I think Yakuza from an outsider's perspective is seen like a non-serious zany game where you beat the shit out of everyone. While not completely wrong people get the wrong idea due to memes and shit. The series is way more than just that and you do a great job of showing it. I'm surprised 0 isn't your favorite so I'm definitely looking forward to your analysis of the other 2 games to find out why. It's hard for me to pick a definitive favorite, but it has to be among 0 and 5 for the mainline and ishin and judgement for the spin-offs.
MAN. This is a masterpiece of a review, if you wanna call it that. The way you structured the video around the central themes of all the lieutenants and how it all ties back to Kiryu and Majima is nothing short of fucking genius. This is the kind of review I was looking for, for over a year now. It's really hard for me to explain, but I can see and feel the love you have for the game and presumably, the series. Y0 is my favorite game of all time, so I can PERFECTLY see what you were going for and I can tell you, you absolutely nailed it. The combat and boss fights further build upon the themes of the main antagonists, sometimes much more so than their actual cutscene appearances, like with Awano, so it's nice to actually see them being implemented into a review in such a spectacular and stylish, but raw way. It's EXACTLY how I imagined a review of this game, because you understand the fucking style these fights bring, how they can get your blood pumping using nothing but music and great fight choreography. I've NEVER, in my 20+ years of gaming felt something like this from another game, let alone series. Nothing but praise from me, man. While content like this, for a such a niche game may never really blow up, it's truly humbling to see someone have so much love for this series. I am absolutely looking forward to this trilogy of videos, I'll be watching with a close eye. Keep em' coming.

I love Yakuza 0! My first Yakuza game, and my favorite prequel. I’m playing the games chronologically and I’m on 3. After 3, I go for 4, 5, 6, Judgement, 7/Like a Dragon, and Lost Judgement.

I finally got around to watching this fine video to full my friend, and I gotta say you hit the nail on the head. I appreciate you talking about the serious plot, as not enough people do. Funny thing about Lao Gui is his chinese model looks so different. He looks like he's about to sell me discounted construction materials rather than kill me. I've heard this is because the Chinese actor usually plays that kind of role, but he just looks goofy to me.

Man, good new Yakuza content is what’s up. Yeah I agree. I only somewhat differ in that I think Kiwami 2 is not only an unnecessary addition to the duo of 0 and K1, but the engine/combat difference makes it a poor fit with the others. K2 is an incredible game though. I also think of K1 as an extension of Y0. It’s the second part of a two-part story. You can’t play as Majima but guess what, he’s everywhere. It’s a delight to face him in combat being intimately familiar with the moves he has in his arsenal in each style. You also get the greatest sense of how much Kamurocho has changed from 1988-2005 when you have the same engine and visual style. And of course, the Nishiki arc in 1 benefits SO much from the backstory in 0. It makes the games about him, Kiryu, and Kazama. By the end Kiryu has had an entire arc and rides off into the sunset to take care of his daughter in peace, and you really could end it there if you wanted (not complaining about the other incredible games that follow). At the end of 1, you can pretend Kiryu got to live a nice life; at the end of 2, you know he’s doomed to sort this shit out until the day he dies. Yakuza 0 is a strong contender for greatest game ever made. Pick an element and it knocks it out of the park. Gameplay? It has deep, well balanced, engrossing combat that is easy to pick up but is nuanced enough to take real work to master, plus tons of well constructed minigames of such variety that you’ll never get sick of them all. It has the absolutely perfect gameplay loop. Content? Lol get the fuck out of here, literally no game compares. Story? Great pacing, classic moments, top tier comedy and drama, and it stands alone well. Graphics? Not photorealistic but they WORK, they’re stylish, they’re crisp, and they run at 60fps. Look past a few quality of life quibbles and it’s just the complete package of a game that maxes out nearly every parameter and has something for everyone. There’s a reason it woke up millions to the brilliance of RGG.
The combat is really bad irresponsive clunky unnecessary unlockable moves it's basically a button Smasher. the stealth missions if you could even call it that are atrocious. plot has many holes the main protagonist has plot armor in game cutscenes don't match what happens in the story. the story Is about real estate and less to do with the main title of the game. Dude i love fighting games and play 90% only that genre but this game is also my favorite and agree with everything you said, i really enjoyed K2 for the way story scenes were directed, the romance and stuff but the gameplay was not really there for me even though i shit my pants when i saw that you could enter smile burger seamlessly and fight inside it. Y0 really for me who has only JRPG entusiasts asa friends is the best story in a game i have played for matters of separating - Lore - Story - Narrative - they are not the same but this game perfectly combined the 3.
To me this might be my favourite game ever or at least it's very near the tippy top of the list. The way it balances tone. How it is on one hand crazy macho bullshit but also a melodramatic tearjerker machine. The intersection of action-movie schlock and serious TV-drama. The OST, whether it's 80s parody music or rip and tear background tracks. The 80s setting in general. Awesome and funny minigames. Hilarious sidequests. Cool gameplay that is easy to settle into but still allowing a depthful and varied way of stylin' on your foes. Excellent voice-acting. There are a few funky story parts, but nothing that *really* lingers. The other big negative I can give is that the grind to get all skill points is way too... grindy. Sure, cookie-clicker + blueballin' bar girls management simulator are fun, the latter more than the former, but neither is fun enough for as long as they expect you to be. It's also just plain wrong to lock skills behind a minigame, even ones broken up with fighting sections.
Yeah, played 0-5 (don't own a PS4/5) and 0 is easily my favorite followed by 2, 5, 1, 4, then 3 at last place. 0 and 2 in particular are basically masterpieces of game development with 2 arguably having the best antagonist in the series and most emotional story. I still think 0 is number one though due to it's setting and gameplay though despite it having a worse story. The late 80's vibe was pulled off flawlessly but I do think that 2 has the best mini games as you can even play virtual fighter in it but 0 has bowling and pool so I guess they are VERY close I'd say overall. I'd give 0 a 9/10 and 2 an 8/10 and 1 a 7/10 personally and I've played 0-5 for probably a thousand hours combined lol.
I started this series on July 28 of 2021 with 0 because of a friend who liked Like a Dragon. I have beat the series as of February 2nd of this year, 2022. The last time I felt so Hollow, yet Satisfied was with the Souls series. Starting Lost/ Judgement for one more sight in Kamurocho.
Im currently on yakuza 3 after not enjoying k1 or k2 a lot, 0 was a true masterpiece, it reminded of dmc where the story is really deep under the surface but sadly most people only care about the funny stuff.
Made me cry multiple times shows that the world is Unfair and brutal and it will step on you until you cannot get up. but most importantly It's to be grateful for what i have the main character was an orphan with nothing to live for what so ever and was forced to become a gangster not caring a thing about his life if he dies he wouldn't even bat an eye
i've had 3 games that have effected me, tf2, hollowknight and yakuza 0, i don't regret a second playing these games especially yakuza 0 and i most definitely will be revisiting it often

