It’s not a mystery thriller, but THE best twist I’ve ever read is in The Membranes by Chi Ta Wei, a taiwanese author, if you’re looking for nonwhite authors for the next batch. It’s truly such a wild book - technically more of a dystopian novella
it was published in 95 and i don't think she has done that year for her "find a five star book from every year I've been alive" !!! i think haha also sounds like a great book thank you for the rec!
Yeah I feel like this novella would be awesome to read for that year’s vlog 😊 This is definitely one of my favorite speculative novellas of all time and definitely a big twist
❤
i’ve been wanting to recommend this book for a plot twist video so i definitely second this!!^^
Oh definitely adding this to my list! I live in Taiwan and am always on the lookout for Taiwanese authors to check out.
An important part of Emmitt Till’s story is that the white woman in question lied about what happened and she never apologized or showed any remorse for what she or her husband did (she only died last year at 88, so this was not long ago at all) nor did they receive any criminal recourse. It’s a horrific pieces of history that we have, unfortunately, not moved past at all 😢
Thank you for saying this. I was gonna comment this because I didn’t want anyone to think that Emmitt Till said the wrong thing vs that white woman lied
Absolutely, and the book definitely gets into all of that
Thriller/Mystery is my favorite genre, but I also rarely give them 5 stars
I think it's because we expect so much from them. We want them to be perfect!
I am here for the “None of this is True” SLANDER👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
It's funny because I just read None of This is True and personally I really loved it, but I agree that it isn't actually very twisty at all. I expected it to be a lot more shocking with how people talk about it.
I really like Lisa Jewell’s writing, but I agree it is not twisty or even very… mysterious? It’s just vaguely unsettling and a little uncertain at the end. That has been my experience of her other books I have read as well. It’s not for when you want to solve anything or be shocked, it’s more writing for when you want to have a slight ick about people who are sort of unhinged. 😂
@@jacforswear18 that's exactly how it feels!
Whoever told you The Trees has a shocking plot twist was lying, it's very much speculative literary thriller
THANK YOU for validating how borrrringgg none of this is true was!!!! i just couldn’t do it, i didn’t GET it!
I gave None of this is True 1 star and I honestly wish I hadn’t read it.
I once managed to determine the culprit simply by process of elimination very early on.
Sometimes it's so obvious what fake outs an author has planned and by simply assuming those won't happen I chose the only leftover character as my suspect and 300p later turns out I was right 😂
The tree you chose to sit at while wrapping up The Trees is so beautiful. Like one of the coolest trees I've ever seen. What a lovely little spot.
My favourite mysteries are ones where I get MOST of the twist/solution but not all of it. So I get to feel very smart but still get a little surprise 😂
11:58 😂 that'd be me .. like..
"oouu the water's so clear and pretty."
SPLASH 💦
I just know if I showed my mother the cross-stitching section she’d simply pass away at that tangled mess 😂😂😂
I'm glad you didn't like None of This is True because I hated it due to even our audience stand in (Alex) victim blaming Josie for being groomed and praising the groomer for being a decent father??? It was so predictable outside of this and generally boring.... all that and they still mention how devious and powerful a 15 yr old was when she got togther with a 40 yr old??? WTH i will die on this hill, I hate that godforsaken book
You continue to break my heart when you read Lisa Jewell books. 💔😭😂
I won't do it again I promise 😭
When you mentioned the dogs in The Last One, I'm thinking 'all of the people have been turned into dogs'. Can't tell you why or how but now I have to know what happened to all the people. Also adding The Trees to my tbr. Thanks for another great video ❤
omg LOVE that concept
The Trees was so weird and yet so funny. Aside from its heavy impact (it certainly packs a punch) and its unique premise, I remember often laughing because of the dry, deadpan humor. I live in the south and the idiocy of the white characters was painfully spot on. Percival Everett is a fantastic writer.
As soon as you held up The Trees I immediately thought to recommend Assumption by Percival Everett, the plot twist is HUGE and I literally think about it all the time and I read it 4 years ago now!
noted!! 👀
I also hated the ending of The Last One…it made me want to scream lol
Watching you read The Last One as someone who has read it was so good 😂👌
as a stars fan, seeing you and liam pick them to win is both awesome and terrifying...the jinx potential 😅
The gasp I gusped when you lifted your thread box 😅😂 but I love that it works for you and you’re enjoying cross stitch!
