    I have visited all 3 dams in Germany. When you stand on the Eder dam and look at the steep angle and short run in the Lancs had to get down to 50 ft, it looks almost impossible. Gibson and the boys were superb pilots. Very difficult and at night in a combat enviroment. Great admiration for these lads.

      We shall never underestimate what our friends the british did way back then and they went through the most grueling time to get it right tghe first time after many attempts to blast that dam at the time.

    I just love Lancaster bombers, i have a picture of Guy Gibson and his dog, stood in front of a Lancaster, in his flying gear, on my kitchen wall. Going to Derwent on 31 7 21 to pay tribute and lay a wreath at the memorial. My Dad was in the R.A.F. during the war, love you Dad. What unselfish bravery, please God bless these brave men, and keep them in your care. I live in Sheffield, and come from Loxley, originaly.

    The best way to look after these old birds is to fly them, lets hope the BBMF continues to do just that.

    Nothing like the sound of a Merlin engine. It's so recognisable.

    Isn't it wonderful to hear those Merlins singing - without the inane commentary you get blasted at you at every damn air show?

    Ah, but this is after they'd gone over the Derwent Dam, and were over the lower Ladybower Reservoir, so on the out run from having dropped the bomb - if they'd been for real. Other videos of the day show the aircraft above the Derwent Dam at a lower altitude to the water.

    Terribly brave men dying for our freedom, and occasionally the folly of their superiors.

      Avro 683 Avro Lancaster B.III This variant, which was built concurrently with the B.I and was indistinguishable externally apart from being fitted with Packard-built Merlin engines. The Packard Merlin used Bendix-Stromberg pressure-injection carburettors requiring the addition of slow-running cut-off switches in the cockpit.
      Avro 683 Avro Lancaster B.III Special Developed for the ‘Upkeep’ bouncing bomb as used for dam-busting Operation Chastise. A chain-driven hydraulic motor gave the bomb its ‘backspin’. Known at the time of modification as the Type 464 ‘Provisioning’ Avro Lancaster, 23 aircraft of this type were built. The bomb bay doors were removed and Vickers-built struts to carry the bomb were fitted in their place at Woodford Aerodrome. Lamps were fitted in the bomb bay and nose for the simple height measurement system which enabled the accurate control of low-flying altitude at night. The mid-upper turret was removed to save weight and the gunner moved to the front turret so that he could assist with map reading.

    Would a tallboy or grand slam have been moreeffictiveon the dams

    • @alanmacpherson3225
      @alanmacpherson3225 2 года назад +2

      Good point perhaps they weren't available at the time in 1943

    • @nickdanger3802

      First use Tallboy June 44, Grand Slam March 45.

      @Sailorman Oyster - "Would a tallboy or grand slam have been more effective on the dams?"
      Probably - but they didn't exist in 1943. Barnes Wallis, who designed the bouncing bomb, had tried to interest the Air Ministry in a very large bomb very early on in the war; they didn't want to know. Even after the success of the bouncing bomb, he still had an uphill struggle to get them to accept the 6 ton Tallboy - and only when that proved so successful did he get the go-ahead for the 10 ton Grand Slam.

      @Do Costigan - "Insensitive nonsense."
      If it hadn't been for men and women who were willing to pay with their lives for YOUR freedom, you insensitive, holier-than-thou fool, you would be living under a fascist dictatorship, and the only opinions you'd be allowed to express would be what the dictator allowed you to express.

    • @edenbreckhouse
      @edenbreckhouse 2 года назад

      Why is it 'insensitive' or 'nonsense' - you made the claims, now justify them.
