On this video (or the VW dash) in some places you applied contact adhesive to ONE surface, instead of both surface before securing the fabric in place. On my 1963 Thunderbird, the Ford manual also suggests contact cement, ONE surface only. WHY or when should I use then secure fabric gluing one side only?

It is advisable to start out using the traditional upholstery yellow glue (brushable). I use it for the VW dashboard. Very interesting how the stretching.... the video you showed abut which direction the leather/vinyl stretches is so crucial to successfully make this job work. Amazing work Mentor
+chris diaz I´m glad you've found the video useful! ...stretchy vinyl material helps a lot to make molds on concave/convex and bumpy areas. Do not stretch it too much...just enough as if it were leather material...if you stretch it too much, there is a risk that it would not recuperate its original flat form, and it would be distorted and longer.
+chris diaz Some upholsterers are devoted to perform certain upholstery projects...I'd say specialists in one field...the 'leather wrapping of dashboards' is one of these fields...in this case they should follow these steps to get steady molds in order to ease and make the procedure faster.

Gracias por su aliento positivo de seguir adelante ahora me acabo de comprar una maquina singer 251-12 que coce muy bonito pero lo que ando batallando poquito es como hacer par que la costura se alarge ppoquito porque esta muy corta y yo hago unos hongo con el logotipo de el nfl y se me venden muy bien y tengo que hacer una costura y batallaba con una maquina regular para el vynil pero ahora me gusta mucho y practico cada ves que puedo estoy muy contento con maquina y si en algo les puedo ayudar a conseguir algo de herramienta seria un placer yo vivo en Albuquerque Nuevo Mexico a sus ordenes
+alejandro molina Que bien Alejandro...la máquina que tiene es parecida a una singer que yo tengo, la 241-12...son máquinas fuertes y cosen bien bonito..efectivamente la puntada máxima es de 4 mm...voy a checar el mecanismo excéntrico que es el que regula la puntada...a ver si de suerte se pudiera alargar algo...yo le aviso.

Pretty cool Cechaflo! I imagine these vinyl templates will be reusable as well. How much should someone expect to pay for a leather covered dash if you already have a template? And how much should one expect to pay for one that is custom and a template has to be created? Thanks for posting brother....love your work?

In point of fact, some templates could be reusable, provided that a customer would send you a similar project...Maybe, you've realized this dashboard is not like the original...the display curved area is wider. And of course, to get new templates is not an easy task and the price would be higher. My son and I, have in mind to keep on posting more upholstery videos!
El vinil que uso en este video para moldear es estirable para poder lograr las formas. Como podemos darnos cuenta no he considerado la 'tolerancia de costura' que puede ser 1 cm o 1/2" según nos parezca mas cómodo. Tendría que usar vinil estirable dos veces. Uno para sacar el molde que va a tener 'rastros de pegamento' en algunos puntos y otro 'limpio' para copiar y agregarle la 'tolerancia de costura' y 'los puntos de referencia' para facilitar la costura de la piezas. Para el proceso de pegado si va a usar el pegamento amarillo tendría que aplicarse a ambas superficies, luego dejar secar y unir al final. En un video siguiente yo muestro el pegado 'en húmedo' para ciertas partes que si se puede aplicar en el cuero/piel porque ésta tiene 'poros' para evaporar el solvente del pegamento. Si se aplicara pegamento húmedo al vinil este no 'respira' y se quedaría asi 'humedo' por mucho tiempo y propenso a despegarse en cualquier momento.

3M are a good starting point, maybe find a localish chemical company and ask them what their best adhesive is quoting surfaces needed to be bonded and environment. I bet most of these custom leather designs would suffer badly from prolonged and sustained sunlight and temperatures. I've been recommended an adhesive called AF178 that I'll be using next week for covering some alloy tube/3d printed part for a Miata so I'll let you know how that goes, I'll be putting the piece under a 1000W light to see how the adhesive copes.

Y si lo boy a hacer en vinil ! Puedo ponerle glue así como usted y luego quitarlo o no ? Que me recomienda
El vinil que uso en este video para moldear es estirable para poder lograr las formas. Como podemos darnos cuenta no he considerado la 'tolerancia de costura' que puede ser 1 cm o 1/2" según nos parezca mas cómodo.