Even the later games which do have a dub, which is honestly not bad, I prefer the original because it's the best version of the game's story and the performances are the best. So honestly I invite you to get through the minor inconvenience and experience the game as it is. You will not be dissapointed, my friend.
Amazing! Watching this video reminds me of how elaborate Yakuza 0 is. It is such an exhilarating series with an exceptional storyline that you struggle to find these day's in games. Yakuza 0's themes are conveyed well through the antagonists of the game. This prequel is great in setting the tone of the unforgiving Yakuza. Another insightful video, thank you for the content. Now I understand this video might be a bit confusing structurally, but this is because this is the first out of three essays, illustrating why I think Yakuza 0, Kiwami and Kiwami 2 make a perfect trilogy. Hated Kiwami 2. The story was fine, but I hated what they did with the fighting system, as well as the difficulty and healing items. Yakuza 0 had rings to make it hard and Kiwami 1 was hard, but in Kiwami 2 they made everything to easy, and changed the 20-item limit, which turned the game into a complete joke. It didn't even have an opening movie, what a horrible thing to do. I think many people complained about Kiwami 1 being too hard, so they fixed it in 2. Kiwami 1 also ends on a very good note, he walks off and saves the girl, no need for part 2. I also don't care for the Dragon Engine, it made everything feel stiff and slower, because it runs at 30fps, when part 1 and 0 are 60fps.
A few notes: - I agree with you on the difficulty, but having recently played K2 for footage, I think the combat is really fun if you try and beat the game without healing items. - Check out my Kiwami 2 best Game Ever video, I think it'd change your mind about some things

The plot is ridiculous and it has many plot holes for example how did the main character lose the blind girl? how many Times does the main character kill people in gameplay but the game doesn't recognize this? or When in the end kyrio says he doesn't have money even though he has a business?

Sorry, but that was sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo long :( I have "Tried" MANY times to play at least one Yakuza game & the fact I own several of them would make anyone think I have played at least one of them, but EVERY time I want to play one I have to go online, search & find out WHICH damn one to play first (ANY non-Asian game would generally make it a bit more obvious like 1, 2, 3, etc, so then WTF is "0" supposed to mean!?!?) & by the time Ive found a video to explain which one is best played first, Ive completely lost interest again! I wanted to play one now & it will probably not happen again! :(
Umm, okay? Generally speaking 0 just means it's a prequel. With Yakuza specifically It's a simple start with 0, then Kiwami 1 (the remake of the original PS2 Yakuza 1) then Kiwami 2 (the remake of 2) then 3 and so forth. As for how long the video is, 28 minutes is actually kind of short for a video essay.

