Misty Landscapes | ILFORD PAN F PLUS | Mamiya 7 II

- I woke up to misty conditions outside and headed to my local woods on Southborough Common with my dog Barney. There were a few trees that I had wanted to photograph with these conditions, so this morning looked like the perfect day.
I used my Mamiya 7 II medium format camera with a roll of Ilford Pan F Plus black and white film. I'd not used it before but knew of its fine grain, sharpness and high contrast and it didn't disappoint.
Most of the photos were taken on a tripod due to the low light and slow speed of film. Some of the exposures over a second long needed extra exposure and for this, I checked the Ilford reciprocity failure chart for this film.
I developed the film in Ilford ID11 (1+3) for 15 minutes.

It’s so refreshing to watch a slow pace video with no long introductory blar. Great photos and who cares about background noise and a couple of drops of water on the lens. Life’s not perfect
thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it
I'm a big believer in abstaining from apologising in vlogs. Most people don't even notice. Most people also don't care that there may have been an issue anyway. We're not filming with a load of people who have assigned roles, we're doing it all ourselves. The imperfection is part of the reason we watch.
You're probably right in that people won't notice but I don't think it hurts to get across some of the frustrations of how these things are made. Cheers Jeff.
Craig Prentis I on the other hand worked in TV shooting videos for 35 years, so I appreciate you giving a heads up if you had an issue, specially with the audio. It is very annoying when you hear bad audio, for me is enough not to continue watching.
Keep up the nice work! Beautiful photos, thank you.
I think Barney enjoys your photowalks even more than you do. Thank goodness for misty days.
Craig Prentis and Zenography = the ASMR of photography channels :)
Thanks, I like a bit of Zenography too.
Very, very enjoyable presentation. Thank you so much. RS. Canada
Wonderful photos! And Barney's such a great dog!
Internet is a weird place. You search for videos on a film you are meaning to shoot, discover a video which you very much enjoy, decide to look through the other videos posted by the same person, and within 5 minutes realise both him and his great dog have passed away. RIP both.
Barney stole the show 😉
Great video! I loved all of the images. I also like that there’s no music in the video the used nature sound was great!
thanks Miguel, yes, I try to keep the music to a minimum. I prefer natural, ambient sound.
Miguel beat me to it. I like that there's no punchy music, and that you include mostly just the ambient sounds of where you are shooting. Makes for a very calm and zen approach that a lot of people don't do. And, now I also want to give this film a try in my Rollei. Thanks!
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it
Go Barney !! Slick vid as always Craig !
I understand what you mean about the ambient traffic noise. On the other hand the church bells were a nice background addition. As to the photos themselves, two stand out in my mind: the hawthorn with wire fence and, of course, Barney.
Yes it's the road and airplane noise (I'm on a flight path) that I could do without. I don't mind the church bells. Thanks for watching.
Terrific
I love that you use a spot lightmeter. Most of “photographers” will never learn how to use it.
I went to the CCC , here in México, and the "students" don't really care much about learning how to use it.
Pretty well explained your video, thank you very much for your dedication and passion.
Thanks, I find that using a meter is just part of my analogue process and helps me understand what's going on in a scene.
Love your dog.
Hi Craig, I discovered your channel yesterday and now I'm binge watching all of your videos. I am amazed by all of your images, especially the ones in the fog. I love that you talk so much about composition and exposure, you really teach a lot. Would love to see more videos!
Enjoyed watching this and seeing the pictures. Who cares about the sound, I quite like hearing the background noise.
thanks for watching
Absolutely brilliant photography. Pan F is a difficult film to use in a high dynamic range scene but it seems to have suited the lighting in the woods. Well done.
thank you
Thank you, excellent video
Wow that shot at 4:07 was fantastic. 👏
The last shot of Barney is wonderful!
