Mancini was the master of melody for the movies, so much so that it often overshadowed his exceptional ability to effectively underscore so many terrific films. Still, his collection of RCA movie music albums in "living stereo" are a treasure trove of classic compositions for the 20th century. Henry Mancini was a remarkable talent.

In 1962, after the success of “Breakfast At Tiffany’s” and “Experiment in Terror” Blake Edwards’ was off again to produce a movie about two characters, portrayed by Jack Lemmon and Lee Remick, who are going to face some love and some troubles. This isn’t a comedy by far, it perfectly captures how everybody could have a nice time, waking up someday and find themselves seemingly inseparable to alcohol… Everything seems just to be there, so real, that one forgets it is a movie. You can feel it right away when Lemmon ‘promotes’ the movie in its trailer, very personally.
Back again as well was Edwards’ dear friend Henry Mancini. While his score is pretty subtle, mostly supporting emotional scenes and contributing “party music”, it features THAT one melody, that one song, which goes under your skin, especially in combination with Johnny Mercer’s lyrics, as performed in the main titles.
Mancini in his own words: “That theme was written in about half an hour. It just came, it rolled out.” Later he and Mercer were to meet director Edwards and star Lemmon. Mancini played and Mercer sang “in his best bullfrog voice with a crack in it and the jazz inflection that was always there somewhere.… When we were through, there was a long, long, heavy, terrible silence. It probably lasted 10 seconds, but it seemed like 10 minutes. I kept staring into the keyboard. Finally I couldn’t stand it, and shifted myself around to look at Blake and Jack. And there was Jack with a tear rolling down his cheek, and Blake was misty-eyed. We didn’t have to ask them if they liked the song.” The rest is history… Enjoy!

Dear Fred I vividly remember seeing this film with my Mother at Radio City Music Hall n Rockefeller Plaza. It was always exciting going to that beautiful theater. The film was so real, Jack and Lee were so authentic in their roles. Thank you once again my friend across the waters😍

An outstanding soundtrack on an excellent movie, showing the problems and hardships, that alcoholism can cause. (Not to mention, a very good love story, between Jack Lemmon and Lee Remick) Henry Mancini hit a grand slam, with this one. REALLY capturing the mood and flavor of the movie. Thanks for posting 😊😊

In the 60s an 70s, I used to listen to a station that played that kind of music. I was 16 and would never admit to it. But in th mid 80s, I met a wild and crazy biker who I started to like, but what sealed the deal was, that song played somewhere, and out of his mouth he uttered, days of wine and roses! I knew I'd found my man!!

Yes a melody that is played out
silently behind the unfolding terror of alcoholism and addiction. The melody has such a sweet and sorrowful feel for the loss of oneself to the addiction of a drug or alcoholism. A beautiful melody of sad loss of the best of a person driven by the desire to be blissfully high over anything or anyone.
      Mancini brilliantly captures it perfectly.
