4.5 MILES HIGH WITH A 2000ft SEPARATION

- Click-baiters or a dumb Journo would probably headline this something like ‘Are our skies becoming unsafe! Look at these two planes nearly colliding’! And probably somehow relate it back to a door blowing off a 737 🤷🏼♂️
But in reality, this is nothing to be concerned about. These two aircraft, a Finnair A321 and Iberia A321 are separated by 2000ft. The regulations clearly state ‘minimum vertical separation for IFR (Instrument Flight Rules) is 1000 ft (300 m) below FL290 (29,000ft) and 2000 ft (600 m) above FL290’.
Both jets (IB3148 and AY1672)were above 29,000ft with the ‘one on top’ being the Finnair jet at 34,000ft. So IFR is clearly being observed.
So next time you look up and see this, it’s merely an optical illusion that they look so close.
Nothing to see here, scroll on..,
Great capture there. Back in the 90s Reduced Vertical Separation Minima (RVSM) was introduced and gradually adopted throughout the world. 1000ft vertical separation is now used up to FL410 so in this instance there was twice the required separation between the aircraft. As they were both flying in the same direction they would likely have been allocated levels 2000ft apart, FL320 and FL340 in this instance. Aircraft flying in the opposite direction would be allocated FL310, FL330, FL350 etc.
Considering the size of the sky's, being those close still seems like an unnecessary risk, especially if there was a mismatch in size between aircraft (e.g. an A380 and a business jet).
I think 4,000 ft should be the minimum
I worked on the RVSM program for EuroControl back in the 90s, specifying some of the equipment used for establishing that the altimetry systems were up to the job, ground-based radar not being quite adequate. Fun times travelling around Europe!
@@aw4968 1000ft separation is a tried and trusted standard that has proven perfectly safe for many years. Even RVSM has been around for nearly 30 years now. Altimeters are incredibly accurate at recording the pressure gradient. Increasing vertical separation minima would reduce the amount of usable airspace available and there's no way ATC systems could handle anything like the amount of traffic we see today.
@@davee9506 I remember the transition period. Having to route aircraft over various monitoring waypoints to ensure compliance with the more stringent requirements. Also, the introduction of RVSM airspace was done in stages. Oceanic airspace came first as the air is generally 'smoother' over oceans. For a while there was an arbitrary line down the middle of Scotland where RVSM could be used to the west of it, non-RVSM to the east. Occasionally we would vector aircraft to the west of the line just so we could use 1000ft vertical separation rather than climbing or descending one of the aircraft. We obviously had to know that both aircraft were RVSM compliant, which was marked on the flight progress strip. It became a lot more straight forward when the whole airspace became RVSM and compliance was mandated for civil aircraft. Those extra usable flight levels came in very useful when the traffic levels began to increase.
What a great capture. Imagine the view for the crews.
Love "American" Jerry lol OMG !🤣
American Jerry wants to speak to your manager 😆
Amazing catch Jerry . Shall we call that a Super Funky Shot. This is why we love man.😊
Click bait? I clicked! Great shot
Sometimes in life, you're in the right place at the right time . Brilliant filming. Top job Jerry. [camera operator] edited by Gilly [gallery director]....lol
If there is 2000 feet between the two planes. Will the passengers feel turbulence from each other? Great shot Jerry.✈️✈️
😮 👀 😮
Wow jerry bigjet forever ✈️♥️♥️
That was incredible Jerry ! Well done for filming it
I saw that live. They were so close on FR24 but obviously separated in reality.
Probably the best "funky shot's" I've seen you capture! Awesome! 🎥✈️👍
Amazing shot Jerry another fantastic capture by u
I grew up here in south central Kansas, and we seem to be a great place for training in-air refueling. I've seen it happen quite a few times. It's pretty cool.
And people worry about satellites colliding when there's more space, more altitudes, and similar numbers to planes in the sky on any given day. Great capture Jerry, kinda mad they are the same plane, so far apart, but look almost the same size despite their distance from each other.
Brilliant footage!
It's the best funky shot ever!
Definitely a Funky shot🎉
Jerry you're hilarious 😂
*"Quickly make the click bait out of it"*
😂😂
It’s pure magic watching this aviation is so special ❤
Now that’s something you don’t see everyday
Oh my gahhhhh! That's next-level Flippin Heck 😂
Nice catch Jerry, I missed it on live.