Thanks for sharing Craig. Nice images, love the portrait composition of the rain drops. Take care
Beautiful images. Thanks for sharing
You’re incredibly talented, I’ve watched yours videos and about medium and large format film photography and they are a true pleasure to watch! Something truly refreshing and relaxing. Compliment!
stunning photos, especially of those (oak)trees in the beginning. over all nice tranquility. cheers.
Barney is awesome... such a sweet shot him at the end... Cheers Craig... loved those initial shots of the twisted branches also.
thank you, he's very happy to pose. Glad you liked the photos.
Brilliant images, so glad I found your channel today
It's always a pleasure to stumble upon a vlog that talks and guides the viewer through taking photographs, compositions and why makes a great photo. There are way too many so called photo vlogs that talks about camera gear, bokeh, dynamic range, noise, why a zillion pixel camera is the best thing since sliced bread, etc. They are really boring as photography is about what you do. Keep it up and I've subscribed to your channel!
t Lim thank you, it’s good to know there are people out there ‘stumbling across’ the channel and enjoying the content. Much appreciated.
This has to be one of my favorite channels, great video quality and incredible photos. I love how you keep everything simple and explain what you are doing and planning for each shot.
Thank you very much. I'm pleased you're enjoying the videos.
Stuck indoors, so thought I’d revisit some classic videos... just to say that last shot of Barney was exquisite, Craig.
Stay well, matey
Steve Mac.
Really enjoying these, Craig. Thanks for taking us along on your journey.
Thanks Michael, much appreciated.
Thanks Craig. I really enjoyed this.
thank you
Nice one! Especially the first shots with the twisted branches looked absolutely beautiful! Love the calmness of your videos and the sounds of the nature.
Alexander Matragos thank you, I’m glad you enjoyed it
Amazing work!!!
I love the shots and I love your dog. Amazing both
Have a off day from work and binging on all your videos. Cheers!
Rich Forthestar excellent, love the idea of you binge-watching my videos!
Great video, beautiful photos, nice dog :) Thanks.
thanks very much
Great job on this video. I love the photos too. Love Barney more!
thank you, I'm glad you liked it
This is pure dope...😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍✌️✌️✌️✌️✌️✌️✌️✌️✌️
Loved ur shoots...
Hey Craig, just wanted to stop by, and say great photos!
Loved the image at 5:51. Beautiful contrast and composition. The image of your dog was another great image. All were good, those two were my favorites. Thanks for sharing
Thank you Tony
That’s a really lovely location Craig. The early shots inside the woodland area with the dense fog all looked great. Some really interesting branches on those trees. Thanks for sharing another calm and relaxing video. 😁😎
Hi Diego, I hoping for lots more of that over the coming months. Thanks for watching.
Doggie is sooooo cute ❤️
thanks
Thank you very much for the calm video, I really enjoyed it. The images with the twisted brunches I like the most. Just love b&w. Well done.
Thank you for watching, I'm glad you enjoyed it.
I love your videos Craig, you created some lovely images, and what a beautiful image of Barney!
thanks Andrew, much appreciated
Great job! Your video and the photos both look amazing!
Another very enjoyable video as I look out my back window on a very wet Sunday morning.
Glad you enjoyed it
I use my pan F to photograph trees also. It's exposure latitude allows highlights and good detail in the shadows in our bright Florida light. I use a baby Grafic and a 6x6 back. I meter through the camera and add enough f stops to make up for the loss through the ground glass.
Awesome composition. Enjoyed your work
This combo with that film is spectacular. Also, your compositions are beautiful. Well done brother.
Great, thanks for watching.
Beautiful shots and video!
Beautiful! I really enjoy your videos and images. I appreciate that you’re photographing your local landscapes, sites, and buildings. That is how I make pictures. It’s very nice to see someone capturing the subtle beauty around them. Also-Barney is great!
Thank you. Everyone likes a trip to a well known beautiful location but I'm determined to find images in my local area. Sometimes, I think you have to work harder when the surroundings are so familiar. I'll pass on your message to Barney ;-)
Love the branch shots!
