What I took away here is to not be as worried about using high bounce wedges in firm conditions... if anything, if you play varying conditions, err on the side of having more bounce than too little. If I played super firm conditions 90% of the time I may consider something with lower bounce... but for me that's rare except for a few weeks in mid summer. I play 10* bounce in my 60 and 14* in my 55... and was always a little apprehensive when I play the occasional firm track.. not anymore! Thanks guys for some data validation!
I love the content, USUALLY!! One cannot test wedges on artificial turf, the dirt is where the bounce matters most. Yes you can recreate a fluffy lie, however the soil, dirt, sand is where the bounce performance matters most, go outside please.

So informative, yet almost comically inconclusive. As with all things golf, there is no answer- it all goes back to the player and the shot. I can hit the same distance with any wedge bounce off a mat, but put me on a course in the wind, with a bunker to clear, or a false front, or convex green, rough, fairway, fringe- this information is what will eliminate the variables one by one until a shot can be chosen with a higher degree of confidence in the execution. I can still hit a low checker over a bunker onto an away sloping green out of the rough with a low bounce wedge- but I better know WTF I'm doing! I'd like to see what results you get from these two wedges when you start to manipulate the face and/or delivery. I'd like to say that's where you may see some more pronounced differences but after this- who knows!
This is some incredible info/tests here guys...Love it. You're really changing the game of golf I think honestly, and the way guys approach getting fit and buying clubs. Real innovators. Also, I kind of knew these results would happen after I saw your lie board post on IG the other day. Seeing how far behind the ball you really start to enter turf on pitch shots was eye opening. Perhaps this is why Ping wedges spin so much....They all tend to cater to higher bounce designs (other than that TS grind).
I recently purchased a 60 degree 12 bounce, hoping to get the same yardage as my 60 degree 8 bounce but with more spin on half to full shots from tight lies. What I have learned from a relatively small sample size is I am consistently hitting the higher bounce wedge shorter and with LESS spin.
Matt and ian just released a new video on bounce for wedges. Off the back of that video I revisited this one and understood a lot more second time around. The short game and wedges are a whole new ball game and love their work and insights just gold! Best golf site bar none!

Phil Mickelson says that for his higher speed wedge shots off of turf (like a full flop) he actually wants to hit the turf first and have the bounce of the club literally bounce it onto the ball. He says it promotes a high flight with a dead bounce that stops relatively quickly. Thought that was interesting. Kind of takes the pressure off us amateurs who are trying to nip the ball perfectly. I mean, I can do that, but for the average mortal...;)
I use a 54/12 and a 58/4 to cover all the bases but now I need to do some more thinking. 25 years ago I played a round with a woman who was an assistant pro at the club where Lindsay K. teaches. She used to play rounds with Moe Norman in Florida back in the day. She was easily the best wedge player I’ve ever laid eyes on. She could hit little 80 yard knock down wedges that didn’t go more than 15 feet in the air. One or two skips and they would stop. She won a lot of money from Moe and he hated losing money. Thanks for this food for thought.
I Carry a Vokey 54-10 V Grind and a 58-06 K Grind (the low bounce version that B V seems to have discontinued). Along with my 46-08 & 50-08 F Grind (PW & GW), I have 3 different Bounce/Grind options for the given Lie/Circumstances and the type of shot desired.
Great video from the best golf content team on the web. Ian and Matt consistently provide insightful and well produced videos that I love to watch. This one was no exception. I play in softer turf conditions and have the Glide 3 56 WS wedge with 14 degrees of bounce. I love it from about 90 yards on turf and out of the bunkers it is pure magic. My other wedge is a 60 ES grind with about 8-10 degrees of bounce. First generation Glide wedge which just sits perfectly to my eye. I use it on some greenside bunker shots and touch/finesse shots around the green. Need to get grooves redone but this will not come out of my bag. Learn so much from you guys. Keep it up.
Telling for me was with the 70 yard soft turf the Standard Deviation on the Low Bounce wedge implies that it was significantly more unpredictable output. And then this flipped about with 70 yard firm turf. Low bounce had (mostly) tighter deviations. I think that predictability with the wedges by having the "matched bounce to conditions" is key. Especially when not as skilled as Matt!

