  • THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR - GLIDER SEQUENCE DETAILS, click SHOW MORE
The real stunt pilot is Roy McMaster, actors are Steve McQueen and German actress Astrid Heeren. Noel Harrison sings 'Windmills Of Your Mind'.
The glider sequence in the original Director Norman Jewison Thomas Crown Affair (Steve McQueen and Fay Dunaway) was filmed at the Northeastern Gliderport in Salem, NH (west of Rockingham Park race track) on July 6-7, 1967. The location is now a golf course (42⁰45.468’N, 071⁰14.385’W) and the runway turned into a golf driving range. Between shots the runway became a motorcycle course for Steve to let off steam.
The aerial sequences were from a helicopter and the close ups of Steve were done on the ground. The flying sequence Noel Harrison background music,” Windmills of Your Mind”, was the only part of the movie to receive an Oscar. Eight flights were needed for the “in-the-air” sequences. The loops were needed for the script and the music.
There were, coincidently, two Schweizer SGS 1-23H-15’s on the field, both painted in Ag Cat yellow. One was placed on a pilon on the hill top and Steve was the “pilot”. Helpers on the tail and wing tip provided the pitch and roll for the facial expressions. The other, N9860E, was piloted by Roy McMaster who was the chief flight instructor for Northeastern Gliderport at the time. The landing closeup used a car tow spliced into the actual landing.
Both Astrid Heeren and Steve McQueen enjoyed their first glider flights while there. Steve received about 18 instructional flights in a Schweizer SGS 2-33 and might have been solo except the filming schedule required moving to the next site. He was inspired to later pursue his own pilot’s license.
Glider type is Schweizer SGS 1-23H-15 en.wikipedia.o...
The second Thomas Crown Affair with Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo wove in the music with a cameo by Faye Dunaway as the shrink. That Duo Discus flying sequence take-off starts at Harris Hill in Elmira, NY then shifts to Eagle Field in Port Matilda, PA and back and forth with sequences on the Harris Hill ridge.

It's for certain the producers of the film would never let Steve McQueen pilot that sailplane. It was flown by stunt pilot Roy McMaster. The close-ups of McQueen in the plane were shot on the ground. Editing of the landing scene was skillfully done to make it look as if he had actually flown it.

Steve McQueen and German actress Astrid Heeren of Castle Keep fame. The short, crisp dialog at the end was special for this movie. Even his hand gesture was special.
“Someday you ought to buy a motor for that thing. I wish you wouldn't always undershoot the field like that.”--Astrid.
    “Why?”-Thomas Crown.
    “Oh, come on, Tommy.”--Astrid.
“Well, it'd end all my worries..”-Thomas Crown - shades of Richard Cory.
“What do you have to worry about?”--Astrid - more Richard Cory.
“Who I want to be tomorrow.”--Thomas Crown - showing his bored of life side.

    Dusty Springfield'version is kind... atmospheric....
I think I'd rather Noel Harrison's more. Anyway.
    This first movie is state-of-the-art;
Both main characters' actors (specially Steve Mac Quinn - of my favorites) are unique; the plot is all-time-suspense : a cat-mouse hunt-game; the music carefully fitting in every scene.
The plot keeps us in continuous tense, while Legrand's music is a calming, soothing interlude.
All together : movie, story, staging, actors, music, are a great harmonic combination 🎯
Though I saw it only once in cinema room, some when in Eighties, I can still picture most of its scenes.
(the 2nd, newer, remake.... with Brosnan and Russo, though decent, and convincing, hardly can reach the high standards of the 1st one - IMHO)

Whenever I hear this song I can only think of Morecambe & Wise and a sketch they did with it. Those fans of 1970’s British comedy duo will know the sketch.

This is Schweizer 1 - 23 glider. This is not N8860E .This glider from this movie was N9860E.
    From Wurtsboro Airport,upstate,N.Y.
I did so many flights on this glider at Wurtsboro Airport .Some flights over 5 or 6 hrs.,flying on local ridge ,with eagles and other gliders in the thermals.
Absolutely, this is great glider with 15 meters wing.
I am so happy to have so many hrs experience on this glider from this movie.
    Now, I have great memories.
    Life is great.
    Jan Polubinski glider pilot.

A lot of the 'cool' was/is directly down to Mr. Jewison who gave so much in the image/wardrobe area.

many years before Ivan Boesky made being a risk arbitrageur a dirty word, there was no cooler life than that of Thomas Crown.
