  • The Fleadh Nua, now in its 14th year in Ennis, gets bigger and better and is taking place over four days.
Concerts, stage shows, set dancing classes and a wide variety of street entertainment, make up the festival. The fleadh is financed largely by contributions made by local traders to Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann.
Seamus Ruane, one of the treasurers of the Fleadh Nua, spoke to RTÉ News about the expense of the festival and the challenge of raising the necessary funds.
The theme for the 1987 Fleadh Nua was our cultural environment, focusing on the preservation of Irish music, dancing, games, and literature. There was also an emphasis on street entertainment with the busking competition attracting a great deal of interest.
“The Fiddling Friar of the Fleadh Nua” was also in attendance to entertain the dancers on the streets of Ennis.
An RTÉ News report broadcast on 26 May 1987. The reporter is Michael Walsh.

So we all just going to pretend that's not Zach Galifianakis playing the fiddle 2 mins 16 secs in? Cool...

I was not there but if I had attended I would have danced up and down the streets in my old suede boots, the ones that I wore as my brother and I rambled around the street of New Orleans during the Mardi Gras festival, the ones I wore as I was marched out of the Almo in San Antonio, Texas at gun and bayonet point after the guards got upset as I took a photo of my brother as he stood up on the window sill so i could get a better photo, they had no sense of humor, I clime the prize over Ossy Osborne as he got arrested and fined, we got off free of charge, the same old suede boots wore as we were driven around L.B.J. ranch out in Johnston country in the large white car normally parked in its garage. Yes i would have danced down the streets of Ennis during the Fleadh Nua but I was not able to go, I still have my prized old suede boots and with luck someday I will fulfill my dream and go skilling, dancing, hopping, and sliding around the streets of Ennis at a musical festival

And if I see those same suede boots at the Fleadh Nua then I’ll buy you a pint of your favorite beverage in the hopes that I’ll hear some more of your fine stories!
