@@vegangurly I'm pretty notorious for liking books everyone hates. If you noticed, that book has a hella low rating so you're definitely in the majority here 😅
Yeah, I always thought the goodreads choice awards was a weird concept. How is it fair to vote for a book against other books that you haven’t read?! Books just take so long to consume as opposed to other forms of media. Also, I am so impressed by how fast you read all those books, you are the queen!
They need to have a large group of booktubers who want to participate in reading all the books, vote. Because like you said, anyone can vote wether they read the books or not. Plus how fun would it be to see all the videos like this one from some of our favorite booktubers?
This is such a good idea, but sounds so difficult! I always feel guilty voting when I have only read one or two of the nominees, so I love that you did this.
🙌🏻 *Finally someone fucking said it!* 🙌🏻 The Goodreads awards is a total popularity contest, and so so biased. Kudos to you Lala for reading all Top 10 Thrillers, and making what is probably the only unbiased vote this year! Personally I don’t like the thriller genre, so I don’t even vote for it, but I’m glad that you put the effort and time into calling out the system and maybe in the future more people will strive to be less biased with their voting.
The Chalk Man was meh for me, but the 7 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle was a 5 star for me. It was definitely worth checking out, and was reminiscent of an Agatha Christie.
„I was sent this by the publisher, then she was gone“ I wasn’t looking at the screen and thought for a moment that the publisher has vanished 😂🙈 Also I love your hair in all of this, it looks so stunning in this style and color 😍
Just wanted to say I was blown away by your dedication in this video. I am one of the people who voted without reading them all. Woman in the Window and The Wife Between Us were my favorites in the list. Totally understand what you mean about not really meshing with a writing style. Reading should be a pleasure, not a drag so don’t be hard on yourself!
hi lala, im just here to say thank you for uploading this video. things havent been great for me lately, particularly today, and this made my day especially since i've been anticipating this video for ages. so, thank you beyond words ❤
I keep saying one day I’m going to go back and read all the mystery/thriller winners from every year. This video bumped that idea back up for me. Awesome video once again!
I’ve been watching you for a couple months, and let me tell you, you’ve slowly, but surely have became my favorite booktuber of ALL TIME! lol you just have so much dedication and I love that! Keep it up!
You’re by far my fave youtuber and I hope you never stop making videos! They’re always helping me with my anxiety and I’m so grateful for that, thank you!💜
I do agree that perhaps only people who have marked that they have read the books in Goodreads vote for the best books of the year. If you don’t read them how do you know....? Just because it is your favorite author... or favorite series.... or most popular.. it doesn’t mean it is the best.... I think you should have had to mark them as read on your Goodreads before they allow you to vote for it.
Thank you so much for the inspiration! I just recently got into reading and it’s so hard for me to find new good book, because my friends read different book genres. I just bought “the woman in the window” and “the wife between us” after watching your video. Can’t wait to read them.☺️
Geeeez the dedication is next level. I totally LIVE for your longer content, it's some of my favorite videos you've done! I can really see the effort you put into it and I totally appreciate it, 'cause it's SO ENTERTAINING!
JD Robb is like a futuristic nyc law and order and law and order svu. Although all the books are related they do not need to be read in order. The characters have the best chemistry, love the series.
I agree so much with your thoughts on GR awards. I hate it so much and I never feel like I can vote in any categories because I have not read all the books in any of the categories, and last year Artemis by Andy Weir won best Science Fiction even if that book wasn't published until November of that year. How was it that a book not published before the end of vote could win a category - I mean even if people had read ARCs I don't think that many would have read them....
Your rant/talk about the Goodreads awards totally sums up my thoughts. I never vote because I'll go in and I'll have read one book from the category and just because I read it doesn't mean it deserves to get my vote so then I get frustrated and I just don't even vote. 😂😂😂
For the first time this year Goodreads had a “Best Of the Best” category, and I might do what you did but with these books instead, and that’s if they have it again next year. If not I’ll probably try and do the “Young Adult Fiction” category.
Totally agree with you on the Goodreads Choice Awards! A while ago, I asked on Twitter if anyone voted for books they hadn't read, and a surprising amount of people did... So that makes it even more unreliable. They just voted for books they'd heard of??? MAKES ME SO MAD. I love your dedication.
I cannot get into Tana French either.. glad I'm not the only one. Sometimes I Lie was SO dramatic, I couldn't stand it haha. And now I really want to read The Wife Between Us! I have no idea how you finished all these! You are killing it.
So happy to see this video. I've been anticipating it. I haven't read James Patterson in years but I used to read every one. Political thrillers are not at all his usual. It's usually detailed fast paced murder mysteries. Easy books to read for sure!
YAAAH KAYLA I'M SO HAAPPY YOU LIKED THE WOMAN IN THE WINDOW!!! i read sometimes i lie and it was like 2 stars for me omg the ending was so dumb the death of mrs westaway genuinely surprised me! I gave it 4 stars :) OOOH GIRLLL ok im bumping the wife between us up my TBR!! holy sHIT kudos so many books read in such a short span of time! also your haiiiirr, it's shininggggg
YES!!! I have been thinking this for years - this is why I never vote. I even thought about doing something like this this year. I really wish they gave us like 2 months so we could at least be well versed in one or two categories that we really care about. I mean...no way can I read 10 fantasy books in 2 weeks :P
I love that you committed to doing this and actually managed it! You’re totally right re the Goodreads awards and everything you said is exactly why I don’t pay attention to them and why I also don’t bother to vote! Thanks for making this video, I love the way you talk about books ☺️
I love your ideas and your commitment. This video is amazing and the way you talk about books is so interesting and respectful, even when you don't like them. Thanks for all your hard work!
