Anyway, I followed your procedure: turn on ignition, hold sunroof close button, turn ignition on, punch sunroof close button, hold sunroof close button. Heard some loud clicks as it closed all the way, which apparently realigned the mechanism. It opens and closes properly now! Also, thanks to Ford for providing this easy but secret fix.

Control module is inside the motor. There isn't anything else in the circuit. Might try disconnecting the motor for awhile and then try the initialization again.
I don't have a video but here is the procedure:Front Sliding Glass Panel 1. NOTE: The driver front door must be open during the entire procedure. Open the driver front door. 2. Turn the ignition to the ON position. 3. NOTE: Complete the following within 5 seconds: A. Cycle the ignition to the OFF position and then back to the ON position. B. Press the sliding glass panel close switch for less than one second and release. C. NOTE: When the sliding glass panel close switch is pressed and held, there should be an audible click from the switch within 3 seconds. The audible click indicates that the motor has accepted the request to initialize. If there is no audible click, the procedure must be repeated from step 1. Press and hold the sliding glass panel close switch until the glass moves to the fully open and the back to the fully closed position (this could take up to 20 seconds to start). 4. Release the switch and verify successful initialization by carrying out one-touch open, one-touch close and one-touch vent operations.

Yeah, the little arm that pulls the shade is broken. It's a pretty big deal to replace. You have to buy new cables and disassemble the sunroof track to fix it, unfortunately.
@@marklaraway4723 Yes, after starting it again you leave it running and do the programming just like in the video. It's no different, other than some have a key and some just have the button.

Bought a 2014 explorer where the sunroof doesn't work at all and the shade will only close to halfway. No matter if I hold the button, the shade will not close all the way to the front. Any ideas?
Yes, the sunroof motor is bad and it is probably bad because of a water leak that shorted it out. The shade won't close because it thinks the sunroof is still open. That's the way they're supposed to work. They will only close halfway if the glass isn't fully shut

The shade will not close all the way if it thinks the glass is not fully closed. Even if it's just a half a millimeter short of being closed, the shade will only go halfway shut. It is possible your motor is losing the programming for some reason

The glass is probably not totally shut. And if the shade motor doesn't "think" it's totally closed, it won't go more then halfway. Likely your sunroof motor is dead from water intrusion caused by the sunroof drains being stopped up. If this is the case, you'll need a new sunroof motor, then it'll all program.

Thanks for the reply, What about the rest of the procedure like cycling the key on and off? Is it the same as this Escape, on, off, on? You said to push the tilt switch, do I push it towards the open side or the close side? What about the drivers door? Does it have to be open or closed for the MKS? What about the shade? Should it be open or closed while doing this procedure? Thanks for the help!

@@gods2armys so right now it is halfway shut? Or did it shut all the way and then not work anymore? Your only two options that it could be assuming the fuse is good drama is the switch or the motor. That's all that is in the circuit
So here’s my story: I bought a 2016 titanium Escape in 2018, coming off a 2 year lease w 21k miles. Carmax dealer told me it still had another year on the warranty so I didn’t purchase extended warranty. Realized after I bought it that the sunroof didn’t work well, sometimes worked sometimes didn’t. I took it to a dealer and they said warranty had JUST expired because it starts at manufacturers date. Without even looking at sunroof, said they would need to replace motor for $800, & if switch too then $1200 plus tax. But they couldn’t do anything at that moment, would need to order parts. Then sunroof worked fine for 9 months. Didn’t drive it much this summer, surprised battery didn’t go dead. But now sunroof doesn’t work again. Stuck in the vent position. Took it back to the dealer, said it would cost $150 to manually close the sunroof, but their next available appointment to manually close sunroof is in 4 weeks.
The next available appointment in 4 weeks is just to manually close the sunroof. If it takes 4 weeks to get an appointment, ask me if I’ll ever buy a ford again? Ironically, I live in Louisville where escapes are made, and escapes are super popular here.
Be sure you reset the shade, too. I did one today, replaced a sunroof motor, and then reset it, and it wouldn't work...it worked during the reset, but not after. I then reset the shade, and both worked fine.
It didn’t work for me :( maybe mines just broken-broken. Same model same year did exactly what you said atleast 12 times and no results. But mine is stuck closed. It just won’t open at all
Ok, I have a problem now.... I replaced the battery in a 2014 Escape. Sunroof was not operating afterwards. Proceeded with the initialization process, the sunroof went into VENT mode and will not do anything else. I have tried many times, even continuing to hold the button for 2+ minutes and still nothing. Even tried disconnecting the battery and trying the procedure all over again and nothing
Any noise from the sunroof when you did that? It's possible that the roof is not operating because the motor has water intrusion from the front drains being clogged. They just fail randomly when it's water-related.
I was able to shut the sunroof by swapping the roof motor with the working shade motor. Then I swapped them back and the shade closed, but now the shade will not open
I tried this on both the shade and sunroof. It doesn't do anything for the sunroof. Shade went through the entire reset. Then i could one touch it open half way and full open. Then one touch half closed and now it won't fully close. I'll need to reset it yet again.
So does the sunroof not work at all? Or just not one-touch? Sometimes you have to do it several times to get it to "take" the programming. If it still doesn't, the motor is probably bad.
@@wshaffer79 If the shade motor works and the sunroof doesn't, that's the motor. And the motor fails because of water intrusion....the front sunroof drains are clogged and need to be cleared.
@@wshaffer79 Yeah, it's easy if you're handy with tools at all. Only tool I use is a Torx #20 driver bit on my 90* electric drill. 5 minute job, but I've done a ton of them....not a hard one, though.
Nope, totally different Here's how to do that one: 1. Turn the ignition to the RUN position. 2. Push and hold the front portion of the roof opening control switch to the second detent Initialization until the glass panel moves to the VENT position. Release the switch. For an existing roof opening panel motor, go to Step 3 For a new roof opening panel motor, skip to Step 4 3. NOTE: The driver or passenger front door must be open during this step. Complete the following within 5 seconds: • Cycle the ignition to the OFF position and then back to the RUN position. • Push the front portion of the roof opening panel control switch to the second detent for one second and release. 4. Push and hold the front portion of the roof opening panel control switch to the second detent until the glass panel moves past the full VENT position. Release the switch. 5. Verify successful initialization by carrying out one-touch OPEN, one-touch CLOSE and one-touch VENT operations.
Good question. You should see my video on how to do it on a Silverado. It's dead simple. Funny thing is the same manufacturer makes the sunroof for everybody, it's not like each individual car companies making their own.

