i want to know what Zoness looked like before. Judging by Falco's reaction (the only time he is legitimately upset) and Peppy's shock at seeing it, i wonder how beautiful it was before.
The route I always pick for when I want tons of action is this: - Corneria on Hard Path - Sector Y - Reroute to Katina - Reroute to Sector X - Macbeth on Hard Path - Area 6 - Venom Alt. It makes you feel like you are part of the Cornerian army going on a series of defense and sabotage missions. It's great.
That final escape sequence and the appearance of Fox’s dad got me so emotional as a kid. I definitely cried and wrote about it in my journal, haha. Heck I’m trying not to tear up now. Very good memories, and glad to have re-experienced this with you :)
"Follow me son. You have become a skilled pilot. I am so proud of you" can only imagine Fox McCloud tearing up seeing his dad one last time. A very touching moment. Sorry for the rambling.
IKR! Fox's parents are dead in canon as the comics explained how his mother died. But its ok though. He has a new family now with Peppy Falco Krystal and of course Slippy. They are his family in a way.
i used to love doing score runs of this game, even though I can't really remember what my high score was. Katina was always the run killer because it was so easy to lose your wings. Wish I had known about all the Zoness tricks back then, but alas, it was '97, so no internet for us. I'd definitely love to see more runs/routes of this 'cause you're extremely good at it! I never button mashed to rapid fire in this game though 'cause it seemed like holding the button and just releasing it briefly every half a second or so worked just as well. Like each press would shoot something like 3 lasers in rapid succession. I don't know if that works on all versions of the game though.
I will be covering all planets, followed by a proper score run as Part 5 of this LP. That laser thing definitely does work, but I guess I never bothered to learn the rhythm before it starts to charge. Unfortunately, my score run coming in a few days is a little bit cranky and critical of my mistakes, as I can be a bit of a perfectionist. I did post commentary over it, and it should be useful to anyone who hasn't already studied up the "speedrun" level score runners. I'm definitely stuck in the 2060-2075 range and think I've hit my max potential. It starts to be not fun retrying over and over just for 3-5 more hits.
Hey Bill, the Narrator guy who has the voice you wants name is Jay Green. And he was also the narrator for my SS book in school. I heard his voice today and looked it up, it was him. I noticed it right away.
On Star Fox Adventures, Slippy is voiced by a guy, Chris Seavor, who voiced Conker in Diddy Kong Racing and Conker's Bad Fur Day. He also voiced Peppy Hare in the same game.
I was very interested in James McClouds existence there bc it surprised me to see him and at 51:30 you can see a shooting star across the screen above the ship which proves that’s him flying off and he’s still alive
I was playing Star Fox 64 yesterday and I tried that bomb move on Andross' eyes before fighting the brain immediately afterwards and it worked! The only difference is I used the brake instead of doing a somersault. Thank you so much, Bill for showing me that new move! You are a very nostalgic gamer! 😉👍
I just wanted to say this because you didn't mention it when you were in Sector Z but you can actually fly into the back end port of the Great Fox for a repair if you lose too much health!
I always played what I thought was the most cinematic route..... Meteo, fortuna, solar, Macbeth, area 6 and venom hard! Love this game and the soundtrack especially area 6 and wolfs theme! 👍👍👍
I have heard nothing else from Falco since I was a kid shouting "Fox! You suppose to shoot them ALL!?" I'm assuming this is we're I screwed up all my life.
Your playthrough of Mario took me way back to my childhood, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I’m very happy you play these games and that I found your channel. Keep it up.
Holy crap you're good at this game.I need to learn how to play this good. After watching the runaway guys play through this game, its nice to watch someone rip right through this game.
I don't know what's up with all the Star Fox 64 recent uploads by some youtubers. Seems like it took a whooping 23 years to see how good this game is. Truly a masterpiece. Btw, good run! The hard route is my favorite.
Hackers discovered every voice line uncompressed as part of the recent sketchy/illegal N64 data leak, so that's why Star Fox 64 briefly resurfaced, among other classics. It's definitely neat what has been found, but technically it wasn't supposed to be found the way it was.
