I was actually working on my first animatic and came across this, it's a very helpful tutorial. I personally use Allight Motion and ibis paint X which are both free and very useful! One tip for storyboarding I have is to use text rather then drawing, it is more rough but it personally works for me!
Just finished watching, and I have to say, this video is going to be SO helpful to people who are starting out with digital animation! I know that when I first started making my weird animatic/pmv meshes I had absolutely zero idea what I was doing and ended up having to go back and re-do so many little things. Having this advice back then, especially the stuff regarding storyboarding, would have been invaluable and I’m so glad you decided to share your advice!! Your art style is super impressive, too-of course after watching this video I had to go and see your Good Omens animatic in full and I was just absolutely blown away by your use of color and blocky textured shading (how unique?!)! I genuinely haven’t seen anything like what you make before and you really have SO much talent for doing art (and also for explaining your process in ways that others can easily understand). Thanks again for posting this!
you don’t understand how much I appreciate this having no background music/noise, whenever I watch tutorial videos, it always makes me distracted and I get upset and can’t pay attention to what they’re saying. 😭💕
This is video was so helpful you definitely deserve more attention with your art skills and the quality of these videos. So glad RUclips decided to recommend me this! Subscribed in an instant Edit: also can I ask what brushes you use for lineart sketching and colour-
Thank you sm !!! When i use photoshop i use the okeefe brushset you get when you take patrick okeefe's art course. The main brushes i used here though were just a hard round and hard square (no opacity change, no size pen pressure) + the photoshop polygon selection tool did a lot of work

i tried starting an animatic years ago but i got overwhelmed by the first drawing cause i didn't really know how to draw, esp people. now that i have much more experience and knowledge, i might try one i LOVE your style you did in the example btw
I loved this. As someone who gets super overwhelmed when I have to learn new things, breaking down what I needed to learn first makes it a lot better for me! Short, to the point, and easy! ❤ Now to sit down and start…
Thanks for this simple guide, it took away some of my fear to start making animatics! Also immediately recognized the Hypnospace Outlaw sound effect lol awesome game
This is honestly really, really helpful, the reassurance that you don't need expensive or complicated programs really lifted a huge weight off of my shoulders, as someone who can't afford paid programs but really wants to make animatics.
This is brilliant! The way you broke down the steps really helped make the process look a lot less scary! I've been putting off starting my own (I overthink a lot and a bit of a perfectionist-) but this really helped push me to try!
Omggggggg you’re so underrated!! Thank you so much. I’ve been doing tiny animatics for so long and just give up like a few days later but this rlly boosted my inspiration.

i’ve been making animatics since april 2022. in total i’ve made 26 which is a lot more than i thought. most of them are pretty low quality (only a couple are fully colored) and are vent animatics on another account (i have some omori animatics on this account). i’ve learned a lot and i’ve been realizing more and more that storyboarding or just brainstorming is super important. i’ve made some by just winging it and they look good but most of the time i feel stuck at a point so i make it anyway. so yeah i wish i had a guide like this when i was a young animatic artist