I love how you said you're not not gonna try to guess but be along for the ride yet we get full in depth theories as you read 😅
As a cross stitcher and reader, this was so exciting! Haha. Cross stitch wise, who cares about your back? No one. Don’t worry about it. Your storage methods though? Girl pleeeeeease. 😂 but I totally get feeling organized online but not in real life, cause same.
You’ve introduced me to some really great thrillers so I’m pumped to follow your journey/advice with these!
I gave The Last One 5 stars. I loved it. And I liked the ending. It was wild as hell.
I loved The Last One - it might be the last (and one of the only) mystery/thrillers that I gave 5 stars
Seeing your reaction to The Last One was golden!!! I gave it 5 stars!
im so glad you read the drift! it was my second favorite book from last year. the twist really got me!
this is JUST what i needed for my self care sunday evening 😌
What an exciting video!! I really miss your thriller days ❤❤
Thank you so much for taking my recommendation of Kill for Me Kill for You🤩. Sorry it didn’t work as well for you as it did for me but that’s thrillers for you lol
I know that you didn't really enjoy Catriona Ward's other novels, but I think Looking Glass Sound is right up your alley! It's by no means a perfect book, but it does have shocking twists (the main one being one of your favorites)... AND it's sorta just crazy and brain bending.
Ahhhhh I feel like I should read this, but if I give it a low rating like her other stuff, everyone's gonna be like "why did you pick up *another* one of her books just to talk sh*t about it?! 😠" hahahaha
I literally just checked out The Last One from the library yesterday and this is making me SO excited to read it!
If you had told me that an "The-ghost-of-Emmett-Till-seeks-revenge" book was funny, I wouldn't have believed you lol.
I loved None of this is True. But I don’t care about “twists”. I skew more towards psychological thrillers/mysteries which I think this was. I thought it was a fascinating character study of both women. And I loved the ending where the author left you considering what part of the events were true. And also how malleable the concept of truth is. It was very similar in vibes to The Family Upstairs. I found it fascinating from beginning to end and read it very quickly.
It’s okay to have a messy back of work. What I can’t wrap my brain around is the unlabeled colors
It's annoying cause I know that I *can* keep it neat and cute, I just get lazy hahahaha
I just noticed Other Words for Home on the shelf behind you. I adore that book!
It's been SOOOO long since I read a book that actually gave me a twist. I need some! Might need to go through that tier rank list at some point!
I rarely give Thrillers 5⭐ ... only one recently I can think of.. How Can I Help You by Laura Sims. A psychological thriller about an obsessive cat-n-mouse game between two librarians. Lord of the Fly Fest by Goldy Moldavsky is close to a 5⭐ just because it was so fun and she did something unexpected while still being inspired by Lord of the Flies.
Cool! I just borrowed How Can I Help You on Libby-fingers crossed!
@@bethanyseabolt9387 I know a few other people who also really liked it. it's more of a slow burn character focused story but does spiral a bit out of control.. I would not read the synopsis, it spoils a bit honestly. hope you enjoy it!!
Just the way you where talking about the book (the trees) in the start without to much details and just your real reaction 😂 I’m so intrigued now I WILL read it as well
I put exactly one recommendation in your TBR jar a couple of years ago and it was Telephone by Percival Everett.
There are three different versions of the book! It's such a cool concept. I preferred it to The Trees.
I totally agree about None of This is True. I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop and while, yes, things escalated as the book went on, I never felt particularly shocked or satisfied with anything that happened.
Random... I love your Pink Floyd tee shirt. I was in High School when they came on the scene. 😯🥴😊😍
I’d say Monday’s Not Coming by Tiffany Jackson was the biggest plot twist for me
I was so disappointed by None of This is True. I thought for sure I had missed something or read a different book than everybody else. It was so boring and there was not one single twist. Which left me so confused as to what everybody was talking about when they called it 'shocking'
Same!! What twist?? 😂😂
Thanks for the recs! I’ve finally read a book before you. 😬😬 I thought None Of This Is True was ok. Interesting. :)
I added the boat book to my TBR and I'm worried 😂
Not a thriller, but The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield has a great plot twist.
thanks for the rec!!
I just bought The Drift the other day since it was on sale and now I'm even more excited to read it! For recommendations, I don't remember if I've already commented this, but for me a book with really good twists that got me is Widows by Lynda La Plante! I could not put that book down!
