I just realized that of all the interviews I have seen with Paul, I have never once heard him use a swear word or say a bad word about anyone...what a kind soul he is...
He's Christian, I believe.
He has used stronger language before...though usually in the context of telling a story (i.e. the Snickers and Grape Soda story) and maybe the Everybody Use Your G. D. Turn Signal song could count. But yeah...he's not foul-mouthed, in interviews as a general rule at least. It's actually refreshing. And also good practice if you're ever in the situation of being interviewed in a setting that doesn't allow it (television etc....).
And you're right about Paul never speaking bad of anyone. He's one of if not the most respectful musician I know of...and his enthusiasm for music is catching!
Paul Gilbert lost his hearing? wow...my respect for him just shot a thousand percent more...and I have been a fan for more than 20 years now
It’s like he’s Beethoven reincarnated!
Now you know what this is about. 😃

I feel so lucky to be able to watch this. It's like I'm right there with you guys, sharing coffee with two people I respect and admire so much. Thank you so much Neal and Paul!
21st century americana.
Hey guys, big Gilbert and Transatlantic fan here!
I think Angus is playing a G note but bending it sharp with a blues bend on the E string, whilst the bass copies the fret the note is on but without the blues bend.
Brilliant mind, kind heart
Two music legends together! 🤯
Great interaction! Two things. At one point Paul mentions learning a song in different keys; I've seen some Pat Metheny interviews recently where he said he'll learn songs in all 12 keys. So that's solid advice. Second thing is later Paul talks about being able to play a melody on a kazoo first take, no problems. Frank Zappa said, "If you can say it you can play it" and that really stuck with me as a writer.
One last important bit of knowledge I'd like to pass on. I once met an iconic jazz pioneer, no names mentioned but this guy is a legend, and he told me something very important, something that greatly improved my life to this day and maybe it will help you.
He looked me straight in the eye and said, "Boy, get me some heroin."
Don’t know if paul has a fridge on his studio or a bunch of guitars in his kitchen.
So cool that Paul mentions “Tower of Babel” off of Captain Fantastic. He’s right…that’s an incredible song and that third chord is killer. Great stuff.
My goodness!! Watching these two music enthusiasts chatting makes me smile the whole time. Always love you, Paul!! Thank you, Neal, for this!! Rock n roll!! 🤘🏿🤘🏿
This was such a joy to see and hear. Kanami Tono from Japanese female hard rock band, Band Maid says Paul Gilbert is one of her biggest inspiration.
Somebody please press the ground lift button! 😆
Thanks for releasing these podcasts, Neal, I enjoy them a lot.
The buzzing was from Paul's amp
you mean the noisegate...
@@noworries12 Uhm, no, I mean the ground lift switch. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ground_lift
@@MarkusGrimm83 yes I know...but uhm no, it's normal amp buzz...so you press the button on your noisegate, buddy
Paul wearing that engineer's cap reminds me of when I was really young, my uncle Norton Buffalo used to wear one of those all the time and Paul totally reminds me of him anyway. Norton was an incredible harmonica player, he played with all kinds of great musicians back in the day like Steve Miller, I really miss that guy he was so cool!
Watching Neal scream Oh, Darlin' solidified my belief that Neal was the GOAT. That fret slide in Green Tinted 60's Mind that Paul pulled off in Mr. Big made me a fan of his back in that day. Learning he is a fan of Rundgren /Utopia and Elton. wow. Just wow. Almost prerequisites for any musician worth his ilk. When these two got together in YMC with Portnoy of course, lest we forget the great drumming in Custard, was just icing on the cake. PG is a great human. Awesome interview.
Gotta love Paul Gilbert!
I noticed the Back In Black G/G# thing and, for a while, I thought I might be the only human to have noticed it. I trawled the internet to reassure myself and found this. Thank the stars for your existence.
Great stuff ! I really wish they talked about Paul's amazing solos on Sola Scriptura. Part - 2, please !
Same. The Door solo is probably my favorite solo ever and I was really hoping they’d talk about it.
Wow, wow, wow! That is a revelation about Back In Black!
PLEASE PAUL DO A PODCAST!!!!!
These two legends have accomplished so much yet their love for music is so pure, passionate and child-like
Paul's great
How did I not know about this show before??? SUBBED!
I love both of these guys. I did not know Neal played in Eric Burdon's band.
Couldn't stop watching once I started.
Paul is an awesom kazoo shredder. Can't wait for the kazoo tour.
I love this, I love the idea of musicians talking about music, don't stop with this podcast! You can make one with David Paich!!!!!