0 and 2 in particular are basically masterpieces of game development with 2 arguably having the best antagonist in the series and most emotional story.
I still think 0 is number one though due to it's setting and gameplay though despite it having a worse story. The late 80's vibe was pulled off flawlessly but I do think that 2 has the best mini games as you can even play virtual fighter in it but 0 has bowling and pool so I guess they are VERY close I'd say overall.
I'd give 0 a 9/10 and 2 an 8/10 and 1 a 7/10 personally and I've played 0-5 for probably a thousand hours combined lol.

I started this series on July 28 of 2021 with 0 because of a friend who liked Like a Dragon. I have beat the series as of February 2nd of this year, 2022. The last time I felt so Hollow, yet Satisfied was with the Souls series. Starting Lost/ Judgement for one more sight in Kamurocho.
I couldn't describe the feeling better myself. Hopefully I'll finally beat DS1 myself this year :D

Both the yakuza series and the from software game series are absolute gems in gaming
Im currently on yakuza 3 after not enjoying k1 or k2 a lot, 0 was a true masterpiece, it reminded of dmc where the story is really deep under the surface but sadly most people only care about the funny stuff.
Made me cry multiple times shows that the world is Unfair and brutal and it will step on you until you cannot get up. but most importantly It's to be grateful for what i have the main character was an orphan with nothing to live for what so ever and was forced to become a gangster not caring a thing about his life if he dies he wouldn't even bat an eye
i've had 3 games that have effected me, tf2, hollowknight and yakuza 0, i don't regret a second playing these games especially yakuza 0 and i most definitely will be revisiting it often

Yeah, this got a follow. Yakuza 0 is my favorite game, and you nailed everything I loved on the head. Holy hell, I love this video. Funny thing is, I’m on my 5th play through. I’m beating it on Legend mode

@@chuck176 An English dub would be detrimental to the amazing acting done by the people who voice the characters. Even the later games which do have a dub, which is honestly not bad, I prefer the original because it's the best version of the game's story and the performances are the best. So honestly I invite you to get through the minor inconvenience and experience the game as it is. You will not be dissapointed, my friend.
Amazing! Watching this video reminds me of how elaborate Yakuza 0 is. It is such an exhilarating series with an exceptional storyline that you struggle to find these day's in games. Yakuza 0's themes are conveyed well through the antagonists of the game. This prequel is great in setting the tone of the unforgiving Yakuza. Another insightful video, thank you for the content. I will definitely watch the Kiwami 2 video soon.

Oh yeah if you watch my Kiwami video I pretty much say outright it's my favorite story in the series (although in recent years Yakuza 6 and Lost Judgment have gotten close). Also, thank you for the kind words, it means a lot!

The ending of Yakuza 0 is the only game to ever make me cry
WHAT ABOUT K1, 6 AND 7 HMM?
Hated Kiwami 2. The story was fine, but I hated what they did with the fighting system, as well as the difficulty and healing items. Yakuza 0 had rings to make it hard and Kiwami 1 was hard, but in Kiwami 2 they made everything to easy, and changed the 20-item limit, which turned the game into a complete joke. It didn't even have an opening movie, what a horrible thing to do. I think many people complained about Kiwami 1 being too hard, so they fixed it in 2. Kiwami 1 also ends on a very good note, he walks off and saves the girl, no need for part 2. I also don't care for the Dragon Engine, it made everything feel stiff and slower, because it runs at 30fps, when part 1 and 0 are 60fps.
A few notes:
- I agree with you on the difficulty, but having recently played K2 for footage, I think the combat is really fun if you try and beat the game without healing items.
- Check out my Kiwami 2 best Game Ever video, I think it'd change your mind about some things

The plot is ridiculous and it has many plot holes for example how did the main character lose the blind girl? how many Times does the main character kill people in gameplay but the game doesn't recognize this? or When in the end kyrio says he doesn't have money even though he has a business?

Sorry, but that was sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo long :( I have "Tried" MANY times to play at least one Yakuza game & the fact I own several of them would make anyone think I have played at least one of them, but EVERY time I want to play one I have to go online, search & find out WHICH damn one to play first (ANY non-Asian game would generally make it a bit more obvious like 1, 2, 3, etc, so then WTF is "0" supposed to mean!?!?) & by the time Ive found a video to explain which one is best played first, Ive completely lost interest again! I wanted to play one now & it will probably not happen again! :(
Umm, okay? Generally speaking 0 just means it's a prequel. With Yakuza specifically It's a simple start with 0, then Kiwami 1 (the remake of the original PS2 Yakuza 1) then Kiwami 2 (the remake of 2) then 3 and so forth. As for how long the video is, 28 minutes is actually kind of short for a video essay.
Yakuza 3-5 was horrible it went downhill Y0 is the BEST!!!
