"How are you? - I am Turk" Sounds like a missunderstanding of the initial question, but is a clever reference to Atatürk's "Ne Mutlu Türküm Diyene" quote meaning the man is actually happy (mutlu). "I am Turk" can also convey a state of deep inner depression engendered by the physical and intellectual existence within the boundaries of growingly divided country driving towards a hopeless future while being painfully aware of the continued slippage from democracy to autocracy. Either way, a profound answer

As a Turkish citizen and nationalist, It's really concerning to see that this is the reality. Most people in here can only have simple conversations, not further than "What's your name?" or "How old are you" etc. English is the key to contact people around the world seamlessly, and learning it is such important.
As an American military member serving in Türkiye, I will admit that we were living within an artificially created American environment among the Turkish people. We had our military club on the military bases and stores on the military bases for buying food and clothing. I went exploring around the Turkish cities, and I encountered Turkish people who could speak English. They introduced me to others who spoke English until eventually I met the lady who became my wife. It is completely due to my own laziness that I am not fluent with the Turkish language by now. I should have immersed myself completely in the language and the culture for a year without anyone giving me assistance in English.
This is a huge factor holding Turkey back. I lived in Ankara for about 3 and a half years. It is hard to overstate how much this affects the competitiveness of the country. I have witnessed so many misunderstandings and missed connections at conferences, exhibitions, and other international events. It is very frustrating. Yes. The language is fundamentally challenging for a native Turkish speaker to learn. But other peoples around the world, including Turkic ones, have managed it. I found it much easier to have English conversations in Baku or with people from Central Asia than people in Turkey. It is possible to reach this level, but it takes serious investment. My wife (from Turkey) was shocked when we were in a small village in rural Oman and people there spoke English well. This wasn't a place with tons of resources, but they did teach English early. Another issue is that many Turkish people are unwilling to to pay the wages to bring proper English teachers to their classrooms. There was a place that offered English classes near me in Ankara and most of the teachers were from Kenya and Nigeria. I would sometimes talk to these teachers when I saw them in the park or around the neighborhood, and it was often hard for me as a native English speaker (with experience around the world) to understand the teachers. I also would see people from Arab countries and only mediocre English skills tutoring giving classes in Turkey. I have no ill will towards these teachers, but I have seen these cases a few times, and not seen effective results from them. Teaching effectively doesn't just happen accidentally because someone speaks English. It takes intention to make a program that works.
This is primarily the responsibility of the government educational system, in addition to the process of dubbing all films, programs and computer systems. The Turkish person does not hear any foreign voice at all, in fact, to the point that if you spoke very slightly different Turkish or if you pronounced some letters differently, they would not understand at all.
Actually mostly people's are not interested in English (İngilizce) but the few youngest generation are interested mostly the girls are interested to learn English...🙂🖖
I don’t think it’s sad lol; not everything revolves around the Western world and language is deeply rooted in culture. The benefit to learning English is, as you mentioned, the fact that many countries speak it… but if we’re going by population size Mandarin, Hindi, or Spanish could all also be quite useful. It depends on your goals🤷🏻♀️ Also anyone who is an English-speaking tourist should not expect the world to bend over backwards to accommodate them, language included.
I hope to find a Turk friend who I can learn Turkish from her and she can learn English from me, because I live in Turkiye and I’m trying my best to learn the language. Speaking is most difficult topic for me, Even though I’m about to finish The TÖMER course.

I saw you in a comment and you were ranting about Turks. When Turks came to Anatolia, they did not lose their language or culture. When they came to Anatolia, they used some Persian words. And they still did not lose their language and continued to speak Turkish. They shared their culture with the people in the lands they conquered, and those who claimed Turkish culture as their own ahaha LoL.
And you wrote that Turks can never become Europeans, which is very funny. No one claims to be European, on the contrary, 8 out of 10 people you see on the road define themselves as "Eurasian". And you should know that there are many people in Turkey who carry European genes. Because the Ottoman Empire.

