I love how it makes you question the morality. No one is truly right or wrong on the stance. Had he just grabbed the kid or barricaded the door instead of arguing they might’ve been able to save the kid and his wife, but in desperation you don’t you just act and he did survive. However his wife had the antibodies and had he saved her she might’ve been able to get a cure out sooner and he wouldn’t have paid for it in the end like he did. It’s really a toss up and you can see it so many ways. Was he right to preserve himself(wether it was for the kid or himself we truly don’t know) or save another and sacrifice. This is why I love the zombie genre.

With a house full of infected and loads more on the way, the dad made the right call at the beginning imo. It makes no sense to sacrifice yourself when everyone there is almost certainly dead anyway. At least one of the parents should do everything they can to survive for their kids.

I think the implication is that the kid infects the rest of Europe now. They fought so hard to save this kid because he's immune, never stopping to consider the risk he poses the world if he gets infected and things go wrong and he can pass off as a non infected because he's immune.
And that's likely what happened. After he became a carrier, even something like a cheeks kiss from his sister could potentially infect her. A sneeze, maybe. Or he could be getting a checkup from a nurse or doctor. Sympathy, unfortunately, allows a ticking time bomb to escape the UK.
This movie truly is a tragedy. It's a chain reaction from the moment the dad leaves his wife of the worst and best human characteristics, that lead to the worst outcomes.

    • @jayeisenhardt1337

The doc should had lock down and guards and full NBC suits required soon as she saw them bites. Infact why weren't they in suits the entire time? That's what they are for. She knew how important the wife was yet did nothing like she had no power. Nobody enters that room, shoot on site anyone trying to enter until they get a setup to figure things our and cure the world.
Then even working with it is so dangerous. I see why the general is gun ho but stupid. Listen to the doc but give her the code red protocol to cook her ass and the cure and the entire building soon as one thing goes wrong. They got civis walking around like they own the place too. The entire island on lock and willing to blow it but command HQ open without military escort? Where was the doc at? No thought of the danger of infection spreading when that lady is the only immune. That's just a few what if's and stupids of people who should know better as it's their field.

    • @jayeisenhardt1337

      More ranting . . .
Yet reality check as we seen how that has gone with incompetence and corruption. Bureaucrats refused to listen tor even allow the doctors to debate like they had it planned as their agenda was sent from god on high and it had to be followed no matter the risk. I've seen people ignore all dangers and just follow orders without thought. To even question had people acting nuts even after they found out some of the genetic sequence already had a patent on it. So I guess it all is believable. People are just that dumb no matter where they are at in life.
I shoulda known too. General or doctor. I've seen it enough but still think people are like me and I'm like them. Some in the comments maybe but I've tried to get high level professionals from multiple disciples to work as a team before and it's just as hard as herding cats or any yahoo off the street. It can be done but you get the same facepalm moments you'd think shouldn't happen.
Even seen the Pope have to deal with some rival denominations or something as if they were children competing for his affection or just to twist words trying to be called favorites. Sometimes it feels like nobody in the world ages past 12. I'm sure I can be the same way you just gotta find whatever it is that makes me so.

    • @sriver004
      @sriver004 2 года назад +14

@@aj897 well yes but the point of the ending, what it is showing, is that the kid himself IS the reason the virus has spread to France.
It was, up until this point, contained to the UK. So the tragedy of the movie is that everyone tried to get the cure, this kid, to safe hands and it ends up being a catastrophe. He likely infected his sister or someone close to him hy accident, so likely the cure is dead.
Everything about the ending is ominous. Its not hopeful. More a showcase of failure due to one of the most human of feelings: sympathy. The friend of Jeremy Renner's character takes the kid on board not knowing he's dooming an entire continent. And the sister doesn't say anything because she doesn't want to lose her brother. Fear, probably the most human of feelings.

The first movie set up an interesting question: could the virus ever cross an ocean? It seems unlikely because of the speed of infection. It’s hard to imagine a pilot taking off as people are biting each other onboard his plane and then calmly flying to his destination.
This movie explains one way it could happen. The mother was immune to the virus, but she still carried it and could spread it to others. When her husband kissed her he became infected and started the outbreak all over again. Then he spread it to his son, who like his mother is immune but can still spread it. In an effort to learn about the virus and develop a cure or a vaccine he’s transported to France. Some simple mistake happens, and the son spreads the virus to someone else. Maybe somebody shares a glass with him. And now all of Europe, Asia and Africa will probably be infected soon.

There's the possibility of the infected overrunning the tunnel that goes under the English Channel to France? That's one way for the virus to potentially make its way to continental Europe and beyond. Though I think it could be slowed by the time the outbreak reached further inland in like Germany or Switzerland.

Also when I first watched the movie I assumed the implication was the infected who'd escaped London had run all the way through the channel tunnel into France but that is very implausible because it's like 50km and there's no way the French wouldn't have seen them coming.

