  • In this unsponsored video, I will demonstrate the different sounds you can get from this Danelectro '56 short scale bass. This bass belongs to a local pro bassist friend of mine and I am very grateful for the chance to demo it for you.
    I have always gravitated towards Fender style instruments, both for appearances and also sonically. In this video, I will compare the sounds of this Danelectro in different situations/genres where I would otherwise reach for a Fender style bass. Will it change the sound and the vibe? Let's find out.
    Basses were recorded direct through a Line6 Pod Go with identical settings - my usual GK800RB model settings. Basses were level matched, but no EQ or compression was added in post. A spring reverb effect was added in the third playing example.

    This was a really great video/demo. Very informative. The tests with the different music/playing styles were a nice touch for sure. (Although, I have to say, when you were playing your beloved Hofner Club Bass, your smile made it very apparent which bass you preferred! Heh heh.) Thanks for this, Jonathan. Nice job, sir.

    Very nice demo Jonathan. Sounds pretty good to my old ears. Have you played a Squier Paranormal Rascal bass? I just picked one up and fairly impressed with it. Cheers from Utah

      Thanks for watching! I had a chance to play the older Rascal, green with lipstick strat-type config. I was really turned off by the heavy weight of it. Looked cool though. Haven’t tried the newer paranormal one yet.

    Thanks. Bit of hum but surprising sustain. The Hofner did have a cool sound.

    Huge Dano fan here! I have the Longhorn Bass, Longhorn Baritone, Hodad Bass (changed to Piccolo), '59 Guitar in Thunderbird Pink,
    and '56 Baritone (bottleneck). That '56 is on my list:) Rosewood bridge is a challenge . . .

    Great sounding bass, I wasn't expecting to like it so much. Did you experience any neck dive? How's the weight? Thanks

    • @jonathanwong458music
      @jonathanwong458music  7 месяцев назад +4

      It’s a cool vibey bass! Won’t replace my usual go tos, but it exceeded my expectations for sure! It’s super light, under 7 lbs and the small tuners made this one balance well without neck dive.
      Thanks for watching!

      Interesting instrument!
      General shape, layout, controls and sound remind me of my Gretsch G2220.
      Maybe I should consider rewiring the toggle switch middle position to series instead of parallel, that's a really cool sound!

    • @jonathanwong458music
      @jonathanwong458music  7 месяцев назад +2

      It’s a bigger, louder sound (in series). Put in a switch that allows you to toggle between parallel and series for max versatility!
      Thanks for watching!

    That's a gorgeous color...I used to have a longhorn bass in blackburst, it was certainly unique...but to be quite honest I don't really miss it

    For the country sample the Hofner is the clear winner for me. Nice clear overtones. Compared to the Fenders the Dan sounds almost like you are playing with a pick. Interesting dynamic.

    Nice bass, sounds very convincing to me, especially with the drums! Did you notice any tuning instabilties with the lightweight tuners? They don't look very stable from my perspective. Thank you!

      The tuners appeared on the flimsy side. The bass stayed in tune during my recordings, but unsure how tuning would hold up on stage or being banged/thrown around on the road though….

    Thanks as always, Jonathan. I see many more Longhorns in the wild available used. Do you have any thoughts on how the models compare, especially with respect to tone?

      I have not yet played a longhorn bass, so I’m not sure. It strays even further from a FSO! (Fender shaped object) haha! Thanks for watching!

    Great bass. Is it a solid body or a semi hollow body ?
    Hello and Happy new year from the other side of the pond

    • @jonathanwong458music
      @jonathanwong458music  7 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks for watching! Tapping the body, it doesn’t sound fully solid as it has a bit of a hollow, higher pitch ‘boing’ over a lower pitched ‘thud’. However, it is advertised as hardboard and plywood. So I suspect it is not a true semi hollow body as we would think of one. Maybe it’s voids or several pieces put together? Good question! I don’t know the answer, unfortunately.