Then do the initialization and it should work. Also, then you should clear you sunroof drains since them being stopped up is probably the reason the motor is bad to start with...it gets water in it.
@@SealofPerfection where and what exactly are the sunroof drains? Do other vehicles have them?
this worked. god bless your soul
Do you know what the procedure is to do this on a 2013 Lincoln MKS? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
I missed part of it when I cut/pasted it, here's the whole thing. I'm editing this post so it doesn't mess anyone else up:
NOTE: A new front sliding glass panel motor will only move towards the VENT position and must be initialized.
1. NOTE: The driver or passenger front door must be open during the entire procedure.
Open the driver or passenger front door.
2. Turn the ignition to the ON position.
3. Complete the following within 5 seconds:
- Cycle the ignition to the OFF position and then back to the ON position.
- Push the tilt switch for less than one second and release.
- Push and hold the tilt switch until the glass moves to the fully open and then back to the fully closed position (this could take up to 20 seconds to start).
4. Release the switch and verify successful initialization by carrying out one-touch open, one-touch close and one-touch vent operations.
Power Shade Motor
NOTE: A new power shade motor only moves toward the CLOSED position and must be initialized.
5. NOTE: The driver or passenger front door must be open during the entire procedure.
Open the driver or passenger front door.
6. Turn the ignition to the ON position.
7. Pull and hold the shade control switch until the shade is in the fully closed position.
8. Complete the following within 5 seconds.
- Cycle the ignition to the OFF position and then back to the ON position.
- Pull the shade control switch for less than one second and release.
- Pull and hold the shade control switch until the shade moves to the fully open position and then back to the fully closed position (this can take up to 20 seconds to start).
9. Release the switch and verify successful initialization by carrying out one-touch open and one-touch close operations.
@@whatitis99 I updated my first reply. I missed a good bit of the procedure and didn't notice, sorry. Included the one for the shade as well.
Does this work to get the sunroof tilt to open more?
No. They just don't tilt up much
This method worked for awhile. But last night when the shade stuck at hallways. I closed it for the final time and now the button won't do anything so I can't open the shade post anymore any idea what might have happened ? This is a question for anyone not just poster 😢
Does the glass move at all
@@SealofPerfection no I permanently had the glass sealed shut. I want the shad feature to work again it worked yesterday it opend the closed to half way. So like before I turned key off on pressed shade button once the. Held down to manually close it. Next I was supposed to turn key off then on again within 5 secs and have it fully open the. Close to fix issue. When I tried that that shades never moved again. As of right now I have zero sunroof shade power. So I basically have a suv with not sunshade perk. Btw I don't care about the glass I sealed that part shut forever. I only want the shade to work again
@@gods2armys so right now it is halfway shut? Or did it shut all the way and then not work anymore? Your only two options that it could be assuming the fuse is good drama is the switch or the motor. That's all that is in the circuit
Yes it's currently closed all the way.
It shut all the and doesn't work anymore. The shade
Thanks man!!! But in my case (2018) it was the other button, same procedure but the other button. Thanks again!
Just an update.it works on the uk kuga aswell thanks dude I read the manual and its not working so this video is better
Thanks so much for the video! Saved me a trip to the dealers :) 👍
With a keyless model, how do you turn on car without starting car?
I start them. They don't turn on and off quickly enough for me if you are just turning it on and not starting the engine, so I just start them.
And the reset isn’t working. Actually tried the reset when sunroof was closed & that’s what put it in the vent position.
It just won’t open at all
Yep, sounds like you have a mechanical problem and yours is broken.
That fixed it.. Thank you!!
You're welcome!
My sunroof motor is bad. Will the shade work with a sunroof motor that is bad
I was able to shut the sunroof by swapping the roof motor with the working shade motor. Then I swapped them back and the shade closed, but now the shade will not open
Thanks brother!!
How do I do this with a push start?
I start it, cut if off, start it again
