alot of Scotch and Irish whiskey is aged in American bourbon barrels shipped over there. Today they also age dark beer, mainly stouts and porters in the US in these barrels.

I'm from Kentucky, in the Bluegrass area where all the bourbon distilleries are located. I once went to London to take a course at King's College. I was missing home fiercely, wanted some bourbon, so asked at the pub if they had any. They had bourbon, of course, but when the barkeep was searching I saw a bottle on a top shelf, unopened, almost like decoration, tucked in with a painting and some mascot. I pointed it out and asked about it. Barkeep had no idea how rare it was. I ended up getting drunk on Pappy Van Winkle's family reserve, 20 year, which is quite costly depending on the year, for three pounds a shot. I felt like I was back in Kentucky. Poor bastard barkeep didn't know what he was serving. The bottle was from 1994, it was 2002. I had died and gone to heaven. I still wonder if that barkeep didn't get fired for making that mistake!

I went to Makers Mark a few years ago and took the tour. Pretty great stuff. At the end , people were buying up to $3-5k in bottles out of the gift shop. The Bourbon Trail distilleries make sooooo much $ for their unique liquid.

Try the Makers Mark 46. It's great.
Take the Bourbon Trail. Recommend staying in Bardstown.
I believe that old barrels are usually sold to Scotch Distilleries or other distilleries.

Whenever you mention the vastness and sheer size of the U. S. I'm reminded of an old saying. Europeans think 100 miles is a long distance and Americans think 100 years is a long time .

I once took a tour of the Jack Daniels distillery in Lynchburg Tennessee. It's a really old distillery and there are several of the older historic buildings and even their original fire engines they had on site. I cant remember exactly how old they were but we are talking pre world war 1. You see all the steps they use to make it, was interesting. The weird part? You cant taste it. You are not allowed to buy or drink any Bourbon there. Lynchburg is in Moore county, which has been a dry county since prohibition. One of the most famous bourbons is made in a place where it's illegal to sell alcohol. Cracks me up.

The barrels that get retired after being reused for other sprits or whatever get sold for a multitude of other non related uses and my family has been selling them for years. You have whiskey barrels and wine barrels, they look basically the same but have a few differences and generally the wine barrels are higher quality however either way they get used a lot as planters for outdoor gardens by cutting them in half and using it like a giant planter pot, the whole ones get used as tables and decoration especially at wedding events, they also get used a lot in old movies for decoration/props, they're pretty common here in Texas

A lot of the used bourbon barrels are repurposed by other distillers for aging Scotch, Irish Whiskey, rum, tequila, and other spirits which have no restrictions on reusing barrels.

10,000 seedlings would produce 220,000 barrels and each holds 53 gallons? So that is Just about the amount to produce 30 million bottles or so. This means they are using a forest of trees every year because if you plant 10,000 trees a year for 60 years you would use up a tremendous amount of acreage.

The bourbon barrels can be made using other types of wood, but oak is a distinctive flavor profile that is hard to beat. Especially combiemd eith its densisty and ability to absorb moisture without leaking.
Ive seen barrels made from red oak, maple, and walnut, but they are all much harder woods and more difficult to work with.

Leftover whiskey barrels? Swish!! 😁Many whiskey barrels from many different makers are sold to private individuals who put a gallon or so of distilled water into them and then 'swish' it in the barrel for up to a month or so. The result is a beverage that is 20-40 proof and tastes like a weak version of the whiskey that was in the barrel. I did it once in Canada with a rye whiskey barrel, Crown Royal, I think. It made for a nice Christmas party that year, for sure! 😏

Bourbon barrels get sold all over the world to other distillers and some wineries. Because of the size of bourbon production it's actually cheaper to ship a barrel from Kentucky to a French Brandy maker than for them to set up and maintain their own coopers. Worked at a transshipment place handling some of these barrels in the south and it would surprise you the scale and scope of this stuff.

I enjoy the smoothness and relatively inoffensive flavors of bourbon. I'm no "professional" whiskey snob, and generally dislike the strong varied flavors associated with interesting and often pricey limited edition spirits. Don't get me started on scotch...i can never distinguish any flavors except rotten hay left in an ashtray. Ick.
