  • The Basque terrorist organization ETA is a thing of the past. But be they behind bars or walking around in freedom, the treatment of former ETA members is controversial and divisive.
ETA waged a violent struggle for an independent Basque country for over 50 years, killing more than 800 people in the process before finally disbanding in May 2018. But what has become of ETA’s former members and supporters now that it no longer exists? Two hundred and twenty one of them are currently still in prisons across Spain and their families are demanding their transfer to jails in the Basque Country itself. But that would only be the first stage: They are also calling for their release in the foreseeable future. But many victims of ETA violence are against any relaxation of prison conditions even if the organization is now defunct. At the same time, however, more and more prisoners are returning to society after serving their sentences. In the Basque Country, with its nearly 2.2 million inhabitants, they often end up living next door to people who suffered in ETA’s terror campaign. This documentary poses the question: What future peaceful coexistence?

DW has good docus, this is not one of em. The problem could be the title. When i clicked it i was expecting a general docu about the issues between spain and the basque trough history. Not something about the aftermath in present day.
The docu says ETA killed around 800 people, okay, why ? Just having a bad day that its mention it so casually? Maybe they says something about it, but its not enough to qualify as "documentary" worthy. Maybe if you think MTV has quality shows you also think this good.
And then the woman they follow. Sorry, but that angle didnt made it work for me. Because... what does she tell what isnt obvious? Except for marrying a guy in jail, she got to learn through letters(didnt expected that). Or maybe thats just the most exciting basque wive they could find..... this docu also tries to paint the guy in jail as innocent. Like, he only set a "bank machine" on fire in a riot and the law framed him for having ties to ETA.
Im presented with nothing to become sympathetic to ETA (or their causes). Yeah, sure, present day struggles and spain just bullies them.
Watched 19 mins, cannot imagine the last 6 will turn everything around (spent some time editing my comment, finished docu, prediction was correct).
Maybe not such a general title when the subject is very specific (if i google ETA, this story wont be dominating the presented information i suppose)
I also can be less salty, thats correct.

If this docu (or that woman) wants my empathy, i need more. She didnt knew the guy before prison... so, how is she (or the ETA question) mistreated? When the docu tells you how many have died, its allmost like it happens everyday and needs no further explanation.

My wife is Guatemalan and said the ETA are terrorists from what they saw in the news in her country. She didn't know about Franco and the torture and unlawful arrests of Basques that occurred. So I was intrigued that there was a flip side that even she didn't know about. Guatemalans for obvious reason follow Spain in many aspects. This docu shows the side that the Spanish government stopped from getting out. They censored media from Basque Country. I don't feel for that women specifically. However from knowing some history of the Kurdish people and knowing their suppression as well as attempted genocide (still ongoing), it leads me to believe the Basques are in a similar boat with how Franco kidnapped and beat them. That info is accessible by simply typing "franco Basques." It goes into detail about several European countries abandoning trade and political ties with Spain for their treatment of the Basques. I back the violent reaction of anyone who watches their priests dragged from church and beaten for 6 days. Or their friends and family dragged from their home or a bar and beaten for days without probable cause.

What a stupid and indecent statement! So, if you do someone wrong in life, it is not your fault, but someone others' because they caused that reaction on you, right? Wow man, that is believing in personal responsability! Typical leftist, unfortunately! - And as to the subject here, Spain's main fault was (and still is) being too kind and benevolent towards the nationalists like when Spain created regional Parliaments and Goverments to try to satisfy nationalists and calm them down. Instead, they did not only say as much as thank you, but managed to climb within those new Administrations and used their powers (specially schools... and public televisions) to spread their nationalist ideology of hatred against Spain and the all too generous Spanish people.

Very surreal watching this while wondering why I've never heard of the group ETA until today. I've lived in the U.S. for many years. ETA in English always translates to "estimated time of arrival" rather than a Basque separatist group. And the only separatist movement from Spain I've ever heard of was the Catalon's. And RUclips also never recommended me any docs or news vids about ETA all these years. I totally found out about this whole ETA Basque independence thing by accident while doing some unrelated internet research.

Basque should be separated a part from spain and not to stay with the force in country they are not part of historically. UN court should looked in to this. Also Basque may have or need to have parallel government so they can start the court case of separation. Matter of fact why some countries have another ethnical group where they tend to be in the shadow of the big er countries with No freedom of their own voice and we never here from them and sadently they comes up in this terrors attacks in news , where from the pressure a lot of innocent people get killed. All ethnicities who live in another countries as province or territory where are autochthonous, ancient historically and not happy with lawes of country thaier are in they should be free. ETA is created from struggle and wanting freedom.

Nationalists in Spain are still obsessed with Franco, the dictator who died 45 years ago. Particularly current nationalist teenagers who ironically never saw, met or experienced Franco's regime. This is the evidence of nationalist indoctrination in schools and public televisions... in some Spanish regions: Basque country, Catalonia, Galicia, Balearic Islands and Valencia region, particularly. Regional spanish kids and educational institutions stand out for their poor performance and skills and their rich leftist fanatism against the heart of Spain whose kids, ironically have the highest permormance and achievemt in school, even better than most european countries according to Pisa results. Whereas in the Basque country, for all the money, the kids there achieve very poorly, except at knowing the names of their terrorists heroes!

I doubt that. There is an insularity about the region and the people fairly close knit. On the other hand, their Jesuit and Opus Dei Schools are excellent examples of middle class union and progression. They make do with whatever limits they set.
You can't compare Madrid with Bilbao anyway. Any Capital in Europe has a higher concentration of the Intelligentsia, be it journalists or researchers, so those Capital communities will succeed regardless. Bilbao however being a Provincial Capital enjoys the spoils of Key Biscay, and the immigration attracted. The middle and upper class in either place identify cogently with one another and work well with whatever structures raised.
As for the poor indoctrination bit to it, that's mindless radicalism for you. They keep em ignorant and tied to the social group.

Let me explain: Spain is a country of numerous peoples. You have Galicians (who speak a language almost exactly equal as mine), Catalans (who are a distinct group with their own culture, identity and a language closer to franco-provençal) and the Basques (who existed even prior the roman empire, speak a language who is not even related to the indo-european languages and survided untill today). So you see, maintain all this peoples under one flag isn't easy. They tried to turn my country on another province of Spain twice and it almost worked for the second time, but it was a faliure after 60 years of ocupation. France isn't as problematic as Spain because since the france revolution they have crushed the non franco speakers so hard that after centuries its dificult to make even a revival, (Edit: I guess If Spain did the same thing today it would probably be condemned by the UN and the Amnisty International) but there are still some nationalists in Brittany, for example.

@@marvinsilverman4394 Exactly! My country formed a union with Spain for 80 years and it didn't work because they tried to opress us and castelhanize us, there is why my country still exists to this day, because the spanish government didn't respected our institutions nor our language or culture amd the same way they didn't respected the portuguese institutions, they don't respect other historic institutions and forget that Spain is not only made up of castillians and that the constant eforts to erase an entire people and a culture from history has one name: Genocide! if the basques, or the catalans, or even the galicians want be independent from Madrid, they have the right to do so it is one of the fundamental human rights of the UN constitution! There is a saying in my country wich we still keep saying since our revolution wich ended up the longest autoritarian regime in Europe: "O povo é quem mais ordena" - "The people is who most order".