CJ Tudor is an auto buy author for me. Her new one The Gathering is great!
Oh, I'm glad to hear that! I don't think I had ever heard of her before watching one of the most recent videos from "Gavin Reads It All" where this book showed up. It sounded interesting and when I saw that it was 60% off on Amazon, I bought it without a second thought lol
thanks so much for the rec!!
In the UK it’s called The Last Passenger and I was so entertained. Still smarting about the end, but maybe that’s the point, I haven’t forgotten it ! And PS I hated the Lisa Jewell.
Not a thriller, but As Long as the Lemon Trees Grow had a great reveal!
Yay!!!! Go Stars! ❤
I don't read new Lisa Jewell books anymore either. Her best for me is a family drama called The House We Grew Up In which has a hoarder mom so that's relatable for me. I also enjoyed her book called I Found You. That's it, the other more popular of her books are not good in my opinion.
Kayla that pile of threads is stressing me out! lol
omg I know, what is *wrong* with me
The audiobook of The Trees is fantastic! For a book that does have a shocking (to me) plot twist: Victor LaValle's The Changeling.
I just read a book by Ross Jeffery called I Died Too, But They Haven’t Buried Me Yet. The I guessed the twist but I felt like it was really good, it kind of gave the vibes of The Mist (film) by Stephen King with the ending.
The Perfect Ruin by Shanora Williams is a fun twisty thriller by an author of colour!
I love seeing your cross stitch. I am the messiest cross stitcher!
If you haven’t read Cover Story, highly recommend it for an amazing twist. My favorite twist ever, though, comes from The Twyford Code… still reeling from that one two years later.
I would love to know what you think of The Frozen River by Ariel Lawhon. It's technically a literary legal thriller about midwifery but it had me SAT. I was LOCKED IN while reading it. I would just love to know your thoughts.
this has definitely made me want to read the drift by cj tudor, wouldn't surprise me if it took me until winter to get to it though 😅
I guessed the true identities of two characters in Kill For Me Kill For You... I knew right away lol even knew how one character in particular was getting away with their identity... still a fun read.. there was one other thing that did kinda surprise me.
The trees sounds like it would be so good…
Steve Cavanagh book Thirteen is really good.
I feel like knowing a book has a big plot twist is a spoiler almost as much as knowing what the twist its...
Have you read His and Hers by Alice Feeney, I think at one point you said you like over the top aspects and the end of that book gets wacky but dark. Also highly recommend the audiobook with Richard Armitage and Stephanie Racine. I was thoroughly entertained.
I read None of This is True recently.. was a bit apprehensive because I read The Family Upstairs and didn't care for it, then listened to Then She Was Gone and remember nothing about it, but then picked up The Girls in the Garden on a whim at the grocery store and was actually creeped out and entertained by that one.. she's definitely not a favorite author of mine like she is for some people but None of This is True was SO hyped I had to know lol.. there are definitely sone uncomfortable things in that book and it is hinted at early on so if anyone is particularly sensitive to um... certain things, I would recommend looking up Content Warnings.
Idk if you're willing to give Steve Cavanagh another try but a mystery/thriller I really enjoyed and thought had a fun twist was Th1rt3en by him. It's about a trial, but the murderer isn't on trial, they are on the jury. I thought the twists and reveals were very well done!
I'm trying to get more into thrillers so this video was helpful. Re: Stanley Cup Playoffs, they're not my team but Winnipeg just won a 7- 6 game so that's looking like a fun series!
I'm holding onto a Wish and a prayer for the Oilers.
I am a cross stitcher and i have a thread bag that looks just like that box lol. It is totally normal. Creativity is a safe space to be messy! Also I think Ima pick up The Last One. I skipped the video of it cause I didn't want any even small spoilers.
As someone who enjoyed None of this is True because of the audiobook and mixed media element, I just listened to Listen for the Lie and loves it. Not very twisty and turny but funny and entertaining. Also I'm just a sucker for books with mixed media / podcast element.
You have to read The Pen Name by David Jacob Knight. It's my favorite thriller/horror book. This book is really intense and hard to read at times. So much emotion and pain. One of my favorite books ever.
The Last House on Needless Street is still messing with me. Definitely recommend anything by Catriona Ward but that one is my favorite.
None of This is True was my first and last Lisa Jewell. Not for me.
