    Knowing how knots and parts of it flip to other knots/variants is too underappreciated. Your demonstration of applied flips, but also how to insert the loose part into the eye is so important and helpful! It fully unraveled to me when I tried to untie a bowline the way you tied it.

    Finally someone to demonstrate how to do that successfully! I had given up trying to grasp how to tie the bowline under tension. Thanks for unraveling the mystery.

  • @77goanywhere
    @77goanywhere 3 года назад +16

    That is going to come in very handy in sailing. Many times I need to secure a line under tension and it is difficult to maintain tension while using two hands to tie a bowline. Even to tie a bowline one handed requires slack that may be difficult to achieve. This may be a game changer! Now to go practice.

    Personally I find a taut line hitch easier to tie under tension but that's the beauty of tying knots, it's so individual and I still love seeing new ways of doing something I've been doing for years. Old dogs can learn new tricks.

    • @maxwellschmidt235
      @maxwellschmidt235 Год назад

      Taut line hitches are adjustable, so it's a different application. If you're going to want to adjust the line, the various variations of half hitch are still your best option- this knot won't adjust under load, so it's best when you want to ensure zero slip. I'm usually going to prefer a hitch in cases like this, but there are definitely times I've wanted to get a bowline made under tension.

    Good presentation. A suggestion- using a truckers hitch (with a slip knot as the fulcrum) is a preferable approach for tarp tieouts. Its not only easier to make and release, but it can be used to adjust and tighten the tarp as needed. In that usage the truckers hitch also takes the place of other friction tightening knots and is far superior.

    That was some slick shit John Wayne ..I use that quick release all the time..probably one if not the not useful knots there are..Quick tip: If your tying the quick release and have a lot of extra line: continue tying quick release again and again it called a “daisy chain” it’s how parachute cord/rope is packed so it will undo itself and not get tangled 👍 party on Garth party on Wayne

  • @allanburrow3595

    The bowline is my favourite knot but all you need in a situation like that is a rolling hitch and it will be a lot easier to untie than a bowline tied under pressure

    • @explosivemallard8038
      @explosivemallard8038 3 года назад

      Agreed. In these situations I typically use a taut-line hitch. If it’s not enough, I’ll add as many extra half hitches into it (I joke and call it 6 half-hitches or 3 whole hitches) as I need to for it to hold well.

  • @pantac4493
    @pantac4493 3 года назад +3

    This one can be confusing but I got it. I’ll probably use the one with the half hitch that you showed for most of my purposes for easy takedown but the bowline might be more secure for semi permanent uses

    A piece of string walks into a bar and walks up to the counter.
    The bartender says, "Sorry mate, we don't serve pieces of string in here, get lost."
    Upset, the piece of string walks out the door. A sudden thought strikes him. He ties himself in a knot and messes his hair up.
    He walks back into the bar and approaches the counter. The bartender says, "Oi, aren't you that piece of string from before...?"
    "No," says the piece of string, "I'm a frayed knot."

    The usual tension knot would be a taut-line hitch. It allows you to easily make adjustments to how tight or taut the cord is.
    With time, hours, days things stretch and sag. With a taut-line hitch you can easily tighten or loosen as nevessary.

    Thanks for sharing this cool take on the bowline. When would you prefer this approach to tensioning cordage over say a trucker’s hitch?

    • @First_Class_Amateur
      @First_Class_Amateur  3 года назад +1

      The truckers hitch is more likely to come undone when the knot is moved around without any tension applied. I would use this method if i wanted to take something partially down while ensuring the other side stays tied after tension is released.
