I loved both. They are different in timbre, intonation and some of their mannerisms (for example, in the JP dub, Katt sounds more "sensual", ROB64 and the "Secret Weapon" sound like your typical androids from the animes of the time, and Andross sounds a lot more menacing with his much deeper, almost robotic voice), but they still manage to fit the characters somehow. If anything, JP original sounds a lot more serious and emotional, they were probably trying to make it more immersive by making it feel like an anime shonen or a mecha sort of anime, it gives me very Gundam vibes.

The JP version obviously has better acting (although, not as 'better' as I think some people act, English VAs do very well as well), but I mean that's to be expected since they literally have dedicated schools for voice acting in Japan. No such luxury for English VAs.
I think I like the English voices better overall though. Japanese has betting voice ACTING but not necessarily voices. The English version everyone has some sort of quirk that makes them feel like they're from different walks of life--Fox is nasally, Falco is rude and from the Bronx, Peppy has a southern drawl. They all feel like their own people, not just characters. The JP version, on the other hand, I feel like I've heard Fox and Peppy's "characters" all over the place in anime--they just sound less distinct, they sound like anime character archetypes.
As an example: in ENG, when Wolf shows up, he sounds taunting and cheeky, like he knows he's a burden to Fox and it amuses him that they cross paths so much. Fox in turn speaks with a tone of, "Oh great, THESE guys again", noticeably sarcastic and just about having had enough of this BS.
In JP, on the other hand, Wolf sounds angry and aggressive, like he's ready to kill his rival once and for all. Fox then in turn sounds surprised ("Nani?!") and distraught that they've run into them.
The latter feels like a scripted encounter between generic hero character and villain of the week, the former feels like a natural moment between two people with a history together. The Japanese delivery feels more dramatic because of being taken so seriously, but the former makes the characters feel more alive and not just like archetypes.
tl;dr acting ability =/= better overall; more serious =/= better overall. It's not just 'nostalgia', there are very legitimate reasons to prefer the English version. It really is just personal preference

I mean, MOST of the best English voice actors are just professionally trained theatre actors. So it's not quite the same as a dedicated VA school, but it's hardly far off the mark.

Don't forget this was 1996. Voice acting in video games was extremely new and English voice acting for anything that wasn't domestically produced animation was highly likely to be terrible. In very rare instances it was passable, but that was about as good as it got. Compare the first Resident Evil to this and you'll know what I'm talking about. The fact that the English dub here is of actual quality (with some expected cringe,) was almost unheard of during that time: English voices that didn't completely suck and didn't distract from the game itself.

I like JP Fox's reaction to Star Wolf showing up. In English he responds as if they're just a nuisance, which while amusing does somewhat undercut the threat they're supposed to present, especially since both encounters (Fichina and Bolse, his dialogue is different for the Venom fight) sees their arrival complicate an already difficult situation (handling the bomb and taking out Bolse's core). Meanwhile in Japanese he comes off as genuinely alarmed at their sudden presence ("What? Star Wolf?!") which does a better job at selling them as serious opponents.

3:36 Oh! Would you now, Katt? Like, I know she's a cat, but damn! lmao
Anyway, same as part 1, the English version is not bad at all, but some characters feel more sarcastic in English. It's odd, because they basically say the same lines, but the way it's delivered makes them sound different.
Special highlight goes to Bill here. In English he has this air of "I got this, I deal with grunts like these daily". But in the original he sounds extra focused on not messing up. Which gives a contrast between him and the Star Fox team, feeling like a rookie trying to live up to others' expectations vs seasonal veterans. They don't feel like they have the same wave lenght as in the English version, and I don't think they should, given how much less useful Bill is compared to other allies.

    I don't like JP Katt
It would be perfect for me if all the robots spoke japanese and everyone else spoke english. I really dislike the monotone robot. It's usually fine but once you hear a more expresive robot you just don't want the monotone one, especially when their behavior is not that monotone.
I am glad to recognize this because I was starting to think I had been getting more biased towards jp voicelines in videogames.

If only there was maybe one that acts as an adaptation of the first and second star fox game, the first shows Fox and his motley crew seeking out to fight Andross, with the eventual timeskip to the second game where now things are more dire with the Venomian army preparing to lay siege to Corneria and along with that, is the first debut of Star Wolf, where in 64 it's technically the second time both Star Fox and Star Wolf clashed through out the events of 64.

