Spoke to a guy in Rotterdam today on 40m for 30mins whilst sitting in my local Tesco carpark. 5/9 both ways. They might be cheap (and they might not work for everyone) but I love them.
I run a 10m ham stick on a fender mount. It just flat out works. Parked, driving, doesn't matter. Best 30 dollars I ever spent. I do need to grab a 12m at some point as well.
Tim, just wanted to say that I enjoyed the video. Like you, I too have the FT-891 which I think is a great radio. Also, I'm a big fan of using Hamsticks although I've yet to try 10 meters but will more than likely add one. While I don't do POTA or any other activations, I do like the idea of being portable and work contacts from the shack and backyard using 20 meter Hamsticks configured in a dipole setup. Any way, keep up the good work as I look forward to watching your informative videos.
The 10 m ampro seems to work well Tim. I use them on 17,20 and recently tried the 40 metre working into New Zealand 5/7 report with my 100w mobile . I mount them in the centre of the car roof with a modified tri-mag 73 G0RZV.
A great vid Tim. I use Ampro for 20m and 40m. However, I use a base helical, cb antenna for 10m, Puerto Rico in the log on 20w. Happy days. Great to get you in the log the other day. All the best, 73
Interesting video Tim. Just come across your channel. Just bought the Yaesu 991a. And still finding my feet. Been on repeaters for about 3 yrs. Need to spread my waves a little further now. Cheers M7AHE
Great results Tim. I was talking to my 145live buddy (G1GRD) just on the way home from work this evening and we mentioned going up to our high spot and trying a bit of 10m. I planned to throw up a 5/8 silver rod on a tripod and see how we got on with my measly 10w 🤣. Great to see you out and about, keep them coming. 73
Magic Tim. 10m is a band for all, not just the big guns. Your clear take off will help no end. Eventually I want to make an A/B comparison between the tank whip and the Moxon. Max Mountain World did this and the difference was incredible(multiple s points), not what the modeling suggests. 12m is also a great band and made some great west coast contacts at greyline.
Happy Thanksgiving Tim! I'm really grateful for everything that you've taught me and him radio and truly appreciate your experience and willingness to share. When do you normally get on 10 m is it in the morning in the evenings what seems to work best for you
Keep the vids coming Tim! Use ampro a lot when static mobile and the dx slider with whip when im on the beach, getting a tad chilly for that up north though! de 2e0tmm
thanks for the video tim, nice to see you enjoying 10m. still nothing on 10m here, but 80m and 40m long haul dx to the uk from zl is going quite well. best wishes : brian zl3xdj.

Whist admittedly I haven't tried the Ampro 10m stick, I have tried the 40m and 20m one and actually found the Atas120a worked better! My Atas works fine on 10m, it would be interesting to compare the two.
@@timg5tm941 Well I guess they are all loaded 1/4 waves, so it must come down to design and efficiency of the coil I guess? I wouldn't claim to know :) But whilst I can't tell much difference on receive, I do get better reports on TX. If you were closer, you could borrow it!
Great video Tim , 10 m has been good recently the ampro are great antennas I don’t understand why more don’t use them , like you say full size quarter wave on 10m , I use 2 as a halfwave at home on a 33 ft mast I can rotate it’s surprising how directional they are as a rotable dipole , I have worked many countries using this antenna and 50w , cheers de 2e0nbk
Hi Tim, Totally agree on the "bang for buck" of the Ham Sticks.. That's a great run on 28Meg... I must actually start doing more on 10m.... Its a band I never really use to be honest.. Don't really know why!??!! In fact I've just decided I'm gonna do a video on my first proper go at it!! "Inspired by Tim" 🙂. Happy Christmas... De EI5IMB.
Yes looks like now it the time to get on the higher HF bands again... Nice video Tim! No rural RF noise when working mobile is amazing. Btw. did anybody try to do a "DX Lieutenant" by putting 3 Ampros on a metal adapter disk on top of the mag mount? Not sure if you build yourself a nice capacitor to ground in combination with the car roof though. 😂
is there any specific trusted places Tim , to buy ampro, as not sure if some are copies? Thanks for your hard work on the videos and sorry that Wales beaten by Iran and likely to go out of world cup
It does well but for good swr you’ll need a whip that’s less than a 1/4 wave long as the coil provides extra loading. That said, with the coil and 9ft tank whip I had a 2.0:1 swr which wasn’t the end of the world, a tuner at the radio will stop the radio folding back any power and the 11% reflected power at 2:1 isn’t a huge issue. 73
@@T.M.G2014 a 6ft whip with the Slidewinder would be fine on 10m. And would be fine 10-20m. It would also probably work on 40 but the longer the whip, the better the efficiency down on 40.
How is the bandwidth on 160? Is it even broad enough for SSB or only usable for CW or FT8 on one designated frequency? I got one for 80 and could hardly make any contacts. Today another one arrived for 17m and I hope I'll be more successful with it.

40m and 80m require a very good ground to work properly. Mag mount on a car doesn't cut it
Apparently a triple mag mount is better.