Wonder if the pilots spoke to each other ?
DRS for aircraft.
A great capture....and tremendous mockery of the world we live in...😅
Great footage!
I love it !!! Nice catch!😊✈️✈️
Beautiful!
Wow great capture Jerry 😀
Second best eclipse of the year.
What a film, gee whizz American Jerry, good one !
Great capture just before the clouds.
Absolutely incredible
Amazing shot
I swear I thought those two planes were doing something questionable 🤣 glad I clicked on the link hahaha
Amazing shot Jerry ❤️❤️❤️
Had this Was on a 767 at 34 k feet When a 350 came past us no more than a Mile apart Both going the Same way /Awesome to See
Amazing Capture! Awesome! 💯💯💯
Haha so right about the headlines. Actually I wouldn't put it past the Daily Fail to actually run it as a 'near collision' story now with this video 🤣
This was a real good one to get !
Go you Jerry
Will I see you in Monte Carlo at the weekend ?
Second last corner yeah 😜
So cool!!!
Would that be rare to see ? That was awesome
That’s nuts right there
Wow.
Hi...I'll be landing an A350 (CX239) in LHR tomorrow afternoon (22 May 24)...any chance you'll be recording landings? Would greatly appreciate the chance to show my future grandkids what I used to do for kicks!
That happened over my house once, I almost hyperventilated 😅
Evidently these two pilots knew precisely that Jerry was below them and just wanted to show off!
It was a near total eclipse
awesome!
Very good camera
No question that the pilots in the plane catching up to the first would have seen it but knew there was no need to change their course.
Looks awesome - the rear plane must have had such a great view
Perspective can play weird tricks. I saw a plane almost crash into the moon yesterday!
😅 Telling it like it is lol.
Jerry did you hear about SG321 emergency landing in BKK! Very sad!
Hahaha your commentary 😂
Superb shot
Far funky shot!
Wow ❤
That was a great catch!
Nature's birds chirpin....man's birds flying high
So true… perspective is such a fickle thang!
What is this an air show. 😂😂😂 Cool video!!
I saw two Ryanair's flying 1000ft above each other
Very cool
Amazing
Hello BIG JET TV.
In the blue sky,two aeroplanes quickly mate,
Great footage and commentary 😂
Wow 🙄🥱
WOW
I wonder if they did an ‘airdrop’ photo share 😂
excellent.
Nice
If these hit turbulence like sq321😮
OMG!
So cool! Actually a rather beautiful moment I reckon.
TECHNOLOGY
PMSL
Superb
Oh maa gaaaad
RVSM allows 1000 ft vertical separation. Look out!
Right let's see how my aircraft ID is progressing? The higher one looks to me to be a Airbus A330-300 or A350-900 as I'm sure I can make out the sharklets, the lower one looks to be a Lufthansa going on the tail wrap, cannit see any pronounced sharklets/winglets so guessing a Boeing 787-8/9? Didn't see it live so if anyone did and know how close am I or do I need to go back to aviation ID school and study more 😂.
Pretty mad and very awesome 👌
I thought the minimum safe distance was 2km.
Vertical separation is 1000ft at lower altitudes and generally 2000ft at higher. Horizontal separation (same altitude) varies but is generally 5 miles.
Was a great video untill about 0:38
Lol
700 meters. 500 are required. Enough. Besides that they know where the other one is ( TECAS ).
😂😂
Oh my GAAAAAAAHHHDDDD!!!
Clickbait worked, nice one Jerry 🤣👊
There are airways between Europe and South America that are unidirectional and the seperation is 1000 feet. How close must that look!?
Daily mail in the morning “Boeing planes in near miss in UK airspace”
“Boeing planes full of cancer-causing illegal immigrants in near miss in UK airspace”!
It’s about 2KM if it’s horizontal separation I think
Horizontal separation varies according to surveillance factors but in this case would have likely been five nautical miles. They were of course nowhere near that far apart horizontally but were separated vertically instead.
When you are using any sort of zoom, the scene will be compressed and make objects like these aircraft seem closer together. So, yes, click bait it is.
Really dangerous. Hope whoever authorised that from ATC was fired.
😂🤣😂 Sure, ok, fraidy cat.
Not dangerous at all, RVSM has been about for many years
❤.
又不是飞碟,你那么激动干什么?
