A cool trick to keep the air hose from getting caught under the tires is place an old brake shoe in against the tire. The curved brake shoe allows the hose to slide easily and it is free
I've painted quite a few cars in flat black rustoleum. 3 medium coats over a decent primer. I mix it with acetone and Japan drier and it holds up really well. My 82 chevy c50 has been painted for about 7 years now and still holding up well and it sits outside in PA weather.
@@daviddaniels6473 acetone evaporates at a faster ppm. Which reduces out gassing times and re coat times. It also in MY experiences causes oil based enamel paints to flatten much better when curing. I recently painted my 88 iroc z camaro with the same process as my 82 c50 and I got extremely minimal orange peel in the final finish. Thinner and mineral spirits didnt quite have the same effect.
At least it will be preserved and I agree with you that some cars deserve more time but this one is at least saved from destruction. Someone else can finish the bodywork down the line if you do get rid of it
I was taught to paint the same way by a guy at a small local body shop I paid 20 to let me watch. I painted 10-20 in my parents yard between high school and college for a couple hundred each profit to fund my 55. Thanks Dan
The flat black turned out nice. Skip the hood scoop. No need to break up the nice factory lines of a Nomad. I have to admit, I was really looking forward to seeing the white over silver you had originally planned. Keep that combo in mind for a future build. I think it would look sharp on a tri-five.
Way cool My 56 BelAir looked cool flat black because of all the Bel Air trim. your Nomad will rock! I saw lots of cool Nomads done flat black in the 60s and early 70s. My 56 was so cool327 4 gear pontiac posi. Flames old school flame on front
Yeah, and I remember when you brought it home. Your right, it was rough. And remember you took two to make one good one. And it has really turned out real good. Nice job Dan. Jack.
OMG! You're killing me. That last bit got me good. I know you won't, but forget about mucking about with the Hood. I was thinking you'd make at least one "pretty" car but I was delusional. I like watching your channel for what it is, not necessarily for what I want. I hope you can make a $ or two on it, and enjoy yourself.
The nice thing about your paint job you will have a great seal and a base for guide coat if you ever decide to wet sand and paint a color of your choice. Now you can enjoy it in the meantime.
That thing is awesome. Love it. I'm getting ready to convert a 57 pontiac 4 door sedan to 2 door sedan. This is the same color I'm doing. It look really sweet when you get all the chrome back on it. Well done!
The paint looks good! It now looks like somebody (you) actually cared about the car instead of letting it rust in a field...then "fixing" it with bondo. The transformation is dramatic! I know you've worked very hard on it. Can't wait to see it run and drive. Congratulations, Dan!
Maybe it's just my crappy internet connection playing the video in 360p, but that thing looked pretty straight when the paint went on. Either way, it looks wicked in flat black and I even learned a new patina blending technique at the end!
Flat black on a '55 Chevy is the ultimate machine. It's a driver, so how cool is that? You brought this car back from the dead, and I love what you've done with it.
I'm digg'n it. I would hate to see you put a scoop on it, but it is your car. From where you started & what you started with to here is an amazing accomplishment 👏.
My wife and I watch you a lot and love what you do. It's just like watching myself, I think like you so much it's scary! I have cars all over the place very similar to the ones you have. I just did a 55 four door conversion after watching you do your blue 57, it turned out great. I did it for my dad who is 83 years old, he loves it. I have a 55 sedan delivery I planed to do just like you did your nomad. Not because it"s what you did, it"s because thats what I like and it's mine. I have done body work all my life everybody wants perfection, I hate it. You have the right idea in my opinion. You can have fun and who cares if it gets scratched, life is way to short. Keep on keepin on!
I’ve never sprayed the rustolium paint but I have used a brush and foam roller. I painted my 1996 dodge that way. Nobody ever guessed it was rolled on. Everybody thought it was sprayed. To me the advantages are you can work without a compressor plus you don’t need a mask/filter.
I'm not a fan of the scoop myself, but I have to admit it fits the Gasser theme. Too late now, but a satin/eggshell white top (in Tremclad) might have looked cool, especially if you are going to patina it. A lot more work to mask, though, and probably smarter to do something!
Funny how you put one hand on the car to brace yourself while you’re wiping finger prints off with the other hand. 😂 Never a dull moment watching your videos!
