  • Graphic novels have never been part of mainstream literature, but attitudes are changing. Author and playwright Denise Mina - who is best known for her crime novels, but has written for the Hellblazer series - explores how the comic book is finally being taken seriously by established prose authors.
She chats with fellow Scottish crime writer Ian Rankin - who has just penned his first graphic novel, Dark Entries - and the "Godfather of graphic novels", Neil Gaiman - writer of The Sandman - about the strengths of the medium.

    Can't believe
Footage from 2009 is being uploaded on BBC ARCHIVES.
2009 doesn't seem that long ago.

The BBC archives all broadcast television and radio. Its not being uploaded into the archives from 2009. It's being downloaded from the archive into RUclips for your viewing.

@@TheMonkeydood That's rather pedantic and taking what he said a bit TOO literally. The footage IS from 2009. Furthermore, you don't download video to RUclips, you UPLOAD it.

Brilliant track choice of playing Pendulum at 1:36! Was not expecting the BBC Archives to treat me with decent music as well as the decent video article :-)

Zane Lowe was quite the fan at the time, and a DJ on Radio1, so they were kind of on it.

Gaiman is the godfather of graphic novels? Not Moore, Eisner etc?

Moore for sure, I loved 'Swamp Thing', and he is arguably one of the most influential in this medium.

Moore is one of the most influential comic writers of our time that shaped both the comic and the graphic novel industry. The thing is that he hates the idea of graphic novels, as stated in an interview. Honestly, I don't blame him. He has his own preferences I guess.