I play golf in Florida and it is always wet in the morning. the Ping Glide 3.0 has been great. However, when I purchased it I didn't get fitted, I know I know...bad! After seeing this it really makes me want to do a wedge fitting. BTW, our outdoor season is just starting back up, so you need to come down here and do your testing!
Your club testing timing with relation to my next purchase is almost prophetic. My next set of clubs to purchase are the wedges so ALL the wedge testing info is relevant now for me. Therefore I say Nooooooo to the break in wedge testing. Great info again guys. Thanks
Matt: I know from experience that lowish bounce with 58/60 degree wedge works very nicely from bunkers. Just open the club and the effective bounce increases to allow a standard bunker shot to work
Great video I’m a digger so always think I need high bounce wedges also crap out of bunkers. Get worried if I go on firm turf with high bounce but seems I don’t need to worry now
Hi guys great video yet again fantastic information. Was in American golf in the uk yesterday looking at some wedges and I found the ping glide 3.0 was so much more pleasing to my eye I may purchase 3 wedges very shortly.
I absolutely love your videos! The only thing I could recommend is maybe do some close ups/slo-mos for certain things. When you guys were holding the wedges and describing the degree angle and change in bounce, it would've been cool to see them up close to see the comparison. Yes I personally know the difference in look and purpose, but I even enjoy seeing close ups of things like this. Favorite golf channel on youtube!
Of course these videos are enjoyable, do I think you should continue to go down the rabbit hole, of course I do. I felt no strain or stress during this testing at all. #dancematty we want more of this. Nigel Day higher bounce definitely isn’t better for everyone. It’s just one element of performance. Lots of high speed players need the opposite and want to spin the ball less. Lots of variables involved here.
So, use as much bounce as humanly possible until the ground is hard enough that is makes you hitt 150 yard blades - because you will get on average more consistent spin with lower launch angles; and for me personally, the added confidence that a wedge with thicker bounce gives is enormously understated in importance - thus I think the successful reviews you see with the new Taylormade High Toe Bigfoot wedge - and the 58 degree 14 bounce Ping wedge you tested has a very similar 'large width' bounce that I would encourage everyone to look at.
I appreciate the way this video explains this in depth, but simple enough for me to understand. I am curious what the results might be if done on real turf. It seems that a hitting board could potentially skew the results. I am wondering if the results would be consistent.
This was excellent. I currently have a Vokey SM6 52.08 and a 58.10, which have been, if anything, less than friendly to my game around the green. My bunker shots with the 58* are more hit or miss than in previous years. The wedges are currently 2 years old. I have been considering replacing with a 54* and 58 or 59* in the Ping Stealth but wanted to know what major differences I could expect with increased bounce. (P790 AW is 50*, so better gapping...) As it appears to be the case here, I need not worry about too much bounce. Index has slid badly from 12.5 to 20 in 2 years, and while this is only a part of the equation (swing is a mess) some additional confidence on the finesse hots would be nice. Thanks for this.
I find the biggest difference in bounce comes from downhill lies. like, best of luck pitching it on a tight downhill lie with a vokey k grind 🙈 I dont know if the 200/300 revs difference in those conditions would influence my buying decision, but a very interesting test none the less. Always quality content from you guys, keep it coming!
I still hold Trevinos statement as true; Good spin comes from solid contact with the ground AND the ball. OR even bouncing the club from the ground into the ball. ( Higher bounce enable that contact.) Hence, I'd really like to see wedge shots from high pegged balls. That would (by the opposite) expose the need for good ground interaction. (As would balls being played from plexglass surfaces. )
Great content again!!! Until recently I’ve always self fit wedges on loft and look. Since being probably fitted. More bounce for me (12*)was a great benefit with lots of heal relief in 60 not only helped bunker play dramatically,also improved technique. To little bounce on previous log wedge, got in bad habits of getting handle behind ball at address( trying to add bounce?) Could you guys investigate how fitting can help technique. I play tight firm couch grass in Australia. Most would normally recommend less than 12* bounce??
Really makes sense for me. I switched to an SM7 lob wedge and HATED it. They moved the CG higher on that club. I like to play with a fair bit of bounce - must be I just couldn't get the strike high enough on that wedge to hit soft pitches with it. Everything came off like bullets, granted they were spinning like a top.

