If Shadowhunters had stopped midway through season one and been cancelled like Firefly, EVERYONE would be Praising this movie.

While it's definitly not the best movie, as someone who read the books i prefer the movie far more than the show. It's a lot more accurate, especially the portrayal of Jace. Jamie Campbell Bower was the perfect choice for him and Godfrey Gao as Magnus was iconic. Seeing how they layed out this movie, If they had put a little bit more effort into this, it actually could've been an amazing movie series. I highly reccomend you to read the books, it will make you appreciate the movie a lot more even though it's not the best.

      edit: spelling
legit think that all they needed was to tone down some aspects (garden scene, the last scenes too) and amp others like Hotel Dumort, Luke becoming head of the NYC pack, and idk maybe make the Institute feel more like a home base. If they cut the first movie in half too and made the central aspect her finding out about the world her mother hid from her I think it would've had more breathing room to pace itself and flesh things out more. idek what the focal "big bad" to overcome and find resolution from would've been that way, but with more breathing room they could've made a bigger deal about Clary facing off the ravener in the beginning, Hotel Dumort and the fight scene there, Luke getting the pack, the fight with Dorthea/Abbadon, Valentine more eerie show and less cheesy Disney villain tell, give Magnus more scenes to build him up as eccentric and wise and comedic relief alongside his value coming through, and get the love triangle (square really?) more space to develop and show bc gosh the pacing in the book was pretty quick but the movie made it feel almost premature and weirder. Idk what the rush was man ugh. We could've had Church the cat in it too! 😭
and as far as casting, my only big tweak would be Alec (sorta Valentine too? sorry mdns). they all looked a bit older than they're meant to be even with the movie aging everyone up, but Alec legit looked like a grown man bc his actor was and it makes it more noticeable that the others are older than 18 too? if that makes sense?

as a fan of the books I have to say this is better. it's not great. the more I watch it the more cringe is becomes. but to me it's better than the show. the show would reference books in like the most stupid ways. like valentine's spaghetti. I was screaming when they did that because the spaghetti thing is actually so funny in the book. the actual story is that for his birthday, Valentine told little Jace he could have whatever he wanted and Jace asked for a bath full of spaghetti. and valentine gave him A BATH FULL OF SPAGHETTI. it's the only evidence we have that valentine actually cared for Jace. or anyone. but in the show they just had Val cook Jace some spag and I was like what the fuck is this shit. where is my baby Jace in a bath full of spag?!

Like, compared to the books, the movie is much more faithful than the series. I think Jace is better here, Clary too, I think Lily did a great job with the character. I like both Magnus' adaptations (show and movie), I like more Izzy and Alec from the show because obviously they have more development even though some things bother me. I kind of understand that the movie has different things, but the show is just a mess in my opinion, it took a completely different path. As a fan I really hope that one day we have a good adaptation of The Mortal Instruments and the other books in this universe. Anyway I liked your video, this movie is kind of wronged and I consider it "ok" not wonderful, but it deserved at least a sequel.

At some point, he and Matt were the only reason I still watched Shadowhunters. But book Magnus is much less dark than in the show. He never really takes things seriously. Only when its absolutely necessary. He is so much fun to read. I kind of missed that in the show. Also, I hated the way his and Alec's relationship started in the show. Magnus put so much pressure on him, which, in the books, he never does! Every step of their relationship, in the books, is on Alec's terms because Magnus is aware of their age and power imbalance. That's what makes this relationship so great! Magnus in season one was constantly pressuring Alec. I truly hated that!

I think the show just has too much of a TvShow vibe, like gossip girl? Although I was informed that it gets better after the first few episodes and maybe I'm just biased. Either way, I figure the problem is not really with one thing specifically because it seems like they wanted to have it all ways and ripped themselves apart at the seams. They wanted to be more faithful to the books, but then these characters were too old for that and it just seemed out of character and kinda cringe, the actors were good, but I think it was the directing that was wrong and the plot just fell apart right then and it was not convincing enough to make a sequel.

i agree that it seems like they tore themselves apart trying to do too much at once. i think that damaged the show and the movie tbh. to me the show didn't really have the heart of the book and all the adaptations almost feel like with slight changes they could get away with being things of their own completely which sucked bc i had so much hope for them both times!
i also agree i think the actors were decent (just the age thing really), but the script and direction were just... yikes. it almost felt too teeny-bop to me too, like how you mentioned the gossip girl comparison? its one fo the few shows i feel should've had the darker, sorta kind dark academica vibe they've been applying to so many teen shows lately.