I liked this one better than “28 Days Later”. It was creepier, to me.
I didn’t really blame the father (not as much as I did the kids)…if memory serves, he wouldn’t have been able to save his wife had he stayed or run back. He would have surely died. And, the guilt was killing him.
(I mean, if I was in the same ship, and it was, like, my mother being attacked…I would def be dead trying to save her.)
Again, if memory serves, I think I blamed the kids for the infection getting into the safe zone. If they hadn’t behaved like spoiled brats, breaking the rules and going past the border, the infection wouldn’t have made its way inside the safe zone. The kids had been there, what, one night…? And they brought death to everyone who lived there and followed the rules. Did the kids ever realize and acknowledge and feel bad about that?

Putting everyone else in jeopardy. Like, wait until after the freaking virus has passed. The pictures will prob still be there.
Although, I can’t remember…was there also a pet they went back for? Because that would make a lot more sense and I could understand that better than pictures.

Haha this is one of my favorite childhood movies 🥰 This reaction was fantastic, can't wait to see more!
I like how you have pointed out how the virus as a seeming metaphor, especially with our main characters' family. It's really fun to break it down in the context of toxic family dynamics and/or toxic individualism (or whatever their professional terms are). I'm thrilled that you hate Don as much as I do.
In a family unit where one parent has the most power, oftentimes that power can be mishandled and misguided. The external power in this series with the most influence is the Rage Virus, obviously, and this means the most dangerous character is the father. He wields this infection like a hammer to be a malignant force on his own family. He's selfish in the most individualistic way, and in this series that means he's unredemptive. Selfish characters are fun to explore, there's a whole range of them to pick a flavor. Depending on the universe, they're either loved, celebrated, tolerated, or hated. We were asked to hate this selfish man and find his actions deplorable 🥰 and i will 🥰
Selfish people can still prioritize their families in hard times--he did not. He used his family as a cover for his individualistic selfishness and when they were no longer useful to him, he abandoned them and then tried to kill them.
Unlike one infected father we've seen in this series (that guy from 28 Days Later i forgot his name lol 🙈), he tries to protect his daughter from himself all the way to the end of his consciousness. He's sympathetic even when he's a threat to the group ❤. There was none of that tragic heroism with this movie's father. The dad here is actively seeking out his family to harm them!
The first victim of his 😡rage😡 is his wife: he abandons her when she needs him most to further his own agenda (self-preservation); and then runs back to her for forgiveness (self gratification), where he immediately kills her after he's infected (self gratification). And while the case can be argued that as 🤕infected🤕 he did not willingly choose to murder his wife, he, while under this terrible influence, still killed his wife in a very drawn out, horrific way that is distinctly different from how most infected kill their victims. 🙈He pushes his thumbs in her eyes and then beats her to death🙈 That's not a standard way to die in this series! He had chosen this way to end his wife!! As the person who's supposed to be on equal footing with her own husband, it's clear that he did not care about her life as his own. He's a muderous hypocrite, she deserved to at least die divorced.
He's shown that when times are rough, he chooses himself at the detriment of his marriage, and this directly affects his relationship with his kids. He continues to wear his wedding ring to show that he's "widowed" to gain sympathy from the part of his life that isn't uprooted (his kids are alive and ignorant of his choices) and this works out for him for a while... Until they find out that he lied. Your reaction was great at this part 17:22 . That's exactly how it was! He lied about his actions because he knew they were wrong! And when his kids pointed it out, he deflects and walks away. He would not have taken the initiative to be honest if he wasn't guilty, and even then he wants to apologize under the veil that he's a good father and husband and he was helpless in the sitiation.
When he's infected, all the people who were non-familial died by bites and he moved on like every other infected person. But when facing his TWELVE YEAR OLD SON, a not even a teenager kid, he stares him down like a predator, as someone who's t h i n k i n g about the pain he could inflict on his own child. We know how the rest of that scene played out, and it's clear that from this point forward he's not a mindless victim following the whims of this mind altering disease, he's using this destructive virus to hunt his kids because he wants to.
And he's successful for the most part. He kills his children's support network (Scarlet, and let's throw in Doyle there since this new wave of infection is Don's fault), traps them underground where he has the upperhand, and then attacks his son! He only stopped biting his son (a drawn out bite, once again non-standard way to die by infected), because his daughter reminded him about his wife so he was going to attack her instead.
This guy is the worst. I can't imagine being married to someone like that!! 🤮🤬🤬🤬
[Note: another Don-induced death that shows that he has some control over his muderous tendencies is Scarlet's. For some reason, he didn't bite her, and I'm willing to bet that it was because he wanted to be the only one that was hunting his family and didn't want competition]
On that end, I think you guys would really like reacting to 30 Days of Night and Silent Hill! 😝 Their both anxiety inducing and heart racing, I can't recommend them enough 💖💖💖

Heroes movies teached people what you can do any hero shit and get away with it cause you're immortal. But in reality you probably just die trying. So when movie do the realistic trope, showing despair situation where all you really can do except diying is run, people now considering it as a hated cowardness. Unreasonable mindless hero death is a choice of them, i guess, but somehow doubt what it's would really be thier brave actions in the horrifying reality.. hope not, and at least some of them will survive, not all bravely die in the one room. It's like toxic positivity, only toxic bravery, wich leads only to more unnecessary deaths))

