I admit, that is me a lot of times, but I get so bored of defending and then lose my mind and start rushing every ball handler. I still am in old fifa defense mode.
Great game but defending is atrocious and frustrating. I cant tackle any one. If i lose possesion then they will run the whole length of the pitch and score everytime. Impossible to defend. Already broke 1 controller and my tv stand. My tv has a shoe print in it.

I just switched back to fifa 17 and what a difference...player switching is fast and the players movement is very smooth even the graphics in 17 is much better..wtf did EA do this year downgrade fifa 17?

The contain button isn't just holding the button, you can also move the left analog stick just like with jockey movement. The difference is that contain button is like semi-assisted while jockey is manual contain. That's why jockey is so hard.

i could be wrong about this, but it seems like there is a difference between tapping and holding the stand tackle button for a second. at first i would always hold it for a second before releasing out of habit and it was such a looooooong horrible animation, but when i tap it, it feels like it used to.
I got back to FIFA 17 just to compare the feel of both and boy what a difference...17 is much smoother and faster, will get back to 18 and practice harder...although I haven't noticed a problem with defending in FIFA 18 career mode...which I find odd
maybe the server connection is the problem? the servers may be a bit loaded for fifa 18 which could potentially be causing a little more button lag. idk but that makes sense to me lol

Just use the contain and control them with the left joystick,it works just like the jockey movement and the defender chases the ball if the opposing player sprints away

yes it jokey movement is for to understand the move of you opponent press second teammate button at the same time, he will get distract while you are pressing jokey plus teammate button, but don't press teammate button near with box it will allow him to get chance to enter the box and he can score

in squad battes for me i always fell like im dominating and having the ball in and around their box a lot, but every time i give the ball up in their box or close to their box, their counter attacking ability is absolutely ridiculous and its on world class difficulty so not the best difficulty but it still just feels undefendable!!!

Formation 5-2-1-2 covers all areas, midfield ia solid(I use CMs only not CDMs here), got wing backs overlaping, 3 defenders, CAM to feed 2 strikers..pure gold!!

MOIZ BROHI If opponent is running then I guess you can go for running jockey by moving and pressing RT and LT at the same time. It helps sometimes.
And if you think you have almost lost control of the player then press A for just a second.
For interceptions you can also use the contain button which is much more effective
Press and hold the contain button when you see a loose pass

hi i am playing the game in pc and use keyboard to play the game. i need defending tips in the pc version. Below are the keys I am using
a > lob pass, slidding tackle
s > short pass
d > shoot, press the player
f > sprint
e > fineese shot modifier
w > switch player

Thanks mate.. the formation tactics works for real for real however I prefer playing using more of the wings and bursting through .. now am gon pass the ball into the net or shoot from long range
its not hard, it just doesn't work. Even well timed tackles give away goals

My biggest ability in FIFA has always been defending. Fifa18 took me somewhere i have never been. Im old school and never rely on special abilities or trick buttons. My game is simple but effective. Now im here because i cant defend if my life depended on it.

The key this year is controlling angles to limit your opponents options. In the midfield, your job is to limit passing options. At your goal, your job is to limit shooting options. Teammate contain/support in your goal is more dangerous in FIFA 18 because there are a lot more passing lanes open in the penalty box, so I'd only use that option if you have superior numbers in the box. It is important to be aware of the space on the pitch and to watch out for opponents making runs into space. The "width" instruction in Tactics is going to be important this year.

Defending is harder in fifa18
Yup and it's driving me insane. It's all good making it hard to defend but it means the game is always gonna be a goal-fest. I always seem to lose by 1 goal, and it's a big score line like 4-3 or 5-4. There's no balance in the defending mechanics and it's really annoying.
i love the defense. the only things that NEEDS to change are the keepers... every single low driven shot goes in no matter how accurate it is... it is a joke. the keeper regardless of rating does the same horrific animation where they just hop in place and stick one arm out horizontally a meter off of the ground... the shot always goes right underneath them.
Defending is since fifa17 my big problem...today i played against my brother, after first half it was 4:1 for me but then it ended 6:4...i always get so many goal when my defenders are out of stamina....

Ovvy- Do you use turbo a lot while defending? I have a habit of doing so and find that I overrun attackers a lot and miss tackles, but then if I don’t use it I get burned w/pace 🤷🏻♀️
Reading all theese comments about how hard defending is make me laugh it remind me of Fifa 12 when they introduce the tactical defending to date FIFA 12 is my favorite cause that's whas revolutionary to finally work and construct a good defending tactics being alert making your cdm track back and I feel this Fifa brought it back defending is a key part in football and you have to master it like attack also I like that you have to use your brain and not just put a human wall in front of the player like this Fifa you have to put ur CB on their good foot anyway I'm also working on understanding it too but i like the idea hope everyone will figure this out soon
Attack and defense are unbalanced on this game. The players dont react when is needed. This is a football game not a chess game. Fifa used to be fun, now is just unbearable.

Hey Ovvy. Thanks for putting in the effort and making this tutorial. But this is no different from a generic defending tutorial that works for fifa 17 as well. Maybe with more games to follow, you can create a better defending tutorial specific to fifa 18 talking more about the new powered tackle (how much power to put in the tackle in various situations), which Auto switching move assistance (controller setting) works better for defending etc. Also, I noticed that Contain button in combination with the sprint button seems very overpowered this time specially inside your own penalty box with the AI opponent (haven't tested this with human opponent yet).
I may have even better suggestion. Modify player change to airballs and just fill up the gaps by your own and team contain. Though the agression might not be high but your defence will always be organised.
Moreover the suggestion you gave to jockey but without contain will be of no use when the opponent does one fake shot.

pes is also bad with defending. sadly those games are all about fancy driblling and scoring. while for many ppl defending is even more fun, especially those who played as defenders in real life and admire legendary italian defence style

It took me far too long to figure out you have the controls at 2:45 switched. It shows the PS button mapping on the XBOX controller and vice versa. Been here hitting the wrong buttons on my PS and all like "WTF is an LT"?! D:

I found out that i personally defend better with a 442 because of the structure it provides.