Excellent - thanks a lot for sharing! Really fun to watch those walks with Barney! That Mamiya 7 looks like a solid machine to work with.
Yes, the Mamiya 7 is lovely to work with. Thanks for watching!
Just found your channel as a RUclips recommendation. Lovely images, and it's nice to see film in use. As for Barney, what a lovable pooch!
NeilT good to have you along. Glad you liked it and I’ll pass your comments on to Barney!
That dog portrait is gorgeous. And he is such a good boy. Mine always closes his eyes right before I click (on purpose, I tell you!) : )
Great stuff. I love the twisty trees.
me too, can't beat a twisty tree
No need for apologies Craig - don't think anyone would have noticed any sound issues , well I certainly didn't :) Very enjoyable as always and a couple of stand out images for me - loved the image at 5.50 with the large tree, the tree in the background seemed to be replicating the main subject, nice. Also the hawthorn and the fence, in mono it could have been taken any time in the last 50 years - timeless. To end the roll with a shot of Barney was perfect, great shot too.
Hi Alan, I’m glad you didn’t find the audio too jarring. I like using ambient sound but I could have done without the car noises - it didn’t really fit with the ambiance of the woodland. I like the shots you mentioned too and yes, misty shots have a timeless quality to them. Thanks for your comments.
Very nice, really enjoyed the video. Beautiful picture of a beautiful creature.
this is an incredible channel, well thought, professional, pleasant and calming. Thank you
Thank you Alessandro, much appreciated.
Very nice serie of b/W photos, love them!
thanks very much
Love your dog!
a pleasure as always
thanks you
Also your dog is quite the little model! My dog would never sit so still for a photo
Yes, he's happy to pose ;-)
I'm coming late to your channel but I especially loved the image of the hawthorn tree with the leading fence and the one of the dog, although he looked frozen :)
Thank you
Great last pic of the dog. Just lovely
runninblue thank you, I’ll pass the message on to Barney
Really liked the photos. Lived the character of the film, need to buy a roll and try it. Great contrast and sharpness. And Barney is always fun to watch. Enjoy and learn from your content as always. Good work.
Great, I'm pleased you are getting something out of it, Martin. Pan F is a lovely film.
I enjoyed your intro this week. Nice touch! You took a nice set of images on this trip! They were all good, but I especially liked the first one. I wish we had such nice "soft" days but we just don't get fog that often where I live & mainly shoot. Overcast days just aren't the same. Good video! You gave a lot of information as to the thinking behind your compositions.
Great, thanks John, I'm glad you enjoyed it. I wish we got a bit more fog down this way but I'll be getting out whenever I can in these conditions as I love the look it provides.
Lovely and helpful video Craig - I'm always interested in the thought process behind your exposures. Thanks for this!
Great, I’m glad you enjoyed it.
Love B&W, good job Craig
Thanks Brian
WOW.
Hi Craig, A lovely relaxed style & gorgeous film, I especially like the image at 5:06 to me it almost looked 3d great separation. Of course, the best image was saved till last, the one of Barney.
Thank you Tom, I'm glad you enjoyed it and the shot you mentioned. I'll pass your comments on to Barney ;-)
Nice set again Craig. 1/3/ and last are lovely
Travel Hopefully Photography thank you
I enjoyed the ambiance of the traffic noise.
Great photos man!!
Hey Craig, very fortunate to have found your channel. Thoroughly enjoyed watching your process and Barney of course, had a cocker for nearly 18 years myself
Cheers, I'm glad you found the channel. I always bring Barney along if I can.
great photos I realy enjoy your style .Real photography
Thank you
The images are incredible.
thanks
wonderful images Craig! love the portrait of your dog
cheers, that proving to be a popular photo!
Great video! Nice relaxed style and wonderful shots. I love Pan F :)
thank you
A very enjoyable video Craig, something magical about film and its a refreshing tonic fro Dslr. Thanks for sharing, the tones of the black and whites are just awesome, coupled with great compositions
Bearded Bushcraft thank you, yes I get a lot more enjoyment out of shooting on film than on digital. Glad you liked it.
