I was brought here out of curiosity since I found out most of my hometown (Medellin- Colombia) has Basque ancestry, so I am kind of getting to know more about my ancestors. Very interesting.
According to history the Vasque people used to go far away even to New Foundland in what is now North America (Canada) much before the discovery of the Americas, following cod and that is why they came out with the idea of salting the fish to preserve it...I have a book that speaks of this...
I am from Newfoundland and there is an island off where my family lives called Baccileu Island. All the cod came from the waters around Newfoundland. Salt cod was salted by my ancestors and shipped to Europe and the Basque whalers predate Gaspar Corte Real and the Portuguese explorers "discovering" Newfoundland. The Vikings were in NL, too.

Hello......Im from Mexico living in the USA.....my lastname is Verastegui....I look so basque that even ppl have asked me few times while walking on the streets if I'm Basque.....and YES I consider myself as a Basque person.....my dream is to go to the Basque country one day!!!! so proud of my Basque ancestrory!!
Aqua Dulce Your comment makes no sense. Basque people look basically the same to the rest of Spaniards and Southern French people.
@@arianam9977 sepa usted , qué los castellanos , son de origen vasco!!!
O los vascos castellanos.
@@arianam9977 like if there was any difference between southern and northern French people. Southern France is in europe, as well as Spain.
@@Nono-dk5hl Of course there is. Northern French people have more Germanic blood while Southern French people have more Iberian.
I have been watching Rick Steves' travel programs since they were on PBS.
Caucasians love the basgue people! With love from Caucasus!
I love all people...
Thank you Rick Steves, this is one of your best productions, and about a region that people know barely, me included. Thank you so much!

@@BradleyPitts666 Better salary and less unemployment.
versatil89 Oomph, sorry about the transition of food
Beautiful Basque and beautiful original segment that was put into his Monday night live travels.
9:53, the best food in Spain is from Basque Country and Andalusia!!!!!!! (i'm from bcn)
My one younger sister, and her eldest, her daughter, may have visited Baque territory, when the went to Europe, this summer. Keep up the good documentaries.
I was brought here out of curiosity since I found out most of my hometown (Medellin- Colombia) has Basque ancestry, so I am kind of getting to know more about my ancestors. Very interesting.
I'm Ecuadorian and my last name Carranza came from a province known as Basque
One of the best videos I have ever seen in many years 👆 informative 👍
I THINK I GOT THE ATTENTION OF THAT SHIP OVER THERE🔥🔥🗣️🗣️
Proud ta be of Basque descent from Alsace-Lorraine and Al-Andalus.
About the cod fish, also portugal does it this way! ~~ most likely learnt from the basque :D so interesting
This was a eye opening for me, I have been looking for something different to go on holiday, and this over the moon stuff 😮 for me thank you for this, iam making my over to see this for myself
Rick is a boss
correct
@9:31 Clock tower reads, "Earned through fidelity, nobility and loyalty".
Fidelity indicates faithfulness to one's duties, whereas loyalty indicates faithfulness to a person... in this case, probably the lord or king of the time.
I love Basque food! Bakersfield introduced me and now me and my family go every year.
Loved this travel review. Long live Rick Steves.
Just learn my Great grandpa was from here I want so much to learn all I can.
Thank you Rick….Have emailed this to a friend who is going there for a few days , at the end of this month(Toussaintes)..A great introduction for her .
I want to see the land of my people, ive lived my whole life in the cultural soup sandwhich of the US. And from what I see the land I came from is beautiful.

Love the Spain and especially the Basque videos. I will be visiting Spain this year and they will help with my itinerary. Excited to see where my grandparents were born and grew up! (Erratzu and Azpilicueta)
Basque country is in Spain and France.
Beautiful place. I'll add Basque to my travel list.
Euskadi es un lugar precioso con gente muy amable, espero volver pronto
For the next time you could aso learn some of the language that is supposed to be spoken here ;) I, at least, would appreciate it

I just recently discovered through my DNA that I am Basque. This was enlightening, thank you!
Amazing place. Thank you
Thank you for your great video. It is very helpful on my studying about the Bseque country. Take care of yourself during coronavirus pandemic.
woww.. i didn't know it, there is a country called Basque located between Spain and France. Thanks for sharing the wonderful video.
It is an Autonomous Community. Spain is divided in 17 of them.
@@jmtrevijano9160 no because basque country (euskal herri) is also in France (Euskal hirigune elkargoa). The autonomous community is euskadi which is a part of basque country (with navarra an other part)
It's a mistake. This guy is a fool.
Basque country is such a forgotten place in Europe, I'm glad to see this kind of content from someone who might live in the US (sorry for the mistake if you don't)
Difference between tapas and pintxos:
Both are extremely tasty, but Pintxos are usually High-End, more elaborate and expensive. With tapas you'll usually have more quantity (less elaborate), but equally good!
Very beautiful 😍 thank you for sharing!!
found out i am basque working on my ancestry i want to go home some day
Rich Allen same here
I did too!
Are you rh neg
im born in the usa my parents are cuban, my
great great grandfather on my fathers side.
was basque spiniard.
not claiming anything. just want to know
if i can claim heritage. or thats nothing.
@Fred Teall yeah that's what I thought. But I'm not interested in claiming that as much as I am interested as my nature , tends to identify with a Basque like personality.
Thank you. I enjoyed it very much.
My grandfather was born in Bilbao :)
I am here in San Sebastián now!!! I've studied them a bit over the last year but have not seen this video yet. it's 7am Saturday . gonna go out on a trail run and then check out the city for my first full day 1 .
We also have jai alai sport in philippines sometimes its televised. I was surprised that the basque country also play this kind of sports i guess we inherit this sports as well from colonization.
A lot of "Spanish colonizers" actually came from the Basque Region to colonize The Philippines
A very nice and complete video, pointing out several aspects of a complex society (they all are), good insights of the old and new, capturing a modern and vibrant society that at the same time strongly respects its roots, language, culture, food, wellbeing, respect for nature and hard work, do not forget Basque Country invests 2% in innovation, over the European average, and well over Spanish average.
"So tell me about this marijuanna store."
Exactly! lol...hmm, stoner Steves?
Hahaha I was like: Why would you show something that irrelevant when you are in the basque country?!
Nada que ver con el reporte, le da una imagen sucia y menos atractiva a esa Bella ciudad. 😡
Julio Lopez cuanta razón tienes
Lol, I have my apartment just across the street from the kaya weed shop.
❤23 and me … says I am 40% basque… I thought I was more ?… who cares ?… I really enjoyed riding my bicycle on the El Camino / La conche … and I surfed off season fun waves ❤
Maravilloso reportaje felicidades
Highest quality of everything in that place .... people , shops , nature ....
What an amazing country!
That's all I can say too!
is not a country is a place from spain
well I live in Pamplona and am in Euskadi at times and there are differences and things that are like anywhere else in Spain
WRONG. The Basque country is both in France and Spain.
Yes it is between France and Spain. However, the Basques , want to be a different country, so they still fight. I have been in there so i know about it.
