    What a fun video concept! I have some many books where I definitely teeter on like two different ratings and tend to go to the more generous one

      I feeeeeel that SO much!!!! I struggle so much to justify my ratings sometimes because I go by feeling so much, its like that 5 star feel/4 star feel/etc...

    Sooo relatable!! I’ve often had to go back and change my rating because with time a book either settles in or skips on out of my head.

      ME too, I am really realizing this as well!!! I think it just means so much when a book will really stick out in our memory, that's a real 5 star there! 🙌📚💯

    oh man, there's definitely some 5 stars I look back and change my mind on lol. TBH fair on The Death I Gave Him & Vampires of El Norte, even though I really liked both of them 😂

    As you were counting down the star ratings, I chuckled at you or someone else saying, "I gave this book 1 star last year, but now I'm retroactively DNFing."
    I ought to do this with some of my books. I've reevaluated and lowered or raised star ratings before, but there are some 4-star and 5-star books that I barely remember from 2023 too.

    • @mikalareads

      HAHAH YESSS I lOVE that!!!!! Thats the biggest lesson I learned from last year is that I wasted so much time on books that I ended up strongly disliking and getting no value from, and Ill never get that time back! SO now I just am getting myself to not even finish these kinds of books and hopefully move on to something better!👏📚💖 YESSS okay thats exactly how I am too about many of my reads from last year is they just don't have that lasting power in my memory!

    What is up with all the computer romances?!? Also lol at The Death I Gave him being billed as having a queer romance when one of the love interests isn’t even a human being.
    I go back through my ratings at the end of the year and I always end up reevalauting books and rating them lower than I did the first time round. I think it’s so easy to get caught up in the excitement of a new story and think it’s amazing. It’s only a few months later when you look back and realise you don’t remember a book AT ALL that you realise how average it really was.

    • @mikalareads
      @mikalareads  4 месяца назад

      HAHHAHA the term computer romance is so accurate for that book but also just makes me LOL, because I cant believe it is a thing!!!
      And that is SO true I agree how you can look back and see how average a book was based on if it has stuck in your memory at all!!! I am currently trying as well to think and ask myself what makes a book memorable and what doesn't!

    This is something I do at least once a year! Usually it's for really lower ratings, like 2 or 3 stars, because I'm usually fine with leaving a high score if I had a good reading experience with a book as opposed to the actual book content irritating me. Sometimes if I finish a series, I'll look back and recalibrate some ratings.
    I think the only times I made a drastic rating change was for A Court of Wings and Ruin by SJM (which I dropped from a 5 to a 3 a year later because it didn't stick with me well and the novella made me angry) and then when I reread some childhood fairy tale favorites by Robin McKinley (she has two versions of Beauty & the Beast, which I thought of as a 3 and a 5, but I swapped preferences as an adult).

    • @mikalareads
      @mikalareads  4 месяца назад +1

      OMG I read and adored one of Robin McKinley Beauty & the Beast retellings I read when I was young! I want to say it was called "Beauty", I have such vivid memories of reading this one and taking it with me to class every day, I still think about it! I am worried to reread many of my old favorites for fear they may not hold up!
      But I love how you will re-evaluate your rating at least once a year!!! I definitely want to do this more often, I think it is even making me reevaluate my ratings in the moment a bit more too!!!

    Okay so I keep getting notified on Libby that Chlorine is available and I just keep not starting it. I really think that, through YOU actually, that magical realism is not at all for me. I think one day I might get to it but I'm glad you mentioned this book here because I'm just gonna go ahead and let go of wanting to read it at this point!
    Lmao 😂dying at the fact that the publishers have marketed The Death I Gave Him as a queer romance when it's actually a computer. I love the way you call silly things out like that hahaha

    • @mikalareads
      @mikalareads  4 месяца назад

      YES okay 1000% I understand that totally! I think too since you are not the biggest fan of magical realism Chlorine may not be an enjoyable reading experience because it can get heavy with the magical realism!!! I think it's okay to let this one go and don't give it a second more of your time! I have this happen to me SO often where libby starts getting to the point where it stresses me out because when it notifies me a book is available I feel like I have to read it and I just keep putting it off and Im starting to let myself off the hook and just return the book back even if it will put me at the end of the line again! Its helping me make reading feel more fun again and less like a chore!
      HAHAHH The Death I Gave Him just was the most STRANGE reading experience with that!!!!!!!!!!!