@@SealofPerfection thank you! I am about to go try it now.
Just did it and it work🎉
Great news!
Soy de colombia y fusite lanunica persona que pudo repararlo te agradezco imensamente mi Dios te bendiga
Glad you got it fixed.
Great video! Thank you and bless you! I was able to replace my sunroof motor and reprogram the roof and shade by using your video! You rock!
@@SealofPerfection sunroof does absolutely nothing. Yeah sounds like a bad motor unfortunately.
@@wshaffer79 If the shade motor works and the sunroof doesn't, that's the motor.
And the motor fails because of water intrusion....the front sunroof drains are clogged and need to be cleared.
@@SealofPerfection likely burned out and needs to be replaced then. Thanks.
@@wshaffer79 Yeah, it's easy if you're handy with tools at all. Only tool I use is a Torx #20 driver bit on my 90* electric drill.
5 minute job, but I've done a ton of them....not a hard one, though.
Going to try this on my uk kuga but it has the start button so I'll update you ASAP
Did you fix as mine are stuck open
Quelqu'un connait la procédure pour un kuga 2022 ? merci
Will this one not work?
How about this one:
ruclips.net/video/xbEaL2ok9yc/видео.html
Thank you that information worked for me
Does it work on a 2008 escape
Nope, totally different
Here's how to do that one:
1. Turn the ignition to the RUN position.
2. Push and hold the front portion of the roof
opening control switch to the second detent Initialization
until the glass panel moves to the VENT
position. Release the switch.
For an existing roof opening panel motor, go to Step 3
For a new roof opening panel motor, skip to Step 4
3. NOTE: The driver or passenger front door
must be open during this step.
Complete the following within 5 seconds:
• Cycle the ignition to the OFF position and
then back to the RUN position.
• Push the front portion of the roof opening
panel control switch to the second detent for
one second and release.
4. Push and hold the front portion of the roof
opening panel control switch to the second detent until the glass panel moves past the full VENT position. Release the switch.
5. Verify successful initialization by carrying out
one-touch OPEN, one-touch CLOSE and one-touch VENT operations.
Didn’t do nothing continued to stop half was and not close
Hi thank you for this informations. Can you tell us where the motor is located tnks
Motor is on the driver side above the visor
i did the sunroof with no problem, but the shade does not respond, any solution?
Try the procedure several times. It is possible the motor is bad
@@SealofPerfection is an escape 2018 is the same procedure?
@@nachito1215 if it has the same switch setup it should be, but I'm not a hundred percent on a 2018
@@SealofPerfection the car was with the battery disconnected several weeks, i guess that it deprogramed due to that.
@@nachito1215 Yes, that will do it sometimes.
Fantástico. Muchas gracias.
THANK you!!!!!!
Why does Ford do these silly cheat codes? Anyway, thanks so much, this was very helpful!
Good question. You should see my video on how to do it on a Silverado. It's dead simple. Funny thing is the same manufacturer makes the sunroof for everybody, it's not like each individual car companies making their own.
Thank you so much 👍
Help it didn't work
What issue does yours have?
the visor wont close and now it is starting to snow
@@carriedow9033 Visor? Do you mean the sunroof glass?
@@SealofPerfection yes
@@CarrieDow If this didn't work, you can check the fuse, but it's likely either the motor or the switch.
It started to open, now it is cracked open and won't do anything else. Darn it
If the motor isn't even trying to move at all, it's probably bad.
It didn't work for my Escape. I guess it doesn't apply to all of them. It's going to cost me about $200 to get it fixed.
If your motor is bad, then no, it won't work.
Excelent!
Thanks
A little piece of the bracket that holds my shade to the motor has broken off, so now the shade is constantly open. Do you know if this is something I can buy and replace myself, or if there's a way for me to reattach the shade? Not sure how it happened
Are you talking at the front of the shade where it attaches to the little tab that moves it back and forth?
@@SealofPerfection Yes! It seems a piece has broken off there, and I can't seem to get it to attach back.
@@drummerdude3214 that sounds like a piece of the track has broken off. I do not believe that peace comes without buying the whole track unfortunately. Or actually at least that one side rail. The very newest model escapes, you can buy the rails separately, left or right
Do you know what sizes the sun shade is? Mine is coming apart and I need to order a new one.
They aren't ordered by size that I know of, you order it for the specific vehicle.