I was one of the people that recommended The Last One to you and so glad you enjoyed it (except for the ending lol) I completely agree with you on the ending, I was quite annoyed at how ridiculous it was 😆 but 90% of the book was so much fun to read and had me wondering which direction it was going to go, so I'll call it a win. I actually clicked on this video because I've been waiting to see if you would ever review None Of This Is True because I HATED IT! 😅 After reading it, I was like...what am I missing here? I felt so enraged after reading this book. Aside from it feeling like a big old waste of time, is it just me, or did Lisa Jewell just gloss over and justify the actions of a pedophile/sexual predator and that of a neglectful husband/father who goes on alcohol and drug binges? I didn't feel like there were any real twists because everything felt pretty predictable.
I'm currently in the middle of Pet by Catherine Chidgey, and it's pretty good if you have not read it yet and ever decide to do a part 2.
I think being a psych major and so interested in how people work made me love none of this is true. It's definitely not twisty though, I can agree there for sure.
I'm a psych graduate and it's why I hated it 😂 it was far too obvious and not psychologically interesting enough (to me) at all! it's funny how similar experiences in different people make for such differing conclusions 😁 (more interesting than the book anyway 😉)
I'm not sure what your taste in tv is, but you might like the show 1899! Sadly it only had one season but it was so well done!!
its 2 am right now in Indonesia, I was about to sleep, it is Monday but whatever I'll watch your video bfr going to sleep
Cross stitcher here - get yourself bobbins or floss drops OMG 😂 (how are you doing this without the floss colors labeled?!?!?) also we all have messy backs, as long as you can't tell from the front it's all good
None of this is True was my favorite thriller this year 😭
Do we need a reading mystery/thrillers until you get a 5 star video? 😅🤔
Hey Kayla, would you recommend any Thriller about a mom investigating her son/daugther's death?
I had a dream about it and now i want to read something similar (besides kill for me, kill for you)
I have the same Stanley cup final and winner as you and I’m scared with how Dallas has started this round
If you are looking for young adult mystery with some good reveals, I recommend Firekeeper’s Daughter and Warrior Girl Unearthed.
Hell yeah!
None of this is True was a let down considering the title and the hype. Like what is the reveal??
If you admit to self out loud you figured out twist early on then the book looses steam .
Has happend to me. Lisa Jewel is really good , speaking of twists.
Thank you for references CJ tudor being a woman because now I want to pick up their stuff lol
rather than 'plot twists' is there a term for stories where it, like...like there is a big startling reveal but not one where you go "Woah, wait, never saw that coming!" but "OH I feel so stupid for not thinking of it before!!!" The author that comes to mind is Timothy Zahn, I hesitate to call any of his endings 'plot twists' but I like to give a good 5-10 years between rereads so I have a chance to forget "OH right that's what was happening!!" like in Icarus Hunt or Deadman Switch. Not even mysteries really, just interesting plots with a lot of moving parts. If someone knows what the term for this is let me know so I can find it more easily 😂
Re: Playoffs. I'm a Caps fan so living on the vibe of Just happy to be here and hoping for a twist in our favor lol
I loved None of This is True, but I wouldn't recommend it as twisty at all. It's more of a slow build dread where you know what's happening and you're watching it play out. I found the audio to be a great experience.
I think the audiobook is the only reason I got through it! 😂
you have to read more karin slaughter!! good daughter (you will def not see the twist coming!) n false witness are A++++++ (I know you have read pretty girls). the will Trent series is also incredible!!
🔎🔎 me looking for a single Red Wings logo on those boards
Thank you for not liking "None of This is True" every person I know who reads LOVES it and I DNF'd after 40 pages. I absolutely could not do it.
I also 👀 the little detail in The Drift and guessed the twist and gave it a 4.5. I enjoyed it more than The Burning Girls.
I loved None of this is True but absolutely HATED The Last One so much 😂 the book was at a solid 2.5 for me until the ending when it crashed into a 1, hated it so much 😂
Most twisty novel I've read recently is "Greenwich Park" by Katherine Faulkner.
You should let your followers / subscribers “pitch” you books and you pick what to read SOLELY based off the pitches!
I thought I was the only one absolutely DONE with Lisa Jewell - gave her way too many chances, disappointed every time 😮
uh oh i hated the Silent Patient but just bought Kill For Me Kill For You. but my reason for hating Silent Patient is multi faceted so maybe KFMKFY won’t be as bad of a time.
