Fats Waller came to prominence in what many historians would call the "Harlem era," which lasted from the late 1920s to the early 1930s, preceding the big band "Swing era." During the Harlem Renaissance, many artists and writers (as well as musicians of other genres) looked down on jazz as not "sophisticated enough" for them. However, that didn't deter the titans of Harlem stride from playing. Fats Waller, arguably the most famous of them, was a regular in speakeasies and underground parties, widely regarded as one of the most talented stride pianists as well as one of the most "entertaining entertainers" of his time. One of his most famous compositions, "Honeysuckle Rose," was originally composed in the late 1920s and recorded by other players like Frank Trumbauer and Fletcher Henderson before Waller was able to record it himself, with his famous recording debuting in 1934. Since then, it has since become a jazz standard, being played in jazz clubs at tempos anywhere from a slow shuffle to an up-tempo swing. Charlie Parker also used the A-section of the tune to contrifact his tune "Scrapple from the Apple" a decade later, which became another jazz standard. Here, we were inspired by Fats' original recording, as well as recordings by other greats such as Charlie Parker and Bill Evans. We also feature a fantastic bass solo by Alex... just listen to that swing!!!
On our channel, we like to share the amazing music that we call jazz. We like to share our playing jazz standards, modern jazz, funk, R&B, and original compositions.
