No no, in the tweet he specifically called them "gods". Even if the baccai darkin concept didn't follow through, one thing is for sure. They are gods. Not death worshipping vastayah. This has been confirmed.

"This is the end. As it was foretold -- as I promised. Sisters... forgive me." ~Lisandra (Watcher card) This quote and whole card hit me strangely and make me stop for a while before I moved on to see the rest of Freljord cards.
Maybe they give up their lives to help Lissandra hold the watcher back. The ''As it was foretold- as I promised.'' is an interesting quote itself. This quote is like it was meant to happen that way. Like it was written long before runeterra even exist.
Lissandra is really trying her best to keep the Sleeping Giants from ever waking up,its like shes no longer that "Villain-y" character but more on Neutral or Anti Hero.
@@gunlyte4661 this is the part that confuses me, she tries so hard to keep them locked away, but when you level her up she summons a Watcher and says "at last, they awaken", she inevitably knew they were going to wake up, and she doesn't want to stop it?
That is actually a really nice theory. It could be that when the pale man split himself in two, his two sides of his body laid down on the ground and mask mother came and put lamb mask on one and wolf mask on the other
Maybe when the pale man/grey man split himself in two, that when the mask mother appear and gave the maskes to the two half and shaped their form into the lamb and the wolf.
Maybe. That would make sense why it's called ''The mother''. Cause we know for sure she didn't give life to kindred, but she formed them as we know now.
So the watcher's form is an amalgamation of all that it's witnessed in the mortal plane? Makes sense. I could definitely see a watcher looking like that. The main body 100% resembles vel'koz which is nice attention to detail. The artist are on their A game with this design.

Missing a key thing here, Balestriders and what not WERE the watchers, they were originally designed to be the watchers / they were the original concept arts for them. Riot has since tried to retcon this which is why the connections between everything are wonky. Personally I'm settling on balestriders being a creature that the watchers turned into void creatures and Lissandra had encounters with the balestriders that led to her coming into contact with the watchers and then it unfolds from there. That's really the only way it's going to make sense and it adds up considering the watchers normally scouted regions of runeterra and had void creatures there PRIOR to actually attempting to manifest.
Can we also not forget that the Howling Abyss map (released back in 2013) depicts the head/face of a watcher at red side fountain. How cool is that?!?!
Just want to point out that stats and keywords of cards have lore meaning as well. And while Frost Thrall has more powerful stats as any other troll, and it has overwhelm (so they are much stronger), they lost they regeneration. So being tainted by black ice doesnt come without disadvantages.
I wanted to say something about the concept of the Mask Mother. While I do agree that she isn't the actual mother of Kindred (and that her name is most likely Mother), that doesn't mean that she isn't a motherly figure to Kindred. After all, when the Grey Man split himself in two I could see the Mask Mother finding the both of them and making two different and special masks for the both of them and would actually give them an idea of what they are and what could be their purpose or something like that. Also there is the possibility that they meet each other every once and a while and catch up on what they have been doing. After all we don't actually know how old the Mask Mother is and her significance could be that she is one of the oldest denizens from the Spirit Realm, and is basically a motherly figure to all of the spirits that dwell in the spirit realm. Though, I might be wrong cause this is definitely a knew concept of what is going on with Kindred and the fact that she isn't actually alone in the place where life and death meet.
I think the Watcher card is the future. in the description Lissandra is apologizing to her sisters for not being able to keep him at bay and now is breaching through the abyss.
Lissandra's corrupting power literally make sense She got her powers from the voids corrupting abilities Theory: what if she can actually use this ability to the lesser voidlings She could find a way to fight the watchers
Considering the Watchers are older than reality itself, would Aurelion Sol be able to stand up to them? Considering he is the Star Forger, I reckon that he has plenty of reason to be in the theoretical battle that would take place should the Watchers awaken.