I was gonna ask if you’d do a star fox 64 play through. So glad you decided to! I loved this game growing up! I was blown away the first time I went on the hard route and fought Andross and he was the brain. Amazing game and very nostalgic! Thanks for sharing as always man! Keep it up!
One of my favorite N64 games. I still have my original cartridge. You should do Kazooie or Mario Sunshine next. Or if you want another N64 FPS, Turok could be a fun LP.
Hey Bill, I can totally relate when you sound all excited over Star Fox 64 and Wave Race 64 while you get tired of Super Mario 64 lol thanks for the lp!
Back in 95 or 96 Nintendo had a small kiosk set up for public beta tests of Star Fox's Multiplayer in my local mall. I remember playing the mode where your on foot and that they were mentioning they weren't sure if they were going to include it in the final game. Seems odd to me they had the kiosk in such a small town but I was 6 at the time and they were giving out pretty big gift bags for participating.
Hey brother, just wanted to say I'm new to the channel but have enjoyed your Star Fox content immensely. Downloaded Project 64 and SF64 recently because of your videos and the overwhelming nostalgia I felt watching them. I"m working my way through the medals right now and your videos are both helpful and entertaining. Cheers friend!
Thanks for the ride I just finished watching your play through! I just also finished playing on the switch and man I missed this game such great memories from my childhood playing this with my brothers and finding the new paths.
I'm not trying to be weird here, okay, but I like it better when you're happy, because you're very obvious about it when you're enjoying yourself, for one, but your more natural charms come out, too. I think you'd make for a good friend for pretty much anyone because you're easy-going when you're happy.
It's two bytes if you store the two bytes as separate values and add them together*, but an unsigned two-byte integer can go up to 65,535, so I can guarantee you that's not how they did it. A 9-bit integer (that is, a one-byte integer plus an extra bit) would cap at 511, but that still seems like a strange way to approach it because then what are they doing with the rest of the byte that the ninth bit came from? Not to even mention the fact that the CPU has a 64-bit word length, which is where the console’s name comes from, so data isn't just stored by bytes, but in groups of 8 bytes, meaning it's unlikely there was any reason to use an 8-bit integer in the first place. I'm deeply perplexed. *Actually no it isn't, because an unsigned 8-bit integer can't do 1-256, it's strictly 0-255, so there's still no world in which 16 bits caps at 511
The reason for the 511 hit count is that they only allocated 2 bytes to hold the hit data. 1 byte is 256 and 2 is 512 and then you have to subtract 1 for 0. If you care/see this over 2 year after posting the video.
511 is probably the max due to size restrictions in memory. 2^9 is 512 so you can have a range from 0-511. That number will be a string of 9 numbers (either 0 or 1; binary). I would assume there is just that restriction using binary with the code or hardware of the N64.
Both 511 and 999 are strange caps. Yes, 511 is the capacity of an unsigned 9-bit integer, but 9-bit integers aren't really a thing. You could make one out of a standard 8-bit integer plus a boolean, but that seems like a very strange way to go about things, especially because data is stored in groups of eight bits, known as bytes, and you have to use an entire byte. In fact, the Nintendo 64 has a 64-bit processor, which is where the name of the console comes from, so you have to use groups of eight bytes at a time. It's possible the dev team used the rest of the eight byte word for some other piece of game state, that really must be what happened because I can't think of any other way to end up with a cap of 511. As for a cap of 999, that suggests that that version of the game was storing the score as a text string, which doesn't make any sense at all, especially if the other version of the game was designed to be so memory efficient that the dev team went to the effort to hack together a 9-bit integer, because storing that three digit text string would take four bytes. It would also incur a bunch of processing overhead to convert to an integer for purposes of updating the score and then converting back to text to display it. I'm deeply confused about what happened and I'm really hoping somebody in the comments here has any idea and can fill me in.