I'd love to see what a totally skulled wedge shot looks like on GC Quad. Because the high bounce/firm turf strike looked super low on the face but obviously flew okay. I blade wedges ALL the time (like accidentally hitting a 80 yard wedge 150 yards) and would be fascinated to see how the strike location, launch angle, ball speed and spin rate differs from a quality wedge shot.
My home course plays soft in winter and hard in summer. What would you do? 1 wedge low bounce, 1 high or stick with either in both and choose between different grinds.
I bought £600’s worth ( 3 wedges) of Edel wedges, worst mistake I made, the bounces are 16, 18 and 22 on 49, 54 and 59 degree. No matter the ground condition they just dig, yet my RTX 3 2 dot and now my SM7s just don’t dig. I really struggle with my Edels around the green, but it’s not an issue for my Vokeys, the fitter of the Edels says it’s al technique, I don’t change my technique when I use my Vokeys so I have no idea what’s going on. Would have been nice to see a face on view of Matts technique, I do have a little shaft lean which the fitter says is killing me (always with the high bounce Edel, never with the ,owner bounce Vokeys.)
My takeaway is that launch differences are far too insignificant to be considered over simply choosing which bounce will help you make the best contact you can.
Great stuff. My fitter recommended a Ping Glide 3.0 with the wide sole (got the 56 degree in SS). I resisted but finally went with his reco and it was a great call. This info backs up his take. That said, I would be interested in flop shot results. Come on, Matty. Just one more. :-) FWIW, I realized that I rarely do flop shots, so it shouldn't be my main reason for picking the bounce of my club.
I have a lot of trouble with bounce here in Oregon. It’s wet all winter then doesn’t rain all summer so I basically have to have low bounce one season and high the other.
Playing off 4 and notice I don't take divots with wedge shots (full or half). I basically seem to brush the turf and have wedges around the 10/12 degree bounce. Obviously I need to test, but what would your opinion be around possibly getting wedges with a lower bounce?
I’m here 1 year later but I am about to buy some new MD5 wedges and curious what I should go with. I want to get a 56 and 60 and I play full shots and open faced shots with both degrees. I play on firm conditions and their club selector states I should do 56 S grind with 10 degrees bounce and 60 degree S Grind with 12 degrees. Thoughts??
TXG, Awesome info here, since we now have all this info on bounce, spin with wet vs dry, do you know what happens when the ball lands on a wet green? If the ball and club are wet I would believe most times the green will also be wet. I would be very interested in this test.
Rick Miller Lot of variables in that proposal - and it will ultimately depend on the indentation made by the ball on the green ie no pitch mark equals no grip for the ball to stop - then 1/3 to 1/2 a ball depth the ball can grip Then with other factors like a really wet green with rain or heavy due grip taken away again Golf is hard - even when you get better.....🤩
I was hoping for a bit more testing, like flops and sand... playing in AZ course conditions change while 5 star courses that water a lot remain medium and can be soft and then lower end courses can be hard as bricks in fairways and bunkers, how do I set up my wedges for such vast differences? 54/14 & 58/8 and use as needed?
I am in the market for wedges and have no idea what bounce/grind to get. I did the wedge finder questionnaire on the Vokey website and if recommended me a 12 degree D grind lob wedge. I found one at golf town and that leading edge was so far off the floor it was scary. I kinda wish I never heard of bounce/grind and just bought whatever was the best deal...
I just have a 54 58 64 in 10 degrees bounce with a shallow angle of attack. I tend to have a square swing and prefer not to open my club like Dustin Johnson. Since I have a square swing like Steve stricker, should I stay with the ten or would 8 degrees be a better option?
Is it possible to have a nice low sitting profile (leading edge close to turf), while having some decent bounce? Seems like they go hand in hand. Love the extra forgiveness in medium bounce soles, not a big fan of how they look on tight lies.
So, as someone who plays in the deep South with baked out fairways, and baked out areas around the green, with the high bounce showing better results, is that the route I need to go?
I found the more bounce i play with the easier wedge play is , all my glide 2.0 wedges 50 , 54 and 60 have 14 ° of bounce and the 60 Which I mainly use out of green side bunkers or if I need to Cary a bunker to a tight pin is so easy to use....
Hey guys, I've run into a small issue after purchasing new wedges from taylormade. I got fitted for a 50 with 10 bounce, 54 bent to 55 with 12 bounce and 60 with 10 bounce. The wedge I am having a problem with is the 50, I could only get a 52 bent strong to 51 due to an ordering error and it plays as 8 bounce, as a player that generally is leaning more towards higher bounce do you guys think this will cause an issue in terms of strike and distance consistency, if so is there anything I can do to fix it as best I can.