Toxic bravery? I’m not sure that’s a thing. Hero’s show us what we should strive to be even if we do fail. And many hero’s are mortal and do fail. Here’s our problem, if he had made that decision to save his kids, or referenced that in any way, totally ok with it. What he did do, was abandon his wife, not because he wanted to save the kids but to save himself. He made an oath, before friends and family, and God, to protect that women, and to act TOGETHER, as a single unit till death. His failure to do that for seemingly selfish motives was our problem.
As far as toxic heroism? That’s not heroism, so there shouldn’t be such a thing. There is either heroism or not. If it’s “toxic” then it isn’t heroism

@@whitenoisereacts "Toxic bravery? I’m not sure that’s a thing." Sure it is, ever seen the backwards American flag? No retreat no matter what just mach straight into death because you can no longer use your brain and retreat. That's what is stands for. lol Regular flag is a field of blue on the left. The backwards, I've seen in black with the stars on the right. Upside down people use to signal distress even though that ain't official.

The “umm actually, it’s an ‘outbreak’ movie” people need to be shoved into a locker. If we’re going to get nit-picky about it then the only zombie movies are the ones pre-Night Of The Living Dead/The Last Man On Earth and are about Voodoo-style zombies.
Australian zombie movie that I would recommend is the Netflix film Cargo. Fantastic film, stars Martin Freedman (plays Watson in the BBC Sherlock series w/ Benny Cumberbatch and was Bilbo in the Hobbit movies.)
The intro to 28 Weeks is great, but it kind of starts to fall apart in the third act. Harold Perrineau (Lost and Romeo + Juliet,) and Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker, Arrival, & The Avengers,) are better in the film than I had anticipated when I originally saw it.
Robert Carlyle is great as usual, since it seems like y’all aren’t as familiar with him I highly recommend checking out the Horror-Comedy Ravenous (1999,) Period, Action-Comedy Plunkett & Macleane (1999,) & the infamous Irvine Welsh adaptation Trainspotting (1996, Danny Boyle also directed 28 Days Later, BTW.)
Anyway, 28 Weeks Later is a great allegory for the occupation in Iraq, (notice the prominent use of the term “green zone”,) but I also think that may have harmed the film a bit. Americans occupying London and messing that up as well doesn’t project the good vibes people going to the theater looking for an escape would’ve wanted.
Then again, it was a pretty bad year for Horror in general. 2007 brought us most notably George A. Romero’s Diary Of The Dead, (the found-footage, 5th installment of his Dead series,) and the first of the Rob Zombie Halloween reboot movies.
I think something that people probably got turned off by was that even if his wife was immune [to rage *rolls eyes*] wouldn’t the infected have torn her apart anyway?
Also, that “how did he get in” & “I didn’t expect that to work out so well,” moments, they had me like, “really?!” 😒 when I first watched it as well.
I also think the end annoyed a lot of people.
I think you’re definitely meant to believe they spread the “Rage” into France, (how far from the British Isles do you expect their helicopter to fly?”
Anyway, if you were to watch any one of the films I mentioned here, I would say Ravenous over and over again, it’s worth it.
Let me try and sell it with this log-line: Civil War era, frontier cannibals.
( Maybe try gaming the algorithm by using hashtags for films the actors in the movie were in: Lost, Trainspotting, Scream, Ferris Bueller, How High, Band Of Brothers, What If, Memento, Prometheus, etc. 🤷🏻‍♀️ )
*Just crossed my mind but George A. Romero’s The Crazies is another film similar to this in that it is about the government’s response to an outbreak that causes people to go crazy-Not an “outbreak” movie in that there’s a zombie-like thing that is technically an outbreak but just an outbreak, lol.
2008’s The Happening is basically The Crazies meets Day Of The Triffids (book, not film,) both being very influential on these genres.

There's a Spanish "zombie" movie called REC (like the record button on a video camera), and a US remake called Quarantine.
Either one is good as they're basically the exact same movie, except for one being in English and the other in Spanish.
Also, it's been so long since I've seen this movie that I didn't even realise that Heimdall was in it.

Not sure if the word red herring is right but the scene of showing the son eyes and the medical officer saying “it’s hereditary” meaning it’s genetic and later see the mom not turning, you think the son is immune too. It isn’t at the end since it’s slowly spreading but he isn’t immune.
The ending isn’t clear but assumingely the helicopter piloted either need to refuel, head to check point or something happened with the son with it being blatant what happened. He, the boy and his sister are infected and turned. With them in France now or basically the mainland of Europe they now can spread it to other countries since it isn’t contained like the island of England/Scotland.
The letter that says for dad assumingely the sister went truly insane, knew what was gonna happened but let it happening since to her it’s pointless now.

All it takes is him coughing to hard in her direction and she turns and kills him or spits on the pilot dude and we right back in it.
