134. Return to Yelvertoft - Summer Narrowboat Cruise (Final Part Eight)

  • I moor up for the evening, having come through the Watford Staircase Flight. I awake next morning to another lovely sunny day, which is a calm and restful one after all the lock activity of previous days, allowing me to chill out and relax before 'returning to the beginning' at Yelvertoft Marina. But before that, I have to pass through Crick Tunnel. What does that have in store for me?

    Alan, that mooring spot with the lovely brick accommodation bridge ahead, the overhanging trees and the bleating of the sheep, I don't think I'd ever go back to the marina if I didn't have to. Looks like heaven to me. Very much enjoyed the editing on this episode.

      That's very nice of you to say Tim, that is a favourite spot with boaters, as you catch the afternoon / evening sun. So it's a good place to stop before going down the Watford flight of locks. Thanks for your appreciation of the editing. Cheers

    What a summer cruise you've taken us on, I'm quite sad its come to an end, but as they say all good things! Thank you so much, Alan you've really done yourself proud in the professional way you produced your Vlogs. I'm already looking forward to your next one's. All the best my friend and keep safe. A note to Alan from Dave thank you very much for the latest series don't forget to take the aerial off the roof Andrew I also talking about solar panels don't leave the rope on the panelit it reduces the power going into the battery be it just a little bit but it does have an effect over a period of time looking forward to the new series maybe you would have got the recent damage painted all the best Alan bye for now

    • @MyNarrowboatVenture
      @MyNarrowboatVenture  3 года назад

      Thanks Dave, there was no damage to paintwork just one of the clips that support the rear canopy. I know trailing the centre line across the panels is not ideal but it's helpful when cruising, as it's less likely to snag when I use it. I'll make sure the panels are clear when I moor up. Thanks for the advice. Cheers

    I've really enjoyed watching your travels this year, Alan. So many narrowboat vloggers seem to struggle with the simple business of cruising - trying to sex it up with fake peril or incident for views - yet your content is effortlessly engaging. Also... like the side cleats and the way you have modified your cover to accomodate them. This may have to happen on my own boat.

    • @MyNarrowboatVenture
      @MyNarrowboatVenture  3 года назад

      Many thanks for your comment, which is much appreciated. The side cleats were added beneath the cratch cover and sits over them, so no modification was needed. They are rather small but that was my choice, as I only had to drill one hole but I've not had any problems with them. Cheers

      Thank you very much for your kind comment. The Canal and River Trust carry out winter maintenance works, which means it's more difficult for boaters to plan cruises. So between October and say March, the canals will be very much quieter. There are of course continuous cruisers who are out on the canals all year round. I will still go out occasionally, as it's nice to see the changing Autumn colours. All the best Alan

    I wonder if the other boats are going a wee bit too fast through the tunnel . They might feel more confident because they have the rubbing band on their side, also as they finish passing you your bow is pulled to port and therefore your stern dings the wall. That's my theory anyway. Enjoyed your summer trip . Thanks for sharing.

    • @MyNarrowboatVenture
      @MyNarrowboatVenture  3 года назад

      On film, it looks as though the boats are moving quickly but in fact, passing in the tunnel is generally done at a very slow pace. I don't think anyone has ever passed me at an unacceptable speed. I obviously turn to port to try and get back into the centre of the tunnel, which is part of the problem. If the deck was bow shaped at the rear, it would be much easier. Cheers

    Hi Alan a nice relaxing video about the solar and deep cycle battery’s it is not recommended to run them below 50 per cent as they can do damage to the battery next year I’m investing in lithium batteries as they can be run down to 5 percent but they are not cheap about $4500 au dollars for 4 batteries thanks stay safe and happy and safe boating cheers Barry Sydney Australia 🇦🇺

    Hi Alan, 10.6V is pretty much dead flat which is killing your batteries. Lead acid batteries should only be discharged by 50% which is 12.2V (12.1V absolute minimum) this will make them last longer. So just as an example, if you have 4x 100Ah (Amp Hour) batteries, this is 400Ah’s and with the 50% of useable capacity which will be 200Ah’s. You need to put back into the batteries what you have used and the way to know this is by fitting a shunt type battery monitor which counts these Amp Hours out and back in. From such a deep discharge you are taking them to, this really will take many hours to get them back to 100%. 👍🏻

    • @MyNarrowboatVenture
      @MyNarrowboatVenture  3 года назад

      I appreciate that, thanks, that's why I realise my batteries probably do need replacing. I don't have any monitoring equipment other than the MPPT controller and another device on the solar power side. These give all sorts of readings, which mean nothing to me. The power installation on my boat seems very basic. Thanks for the advice, cheers.