I think that the watcher card maybe is referring to a dream, a thought of what he could do if he is released. I stand for this because they are gathering information from different people, and dreaming on how to finally destroy the annoying light
The watcher's design and the aggressive adaptive nature of the void makes me think it is part of Lissandra's level up requirement. If the watcher's had a way to observe the world through Lissandra or her minions particularly the powerful 8+ cost beings that Lissandra assembles to level up then it would give the watcher's the inspiration they need to morph themselves into powerful adapted beings. 8+ cost beings in legends of runterra typically have massive bodies, humanoid shapes, immense physical or magical capabilities. All the watcher's did is observe the best of the Runeterra's best (2-3 8+ cost units) and smash their designs all together to create an ultimate form. Much easier if they were able to observe what Lissandra is mustering to eventually fight them.
Absolutely amazing. I really love watching all your lore videos. It makes me even more pumped about League. Lissandra is my most played champion, and one of my favourite champions created. Thank you for sharing

I think the horned ice helmets are liss's mind control catalysts, even on the balestriders, and the face is an empowering sigil on the helmets made for the watchers to overcome their power
Personally I really enjoy the tiny face on a monster head. It's like Armityle The Chaos Phantasm from Yu-Gi-Oh, where on top of the creature's main head you habe a smaller humanoid face and it's a design which appears in other monster designs in other media as well. Idk why but I really love that choice of design
But a Rioter confirm that fading icon is a god of death for shurima... The baccai know him but because they are almost imortall they forget about death and the god of death they know is forgotten
3:00 Maybe a bit late, but I have another theory for the etherfiend: I do not believe it is another incarnation of Kindred/death, but the incarnation of being forgotten/forgetting. It has a quote from a person that questions what he becomes after his "second death", second death being being forgotten and also casts the spell "second death" onto a target. So the etherfiend therefore is not a direct incarnation of Kindred, as Kindred is the incarnation of death, but the etherfiend is the incarantion of the second death. So after someone is killed my Kindred, their next death awaits them in the afterlife, where the etherfiend prays on those who are being forgotten over time, such as the fading icon. The fading icon was the god of death for the baccai, ascended and Darkin, but all of these creatures are immortal and forgot that death even exists, hence the icon being a "fading" icon. That also explains why the ethherfiend killed the fading icon: it was finally forgotten and therefore died it's second death. Also, the etherfiend is pretty much as powerful - or even more powerful - as kindred is: Kindred is the god of death and can therefore never be forgotten, unless everyone is either dead or immortal. And if everyone has forgotten death, even Kindred will fall pray to the etherfiend. The etherfiend itself should be immortal, as forgetting can never be forgotten. But eventually, it will die with the death of the last entity in the entire world; being the universe including the spirit realm and all the celestials. So you could say the etherfiend is somewhat the most powerful being in existence as it will even kill aurelion sol and even maybe the Watchers?? (okay, the last one is maybe a bit farfetched, but it might be true, depending on the future lore of the void)
Funny idea i had : the face is one of a iceborn, as his body and power is used as a conduit for the watcher to arrive and form their body. Basically, ice and void possesion, because only the iceborn can wield true ice
It could just be that the pale man who cleaved himself in two was older than the Mask Mother, but Kindred as we know them were saved by the Mother after the pale man split himself.
When you realize Runeterra is just one world in a whole universe, and a very primitive world currently, and realize the Watchers want to destroy the entire universe.... Makes you wonder if they're spreading void corruption all over the universe in an attempt to destroy it, or just on Runeterra. It would be hella interesting to see some Void lore in the alternate futuristic versions of lore with the skin lines.
I do believe MANY of the alternate universe don't fall under the "multiverse" of the canon Runeterra universe, cause they don't make sense. Lux cannot magically become a cosmic entity cause by the laws shee HAS TO BE born under her current parents to be considered an "alternate version". That's why I feel Comsic Star Lux is just an entirely different individual, unrelated to Lux herself but shares the same name. On the other hand, skins like Elementalist Lux actually makes sense, cause from easter eggs this is the form of Lux she would take if she became queen of Demacia. Also, you are correct, Aurelion did mentions he saw chitinous beings gnawing on distant cosmic bodies, and that "Runeterra is lucky they didn't find this planet yet", so I guess the Watchers are indeed on their job of destroying the Universe, but Runeterra is just a hardy planet I guess. And A.Sol doesn't give a f*ck cause as long as his stars are untouched, taking care of puny planets isn't his job to do.
