I’m Mr. Beat, the dude who has made a video about every presidential election in American history. One possibility that should terrify ALL AMERICANS is the possibility of the Electoral College being tied.
Yep. Since the total number of electoral votes is an even number (538), there is an ever so slight possibility that the two major party candidates both get 269 electoral votes.
So what happens if the Electoral College is tied? Do we just have a new election? Yes. Yes we do.
In the U.S. House of Representatives. All INCOMING representatives in the House vote to break the tie. HOWEVER, that’s all within their state. Each state only gets ONE VOTE.
So what about the Vice President?
Well the Senate gets to pick that. Each INCOMING senator gets a vote. The way Congress is set up right now, we’d likely have a President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris. Woahness.
But keep in mind that it could still be tied in both the House and Senate. If that happens I suggest we just make Charles Barkley president.
#electoralcollege #uselections2024 #bidentrump
Yes, it's true.
If the Electoral College is tied, we could most definitely see Donald Trump as President and Kamala Harris as Vice President.
please no that would be terrible.
Love you're videos btw
Yeah, that would create a divided executive branch similar to the situation of "cohabitation" in semi-presidential systems.
Well thank you! And yes, I agree that would be terrible. :/@@Doom0158
I've never heard of that term in this context. ("cohabitation")@@thedarkenigma3834
Trump 2024
If Charles Barkley is president, can Shaq be his vp?
Banning big ol Women from San Antonio, and Churros for everyone 🎉.
Charles Barkley would probably be a better president than either Trump or Biden. And Shaq would be infinitely better than Kamala Harris or maybe Trump’s VP.
It would be Kenny
Will we all get one woman from San Antonio?
Na, Ernie Johnson. Shaq can be the speaker of the house, and Kenny can be secretary of the state.
I'd be happy with Charles Barkley as president
Seriously...I think he's awesome
Let's be fair, at this point, randomly picking a citizen as president would still be better than the available options.
Banning big ol Women from San Antonio 😂, and making an official Churro day actually sounds good to me.
Make Ernie VP
@@iammrbeat, Agreed, he’s a good egg 🙂
I love the lightning and screaming over the map lol
lol thanks 😊
If this happens, they should have a boxing match in the White House full TR style.
I agree
Be quiet
@kolix3008 nah I'm good
@@MrBoyce1121 Talking to EV
It's worth noting this process also applies if three or more candidates receive electoral votes and none get a majority.
After a but if research I found out that if The House and Senate is tied that means the Speaker becomes President and I believe the Senate Pro Tempore would be Veep until the voting is sorted out.
True!
Let’s hope this doesn’t occur
Indeed
Why not

The probability of an Electoral College tie in the 2024 U.S. presidential election is estimated to be around 1% to 2%
America will do anything other than just going by the popular vote💀
That map looks eerily plausible to be this years map
Trump is ahead by 30 ev in almost every poll
I doubt Nebraska 2 will go red if Wisconsin goes blue
@zoanth4 this is expected to sharply decline the closer we get to the election

Mr Beat is literally America's Dad.
Them women in San Antonio would not be happy with Charles Barkley as president😂
The comment I was looking for 😂
Wyoming will have the same power as texas or California? That’s crazy!
Indeed it is :(
Let me introduce you to the us senate
Call me crazy, but I'm in favor of 1 EV per state being the system for the standard election. 🤷
No, Wyoming has far less house representatives. You are thunking senators. Cmon basic civics.
@zflipratorrrz that's even more absurd
Wild that Wyoming and California have the same number of votes in this scenario
This is one of the things where I hate how we pretend the founders were these infallible geniuses who could foresee centuries in advance. The only way I read these rules (especially how the VP doesn't just come along with the president) is if the founders were making it up as they went and saying something like, "wouldn't it be funny if this happened".
Or, the founders compromised. And that no one was happy with the results, but this is all they could come up with.
The President and Vice President were different in the beginning. They were not a team or even friends.
Even with the founders, this already did happen. In 1796, Adams, a federalist, became President while Jefferson, a democrat-Republican, became VP.
Your a real fool if you believe that’s our cultural climate