    Hi Alan, I bought two new batteries when I put the solar in, if it's been left charging it shows 13.7 usually but once the fridge is on which is 46 watts it will take it down to around 13.0 but as soon as I unplug it soon comes back. I've been really impressed with it so far and because of restricted space I can't adjust the panel. When I start the new heater up it will take it down to 12.6 but only for about 10 min before it recovers. The starter battery is on a completely separate circuit and has a solar maintainer but it is an old battery and was there when I bought the boat but I notice that it soon runs down and can take ages to get back up so I'm sure a lot depends on the health of the batteries. Loved the shots through the bridge especially when the boat was coming through. Thanks Alan take care. Alan.

      Hi Alan, it seems fairly certain my batteries have had it. I'm going to get them tested and take it from there. I'm pleased to hear all is well with your solar and a good idea to buy new batteries at the same time. My starter battery has no separate means of charging other than when I'm attached to the shoreline power. Keep safe, cheers Alan

    A lovely conclusion to the series. Your solar panels are clearly doing a good job, great results even in partial shade. Keep ‘em clean and you should be alright. I’d be a little concerned about the batteries however. Assuming they were fully charged by the engine when you moored up, you ideally want them to be reading higher than that by the end of the evening. I can’t recall if you have covered your electrical setup in earlier videos, but it is worth checking the battery condition and testing each one individually as you might be approaching time for replacement.

      Hi Darren. Thanks for your comment. I've not spoken about the electrics on my boat but I will be getting the batteries tested, as I suspect they do need replacement. Unfortuntely, the batteries are tucked away and not easy to get at. Cheers

    • @MyNarrowboatVenture
      @MyNarrowboatVenture  3 года назад

      Thanks Rick for your comment and support. Some bridges take public roads across the canals, so boaters, motorists and pedestrians have access onto and across them. An occupation or accommodation bridge, as it's also known, links farmers fields on either sides of the canal and tend to be private. Some farmers ensure there is no way you can get from the towpath onto the bridge. In some cases, there might be a public footpath running across an occupation bridge, in which case access will be possible. Hope that helps. Cheers Alan

      Hi Alan, Is it possible to hinge the aerial, to make it fold as flat as possible ?
      Then it can be returned to its normal position, after filming ?
      I am not sure, what the manufacturers actually produce, for that type of aerial, but other boaters who have taller columnar types, have them hinged for access under the low bridges, (eg. CtC).
      Here is your opportunity for innovation. Produce a collapsible type aerial, and the boating community will applaud you.
      Looking forward to seeing the results !

      Hi Richard, glad you like the videos. The worst problem with the square stern is in tunnels when passing other boats and then trying to get off the edge of the tunnel back into the centre, as shown in this video. It certainly gives extra space on the cruiser deck though. Cheers

      Hi John. I have another cruising series to edit and publish, and there are a couple of other videos in the pipeline. The only damage to the boat was one of the clips that holds the canopy in place. Some boats do have navigation lights but it's not a requirement on the canals but could be on certain rivers. Sounds like your storage (batteries) aren't fully taking advantage of the solar. Maybe add another battery so you keep the lot above 50% on average. I'm no expert but adding capacity will reduce your depth of discharge in summer. I assume you are just going to be in a marina on hook up over winter?

I then had a break from filming and Studio had jumped on to Version 19, which I bought, took one look at and realised it had changed significantly in the interim and that I couldn’t really use it. When I started filming again, Version 20 was out, so I upgraded again and more recently bought 22, as the deal was too good to miss. Studio 24 is the latest version. I preferred the earlier editions of Studio, I find it less intuitive now, although it is a very powerful editing medium, I don’t use all its capabilities. There is good support though from Pinnacle and forums. Cheers