The chart about 70yds Firm turf shows the low bounce club spinning less, but has 2yds less total as compared to the high bounce club, it has the same carry distance, but 2yds more total and has more spin then the low bounce club??? That doesn't add up for me.....
I was expecting a much larger discrepancy in the numbers given such a large (10 degree) difference in the bounce. Would it be fair then to expect negligible difference between wedges with closer bounce, say an 8 degree and 12 degree? I imagine the Joe Average golfer would notice no difference at all.
Not 59.05. 6 degrees is effective. Actual bounce is 23 degrees with super narrow sole. Effective very different for each OEM because there's no standard measurement. Good idea for video though 👍
Interesting. But you tested extremes. I get why you did it but...Would be better to see standard specs with different grinds, which is how most people buy clubs.

Nigel Day higher bounce definitely isn’t better for everyone. It’s just one element of performance. Lots of high speed players need the opposite and want to spin the ball less. Lots of variables involved here.
So, use as much bounce as humanly possible until the ground is hard enough that is makes you hitt 150 yard blades - because you will get on average more consistent spin with lower launch angles; and for me personally, the added confidence that a wedge with thicker bounce gives is enormously understated in importance - thus I think the successful reviews you see with the new Taylormade High Toe Bigfoot wedge - and the 58 degree 14 bounce Ping wedge you tested has a very similar 'large width' bounce that I would encourage everyone to look at.

I appreciate the way this video explains this in depth, but simple enough for me to understand. I am curious what the results might be if done on real turf. It seems that a hitting board could potentially skew the results. I am wondering if the results would be consistent.
This was excellent. I currently have a Vokey SM6 52.08 and a 58.10, which have been, if anything, less than friendly to my game around the green. My bunker shots with the 58* are more hit or miss than in previous years. The wedges are currently 2 years old. I have been considering replacing with a 54* and 58 or 59* in the Ping Stealth but wanted to know what major differences I could expect with increased bounce. (P790 AW is 50*, so better gapping...) As it appears to be the case here, I need not worry about too much bounce. Index has slid badly from 12.5 to 20 in 2 years, and while this is only a part of the equation (swing is a mess) some additional confidence on the finesse hots would be nice. Thanks for this.
I find the biggest difference in bounce comes from downhill lies. like, best of luck pitching it on a tight downhill lie with a vokey k grind 🙈
I dont know if the 200/300 revs difference in those conditions would influence my buying decision, but a very interesting test none the less. Always quality content from you guys, keep it coming!
I still hold Trevinos statement as true; Good spin comes from solid contact with the ground AND the ball.
OR even bouncing the club from the ground into the ball.
( Higher bounce enable that contact.)
Hence, I'd really like to see wedge shots from high pegged balls.
That would (by the opposite) expose the need for good ground interaction.
(As would balls being played from plexglass surfaces. )

Until recently I’ve always self fit wedges on loft and look. Since being probably fitted. More bounce for me (12*)was a great benefit with lots of heal relief in 60 not only helped bunker play dramatically,also improved technique. To little bounce on previous log wedge, got in bad habits of getting handle behind ball at address( trying to add bounce?)
Could you guys investigate how fitting can help technique. I play tight firm couch grass in Australia. Most would normally recommend less than 12* bounce??
Really makes sense for me. I switched to an SM7 lob wedge and HATED it. They moved the CG higher on that club. I like to play with a fair bit of bounce - must be I just couldn't get the strike high enough on that wedge to hit soft pitches with it. Everything came off like bullets, granted they were spinning like a top.
Can you do the same test and talk about how Chipping and pitching are affected by bounce?

That's why I like bounce on my taylormade tour prefferd 56 08 and Mill grind 60 09 wedge. To me it feels like a good bounce on all surfaces

Bit heavier and softer is generally best for wedges versus irons

I'd love to see what a totally skulled wedge shot looks like on GC Quad. Because the high bounce/firm turf strike looked super low on the face but obviously flew okay. I blade wedges ALL the time (like accidentally hitting a 80 yard wedge 150 yards) and would be fascinated to see how the strike location, launch angle, ball speed and spin rate differs from a quality wedge shot.

My home course plays soft in winter and hard in summer. What would you do? 1 wedge low bounce, 1 high or stick with either in both and choose between different grinds.