I agree with you on needing a topcoat to seal it up. It can always be sanded off if you want, but we both know you won't 😂 Bonus, noire matte is easy to touch up. Of course right after you asked to watch the ads, an ad for RUclips premium came on letting me know I don't have to lol.
Hello Dan, hey Danielle. I'm not a prolific writer of comments, but I wanted to tell you that the the Nomad looks fantastic. I know that it will be even better before you're done with it. I also know that you would never say how good it looks because (1) That's just the way you are I think. (2) Because people of the internet are basically without filters and basically just F,n rude, so they would cut you to pieces if you dared the to say anything nice or complimentary about your own work. And Dude, it's your car and you're the one that's doing all the work, and we're the ones who are sitting on our butts watching you work . So what I'm saying is that people should watch the channel and enjoy it, or shut up and watch the channel and enjoy it. And like and subscribe of course. You're doing great, keep it up. Later
like it!!!! i am glad to see you do it your style, looks cool and menacing maybe can work that into a name like D D menace or something, godspeed Dan.ty for great entertainment
Love it!!!!! 😍 do the scoop and build it into a gasser!! Only thing I would think would looked better is a gloss black roof and everything else satin black.
Bravo Dan! You nailed it on the paint job. This video lands second favorite of mine only to the windshield replacement video. Keep showing us your way of doing things. Screw "The right way". Keep this gold rolling!
You know when I first saw this I was like why is this happening but after thinking it’s your car and I think what your doing with it is cool! I love hood scoops and flat black paint and just because it’s a rare car people think you can’t do what YOU want on YOUR car! Keep it up I love the work and your videos!
Now, you can add the "Nomadam's Family" to the "Black Widow" and the rest of the DD Speed Shop Tri-Five Collection. The Tremclad Black looks really mean!! Cheers!!
Semi flat salmon pink would look good with the flat back. Slam a straight axle with some 3in. Centerline wheels on front and some nice wide fats on the back!
can't believe how far it has come, i was to me a total rust bucket and you saved it, flat black paint is cool, just shows if you put your mind to do something it can happen
Keep true to yourself, Dan, no regrets! It would be cool to see some patina’d old school drag lettering or pinstripes on the ol’ girl once she’s painted but may not be in the budget. However this one turns out, it will be great!
I remember seeing a tip in Hot Rod magazine when I was a kid. Put an old brake shoe laid down flat against the tires on all 4 corners of the car. Keeps your air hose from hanging up on the tires. Your inspiring me to paint my own car. Keep up the great videos!
When my dad had his body shop when I was little this was in the 80's . He was 5foot 1inch tall. You should have seen the creative he came up with to paint van and wagon roofs. 5 wooden ladders and 2×6 planks. His spray booth was same as your garage.
A cool trick to keep the air hose from getting caught under the tires is place an old brake shoe in against the tire. The curved brake shoe allows the hose to slide easily and it is free
Oh LORD thank you for that tip... I lose my mind when the air hose wedges in that friggin crevice LOL... Never thought of using old brake shoes.
That's clever thanks
Who keeps old brake shoes laying around?
Cool tip, putting that in the tool bag! 🙌
And I am sure it works for garden hose to awesome
This is the what back yard build was meant to be. Thanks Dan from an average dude doing the same. Love the ending. Enjoy Paul
Yup!
Last car I painted, I used a Wagner Power Painter to prime it, came out fine, once I sanded all the screw ups off!
Too funny. ME TOO! I had a 68 4x4 Chevy truck I did. Fun times.
Scrap the scoop. No scoop. Scoop free. Scoopless.
I agree, no scoop, but definitely needs and import wing, and Taller = Better. 👍👍👍
Totally agree 💯
Personally, I would leave the on-purpose scratches off as well.
Bigger scoop!!!
You say that and he’ll put that big honking scoop on there
You can tell you love to troll the purest and I get a kick out of it too. you saved a total piece of rust and now you get to drive it. Great!!!!
I've painted quite a few cars in flat black rustoleum. 3 medium coats over a decent primer. I mix it with acetone and Japan drier and it holds up really well. My 82 chevy c50 has been painted for about 7 years now and still holding up well and it sits outside in PA weather.
Never tried acetone. How's it work compared to cheap thinner?
Ready for the summer demo derby, demo guys paint their junk cars flat black too.