    This was interesting to watch. I've looked at past ratings of books I've read and would change a few too. I agree with you on all the books I've read: the London seance society, she started it, silver nitrate. ❤

      Its so interesting to take a look back at past ratings and just review if they still hold up!!! Some of them I can see the head space I was in at the time and why I rated them one way, but definitely with some time away from them I think the rose colored glasses wore off on a few hahah! 😅😅😅

    3:47 this is my sign to lower my rating of Ripe from 5 to 4! I have been thinking about lowering it for a while. I just didn't have the emotional connection to that book like I thought I did.

      @mikalareads  4 месяца назад

      YESSS I feel this way too about that one, and a lot of books that I have lowered my rating on! Like on the surface they may have had all the things I loved but are just lacking that connection that makes it a 5!!! Thats a great point!

  • @books-on-a-wire

    The more I read, it feels like it's harder to reach that 5-star pinnacle. I've read 15 this month and there was only one 5-star, ONE!! And it wasn't even a book I own, which tells me I buy way too many "just okay" books. 😂 I think if I went back on my Goodreads, I could lower so many books because I've forgotten the details, that's just a pitfall of reading so many books a year, the mediocre just don't stick.

    • @mikalareads
      @mikalareads  4 месяца назад

      YESSSSSSSSSS omg Everything you said here is SPOT ON! 🎯 I agree fully that when we read so many books a year it is SO telling the few that standout strongly in our memory that those were really something special! (ALthough some of my lowest rated have also really stuck in my head so maybe its like the two extremes are the MOST memorable hahah!)
      I totally know what you mean too about it getting harder to find 5 star books! At the end of last year I was getting so burnt out on what I was reading, everything was feeling like the same thing, and I just was not finding as many impactful reads! Lately I have been shifting a bit in the genres I have been picking up so everything has been feeling a bit new where I have been finding some books I was very excited with again!

    I am constantly re-evaluating my 5 star reads. For me the rating reflexes my initial enjoyment of the book and if on a later date I still think about it with the same affection, than this could truly stay a 5 stars 🌟🌟🌟 otherwise I down on the rating. It also works the other way around; there are books that with time feel like they should be more appreciated, that is how I feel about Lapvona. 🐑 Strange Sally Diamond is my biggest disappointment so far this year, I hated it so much 😠I may lower my ratings /gave it 3 stars/ just because I still feel irritated by it. Love your T-shirt ❤‍🔥❤‍🔥❤‍🔥

      @mikalareads  4 месяца назад +1

      YESS okay I absolutely LOVE what you said about how you rate books and what a 5 star is to you and if you still have the same level of affection for a book then you KNOW it is a 5 star! I relate to this so much and I am really going to go in and re-evaluate my ratings more often!!!
      ALSO YESsss I have also had it happen the other way around as well, where initially I rated it lower but could not stop thinking about it and so I raised my ratings! These are more rare but it definitely tells me there is something in that book worth appreciating!!
      OKAY I am so glad I was not along in my feelings about Strange Sally Diamond, I really hated it so much, it made me feel sick, especially the way it ended just upset me so much!
      Thank you so much Maya!!!💗💖🥰📚

    I don't like giving star ratings myself. I do it when I have to, but I try not to. What matters to me are the answers to these 3 questions
    1. Did I finish the book?
    2. Did I enjoy the book?
    3. Would I read the book again?
    If I answer yes to all 3, the book is a real winner. Happy reading, everyone. 😊
