  • Join me as I photograph an evening match of grass roots football under flickering LED floodlights in the away game league match between Pershore Town Football Club vs Newent Town Association Football Club in the Hellenic League Division 1
To photograph football under floodlights that are flickering when using the Canon 1DX Mark 2 and or the Canon 7d Mark 2 with the anti-flicker option set, follow these steps:
1: Set the camera to manual mode (M) and select a high shutter speed to freeze the action, such as 1/1000 sec or higher.
2: Adjust the aperture to create a shallow depth of field and isolate the subject, such as f/2.8 or wider.
3: ISO can be set to a high value such as 1600 or higher, depending on the lighting conditions, to compensate for the low light. Dont be afraid to shoot in auto ISO and use noise reduction in post production
4: Turn on the anti-flicker option in the camera menu to reduce flickering caused by artificial light sources.
    Canon 1DXii: RED MENU - SECTION 3 - OPTION 7
    Canon 7Dii: RED MENU - SECTION 4 - OPTION 4
5: Focus on the subject using continuous autofocus for fast running players, or depending on the situation switch to on shot AF-S for photos of the fans and managers.
6: Take a test shot and adjust the settings as needed.
Continuously shoot, making adjustments as necessary, to capture the best moments of the game.
Note: It's important to monitor the image quality regularly and adjust the settings as needed to ensure optimal results.

I shoot American youth football for my son's team and I struggle big time with noisy images. I'm shooting on a Panasonic GH4 with a Lumix 100-300 mm lens. My settings are usually 2.8, 1/100 sec, 10000-12500 ISO. So frustrating! Thanks for the video.

You may wish to consider, if you havent already introducing some noise control software into your work flow. Topaz denoise/ai photo has some decent batch edit ability so worth a look at, especially if you have some really good images you would like to try and sell on etc. Other than that, all I can offer is to try and shoot as close to the action as possible and in areas where there is maximum light available to your camera.

Nice shots despite the poor lighting, Geoff.

Thanks Bruce. - I have a new camera on the way, so hopefully that means some new videos too.

Do you think that shooting in similar conditions with sony 70-350 4.5-6.3 could give satisfying results. I shoot mainly aroung 1/800-1/1000. I may have a possibility in a couple days and i do t know ;)

To be honest, it's difficult to say what is acceptable to you might not be to me, etc. Also you didnt state the camera you are using, 😀 still, sony sensors typically fair better in low light compared to say canon sensors pre pro mirrorless bodies, but your apature at the widest is only f4 which will really hold ypu back and especially as you increase your focal length out to 350mm. At grassroots pitches , the flood lighting is a huge challenge. With my kit and shooting at 2.8 across the full focal range, I really struggle still with consistent focus and acceptable image quality as the contrast and lack of light is the problem for the focusing system and noise from the signal gain applied to sensor regardless of brand.
Still with all of the above said, you can improve your chances of getting better quality in your captured by shooting the action when it's closer to you and whilst play happens under the peak of the floodlight brightness on pitch near to you, also look for shots from the fans and managers where your shutter speed can be much slower around 200/250th which will allow much brighter and cleaner images to be captured.
I hope that helps, and I'd love to see your images and results if you can share them
      Regards
      Geoff

@@FreeLensImage your welcome, looking forward to reading how you get on. Already checked your channel out :)
I see the ZV-E10 is a very capable APS-C ML body - Im quite tempted on buying the Canon R3 .... but that might be silly considering I earn nothing from photography lol