I would say it's important to know languages other than your home nation but not necessarily English. English is a good bridge language because many countries learn it and it can be very useful in certain situation abroad. The problem is English people dont learn many languages because they know everyone knows or is learning English ha ha so it's also bad. If you visit any county you should try to know it's language in basic form. Just good manners. I wouldn't go to Türkiye and just speak English everywhere 😂 I would make an effort to speak the countries language!
The girl at 1:08 is not Turkish - she’s Black, African origin. The Turkic ethnicity has no Black race in it. This video doesn't represent us correctly.
If I have to say that little importance is given to foreign languages in Turkiye. And people see this as something unnecessary. It is just like "why should I learn English? Am I British?🙄🙂" This is some nonsense. Because English is a universal language but if he doesn't need it, he won't learn it. But one of the reasons why Turks do not know many languages in Turkiye. Turkiye is a country that has not been colonized or imposed rules on these issues.
This is the real me trying to communicate with Turkish, thank God, i have my hands intact because what would i be demonstrating with in times word scarcity 😂. İ remember one day being asked: 'ismin ne?' and i immediately respinded: 'iyiyim, teşekkür ederim'😂. Language barrier is real here in Turkey though🤭
This is depends of which part of the city you go , it's gonna change of course ;) we don't see in America speaking many language. Turks doing better . People , speak also German , French . In USA you can not see that , atlist if your background coming from any language they are speaking
There are a few reasons: - The language education system, like that of many other countries, is terrible. Even many English teachers struggle to talk well. - Turkey was never colonized, hence there is no history of foreign language supremacy. (Some may argue that the French (19th century) and American culture (second half of the twentieth century) had a colonizing effect, although this was limited to the "educated" people and elites. And it had a more stylistic influence, because most of these people are also bad in English.) - The Turkish language is very dominant in every field of life - The modern Lingua Franca is unrelated to the Turkish language. They are not from the same family. The syntax of English and Turkish are almost completely opposite. In English, sentences are written in reverse (from a Turkish perspective). If the Azerbaijani, Uzbek or even Farsi language would be the current Lingua Franca, Turks would speak it effortlessly.

@subhyabenkhalil2297 Yes you are right but Morocco was under control of those countries in history (the ones that you said), that's why their languages are still spoken in Morocco. In case for Turkey, we only speak Turkish since our official language is only Turkish and it's really hard to learn another language especially from Indo-European or Semi (Arabic, Hebrew, etc) due to the differences of Turkish comparing to these languages.

I’ll never understand why these asking people what languages they speak, questions always take place on the streets of the most central touristy Capital Cities. If you want a realistic idea of the population of a country and who speaks English, or whatever you need to go to small towns and ask people locals born and lived there, all the life that will actually get realistic results.

Well, in a way it's good to see the Turks aren't being colonized through the english language, keep up the good work guys. p.s. the english pronunciation keeps the tongue tied, what's with the "th" sound
In fact, if we look at our past, this is, in a way, the reason why people do not speak much English. Language or any rules were not imposed on the Turks. Or not colonized

I went many times in Türkiye and most of Turkish people don't speak English. That's very sad unfortunately
Yes especially in some certain situations where you need to speak to one of them it’s impossible.
It depends on your goals🤷🏻♀️
Also anyone who is an English-speaking tourist should not expect the world to bend over backwards to accommodate them, language included.

You are right!! Thanks for sharing!

Great video ❤
Glad you liked it!!
cause i could not make any decision about this
There are a few reasons:
- The language education system, like that of many other countries, is terrible. Even many English teachers struggle to talk well.
- Turkey was never colonized, hence there is no history of foreign language supremacy. (Some may argue that the French (19th century) and American culture (second half of the twentieth century) had a colonizing effect, although this was limited to the "educated" people and elites. And it had a more stylistic influence, because most of these people are also bad in English.)
- The Turkish language is very dominant in every field of life
- The modern Lingua Franca is unrelated to the Turkish language. They are not from the same family. The syntax of English and Turkish are almost completely opposite.
In English, sentences are written in reverse (from a Turkish perspective).
If the Azerbaijani, Uzbek or even Farsi language would be the current Lingua Franca, Turks would speak it effortlessly.
thanks for explanation!!
I went to Marmaris and didn’t meet any Turkish person who didn’t speak English

I can say that foreign languages are not given much importance in Turkey's education system. That's why there are very few people who speak English.
👏👏👏
No one speak English in Turkey or any foreign language
I went to Morocco and everybody there speak multiple languages such as English french and Spanish
It's not right to say no one speaks. Yes, most of the Turk's cant speak english, but the young part is actually very good. Besides, Turkish is different than other Europe languages. So it's normal that most of the Turkish people find it hard.

People in most of the villages are ignorant. Think of it this way, a European villager is only interested in agriculture and has no time.
Good point!
