially gives off toxic chemicals that are not ideal for just "cooking food"