Yellow Matter Custard is one of my very favorite guilty pleasures. I wish they would have done a serious studio recording. Definitely a double LP. YMC could belt out The Beatles like few have.
Hey Paul! My Grandfather wore a railroad hat just like that! CooL!
Paul, Remember you opening up for Rush on Presto Tour w. the leather pants... "Oh, well, a touch of grey
Kind of suits you anyway"
Those open strings in Gloria were so common back then. My classical guitar teacher showed me that stuff and it was very cool, Ritchie Havens kind of playing.
Trying to build up my Christmas collection, so I'll definitely order that new Paul Gilbert Christmas album!
Great presentation thank you from NJ
its funny ..but if i ever got a chance to meet Paul..i would put my arm around him and tell him..that so cute those little blues things you play and your little slide an all.. but YOU ARE THE SHRED MASTER TO US.. NOW STAAAARRRT SHREDDIN'..lol.. Yes we awwwll live in the past LONG LIVE RACER X!!!(close second: MR BIG)..sorry..i recently listen to some Racer x,Mr Big, and some of your various solo songs, and i had a severe relapse of shredomania syndrome.( and im not sorry)
🤘🤨🫡😏...but you do/play what makes you happy my friend...you deserve it...thanks for shredding our faces off over the years🫡
What a joy!
Wow. Just wow
Awesome! I've been waiting for this one.
Awesome interview, really enjoyed this!
Thanks Neal and Paul. This was fantastic. I'm looking forward to more!
Thank you!!!
It was the called the BSharps.
Excellent interivew!!! Thank you!!!!!
Interesting and cool interview.. thank you :)
I'm Amazing too.
Another great interview/podcast!
@12:30 brilliant practice tip!
Great stuff!
What we've learned here is kids...humanity false is what makes music good ...if u make it too perfect its lost...PG great as usual...great player n great fan of music....it was me that blew up the meth lab...my territory lol
I got to try that kazoo thing… not sure my wife and kids would appreciate it though 😁
LMAO at that
I coulda done it on kazoo
(Rudolph) part 🤣
Paul Gilbert is a human juke box...
He knows every song ever written :-)
@@heavyrelic8506 And some that haven't been written yet...😁
😅
I hate to admit it but I'm sipping a beer, not coffee. It's too late for coffee. It'll keep me up way too late. These shows are great by the way!
And Paul's got a cat! All the best musicians seem to have cats! Jordan Rudess has a couple. Love 'em!
The supposed Russian a capella thing almost sounds like the Skyrim theme choir to me.
Paul you’re my hero. Please move to Texas and get out of Portland!
Speaking of bad chords in songs, how about the chorus of I'll Wait by VH. The keyboard plays a D sus, D major while the vocals sing d minor. Kind of has that same effect as "steel horse I ride" in Bon Jovi's Dead or Alive. Kind of funny and you wonder if they just didn't notice or what.
Aww come on Gilbert! You are a guitar player! Where are the guitars!? :D
I hear something buzzing
Guitar+amp is on. Mic catch it.
Portland...yikes! Stay safe
I miss living in Portland. Until January 2017 when some racist pigs told my Asian wife to go back to Mexico and some others painted a swastika on my Jewish neighbor's garage door, it was a wonderful place to live. Looks like Paul moved there after I moved away.
Here is my "good mistake". Before I could really play guitar I found a Beatles chord book and was using it to learn. And on a bunch of songs they kept throwing in this A11 chord. It made no sense at all to me. Years later I learned that John's rhythm style would often have him keep strumming between chord transitions. He would just hit all the open strings for a 16th before moving to the next chord. EG All My Loving. Well guess what chord all the open strings form. And like Paul's examples, it does not make sense musically but if you leave it out of your playing on those tunes, it misses.
I wonder if you can just run the podcast audio through a noise gate...
Is there a song Paul Gilbert CAN'T play?
I don’t think so
NONE !!!!!
i have HUNDREDS of recorded songs over 30 yrs -that have min 6 tracks -max anywhere up to 10 - 12 tracks -all laying UNMIXED because i love writing and recording too much- dont enjoy mixing ! .....i dont know if i am clever or stupid !
Paul and Neal should do some music together.
“The Door” Neal’s album. Him and Paul
@@andypearce5537 That album is called Sola Scriptura, The Door is one of the songs, with the awesome solo by Paul!
Vegas says 3 - 1 that a dog or child will interupt this
Paul needs a new amp. And he needs to go back to vocal records.
Thank you Paul. I finally understand why I never bought any of your CD's.
I'd expect better mic tone from Paul.
paul needs more gear in his kitchen
