Knowing how knots and parts of it flip to other knots/variants is too underappreciated. Your demonstration of applied flips, but also how to insert the loose part into the eye is so important and helpful! It fully unraveled to me when I tried to untie a bowline the way you tied it.
Finally someone to demonstrate how to do that successfully! I had given up trying to grasp how to tie the bowline under tension. Thanks for unraveling the mystery.
That is going to come in very handy in sailing. Many times I need to secure a line under tension and it is difficult to maintain tension while using two hands to tie a bowline. Even to tie a bowline one handed requires slack that may be difficult to achieve. This may be a game changer! Now to go practice.
Wow. I’ve just found your channel. It’s really cool to see the different perspectives of knots I’ve been tying for decades. You give awesome insights to these knots.
It is so, but so well done and explained that, at the end of the video, it felt like those moments when magicians revel their tricks. Awesome! Awesome!
Personally I find a taut line hitch easier to tie under tension but that's the beauty of tying knots, it's so individual and I still love seeing new ways of doing something I've been doing for years. Old dogs can learn new tricks.
Taut line hitches are adjustable, so it's a different application. If you're going to want to adjust the line, the various variations of half hitch are still your best option- this knot won't adjust under load, so it's best when you want to ensure zero slip. I'm usually going to prefer a hitch in cases like this, but there are definitely times I've wanted to get a bowline made under tension.
Very nice! I appreciate the various examples/orientations and the two-colored rope to make it more understandable. I'll have to try this one out myself.
Your continued awesomeness is appreciated sir. Thank you for sharing. PS- that was a good moment of daddying your boy. Safety management without forbidence or hovering.
Good presentation. A suggestion- using a truckers hitch (with a slip knot as the fulcrum) is a preferable approach for tarp tieouts. Its not only easier to make and release, but it can be used to adjust and tighten the tarp as needed. In that usage the truckers hitch also takes the place of other friction tightening knots and is far superior.
That was some slick shit John Wayne ..I use that quick release all the time..probably one if not the not useful knots there are..Quick tip: If your tying the quick release and have a lot of extra line: continue tying quick release again and again it called a “daisy chain” it’s how parachute cord/rope is packed so it will undo itself and not get tangled 👍 party on Garth party on Wayne
Now this is a knot video I can get behind. 99% of people will only need variations of bowline and 2 half hitches in their lives for applications other than shoes. Other knots are basically just decorative.
Cool! I’ve found that I have to practice the bowline in many ways - around to the right, left; towards me, away from me. And now under load with all of those different points of view.
The bowline is my favourite knot but all you need in a situation like that is a rolling hitch and it will be a lot easier to untie than a bowline tied under pressure
Agreed. In these situations I typically use a taut-line hitch. If it’s not enough, I’ll add as many extra half hitches into it (I joke and call it 6 half-hitches or 3 whole hitches) as I need to for it to hold well.
This one can be confusing but I got it. I’ll probably use the one with the half hitch that you showed for most of my purposes for easy takedown but the bowline might be more secure for semi permanent uses
A piece of string walks into a bar and walks up to the counter. The bartender says, "Sorry mate, we don't serve pieces of string in here, get lost." Upset, the piece of string walks out the door. A sudden thought strikes him. He ties himself in a knot and messes his hair up. He walks back into the bar and approaches the counter. The bartender says, "Oi, aren't you that piece of string from before...?" "No," says the piece of string, "I'm a frayed knot."
Love the video, but I had a question. Why not just use a truckers hitch in this case? It gives that 'pully' mechanical advantage to draw the ropes tight. p.s. I just stumbled on your channel tonight and you've impressed the heck out of me. Your videos are great. I've watched 6 so far and each 1 is brilliantly done! 👍
The usual tension knot would be a taut-line hitch. It allows you to easily make adjustments to how tight or taut the cord is. With time, hours, days things stretch and sag. With a taut-line hitch you can easily tighten or loosen as nevessary.
The truckers hitch is more likely to come undone when the knot is moved around without any tension applied. I would use this method if i wanted to take something partially down while ensuring the other side stays tied after tension is released.
Interesting...but the Midshipman's Hitch, ABOK 1855 is all you need for this application. Adjustable under tension, easy to tie and easy to untie even under heavy load. You're welcome folks. (in instances where very slippery line is used, the knot in this video IS preferable.)
When you tie a half-hitch here ruclips.net/video/OrQ_Oadmef4/видео.html , does it make a difference if you go over standing end with your half-hitch, like you did here, or under the standing end like your tarp demonstration later in the video?

Yeah, I move around a LOT, so I am ALWAYS looking to tie knots that will hold forever but comes undone easily.
I totally agree. It’s a huge value that his channel delivers.

You are really good at teaching this stuff. Truly a pro.
Na, he's an amateur. A first class one...
Something you don't need very often, but when you do, there's no substitute. Thanks for sharing.

Awesome! Awesome!
I love that you used the black and red ropes, that makes it SO much easier to follow!
You are by far my favorite source for knots
Beautifully presented. I have had some circumstances where that flip would have been a game changer. Gonna keep that one in the toolbox.