reupload moment?
I had to since so many people were clicking away due to the music! The music in the original video apparently was the same as RUclips's survey music. lol
“Terrify” is the perfect description on if this happens. 👀😰
The Senate voting for VP makes sense, since the VP's job is basically President of the Senate.
this entire process was proven to be extremely abusable in house of cards right?
As an Auburn fan I would definitely be ok with president Sir Charles
Has that ever happened? It's like having a wild card game.
there hasn't been a tie, but the 1824 election had no majority and congress decided on the president (vice president calhoun was on multiple party tickets so he easily won, they just had to choose the president)
This occurred once in 1824. However there were a few elections where this nearly occurred, such as 1960, 1968, and 1992. In the first two the electoral college was narrowly won by a major party candidate with a Dixiecrat challenger siphoning off many electoral votes.
In 1992, Ross Perot could have caused a three way electoral college divide if he did better
Didnt an issue like this happened in 1800
The entire District of Columbia seeing how Congress can end up in a tie: We told y'all mfs that we should be a state
Run for President, Mr. Beat. Make Barkley your VP.
it would be interesting (but bad) to see what would happen, if our house was split multiple ways like it was for the speaker, if it went into a deadlock and no one got enough votes to see how that would effect our country to not have a president
I have the same solution as you but with Morgan Freeman
Your suggestion is amazing
Barkley/Beat 2024
lol
Since no one wants another Trump vs Biden election, a tie in the electoral college would be poetic.
Give one to Puerto Rico so it's an odd number
God forbid they let the people have a say in it!
They already did in this case
In all fairness with the rise of RFK Jr I wouldn't be surprised if a electoral college tie this year is at its highest chance to occur, well, ever.
If it’s 269-269 imagine the shenanigans to try and get at least 1 elector to vote for someone else and not the person that nominated them.
I agree Mr. Beast!
ok
Ah yes, the Barkley clause.
Mr. Beat for president
Nice
Quick question that I think some might be wondering:
Which candidates would the house and senate get to pick from?
Would it just be the candidates who tied? Or something
Like... any candidate who got votes or was eligible to run? 🤔
The 2 candidates who had the most electoral votes
They could only choose from those who have at least one electoral vote. So if RFK Jr. managed to win one state, he would be eligible.
@iammrbeat Okay, so... if the electoral college were tied with all votes counted,
And one "faithless elector" (as they're called) had voted for Charles Barkley,
Could the House then use that one vote from one person to announce that
The former pro basketball player would become the new President in January? 🤔
The house picks the candidates for president that received the 3 most electoral votes. The senate picks the VP candidates that received the 2 most electoral votes
I actually wanna see this
I thought Trump and Biden will duel in front of the white house. That would have been cooler lol.
Can this keep happening forever to suit people, who profit from such situation? Would be funny and terrifying.
I say just do rock paper scissor.
It's already too much like Groundhog Day... not just the movie but also the likelihood of either goofball delaying Spring due to shadows and failing vision doesn't seem far-fetched.
I support Donald Trump and Kamala Harris for 2024 😂
😆
Am I correct in remembering Bush only had 4 more in the college than Gore in 2000?