I bought £600’s worth ( 3 wedges) of Edel wedges, worst mistake I made, the bounces are 16, 18 and 22 on 49, 54 and 59 degree. No matter the ground condition they just dig, yet my RTX 3 2 dot and now my SM7s just don’t dig. I really struggle with my Edels around the green, but it’s not an issue for my Vokeys, the fitter of the Edels says it’s al technique, I don’t change my technique when I use my Vokeys so I have no idea what’s going on. Would have been nice to see a face on view of Matts technique, I do have a little shaft lean which the fitter says is killing me (always with the high bounce Edel, never with the ,owner bounce Vokeys.)
My takeaway is that launch differences are far too insignificant to be considered over simply choosing which bounce will help you make the best contact you can.
Great stuff. My fitter recommended a Ping Glide 3.0 with the wide sole (got the 56 degree in SS). I resisted but finally went with his reco and it was a great call. This info backs up his take. That said, I would be interested in flop shot results. Come on, Matty. Just one more. :-)
FWIW, I realized that I rarely do flop shots, so it shouldn't be my main reason for picking the bounce of my club.
I have a lot of trouble with bounce here in Oregon. It’s wet all winter then doesn’t rain all summer so I basically have to have low bounce one season and high the other.
Playing off 4 and notice I don't take divots with wedge shots (full or half). I basically seem to brush the turf and have wedges around the 10/12 degree bounce. Obviously I need to test, but what would your opinion be around possibly getting wedges with a lower bounce?
I’m here 1 year later but I am about to buy some new MD5 wedges and curious what I should go with. I want to get a 56 and 60 and I play full shots and open faced shots with both degrees. I play on firm conditions and their club selector states I should do 56 S grind with 10 degrees bounce and 60 degree S Grind with 12 degrees.

Awesome info here, since we now have all this info on bounce, spin with wet vs dry, do you know what happens when the ball lands on a wet green? If the ball and club are wet I would believe most times the green will also be wet. I would be very interested in this test.
Rick Miller Lot of variables in that proposal - and it will ultimately depend on the indentation made by the ball on the green ie
no pitch mark equals no grip for the ball to stop - then 1/3 to 1/2 a ball depth the ball can grip
Then with other factors like a really wet green with rain or heavy due grip taken away again

I was hoping for a bit more testing, like flops and sand... playing in AZ course conditions change while 5 star courses that water a lot remain medium and can be soft and then lower end courses can be hard as bricks in fairways and bunkers, how do I set up my wedges for such vast differences? 54/14 & 58/8 and use as needed?

I am in the market for wedges and have no idea what bounce/grind to get. I did the wedge finder questionnaire on the Vokey website and if recommended me a 12 degree D grind lob wedge. I found one at golf town and that leading edge was so far off the floor it was scary. I kinda wish I never heard of bounce/grind and just bought whatever was the best deal...
I just have a 54 58 64 in 10 degrees bounce with a shallow angle of attack. I tend to have a square swing and prefer not to open my club like Dustin Johnson. Since I have a square swing like Steve stricker, should I stay with the ten or would 8 degrees be a better option?

Is it possible to have a nice low sitting profile (leading edge close to turf), while having some decent bounce? Seems like they go hand in hand. Love the extra forgiveness in medium bounce soles, not a big fan of how they look on tight lies.
So, as someone who plays in the deep South with baked out fairways, and baked out areas around the green, with the high bounce showing better results, is that the route I need to go?
I found the more bounce i play with the easier wedge play is , all my glide 2.0 wedges 50 , 54 and 60 have 14 ° of bounce and the 60 Which I mainly use out of green side bunkers or if I need to Cary a bunker to a tight pin is so easy to use....
Hey guys, I've run into a small issue after purchasing new wedges from taylormade. I got fitted for a 50 with 10 bounce, 54 bent to 55 with 12 bounce and 60 with 10 bounce. The wedge I am having a problem with is the 50, I could only get a 52 bent strong to 51 due to an ordering error and it plays as 8 bounce, as a player that generally is leaning more towards higher bounce do you guys think this will cause an issue in terms of strike and distance consistency, if so is there anything I can do to fix it as best I can.

Did you throw out a lot of shots as outliers? If so, how many shots did you have to throw out for each test as too far out of the target range?
If you decrease the loft on a 56 degree wedge to 55 degrees, does that open the face or close the face?

The chart about 70yds Firm turf shows the low bounce club spinning less, but has 2yds less total as compared to the high bounce club, it has the same carry distance, but 2yds more total and has more spin then the low bounce club??? That doesn't add up for me.....
I was expecting a much larger discrepancy in the numbers given such a large (10 degree) difference in the bounce. Would it be fair then to expect negligible difference between wedges with closer bounce, say an 8 degree and 12 degree? I imagine the Joe Average golfer would notice no difference at all.
Not 59.05. 6 degrees is effective. Actual bounce is 23 degrees with super narrow sole. Effective very different for each OEM because there's no standard measurement. Good idea for video though 👍
Interesting. But you tested extremes. I get why you did it but...Would be better to see standard specs with different grinds, which is how most people buy clubs.
