    All very well, but you fail to mention some very important expensive "niggles" with the 997.2, which I have come across since buying my 2009 997.2 Carrera 4S.
    Porsche make a big issue of always using genuine parts, but the truth is that some parts are not reliable, such as the rear light clusters, which are prone to their seals failing allowing the formation of condensation in the lights, which at £300-£400 each for a replacement is a bit of a shock, the top mounts are also prone to early failure, again OE quality is questionable, also brake discs wear very quickly with even moderate use and there are better cheaper alternatives. Also, whilst OE exhausts are good quality, the bolts used with them are not and should be replaced with stainless steel versions asap - Porsche will still fit mild steel which corrode v.quickly.
    Another design fault is the positioning of the condensers for the AC, which are prone to damage from impact and collection of debris which collect moisture and allow the condensers to corrode; grilles are available at a reasonable cost , which should be immediately considered to avoid expensive repairs.
    Otherwise, I have found the 911, 997.2 to be magnificent!!!

    The Carrera S is not wider than the base Carrera. However, the base Carrera 4, Carrera 4S and Turbo do have the wider body. Also, the GT3 has the narrow body.

      Master car - would not buy on spec... I disagree, the gen 2 has the better PCM and I would always prefer an "S" over a base model having owned Turbos, Boxster S, currently 928S4 and a gen 1 997 4S

    • @arda_
      @arda_ 7 лет назад +1

      I believe in the 997 the s is also wide.

    • @paull3179
      @paull3179 7 лет назад +4

      The 4 and 4s are about 1.76 inches wider as is the turbo. The S is the same as the standard. I owned the base model and now have the 4S which also has wider 305 tires in the back but the 19 inch rims are the same width.

    • @WanderingFriar
      @WanderingFriar 6 лет назад +1

      I actually checked this out before buying my Carerra S it is wider than the Standard Carrera and the 4S is wider than the Carerrs S.
      Carrera - 1808mm
      Carerra S - 1852mm
      Carerra 4S - 1952mm
      I didn't buy based in width obviously. Just don't need to lug the weight of the 4S around all year for the short winter use it gives me. I thought the Carerra S was a nice middle ground.
      These sizes are for the reviewed 997 Gen 2. Mine's a 2010 Cab.

    The 997.1 was not "rife" with IMS problems. That's an issue with the 996, but it's extremely rare for the 997.1.

    This video has a lot of good advice, I recently bought a 991.2 Targa 4. I was just looking for a 911 4 if it be a C4, C4S, T4 or T4S. Because of the wide-body and light bar. Ended up finding a perfect 991.2 with nearly $60k Cad in options including PTS Irish green and natural leather espress.cognac interior. Buy based on options not based on trim.

    The tiptronic is also good and very sporty and sensitive when you tap the pedal. It goes in the top of the line turbo too. PDK shifts much faster than a manual not at the same speed. There is a big difference between the base and S models that you notice right away. The braking system on the 4S is the same as the turbo and preloads when let go of the accelerator and the car stops quickly without applying pressing the pedal hard. I hated the base model brakes which are far inferior. The torque comes on much stronger in the S, 4S models and it feels like a big engine in the back like a v8. The base engine has to revved up higher all the time which I hate as I am used my powerful Audis.

    Just stumbled upon your video today, great advice, and nicely done with practical adivce. Don't mind the video snobs, we enthusiasts appreciate your knowledge which was given freely in the video. And it's nice to hear from those who actually have experience with many vehicles. I've been on the fence over a 997.1 vs.a 997.2 and almost bought a 997.1 a few weeks ago, but intuition told me I should wait for a newer car. Glad to hear your recommendation confirming my intuition.

    the 997.2's do have bore scoring. If you go 20k between oil changes with any car you will have engine issues. change your oil once a year or every 5k and you wont have a problem. Jake Raby has a free video series about it and it makes sense. He gets into oil dillution and some of the root causes. but the main take away and easiest preventative is change your oil. Additionally on 997.1's change your fuel injectors.

    • @bradmaxwell1143
      @bradmaxwell1143 7 лет назад

      The official service interval is 2 years on Gen 2, if you do a shed load of miles maybe it comes up earlier? My Carrera was serviced exactly a year ago and the light still hasn't come on, I've only done about 5k since then and it has 64k on it now, the dash still shows nov 18 for next service, maybe yours wasn't reset correctly?

    • @paull3179

      2 years is still too long to wait for an oil change despite what Porsche recommends. A once a year inspections of the car during the oil change is a good idea to catch any problems early before more expensive damage occurs.

      If you could shed for the higher price of a 4S, I'd say go for it. Off the line acceleration is mind boggling and all round handling as well. Before you buy, check if it's had it's front differential service. My friend's 4S had to fix it and was lucky enough to have it covered under warranty at around 55,000kms. It's a ~$4,000 job. He didn't even notice that there was an issue with it!

    The 997.1 (gen 1 997) cars don't have a serious problem with the IMS bearing. The bore scoring is a bigger issue that the 997.2 fixed with the engine upgrades (along with adding more power). The main reason to buy a .2 is the interior, especially the PCM/nav unit, which lets the 997.1 down.

      Wrong, but I can’t be bothered to explain fully. Basically around 10% failures of which 8% have been fixed resulting in around 0.002% failure rate which are basically the ultra low mileage cars. 0.002% is hardly rife. More likely to suffer bore scoring.

    Here's the useful content you missed our for all the viewers who just wasted 11minutes 1 seconds of their lives: upto mid 2006 base C2 used the 3.6 M96 from the 996 with same bore score and IMS bearing issues, the C2S mid 2005 on used the revised M97 but with M96 bad IMS bearing and similar ish bore score issues, mid 2005 on went M97 bigger more reliable IMS bearing, still bore score, mid 2005 on went M97 big reliable IMS and moderate bore score likelihood, then 3.8S was M97 big reliable IMS bearing and very likely bore score. There was an early upto mid 2005 3.8S also which was the worst of the lot (early M96 architecture, unreliable IMS bearing and worst for bore score. I'm drunk. Bye.

      Hi Harry, do you still stand by this comment? I have no reason to disbelieve you. I am merely looking for some kind of confirmation that I'm about to do the right thing. I have the opportunity to buy a 997.1 C2S which is a manual car. Its had a borescope inspection and the results were that there is negligible scoring. The car has 51k miles on it. There are other cars on the market which are higher miles but have had the hartech liner work done. The car i want is perfect (for me), black, manual, full tan leather interior, i know the previous owners and its absolutley mint. The price is right and i cant see it dropping any less. Should i worry about having to potentially get some preventative work done, or just buy it and enjoy it? Thanks

    So much exaggeration with the gen 1... Honestly... 🥴. The IMS issue is rare on gen 1... And the bore scoring is massively exaggerated! As for specs... Well, get fitted a touch screen screen with satnav and Bluetooth and you will be good. Much cheaper than a gen 2 and the driving feel is meant to be much better in the 1st gen. And... On the bore scoring issue, only 5% of cars were affected and you can have it checked and then fit a low temperature thermostat to reduce the risk even further. These cars are meant to be driven and change the oil frequently (at least every year). I have a gen 1 C2S with all the above modifications (and more) and the car with 92k is bore score free, and an absolute pleasure and a hoot to drive! Save your money, do your research, don't believe all the massively OTTness about the gen 1 issues and go drive both cars...