-The Sector X boss sounds like she has the same voice filter on her that Delfine had in Outlaw Star whenever she was in the tube thingie in The Outlaw Star itself
-Katt sounds sultry in both languages, love it.
-Bill def sounds much more like a straight-laced military pilot in the Japanese version but I'd be lying if I said I didn't get a kick out of Bill's surfer boy accent every time I heard it.
    - James McCloud's Japanese VA put in the performance of a lifetime, my God.
-General Pepper's VA also puts in a great, straight-laced performance, but I like the English VA's "Fatherly General Patton" take on it too.
-The only one I didn't outright like was Japanese Star Wolf. Maybe it's because I was super drawn to those characters as a wee lad, but I think their English VAs give them unforgettable personalities, where I feel like you could hear the Japanese voices in just about any gang of hoodlums from any anime ever.

Bill and Fox almost have these old allies but equals feel to them in the dub, something like Goku and Piccolo, while the original Japanese makes Bill sound like he looks up to Fox like Krillin and Goku

Impression I get off of every Star Wolf member based on their voices
    English
    - Wolf - James Bond Villain
    - Leon - Maniacal Individual
    - Pigma - Cartoon Goofball
    - Andrew - Whiny Kid
    Japanese
    - Wolf - Dangerous Fighter
    - Leon - Intelligent Person
    - Pigma - Big Bruiser
    - Andrew - That weird kid in class

@@SorcererLance Perhaps "maniacal" might be a strange way to put it, but definitely someone who's rather sadistic (with his slow speech, less aggressive tone, and all in the context of someone who's out for blood), but I'm not sure if his personality is clouding my view. That said, I will concur that it does sound a bit like James Bond villains

1:57 I would have liked to see the difference when the secret weapon robot asks "WHERE IS THE CREATOR". In English, Fox responds like he was deaf when, based on context, he should instead of sounded confused.

Still no Slippy? Also for English Katt sounds like the same voice as Slippy.
Also I never owned the game, but played it a fair bit at a relative's house and friend's house and watched a friend and their brother play it quite a lot and I don't ever recall Katt existing. I guess it's due to being a later level and I guess a path that I wouldn't/couldn't take much.

Japanese Leon sounds like a Yaoi character. And Andross is expected to be feared, considering he was once the King of the Iron Fist Tournament as well as a Shichibukai before that was dissolved.
(JP Andross was voiced by Daisuke Gori, aka the original voices of Heihachi Mishima and Jinbei)

Star fox adventures didn’t do any Japanese VA due to time constraints and Rareware being bought out by Microsoft by the time development was wrapping up. That’s just my guess lol
For the later games that did do both Japanese and English voice acting, they all sound pretty consistent and its not really all that interesting to compare.
One interesting thing I want to point out in the Japanese version of Star Fox Assault is that the mission briefing cutscenes have more detailed animations. Specifically characters blink whereas the English versions don’t. No idea why it’s like that.

    • @HylianWindRider

@@zattoguy Fron what I read they don't blink because they didn't bother to redo the lip syncing for the English localization.

    4. Peppy = James = Sector Y's Boss

I still don't quite like that the Japanese voices kinda always sound too similar. I don't know if there aren't many accents in Japan or if they just like their archetypes, but there comes a point where certain types of characters just sound the same. Like Pigma having the typical Japanese goon accent, or the robots having childish voices.
Instead, in the English dub you can tell characters come from different places, or have a greater variety of characters. And I noticed that in this game since I was a kid, even when my first language is Spanish and I didn't understand a damn thing about the game xd

gosh, Andrew sounds just as dopey in japanese as he does in English. Interesting that his english name is a direct translation from what it is in Japanese; I wonder why?... like, in the context of the Star Fox universe, Andrew (Oikonny) is a really boring common first name that bears no resemblance to his animal type like Falco, Pigma, etc., but by that being his name he fits the dopey "uncle's nephew trying to show off" trope... just wonder if there's Japanese influence or culture reference that is lost as to the specific choosing of the name (I care too much about this because I've always had a grudge against him sharing my first name but seeming so stupid, lol)
