Well damage my ignorance, I learn something new everyday! If this is not interesting I don't know what is. The accent is so similar to Jaimacan. I have to now do more research. You are so beautiful Wah! TFS!
Wah Wah all along I thought you were from Africa!! I have recently met a black person from Guatemala and was in shock, I had no idea Guatemala had black people I had to Google it and found out about Garafuna.im almost in tears that that part of history was not taught. Thank you Wah I love you.
Wow I'm really happy to see this ! Even though I'm not garifuna. You'd be surprised how much of your culture is similar to those of the diaspora. We have this music we call, Los Palos. Which is pretty much the same music as Punta. Great vid. Hope to see more about your American experience and your culture.
Wahima, I loved this. U brought back some memories. One other thing. We have Garifunas in Nicaragua and Dominica also. I'm sure many of the surrounding countries of St. Vincent has Garifunas in it. They simply need to identify themselves. I c u r dancing to the music of ur dad's old group which Sydney was also a part of.
Omg!!!! You're garifuna! I'm dark skinned not garifuna but my family is Honduran and I have an aunt who is garifuna! Lol the random accent so used to that !! New subbie btw after seeing your cover girl 3 in 1 foundation! Love u and your confidence!
Very cool. Both parents from Honduras. I went last summer and loved it. Girl, that one uncle...I met a new cousin I didn't know about when I was there.
One thing please, Garifuna were not African slaves. They were free Africans who were kidnapped and sold into slavery. There is a distinction here. When it comes to Punta here is one I blagged from some channel - ruclips.net/video/4aEVlT3Q2H8/видео.html
To say they were African slaves is to imply that their social status in Africa was that of being slaves before being transported to the Caribbean. It assumes that they themselves identified with the slave category they were placed in and that those in the present accept the social order their ancestors were placed in. Accepting that status dehumanizes them and makes their present day descendants second class citizens in the Americas. It makes you out as being descended from a group in America were not considered "a people", and who are on the social level are not entitled to the full privileges and rights others are entitled to.
sporo2000 So it's semantics we are talking about? When someone says 'African Slaves' I don't think 'people who were slaves whilst living in Africa'. I think 'people who were stolen from Africa and forced into slavery'. And it would be pure vanity to be offended because you wouldn't want people to think you are descended from less than human, humans. Pure rubbish. So are American Slavery descended people to feel ashamed of their ancestry? Slavery is wrong. No matter the circumstances and not the fault of the people who are brought or born to it. FromAncient Egypt to now. It's wrong. And nothing to be ashamed of if it's in your lineage. Thanks for educating me :-)
It is not just about semantics. Our choice of words influences and fixates thought patterns, and sometimes we are not aware that the whole activist industry related to black people which is driven and directed by whites gets us to adopt speech and by extension thought patterns which are harmful to us. The term "African slaves" makes African synonymous with slaves as though slavery was an inherent condition of African people which carried over into the Americas.
I went to Belize this year and learning about the Garifuna was wonderful...especially being African myself! Happy day to you and our people!;)

Why is that distinction necessary/ important?
