I've also recognised future Taoiseach, Liam Cosgrave, Tom O'Higgins (Minister for Health, Oliver J. Flanagan, (then Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Agriculture), Richard Mulcahy (Leader of Fine Gael and Minister for Education), Sean Mac Eoin (Minister for Defence)
This is the funeral of Bishop Michael Fogarty, who was Bishop of Killaloe from 1904-1955, the longest reigning bishop in modern Irish history. The funeral took place at Ennis Cathedral, attended by senior churchmen, and political leaders from the Present Sean T O'Kelly, to Taoiseach John A. Costello, Leader of Fianna Fail, Eamon de Valera, and former President of the Executive Council, W.T. Cosgrave.
Thanks very much for sharing this footage. This is very significant footage. I am of the opinion that this is Bishop John Dignan. Who died in April 1953. He was Bishop of Clonfert in which county clare is located. He knew Èamon De Valera personally from meetings in the 1940s. De Valera can be seen in attendance of his funeral in the footage. Bishop John Dignan also invited the Francisicains to open a hospital and gave them the land and they opened Portiuncula Hospital. He was a republican and his house was raided and bombed by the black and tans in 1921 while he was parish priest of loughrea. There is a large army presence and precession, and everything about the footage says Bishop John Dignan. It would be great if someone recognised the town. Also if anyone is able to put names to any faces in this video I would ve very interested . Especially if anyone can identify which bishop is which.

Good to see the Franciscans, keeping it simple.