My favorite thriller of the year was The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle. I find the premise of living in a different body every day so unique and works so well because we can see the mystery from lots of different perspectives. Throughout the book, I kept a note about the characters so that I could solve it along with the characters. Definitely my favorite of the year.
As always loved how original this video was and I'm always impressed by your creativity and dedication! Definitely adding The Wife Between Us to my TBR.
Girl, I was sad when you stopped the closet unhaul, but I more and more understand what you meant when you said it didn't leave you time for creative videos. Your videos are amazing this year!!
Well, I had planned to go to bed and then saw a new LaLa video and one simply does not NOT watch the whole thing. I feel like we have similar taste in thrillers. Our top two were identical and I was dyyyying to hear what you thought of Wife Between Us....girl....GIRL. I was shook. And that ending. I screamed. Kudos to you for reading all ten of those. I knew some were going to be a difficult read and I would say re: James Patterson that you would probably like the earlier Alex Cross stuff but after Violets are Blue you should treat his books like drugs and Just. Say. NO.
Love this video! You are spot on with the issues about the GR Choice Awards. I embrace that my votes add to the madness and vote on almost every category. I usually try to vote for a lesser-talked about books, but they are still ones I've read or are at least heard good things about.
I will totally take Lethal White off your hands! 😋 I actually haven't read any but really want to bc they seem right up my alley.. I just was given The Dry so I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Your editing and video ideas always amaze me, Lala, wow! You've actually made me interested in a couple of books that I didn't care for based on their descriptions before, so thank you. Also I'm grateful goodreads at least doesn't allow voting multiple times unlike MTV awards etc. where it's more about devotion of the fandom than anything else. I still don't care for it that much though either.
I loved this video , totally got the throught behind this idea and such a good way to make a vote on a award on goodreads , I do get that most people would just vote for the favourite cuz I have always had one or 2 in a category or none at all that I've read in there
After watching this video you’ve officially become my SECOND booktuber that I watch along w/Emily Fox. I loved your explanation as to why the GR awards are sorta skewed, cuz I seriously think about that shit all the time!
I love this, it is fascinating to see how the Goodreads choice awards actually work (even if it does make no sense, lol). I really liked The Woman in the Window, but I don’t think I’ve read any of the others. If I read this many thrillers in a row I don’t think I’d ever want to read another one! I hope this doesn’t burn you out on your favorite genre for too long! :)
Your videos are what inspired me to join Booktube, and this one especially has to be one of my favorites. It’s so interesting seeing your thoughts on “the top thrillers of the year”. That being said, I highly recommend The Chalk-man, The Last Time I Lied and The Broken Girls! They are my all time top 3 thrillers, and they all came out this year... (that being said I’ve read limited before this year LOL). Loved this!
I have read, and LOVED, The Woman In The Window and The Death of Mrs. Westaway. The Wife Between Us is sitting on my TBR shelf next to The Outsider and The Lying Game. I also have an eARC of An Anonymous Girl from NetGalley by the same authors of The Wife Between Us so I can't wait to read both of those!! Other mystery/thrillers I read this year: I Let You Go and Let Me Lie - LOVED An Unwanted Guest - loved When The Lights Go Out - I'm not even sure..... Pieces Of Her - LOVED I Know You Know - LOVED The Word Id Murder - loved The Perfect Mother - liked Then She Was Gone - liked Where They Found Her - liked
I don't go to Goodreads for my mystery and thriller recommendations, I would rather listen to you. As someone that occasionally dips a toe in the genre, I'd rather get recommendations from someone that loves them and can suggest really great ones. I just ordered Behind Her Eyes for myself and my brother's girlfriend for Christmas because you raved about it. After that, thinking of going with If We Were Villains (I think that's the title) because you were so excited about both. Thanks, as always, for being awesome!
Love this video so much! It’s awesome to see a fully fleshed out idea beginning to end. And the best part?? Now I’m really excited to read thrillers 😊✨
Great video! I really enjoyed The Woman in the Window as well. And I recommend The Broken Girls even though it didn’t make it to the top ten! The break down of the GR voting was very informative and your review helped me to take The Witch Elm off my TBR and add Sometimes I Lie to my TBR. I really appreciate your effort to make a literary A NEW content and absolutely in another level. Really brilliant and really enjoy it. I don't care about goodreads books of the year but this video totally makes me excited to know the winner.
Just pausing this as you talk about Jane Harper... Definitely give The Lost Man, her newest release (2018) a go, it's my favourite of hers so far (one of my favourite books of the year) and also branches away from John Falk which works well for the story 😊 loving this so far!
Oh wow, this is really amazing. I often thought this is something I would want to do .. or have done (read all the books in the finals). But I could NEVER get that much reading done in that little amount of time when the days are predetermined by the awards schedule ...
God the effort of this video is breaking my brain. WOW.
God, The Wife Between Us synopsis sounds like GAR-BAGE.
myreadingisodd Immmmmmmm not sure why Layla loved that book so much. I rated it pretty low. But the synopsis was extra cringey.
@@vegangurly I'm pretty notorious for liking books everyone hates. If you noticed, that book has a hella low rating so you're definitely in the majority here 😅
The effort in all her videos breaks my brain lol
*reading the synopsis for wife between us*

Lala: I really... hate that
Me: nvm then
Nico Ryder lol, I just finished it yesterday
She liked the book!
@@criselda. I know I just thought it was funny
So much effort, I would never 😂
SAME lmfao

Never! THIS part is the TEA.
Goodreads has entered the chat...

Meanwhile I finish one book in the same time span 😂
Abbey Vogel seriously lol.
The thing that aggravates me about the voting is they include books that haven't been published yet. How can that be fair?

Damn!!!!! Your ideas are amazing !!!
This was such an awesome video! I was like “oh hey, I should do this with the YA Fantasy” category and then looked at the options and was like... NOPE
