Paul’s definitely one the greatest guitarist imo. His solos are always what the song/track needs. Tells a story, fits and is always fantastic.
To Be With You is one of the greatest solo of all time IMO. For a speed metal god to play something tasteful and never show-offy on acoustic is just perfect.

Very true. I use to play a lot of P.O.D, Limp Bizkit, System of A Down, Slipnknot, some Metallica, Nirvana. I thought I was king shit (in my room). Then I saw a Paul Gilbert live concert video.........(BOOOOM) my mind was blown up. I couldn't believe what I was hearing, he was beyond anything I've ever seen (as a kid so I was limited). Ever since I've been trying to play like Paul (and failing miserably) but on the good side, my skills have increased 100 fold, now Metallica solos are a Segway scooter ride in the park, I stopped playing all my old songs because they were just too easy. Now I'm playing songs "Scarified", Extreme "Play With Me", and other bands like Megadeth, Steve Vai, Jason Becker, EVH, SRV, some classical and now I'm gonna go for Ygnwie Malmsteen songs. I wouldn't be pushing myself to play better if not for Paul Gilbert. He's the man!
@@reachblowsdick7222 Full power to you man. Keep shredding , that's the way to go. After a while, start with more technical stuffs like Alan Holdsworth, that's the pinnacle of jazz fusion. Pick some Guthrie too , keep practicing.
@@smokedonnie - Alan Holdsworth is an anomaly and his music challenges the skills of even those who are world class virtuoso, he must be an alien or from another dimension. He's one of Steve Vai's favorite and would put him at the top of his list.. Here's a quote from Vai himself..
"His thought process was phenomenal. I can hear any guitar player and I know what they’re doing - I might not be able to play it - but I can see it in my mind’s eye. But I do not know what the fuck Holdsworth was doing at all…”

@@reachblowsdick7222 couldn't have said it any better myself. Another one to look out for is Shawn Lane, that's a pure anomaly. Even Guthrie says he can't play Shawn Lane.
Paul is not just wonderful guitar player, teacher and song writer, he is also very entertaining to watch. His goofy personality is simply disarming

you can see it from Herman's smile, he really admires paul, probably one of his biggest inspirations
I still could not believe how very clean every single note when Paul Gilbert played very fast.
The amazing thing is that Paul is not playing at super high tempo like 250bpm or 300bpm. it's his "cleanliness' from his picking that creates the perception of fast, especially when he plays those 16th note triplet runs. Like Scarified and Technical Difficulties are not even 150 bpm.
Paul Gilbert is the picking god, no one sounds as clean as him.

@@saddocatto9245 Yup. Most of guitar players are like that too. Give them an acoustic guitar to play and they're lost and mostly without time. And I say that as I primarily solo guitar player/vocalist myself.

Paul Gilbert did a series in Total Guitar, those lessons taught me so much about the guitar, I will be forever grateful. I have seen him live on many occasions and when he played JB's in Dudlee he did an informal meet and greet..... I panicked (as I was not worthy) and left before he came out of his dressing room. Biggets mistake ever, thank you Paul, you're a proper gentleman.

Its a testament on why i call Paul Gilbert the guitar player's "Guitarist". Not to critique Herman or anything(he tends to go off the style of the backing music on jams), in this jam he never went off the track but still sounded his way..kudos to both PG and Herman. I love Paul's shred, but his take on the blues is always so amazing. It has all the soul it should, but it is still mind bogglingly technical, in my opinion. I don't think he can possibly do any wrong on his guitar.
Paul is an awesome guitarist and a even better human being. I could spend hours just listening to him talking about playing guitar. He has to be one of the most passionate musician on this planet.

I always thought it'd be great if Paul Gilbert had his own Late Night TV show like Letterman. Of course focused on musical guests, music education etc. He's super down to earth, smart, hilarious, has that public speaking voice, and I would definitely subscribe to whatever new channel had him on. Plus you'd get to hear him rip leads nightly.
I have taken Pauls lessons and the personal feedback from him is absolutely priceless. It's so good.

@@hermanpops Nope. It's less than 300 dollars for a year of lessons plus his interactions with other students. That's less than 30 bucks a month

The 3 string lick at the start of Paul's "Get Out of My Yard" album blew my mind when it came out. Paul is my all time inspiration for guitar playing, I started off as a Racer X fan and learned to love Mr Big and all the solo work as well.
After seeing this video…I am now a subscriber….Paul Gilbert is one of the nicest and coolest Guitar players today…he is a Guitar Monsters with a Kind Heart….WOW..
I would call Paul Gilbert an any guitarist guitarist, he could replicate pretty much any 80s shredder without any problem.

Not only that but he can replicate any music genre period. Along with having ridiculous chops, his playing is so melodic and tasteful he can fit in with any musical environment. I’ve seen so many shredders look out of place out of a metal context