@@chronoshindou9848 I mean, even if the other AUs dont fall under the "multiverse" that doesn't mean void cant be a thing in them. I hadn't even made any distinction like you did with the AU. I just thought the AUs were each that - different universes entirely with same/similar characters. And yep, I think I watched a Necrit video where he explains how the Void is out in the universe on other planets and whatnot, but that Runeterra is a particular hotspot for void for some reason, I think? I dont want to say too much and be wrong, but I can't be asked to go back and find that video. I think it was when the Watcher cards were added to LoR and he was covering that.
I think the head might be to give the watcher more senses, like smell, and we don’t know how the main eye sees, it could see like humans do, but what if it’s more like a sense thing. The head could the be giving sight to. And maybe even hearing.
i think the part about the etherfiend only being able to prey on the weak and the fading is confirmed because it is basically a big vulture, which i think feed on the dead and weak maybe you said it idk but i felt cool when realizing it lolol

Ok, i´m a very Lore crazy person, and i have to say the way you talk about the storys and the whole conection between the cards and stuff i love it.... i have your vids running in the background no matter what i do ... keep it up...
The tentacles around the face of the watcher reminds me of nagakaborous. We have very little info on what is considered to be one of the oldest gods so it got me thinking. Is there a possibility that the bearded lady is a rogue watcher of some description?
this whole time i though the bale striders had a bird like head with horns and we were seeing a side profile of them. seeing the art with no background I now see how alien they actually are and can see why you asked riot if there was a connection
imo... the best mmos are faction based (or realm vs realm as some people call it.) So having an evil playable faction is still a decent game design choice. The obvious choice for playable factions are Noxus and Demacia, but there could be more than two factions.
Is it possible that if the eye of a watcher is its actual body, and the transformation of mimicry started when they entered the mortal realm, that it was the eye itself that grew horns, hair, and arms. That would make sense with the size of this watcher, as it is the same size as the original eyes under ice.
The watchers were probably copied from bale striders if draklorn soldiers were around before lissandra uses her sisters as a sacrifice, as it will make sense if that lissandra also have those horns kind of. Just like avarosa and serylda followers
Oh the Watchers sound a lot like the Eldrazi from Magic: the Gathering and I've always Loved the idea of these kind of... beings before all creation... type stories 😍🤩
I wonder what the Watchers breaking free actually WOULD be like. I doubt it'd be directly canon, but if they ever wrote some kind of alternate universe where Lissandra's defenses cracked: I'd definitely read it. My guess is that it would be some kind of huge boost for the Void in other regions and probably result in different Watchers empowering different regions.
Oh without a doubt some Watchers are going to escape in the future of the lore. It's ALWAYS been leading up to that, to the Void invading Runeterra. That's going to be a world war, and way worse than the Black Mist currently going on. My bet is they're saving it for the MMORPG, that's when the Watchers or some of them will break free and bring the Void into Runeterra like Icathia.
What if the face is the mask of Kindred? When the watcher saw the dreams of people, they mustve have watched their last moment with kindred too when some died in the ice?
No, Kindred and other spirits are confirmed to be just spirits who guide the dead to the afterlife. They only affect mortals who have souls, stuff such as Watchers and Celestials don't have even have a soul to begin with, since their true forms are basically their souls and they instead need to create a physical body to interact with Runeterra.
I had a really good idea. The watchers just want to sleep, that’s pretty lazy, it’s choosing not to grow and evolve like every human should. Yeah they’re not humans, but that’s what sentience is, understanding you can’t just give up and stay in bed. Ya gotta get out there and grow. The void ark could easily be understanding that the light, it’s good, being awake, it’s good. Granted that’s a huge feat. Getting someone who doesn’t want to grow to understand that it’s the best thing for them. But it would be awesome to actually get some more void champions
What are gods themselves if not greater spirits. Certainly Volibear, Ornn, Anivia and Kindred, may have different origins than a lesser spirit like Janna, however, if we assume Janna can accumulate enough followers and that her religion grows, we cannot say they she wouldn't herself become a 'god' on par with the Freljordian gods.