Where do you get that all incoming representatives get to vote in the House, but they must reach a consensus because their State only gets 1 vote? That’s not what it says at all!
Here’s what it actually says:
[Article 2 Section 1
“if there be more than one who have such Majority, and have an equal Number of Votes, then the House of Representatives shall immediately chuse by Ballot one of them for President; and if no Person have a Majority, then from the five highest on the List the said House shall in like Manner chuse the President. But in chusing the President, the Votes shall be taken by States, the Representation from each State having one Vote; A quorum for this Purpose shall consist of a Member or Members from two thirds of the States, and a Majority of all the States shall be necessary to a Choice.”]
Notice it says that the quorum for the process of choosing is “a member or members from 2/3 of the States”, so there could only be 50, or as few as 34, representatives present, and the State only gets 1 vote. Who determines how that State will cast their 1 vote? It’s not the representative present, it’s that member’s State Legislature, The People of that State in their Collective Capacity” assembled as that States Most Numerous Legislative Branch! And you have totally overlooked the other requirement; the top 3 on the aggregate ranked list for President, and the Top 2 on the aggregate list for Vice President are considered for the States to determine the choices by vote, 1 vote per State, and a majority of the States is necessary to the choice.
Where are the lists indicating all those receiving votes, the number of votes they received, and for which office as is required by the 12th Amendment of the Constitution of the United States?
That should be your first clue that the Electoral College is invalid. It does not meet the requirements of Article 2 Section 1 or the 12th amendment of the Constitution of the United States!
All those women down in San Antonio won’t be happy if Charles becomes president iykyk
If it’s tied imo the popular vote should decide it
Matt is my 4th cousin 5x removed of husband of 8th cousin 4x removed
I’d vote for the Round Mound of Rebound.
Eeny meeny miney moe
My brother in law used to look like Charles Barkley so if he were still around today, I think he would totally be down for your proposal.
Give us the win-loss states that would give the tie.
What if the senate is equally divided for the vice president? Do the outgoing or incumbent vice president breaks the tie?
It has a 50 percent chance this November
I'd be perfectly fine with Chuck as president.
Nah guys let’s just make MrBeat president. Then as president he would teach everyone about the elections.
Chuck will pass a bill immediately to decrease food consumption for San Antonio women
Wouldn't it make more sense to defer to the popular vote in this instance? And every instance after, abandoning the unintuitive electoral college?
I decide
MrBeast?!
Or death battle, only the strongest leads. 😃
I have a feeling that 2024 could be a contingent election
this is why the 2 party system exists btw
Okay now a real question to break our brains: What if a state's house delegation ties on how to cast their vote? Prior to the 2023 Congress, Michigan had 14 seats. What if they're evenly split? How do they decide how to cast Michigan's singular vote?
Also, couldn't the VP break a hypothetical tie in the Senate? Lol questions are fun
For the 1st question, the answer is simple: if a state delegation ties, they simply cast no vote, which adds to the possibility of neither candidate receiving a majority of states.
For the 2nd question: it’s highly debated among constitutional scholars due to the wording but due to the current Supreme Court, if VP Kamala Harris attempted such a move in the event of the next Senate being a perfect 50-50 tie (which isn’t that unlikely), the Supreme Court will likely rule against her thus resulting in a continued deadlock. Id such a situation continues until Inauguration day, the Speaker of the House is empowered to be Acting President until either a VP and President qualifies
Does anyone know the movie where this happened I forgot the name ! 😢
We could just increase the size of the electoral college. Maybe to like 300 million or so
There are 435 members of The House of Representatives. It's not possible for an election in the House to be a tie. The Senate is another story. There are 100 Senators, but if (and only if) there's a tie of 50 each, the President of the Senate (the Vice President) steps in to cast the deciding vote. There are no ties. :)
I should add that there are 435 voting members of The House of Representatives. No ties, no way. :)
@@oldsguy354
He already said that each state only have 1 vote in both Reps and Senate
So basically like how you choose the Reps but instead with the Reps for the state vote instead of the voters for the district Reps
@@ddddirge Well I'll be darned. I looked it up and Mr Beat is correct. Each state gets one vote in The House. It appears they went out of their way to circumvent the elimination of the possibility of a tie vote (on anything) in The House of Representatives. We would have been better off if they left Congress to their normal rules on voting.
I stand corrected.
I tgunk charles barkley is just the least controversial person he could come up
It would be interesting to see the votes from states with an equal number of democrats and republicans in their house delegation.
269
Not nice
Is there any difference between a 269-269 tie and say a 267-255-16 result with a third candidate? Or is it handled exactly the same way?
No difference, anyone who did not receive a majority of Electoral votes regardless will result in a contingent election in the Houss

Sure
You americans need to think of a way to decide on a third party person, and agree to vote that person. With the power of the internet, you should be able to break the two party religion that's going on over there.
Isn't this sth similar to what happened in house of cards?
The electoral college has some flaws, but it’s fine… Or is it?

Reason number 294,836 to get rid of the electoral college;
What's more scary is that the president and vice president could technically be from different parties.
Historically that's happened a few times without incident