I dig the black, if I wasn’t in a different province I’d offer to come lay out bad ass hot rod flame job🤟🏽😎🤟🏽
What ratios?
Dan, with the windshield out, now is the time to paint the dash too.
Impressive, Dan. From scrapper to driver. What's not to like. Rock On, Dan.
Dan lives to piss the internet off. I love it!!
Watching you hold the "masking" on tire while painting it, all I could think is, glad I aint the only one LoL
Definitely No Scoop. You are king of the mop. Looks good without the scoop, you want it understated,no scoop.
Loving the new paint. The Nomad has come along quite a ways from where it first came into the garage. Nice work!
“Gradge”
Good from far, far from good.
It’s just nice to see a RUclipsr painting a car.
At least it will be preserved and I agree with you that some cars deserve more time but this one is at least saved from destruction. Someone else can finish the bodywork down the line if you do get rid of it

The flat black turned out nice. Skip the hood scoop. No need to break up the nice factory lines of a Nomad. That Hood Scoop looks like a bloody cookie sheet from the kitchen. For Gawd Sake, don't ruin the hood with that thing !
You're obviously not a fan of Two Lane Blacktop are ya?
It's his nomad. Let him screw it up his way
@@mcdonaldm73 2 lane wasn't a nomad so its pointless
But it is a 55', and the hood scoop is immediately recognizable. Especially by the majority of the hotrod community.
For a project you felt burned out or stuck on, doing something that makes a lot of visible progress really helps to get everything moving along again.
Staying true to yourself. Keep up the good work.
Love the paint. She’s minty. Still would like the top white. That would be so old school.
I started hearing helicopters just watching, can taste the paint fumes lol, looks good enough

A great solution...It fills the need. Thanks for sharing. No princess frue-frue 15,000.00 dollar paint job...No china plate finish. Thanks!
The nice thing about your paint job you will have a great seal and a base for guide coat if you ever decide to wet sand and paint a color of your choice. Now you can enjoy it in the meantime.
Dan saving tri-5 Chevy’s . Your such a national treasure. That car is beautiful. Thanks for sharing.
That thing is awesome. Love it. I'm getting ready to convert a 57 pontiac 4 door sedan to 2 door sedan. This is the same color I'm doing. It look really sweet when you get all the chrome back on it. Well done!
Have you seen brushed chrome on matte paint ?
It looks killer and it'll save money on the chrome and polishing.

I know it's not in the budget but, dark red metal flake roof would look mint imo.
Nice to see colour on it, Dan!
In the definition of nomad it just ventured to a new place in its journey.
Painted my 1940 Ford Coupe about this time last year- I used satin black Rustroleum- turned out slick-
I'm digg'n it. I would hate to see you put a scoop on it, but it is your car. From where you started & what you started with to here is an amazing accomplishment 👏.

For some reason my heart sank when you ran the impact down it. 🤣
No one seriously expected shiny paint, it should look great with all its trim on.

Black top white bottom would of likely been my choice after seeing just the roof and window pillars done.
LOOKS WAY BETTER THAN SHINY SILVER AND WHITE!! LOVE THE LOOK!
dan those letter box scoops are so 80's dont put that ugly thing on it
🙃🙃🙃😉😉😉
Looks pretty good. You're doing it man, anyone can be a critic. Don't let them deter you from being better.
I think scoop is overkill.
Car looks like a beast already,
Just sayin' 😅

DAN please ditch the scoop turn it over and use it for a parts tray 55s are so cool with out any scoop THANKS
Love it, and I really enjoy your "Go ahead, make my day." attitude!

So is it flat semi gloss. Or satin black?
