- Jim Hagerman has always been his own man in the world of pedal design - and today's offering is probably the best example yet of him taking a concept and really putting his own unique stamp on it.
Enter the TUBEKLØN - yes folks, Jim has put a tube into a Klon!!
Long gone are the 'mythical' Germanium diodes; the clean boost mode; and the rudimentary Low Pass Filter. All of the clipping here is being done by a vacuum tube; you get a 'proper' tone control; the internal charge pump (like the original circuit) ensures a good amount of level & headroom; and - most impurely - it's bright orange! All whilst retaining the same tonal characteristics that have caused people to lose their minds over those giant Gold and Silver horsie boxes. Cool, eh?
What do you think? Satisfyingly squishy tones? Or are you in the OG camp? Comment below!
Guitar is a Fender Partscaster Strat w/ Mark Foley 60's Pre-CBS pickups. Amp is a Dr Z EZG-50 running into a Zilla Studio Pro 2x12 cabinet loaded with Celestion AlNiCo Gold & G12M Heritage Greenback speakers. Recorded with Aston Spirit Condenser, '70s Sennheiser MD441 and sE RNR1 ribbon mics, with a Schoeps CMC6 room mic. Spring reverb is a Dr Z Z-Verb unit.

Sounds nice n beefy
Best Klon I've heard.
Nice hairy funk tone. Stones-ey tones. Me likes it. Would sound cool with a phaser or wah. Maybe even a fuzz. It would seem to pair well but it sounds boss on its own.
Sounds good
Hello...
Good sound....🎉🎉🎉❤
Love it! But…..the small knobs could and does pose potential issues on stage to see. Not a deal killer but something to think about.
For me small knobs are a deal killer, especially on such a large pedal.
I had a lot of reservations myself, but I have to ask - how often do you change KLON settings during a gig?
Hell you could put regular sized knobs probably right on the knobs they provide or just on the knob you adjust the most
Reminds me of the 80s TC Electronics compressor with the little overdrive knob you could add a little gainy sound to. I think the TC sounds better in fact
It sounds really really good. Like others have said, the size of the knobs is what puts me off a little bit but anyway. I would love to hear this pedal in front of a cooking Marshall
Please do follow up vid with a Les Paul 👏👏
Hmm, fuzz without a "farty" bottom end, at least when fed by single-coil pickups
🤘👍🏿
Did you look at the Creamery hum bucking toasters, any thoughts on those? Also, flat wound or round wound strings? And lastly, did you know the older Rics have tuners made by Schaller that are considered not as good as the recently made Gotoh Ric tuners, it would be interesting to try these to see what difference there is.
Very cool Joe! Thanks for sharing!
Side note, do you still have your Mazerati?
Yep I do - recorded with it yesterday in the ES-330 video that's just gone live; killer amp :-)
@@JoePerkinsMusic cool. I got one too! It’s really great!
Sounds great.
Did you try the Ric?
It’s a pass for me, that tube is just for the writing in the front
What makes you say that? It does all the clipping instead of diodes which does change the sound quite a bit.
@soundknight If you are going to throw around accusations you should at least try to back them up.
Why are you so affected