I just like the movie's Jace more because he looks a bit more starved down kinda, and the Jace from the show...well he looks strong but he also looks like he hits the gym and eats his healthy burger or something, Jace from the movie fits the character better because Jace from the books felt more like someone who'd skip a meal because he's caught up trying to solve something. Maybe I'm not making a great point here, but the show really doesn't have the dark vibe you mention, they could have really ditched the whole drama part out, there was enough content in the books to make a good show that doesn't need to rely on cheap drama. In the movie it unfortunately felt even more abundant so I don't blame people for liking the show better.
Also, did you realise that Clary's mom is actress Lena Headey? Aka Cersei Lannister??
That woman knows how to act and she has the perfect "fierce but also caring" personality down, I don't know how that went wrong? In the movie she has 5 lines and the rest of it she is left floating in rooms. I'm just really going to blame the directing on this one, they did not make up their mind on which parts of the plot to give up and which parts to actually focus on. Just a shame

No hate or anything to the actors or make up teams or anything! It just felt, like you said, a bit more idk "effortless" if that's the word for movie Jace. I'm also a fan of the actor Jamie Campbell Bower! And yeah they really could've ditched the drama aspect in the show and movie... there was so much there already in the source material and it felt like they tried to somehow both water it down and amp it up too much.
And yes! I love Lena and she truly is such a great actor. So is Robert Sheehan imo who plays Simon, I used to watch him in that UK show Misfits and he really could've done witty but awkward best friend role justice... they both just weren't given the best material to work with I think. Lily Collins is a good actress from what I know too so movie-wise yeah, I think we gotta blame the script and directing tbh. For the show I think its was maybe that they tried catering to an audience that didn't overlap necessarily with the book crowd (or at least not enough) for it to feel right when they made the changes they did.

Sean saw the TV Show first so obviously in his mind, he's used to a certain view of the story and so he's more attached to the TV Show because that's where he connected to the story, like the readers who connected to the books, they say they are so much better, and just like the people who saw the movie, I think it all comes to perspective and to what people expect from the movie which is different for every single person, let's not get mad for an opinion. The title is fine, it expresses a point of view. As a fan of the books AND the TV show, I don't mind hearing different POVs.

I've never read the books but I've watched both the movie and the series and I've got to say that I preferred the movie. It was more consistent in its story telling and mood. I thought Lily was a great Clary as well. I liked how we could see Clary's memory come back as she remembers runes. I didn't like how this played out in the series. However it was nice to see how the story unfolds in the series as well as seeing how all the characters develop. The Magnus/Alec story line is chefs kiss and I kinda wish we got more movies. Also Clary's hair in the series especially the beginning was awful.

I really thought Jamie Campbell Bower was great as Jace and I liked Lily Collins as Clary. I really liked Simon's casting and the Clary's mom looks like her too. In fact, the casting being different is the reason I didn't watch the show. It would've been kinda cool if they let Lily Collins keep her British accent though because her mom has one too

I have to agree, the TV show is way better imo I will say the movie is a lot more faithful to the books in some ways (the institute is way more accurate, there’s no tech or guns bc runes mess with electronics/gunpowder, the kiss scene is actually the way it happened and so is Simon’s kidnapping, etc) but I definitely like the character dynamics, and the ways the plot lines were changed and switched around so much better in the show. They did Malec sooooo much better and they gave plot lines to characters who fit them much better and I just overall think it did a really good job

  • @Magdv

As someone who's read all the shadowhunter books i can say with ABSOLUTE certainty that the movie is MUCH better than the show. I'm sorry but it was perfect from casting to storyline, although i know that a few things were changed in the movie like the ending but they still made it quite accurate to the first book.
I also adore the cast (all of them) if i'm being honest, i know that people like Matthews Alec more cause of his looks & cause they got malec but to me he didn't give off Alec like Kevins did. Kevin looked older than a teenager yes but his aura and acting truly made me think of Alec from the books. Part of this has also to do with the bad writing in the show cause they made both the Lightwood siblings a lot nicer with Clary than they actually were, like it took them 3 books to actually become friends and love each other but in the show they made Izzy act all cheerful besties with Clary from the very start when she wasn't anything like that and don't even get me started on the parabatai bs.
I personally would have switched show Izzy with movie Izzy cause show Izzy looked a lot more accurate to her description with the dark hair and dark eyes. What i liked about the movie actress is that she just like Kevin got the character right but like i said before this also is the fault of bad writing in the show. Someone who they did cast really well was the actor for Magnus in the show, he was really good.
The rest of the cast is absolutely perfect like Simon, Hodge, Jace, Clary, Valentine, Luke, Jocelyn, Magnus etc looked exactly like i imagined them to look. I remember a lot of people complaining that Valentines actor looked too hot for his character and that he didn't have silver hair but Valentine has ALWAYS been described as a handsome musculair man with a youthful face so i don't know where they got that from? I do think that they should've sticked to the silver hair but who knows they tried and it might have looked really bad but despite that the actor absolutely killed it as the villain.
It's been ten years and i'm still so upset that we won't ever get a second movie, and it also won't be the same without Godfrey.