Good eye, solid composition and some wonderful fog. I am now subscribed.
thank you
Very nice images Craig and great to see the use of film. Brings back memories from when I done a course on photography at School many, many years ago where we got to shoot with B&W film and process it all from start to finish. Very satisfying process and to see your image come to life in the tanks is something I will always remember.
Thanks Ray, yes I started with film at college and have gone back to it all these years later. I must admit I love the processing bit afterwards and seeing the film appear out of the tank. I hope to be able to darkroom print at some stage but for now, scanning and inkjet printing is good enough for me.
Some of the shotgun microphone audio almost contributed to the ambience :)
I do know what you mean, John. Just frustrated to not have the cleaner audio on my early-on talky bits.
Renegade Scot::::: Brings back the time when all i used was film, Transparencies and lots of B&W.
I use to go out in the marshes and woods in the morning and evenings in Florida.
Sold my Darkroom years ago and yes i miss it as well.
Digital has it's advantages.
One, you're your own processor without all the chemicals and time.
Two, speed we can get cleaner shots never achieved with film at higher ISO.
And three you're not dealing with rolls of film and film backs.
Does this make me excited?
Not actually, but it has become the new speedy format for lots of Pros, and so many people feel they have become pros.
For me the truth of film and skills in the darkroom is what made a good to great photographer, having that knowledgeable eye at the magic moment is always going to be the main ingredient.
But i haven't seen a photo lately that made me go wow, without it being over-hyped with software.
What would Galen Rowell be using today?
Ever notice how technology with it's speediness that was suppose to give us more time to do things has actually taken time away?
This is my personal opinion so take it for whats it's worth.
Film is beautiful.
Love your page! Very inspiring.
Thanks Shawn
Beautiful photos, peaceful video, interesting info (slow speeds, reciprocity) and darned cute dog!
Thank you and I'll pass on your comments to Barney ;-)
I really enjoy watching your videos ! Very nicely produced, inspiring, mature. Your photographs are also very inspiring. Thank you for sharing your work! Looking forward to the next ones. Arnaud
Thanks Arnaud, it's good to hear that you're enjoying them.
Great stuff once again Craig, first shot was my fav.
great, thanks for watching
Really it's so wonderful and speculative photographs, that's reflects the beautiful nature among the misty atmosphere, I'm so glad to see such an awesome and gorgeous photography, that I was felt specially an obstructive meaning that represents in curved lines of the branches beauty, Thanks Craig so much for your awesome creative Artwork.
Thank you Fathi, I'm glad you enjoyed it
Good work - perfect match camera, film and weather
roberto posa thanks, I’m glad you liked it
Your dog is absolutely adorable. Great pictures :)
he sure is ;-)
Great video.
these shots are supreme. great work.
subscribed
thanks very much
The shot at 4.09 is superb!
thank you
This is very peaceful. I like the video colours, so I’d almost like to see this again on colour stock. The contrast is excellent. It’s very interesting to see other styles of work. You really found some great compositions.
I think in time the talk to camera rhythm and tone will improve.
Also 10 points added for bringing the dog out.
✌️
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it. Always looking to improve.
Lovely work Craig.
thanks Mark
Really solid, interesting shots, Craig. What a great outing. The background on the audio was fine (though it felt a bit off, sync-wise, at times). I really liked a lot of your compositions and the dew drops shot turned out fantastic. Loved the shot of Barney :) Thanks for sharing with us.
Don Kittle thanks Don, that’s good to know and I’ll check the sync. It was the first vlog I’ve edited with DaVinci Resolve so it’s probably me moving bits around incorrectly on the timeline
That's a good boy !!!
he sure is!
The picture of your dog is amazing
cheers
wonderful vid, Iearnt a lot from it, thank you
First time i see a film of you! ow man you blew my away with your style ! see keep up the video;s!