After watching the Mario 64 playthrough and seeing this pop up the only thing I could thing of is “I’m comin’ for yas!” Although tbf he sais that in every playthrough at some point hahaha. Let’s go Bill
To get on-foot mode you must get a medal on Expert mode Venom (either stage). Getting all Expert medals is what gets you that new title screen shown in the video, where Fox gets all close to the camera with his goofy face. My highest score of all time was only 2007, in normal mode, using this route: Meteo, Katina, Sector X, Macbeth, Area 6. Why's my score not higher? Two reasons. One, I suck. Two, I got sick of resetting every single time something went terribly wrong. Always trying for a high score whenever I play this, but now it's on a more casual basis.
I feel your pain. I have a score run coming up in part 5, and it's definitely not something I could keep doing. Retrying levels over and over to try and have a near flawless score kills the fun after a while.
Man this is another hype train ride. I can say once I actually saw slippy shoot down Andrew. I just about had a heart attack that he actually did something besides give boss health.
@@GoodOldDaysGaming i have only ever seen it the one time. The funny part was it was just before dnd, so most of the group was there talking about which of the other pilots are good or bad. Guess he heard us saying he was the worst and had to shut us up.
Please do more Star Fox 64 videos! I know it's kind of limited in what you can really do, but even if it's just a couple runs every now and then that'd be groovy.
I'm deeply curious about the 511 point limit, because that's a strange number from a computer science standpoint as it's the limit of an unsigned 9-bit integer, and bits are organized in groups of 8. It must also be a version thing, as speculated in this video, bc I've seen a video of a run at GDQ (by Zallard1, I think?) that exceeded 511 on Area 6, and I've seen a TAS that got 999 on Venom. 999 is also a strange limit, as it suggests the number is stored as a string rather than an integer, which seems quite inefficient to me.
So, how long has Nintendo had the theme of "eye, eye, hand, hand" bosses? You see it here, you see it in various Zelda games, you see it in Smash Bros with Master Hand (minus the eyes, then), so on. It seems like a format they like using for some reason.
When you said it wouldn't be different well if you play certain characters during certain parts makes it hard to make sure fox would be available at the end but they could just pull a slippy before tetteria, otherwise other easter eggs and different routes would be screwed
Honestly I don’t know why the hard path is called the hard path because I find it way easier than some other planets especially on expert mode. Facing Starwolf at Venom rather than the onslaught of regular enemies is just way easier.
I just realised that I have only ever accidentally shot down slippy. Am I bad? On a side note, cane toads are a horrid pest in Australia. Maybe that was a subconscious thing
You had to get all medals in the game, then you could play on foot; Hard Path Venom was the most difficult because you additionally required everyone surviving, the Star Fox team members frequently die quickly from Hard Venom Star Wolf Squadron if not handled immediately.
How many times you tried a scoring run on expert with the red route my best is 2 , 388. And with my highest at Corneria being 321. And I get over 330 at sector Y with getting as high as 340 and aquas my best is 326
Hooray, more StarFox from you! Is there a chance you'll ever play Zero for us too? I tried watching a no-commentary longplay, but i got confused cuz there's too much going on adn I lose track.

Slippy is apparently canonically a male, according to in-game dialogue.
You had to get all medals in the game, then you could play on foot; Hard Path Venom was the most difficult because you additionally required everyone surviving, the Star Fox team members frequently die quickly from Hard Venom Star Wolf Squadron if not handled immediately.
I haven't played this game since I was a kid. I wonder if I would be better at it now.
Good video bro memories
DANG DEPLOY IT NOW
Dang man I got a high score of 1600 and thought I was awesome! Bill gets 1645..."that score sucks!" 😭😭😭
I'm comin for ya's
Iconic
lol its funny those "slow downs" are now called "frame drops"
I didn't know the voice actor of peppy hair died from Covid.
How many times you tried a scoring run on expert with the red route my best is 2 , 388. And with my highest at Corneria being 321. And I get over 330 at sector Y with getting as high as 340 and aquas my best is 326
anyone know how to not lock on with the switch controller?
Big like dropped
I would watch you play this going down all the paths
Stay tuned!
Hooray, more StarFox from you! Is there a chance you'll ever play Zero for us too? I tried watching a no-commentary longplay, but i got confused cuz there's too much going on adn I lose track.
