    Grew up in the same city as Ward (Lowell, MA). He was actually the best man at my wife's uncle's wedding. In the 2nd fight w/ Gatti, Micky ruptured his eardrum on the punch the knocked him down (& amazingly still finished the fight). Gatti broke his hand in the 3rd fight. After their 3rd fight Ward retired. They became good friends & Micky actually walked Arturo out to the ring for his next fight. Ward also helped Gatti train for future fights. Gatti's wife came out later w/ news that Gatti supposedly commited suicide while they were in Brazil. This was strongly contested by everybody that knew Arturo & there was strong speculation that his wife had something to do with his death. There's a documentary covering these 3 fights that is Highly Recommended.

    Saw all three fights and it still to this day ranks among the best trilogy's the sport has ever seen. A case of a brash, fast, cocky, and skilled Arturo Gatti, who was half Canadian/half Italian and the tough, tenacious, hard as nails and 100% pure Irish, Mickey Ward, not without a few skills of his own. These two guys pounded the ever loving shit out of each other over three separate fights and came out the other side with quite a mutual respect for one another, and ended up remaining the best of friends for the rest of their lives until Gatti's untimely death in Brazil under suspicious circumstances in 2009 at the age of 37. For a time, Ward even trained Gatti during a failed comeback attempt. Shortly after his passing, Arturo was voted into the Boxing Hall of Fame and Mickey Ward went and did his induction. One of Mickey's two pit-bull's is even named Arturo.

    In the third fight Gatti almost fought the entire fight, only throwing left hands. He had broken his right hand on Ward's hip. The camera crew in his corner caught Gatti telling his trainer.
    Gatti: My hand's broke.
    Trainer: What?
    Gatti: My right hand is broke.
    Trainer: What do you want me to do? (Asking Gatti if he wanted to stop the fight.)
    Gatti: I have to keep going.
    Not that I want to try and keep going. I HAVE to keep going. Warriors.
    I think after the first fight both fighters ended up in the same hospital to get checked out. They ended up getting examined in the same room and didn't realize the other was in there as a curtain was in between them. When a doctor was checking on Ward, Ward starting answering questions (probably checking for a concussion) and Gatti heard him. They pulled the curtain back, looked at each other, smiled and asked one another "Are you okay?"
    After the third fight Ward ended up retiring from boxing and Gatti continued with his career. They had so much respect for each other that Gatti invited Ward to be in his corner for his next fight. Ward accepted the invitation and I believe he was in Gatti's corner for most of the rest of Gatti's fights.

    Honestly, in Gatti vs Ward I, the 9th round is one of the most entertaining rounds in boxing history. The highlight should have included the entire round to be fair, because it's so incredible.
    Also, in fight 2, when Ward got put down in the 3rd round, it was because that punch that hit him ruptured his ear drum. That's why he was wobbling all over the place the rest of the fight, but he still fought on to the end. Then, in fight 3, Gatti broke his right hand early in the fight and still fought through to the end. It's a great trilogy!

  • @stonecoldku4161
    @stonecoldku4161 3 года назад

    Rumor is that if Ward had won the last fight of this trilogy that the third act of the movie "The Fighter" about his life and career would've been the trilogy of fights with Gatti. But because Ward lost two of the three fights, the producers and director, thought it would be better to end the movie on a high note. With Ward winning his WBU World Title.