I’ve been making animatics for almost 6 years now lol but it’s always cool to see someone else’s progress! honestly this is inspiring me to work on my first animatic i started months ago, but got discouraged about!! thanks, this really helped me put it into bite sized chunks. its much less intimidating, now.
Personally when I work on animations I start on paper. Storyboarding on paper can really make the process less intimidating and I always feel more inspired to draw what I imagine and not try to make it perfect!❤
Thanks for the tutorial! I'm not artistically talented enough to draw, but I've seen hundreds of animatics and I've always been interested about the "behind the scenes"
This was super helpful! I have an idea, and I think I’ll actually make it once I finish a map part. This video made making an animatic feel a lot less daunting of a task.
I have a bug question for the storyboarding!! What program do you use and how do sou layer it out? Like when yiu started to colour ut? This genuinly confused me, is it okay to know what program does this? ALSOS UPER HELPFUL VIDEO!!! :D 4:00
TLDR; you dont need anything fancy for personal projects. free programs like MSPaint or MediBang would suffice for storyboards and thumbnails, can't go wrong doing it traditionally either, 150 printed pages is about 23-30 minutes of anime episode storyboards if youre doing traditional. storyboards don't need to be perfect. storyboards can be done in something as simple as MS Paint, I use Medibang due to the layers (cus my storyboard file template aren't transparent, so erasing is a hassle if Im not using layers, it just a me thing specifically though.) as well as folders, therefore I can have all my pages in one spot compared to MS Paints's single file save unless MSPaint has changed these last 15 years. Storyboards are basically a bit cleaner thumbnails (and storyboards dont gotta be perfect art either, in the industry they need to be clear and legible, that's it. cus concepts get scrapped often in that process) Also never forget animators and storyboarders did everything on Pencil and Paper first before digital, so thats also available to you. Hell, Anime still does the early process on paper still in some studios, even their storyboards, hell it's probably the cheapest option in terms of budget compared to these always asking for money subscription services to use the simplest of brushes that was once free at some point- you call apps (I'm only 26 btw ive been using these digital softwares for as long as theyve been free.) you can get all that pencil, paper or a notebook at a dollar store. Traditional is especially good for thumbnailing cus inspiration attacks at any moment, and a notebok is probably easier to carry around than a laptop or tablet. in My Expierence printing out roughly 150 pages is enough for a 23-30 minute anime episode, which you can print at a local library for like a few cents, and maybe even get it scanned there (flashdrives are also pretty cheap these days.) There are plenty of printable storyboard sheets out here or you can make your own using official behind the scenes production pages as a reference. source; I've been self taught making comics and animation on MSPaint and traditional for years before moving on to better apps (Medibang and flipaclip aren't exactly better to some people, but it works for me and it's free.) as well as watching plenty of behind the scenes footage of animations and films within the industry (live action films draw their storyboards too!).
YES I’ve been DYING to figure out how people do the cool zoom fade thing with animatics but couldn’t figure out how because im as smart as a rock THANK YOU🙏🙏
Tysm! I’ve been making animatics for a few years, (most have been unlisted.) and I’ve never even thought of using a storyboard.. I can tell it’s the right option for me though because most of the time each part looks very similar. You’re a life saver!!! Or maybe just an animation saver 😭😭
this was so helpful omg...i have a hard time understanding videos like this if they are super lengthy and over complicate the subject, but this did it perfectly =D and i can even understand it fully woohoo, thank youuuu
wonderful video! incredibly helpful, thank you! one of my big problems with animatics is that ill start at the beginning and work hard on it but not plan out every scene first, and thus i end up either forgetting what i wanted to do in certain scenes, or id get sick of doing a frame/not getting through it quick enough and give up. i really want to make more videos and this video is very helpful! again, thank you!
this video was suuuper useful thank you so much!! i do have one question though, how do you upload it to youtube with the music? like uhhh, i’ve heard that youtube can be weird if you use music that doesn’t belong to you. do you just credit the original artist, or do you more so just hope and pray youtube doesn’t take ur video down?
I've never had any issues with my videos taken down and all my animatics are copyrighted. If you wanna be extra same you can always use covers of songs (I've seen this done with a Teen Idle and Choke animatic, one being a cover by another artist and the other being covered by the animatic artist and they are both uncopyrighted.) Feel free to credit the artist in the desc. if you want! i did so in this video since it's a smaller artist but if the video gets copyrighted (youtube will tell you before you upload) then youtube itself will put credit in the desc. you can see this on any of my animatics by just clicking read more on my description. I think youtube, and creators of all kind, have a silent agreement with artists that its chill. So, i think youtube will just copyright your video (no strike, just means you can't make money off the video) and then leave you alone hope this helps !!!
This is really helpful! One i thing that helps me is to storyboard on paper because then i can easily change it and i can see it more clearly, but that’s just my personal preference!
funny how i was actually making a storyboard for good omens as well when i stumbled upon this video, anyway your guides have been really helpful, thanks!!
I clicked on this video not knowing that you're a good omens fan BUT OH MY STARS THIS TUTORIAL IS EVEN MORE COOL NOW THAT ITS MADE A FELLOW INEFFABLE CHILD😭 because good omens fans make the best content
I love this! The only other thing I worry about posting animatics though is the copyright. I don't look to make a profit but everyone I talk to tells me horror stories about copywriting and plagiarizing music. What's the deal with that? (sorry if my English is bad its not my first language)
The whole process of making an animatic is very simple for me and familiar, weirdly enough I find myself struggling on which artstyle I want to use since I have multiple.
I really needed this! I just started getting into animating and am working on my first animation (1minute and 46seconds). I didn’t know where to start till I found this video and now I can finally work on it! Thank you for your tutorial!!
like i’ve tried making animatics before but never even got halfway thru because i never had a plan and it just dawned on me that that would probablyyyyy be helpful
this is extremely helpful, but I can't help but laugh because as soon as I saw your persona I was like "you definitely know who Gerard Way is" and then I saw the lyrics to "Brother" at 3:28 lmaooo
Oh wow, it's not often I see my favorite music pop up in the wild! LOVE the descendents ♥ this video was very motivating, thank you for making it friend 😊
thank you for this!! ive been wanting to make animatics/ since 2016-2017 when i was in middle school, but i was too scared. now that im at art school i want to challenge myself!
Thanks, this is really helpful! One question though, how do you get permission to use a song? Do you contact the artist or record holder directly, or are you allowed to post it on RUclips without their permission so long as you don't profit from it?
If you’re not profiting off of it, anything public online is free to use. If money gets involved you do need to check what type of copyright is on the song- if you mess up, you probably still won’t get in legal trouble, RUclips will just demonetise it if the songs artist sends complaint.
Very late faq i see in the comments a lot !

@axlorg89 Basically putting text with what your thinking of during the part of the song.

I just started getting into animating and am working on my first animation (1minute and 46seconds). I didn’t know where to start till I found this video and now I can finally work on it! Thank you for your tutorial!!
THANK YOUUUU i’m making my first one right now and this was reassuring to know i’m on the right track :D and I learned some tips too
like i’ve tried making animatics before but never even got halfway thru because i never had a plan and it just dawned on me that that would probablyyyyy be helpful
this is extremely helpful, but I can't help but laugh because as soon as I saw your persona I was like "you definitely know who Gerard Way is" and then I saw the lyrics to "Brother" at 3:28 lmaooo
I love your artstyle! Also, thanks for the vid. I really needed this lol
I got jumpscared by good omens, amphibia, and crane wives HDJASBNDKLJAS
Oh wow, it's not often I see my favorite music pop up in the wild! LOVE the descendents ♥ this video was very motivating, thank you for making it friend 😊
Not me thinking of animatic battle when she said animatics 😭🙏
thank you for this!! ive been wanting to make animatics/ since 2016-2017 when i was in middle school, but i was too scared. now that im at art school i want to challenge myself!
@@graphgiraffe Ok, thank you!
Subbed. Gotta support the young artists who cook out here lmaooo