Without arms, how else would they default dance over the corpses of their enemies?
i think the part about the etherfiend only being able to prey on the weak and the fading is confirmed because it is basically a big vulture, which i think feed on the dead and weak
maybe you said it idk but i felt cool when realizing it lolol
The watcher: WHY DO YOU HAVE ARMS NECRIT
if i remember correclty in rea life thrall in ancient norwegian means slave
Well, they are. That's why trundle had a quote say something like "They are no longer slave"' or something like that.
Obviously he has arms to play with the new cards.
the watcher description, it is chilling
Nekrit. Please sort your lore playlist by oldest to newest. I'm getting carpel tunnel from moving these videos into a playlist of my own to do just that... your making binging your videos REALLY hard here XD
What if the horns design was some sort of protection to protect the minds of lassandra’s people. Because the watchers could corrupt their minds
It’s 2022 now with the release of Bel-Veth champion. I’m now watching this old video and now realizing why she has an artificial face. It’s because she took reference from humans!
It's kind of funny to see Necrit descending into madness at the end there talking about The Watchers, you can hear the confusion in his voice.
Maybe you could make a video on what the watchers true goals are and how their actions fit into their greater goals
Isn't the watchers true goal is to destroy the physical realm so that they can go back to sleep?
yo this is totally the future when a Watcher breaks out. Next LoL event.
just toss in vayne she deals true% damage, gib her guinsoo and 3 autos, no problem.
@@etherealcat4447 so the watcher starts imitating that? nope
@@etherealcat4447 bruh what the XD you are right thou
Imagine how many popular anime series will be surpassed if the entire lore of league gets an anime adaptation
now we have an answer why the watcher is shaped like it is here. love lore!
Ok, i´m a very Lore crazy person, and i have to say the way you talk about the storys and the whole conection between the cards and stuff i love it.... i have your vids running in the background no matter what i do ... keep it up...
Also Kindred and the wolf both have masks so the mask mother could be their mother from the aspect of nurtering ? Idk just and idea
tbh I think a void event would've been more interesting than the shadow isles event going on right now
I guess the fading icon is like the ferry man for league
The tentacles around the face of the watcher reminds me of nagakaborous. We have very little info on what is considered to be one of the oldest gods so it got me thinking. Is there a possibility that the bearded lady is a rogue watcher of some description?
this whole time i though the bale striders had a bird like head with horns and we were seeing a side profile of them. seeing the art with no background I now see how alien they actually are and can see why you asked riot if there was a connection
I hope you continue to cover the in game quotes of the cards because they add so much to the art and flavour text
Black ice is what you get when you get punched in the face
1:02- Or, you know, you're wrong.
imo... the best mmos are faction based (or realm vs realm as some people call it.) So having an evil playable faction is still a decent game design choice. The obvious choice for playable factions are Noxus and Demacia, but there could be more than two factions.
yeah the watcher was very tiny for some reason
What a good time to be a long lore fan of league of legends.
Is it possible that if the eye of a watcher is its actual body, and the transformation of mimicry started when they entered the mortal realm, that it was the eye itself that grew horns, hair, and arms. That would make sense with the size of this watcher, as it is the same size as the original eyes under ice.
Am I the only one who thought A GAME THEORY when he said “ that is just a theory “ ?
The watchers were probably copied from bale striders if draklorn soldiers were around before lissandra uses her sisters as a sacrifice, as it will make sense if that lissandra also have those horns kind of. Just like avarosa and serylda followers
I cant wait for the eventual big Void event
@@shxynee Oh yeah, that'd be a great world event.
RIP Fading Icon

It's great that you make it clear what is a theory and what is canon. Idk what some people are complaining about
the hand
Well, well, well. Look where we’ve found ourselves at again so soon.
The watcher has arms to point at the hour and minutes
One thing, it isn't just iceborn frozen with their dreams feeding the watchers. It's anyone
Wonder what would happen to the isles if Viego is defeated or if the isles get purified during a Harrowing
Lissandra: I've sacrificed everything , what have you given ?!
Watchers are kinda similar to the flood/precursors in halo
You're just being obtuse if you have to avoid the fact that the mask mother had a role in the pale man's rebirth as kindred.
The face is called epitaph, it shows him the future
source?