You’re fast becoming my go-to reference over the Ashley Book of Knots! These tips are indispensable!
Thanks! I appreciate the kind words.
One thing I want to say.
Thank you!
Saved my days
This shit is sooo cool!! I dunno why, but when I learn a knot, I look around for opportunities to tie it! I LOVE knots! So cool!
It is indeed cool! And the one's on this channel seem to be very well thought out and applied. Well taught too!
You're like a magician. Sweet knots, bro.
Your continued awesomeness is appreciated sir. Thank you for sharing.
PS- that was a good moment of daddying your boy. Safety management without forbidence or hovering.
Amazing!! I just had to tie a knot into a line under tension and this would have been perfect. Awesome work buddy!

How to tie a knot under tension, remove the tension, got it!
Brilliant! You have a depth of understanding that's unique to your channel. AND you are a great teacher! Bravo!
You, sir, are the best thing on RUclips.
Excellent tutorials. I like how you repeat the lesson from different angles.
Gained a subscriber.
Thank you RUclips algorithm! This guy just got a sub.
Daaaaaang man this is the first video I've watched from your channel.
You really are a first class amateur.
I like the video 👍
I love these videos. Thank you for rekindling my childlike intrigue in knot tying
This is adding more steps than necessary for something under tension
I have been wondering how to tie such knot but was afraid to ask.
Thanks.
I've been tying the bowline since I was a child and I never knew this trick!!

Pretty slick, your demonstration is very clear. Well done 👍🏻

Single handedly left and right?

Hard to follow until last blue line segment! Great video thanks!🙏🏻
Amazing all these new ways of making knots.
Love the video, but I had a question. Why not just use a truckers hitch in this case? It gives that 'pully' mechanical advantage to draw the ropes tight.

You are very clever! Love your channel’s content. THANKS!
So glad I found your channel. Fantastic vids!
I'm learning so much thank you! What would you suggest for a cloths line knot/tension system?
I appreciate all your knowledge. What reading material can you recommend on knots. Preferably your book if you’ve written one 👍
Very impressive, i tought it was impossible to tie it under tension.
Very usefull vidéo
BROTHER!
THANKS FOR SHARING!
ENJOY YOUR VIDS.
CHEERS!

Your fiorentina 🥩 is still waiting for you!
Thanks for the video!
Thanks for a very useful demonstration.
🤯 Brilliant way to explain things.
This is RUclips gold.
Absolute Master Class. 100. Nice video.
nice knot but seems link a taunt line hitch would be a better knot is this application. Then you could apply tension after tying the knot....
Wow, thank you so much. Excellent video 👍
Best explanation at 2:19
1:57 my jaw hit the floor! thats glorious!
Love your videos and your family
Good camping, off grid knowledge
I prefer friction hitches for tarp lines. Farimmond's Friction hitch is a good one if you want it to be slippery,
Thanks for sharing this cool take on the bowline. When would you prefer this approach to tensioning cordage over say a trucker’s hitch?
The truckers hitch is more likely to come undone when the knot is moved around without any tension applied. I would use this method if i wanted to take something partially down while ensuring the other side stays tied after tension is released.
Excellent video, well filmed and described.

Very insightful!
Very wel described, thanks.
How do you untie the bowline, if it was tied under pressure when you tied it?
Dang freakin amazing video
Pretty slick and great instruction. Sub'd
Also, I’m enjoying finally learning to tie knots at 35yo
I think your “Dog Collar” would work very well here!
👍🏻 Extremely cool! Thanks
or you can tie a tautline hitch or a triple half hitch and adjust your tension at any time.
Keep it going
AMAZING!
Ingenious! Thank you.
Really interesting!
I think we ALL said, "watch your toes", in unison
can I use it to hold things in a trailer? would it be safe enough?
I would use an automatic truckers hitch instead.
You know RUclips, i havn't sailed in almost 10 years but it's 430 in the morning. So sure.
You can put a quick release on the bowline too
You’re a better dad than I am. I wouldn’t have said anything and let it be a learning moment….
Brilliant!
That’s so cool
I feel a little violate, what just happened? 🤣 I know how to tie a lot of knots, BUT YOU REALLY know them from every angle in real time.
Why would you use a boline to hold tension?
Замечательное видео, но в данном случае лучше пользоваться узлом "штык" или "штык с обносом"
The Stolen Bowline! (It rhymes if you pronounce "bowline" as BO-LYNN.)
When you tie a half-hitch here ruclips.net/video/OrQ_Oadmef4/видео.html , does it make a difference if you go over standing end with your half-hitch, like you did here, or under the standing end like your tarp demonstration later in the video?
Awesome 👍
Impressive
Очень круто. Такой методики вязания булиня я не виде ещё.
Clever.
ITS BOWLIN!! just kidding, nice one
Теперь осталось узнать как развязать булинь под нагрузкой
Nice reiteration, more reiteration, please.
Strings and sorcery.
Does this mean I'm now an eagle scout 🤔
Quality
Coooooool!!!
Slick af
Wow that has allway bothered me, now YT recommondation scares me
Not sure why this is on RUclips, wouldn't this be considered Knotty 🤔
