I really want to try a paw paw now. This video made me chuckle at one point though because I'm not watching them in order so when Andrew doubts himself about being able to make fire, it was funny to already know that in a few years after this video he's now a pro at lighting fires!

Though the pawpaw is generally unknown to the American public, it is the largest edible fruit native to the US. The fruit is indigenous to 26 states from northern Florida to Maine and west to Nebraska. Fossil records indicate that the papaw's forebears established themselves in North America millions of years before the arrival of humans. American Indians extensively used the pawpaw and introduced it to European explorers. As a much loved fruit, European settlers named towns, creeks, and islands after the pawpaw. Today, pawpaws are primarily eaten in very rural areas, and most Americans only know of the fruit from the traditional folk song, "Way Down Yonder in the Paw Paw Patch."
The pawpaw plant is found most commonly near riverbanks and in the understory of the rich eastern US forests. The Pawpaw has a creamy, custard-like flesh with a tropical flavor, which is often described as a combination of mango, pineapple, and banana. More than 50 commercial nurseries market pawpaw seeds or trees in the US. The pawpaw Foundation at Kentucky State University is actively working to revive the fruit by promoting scientific research in the areas of pawpaw breeding, growing, managing, harvesting, and use.
While I was section hiking on the AT in Virginia (James River ) area we came across a Paw Paw tree. Needles to say I was the only one brave enough to try one I was very lucky that it was ripe and delicious! Thanks for the info on the Paw Paw festival. I will put that on my East coast list to attend next year. 🍻

In Los Angeles we have the theadore Payne nursery that sells native plants which are a great replacement for a lawn. Glad to see others in different states making native plants available!
You know all my life I have hated that I lived in Ohio. I always loved the thought of being above the treelines in the west and seeing the clouds below me on the top of mountains. I really enjoy watching your videos about Ohio. Though I can see you really like the west as well, you also have a curiousity of Ohio's heritage too. Definately makes me feel like im not in the complete worst place. Its cool to see the video and see signs of Hocking College. I had classes out at lake snowden for the college. Sweet stuff. Keep it up.
Native plants are the best way to garden
Friends and I plan on going to the Paw Paw Fest and camping every year but I have only been able to make it to 3 or 4 fests in my 14 years living in Athens.
Pretty much anyone that does anything local can be found there.
It's a good illustration of how a supportive local-centric community should function.
A friend of mine actually made the paw paw costume that you might have seen wandering around the event.
Anyway perhaps I will run into you guys sometime at the fest or Zaleski or maybe wandering around Wildcat Hollow.

great video!......I have planted several paw paw trees on my land in North Central Florida...they are growing well despite being at the extreme Southern edge of their range...no fruit yet, but the trees are still young and thriving!
Looks delicious! I have only ever seen more orange/yellow papaya here in Australia, which are still often referred to as paw paw...which I can see now they are not- although they are in the same family. I don't love papaya but the paw paw you guys are eating looks like something I would really love.

Paw Paw ointment is fairly popular here in Australia. In my experience, it's been good for treating sun burn, chafing and dry lips. Worth a look in my opinion.

Glad you had a great time. I'm one of the food vendors at the Pawpaw Festival and it's always great to taste the variety of Pawpaw dishes that we make for the event every year. The first time I had a custard apple was in Taiwan. Since then I've been obsessed with the different varieties! Whenever I'm on the west coast, I got to hit up Ranch 99 looking for them. And when I found out Paw Paws are the US Midwest version...🤯!! I'll definitely need to check out the festival! Do they sell Paw Paw trees? I randomly went to a farmers market in North Carolina last year and they had a few Paw Paw trees, mine is still in the pot and waiting for it to get bigger before transplanting in ground. But hoping to get another!
Pawpaw in Ohio, wow! I thought you had to go to New Guinea, or Mexico. Then again it's papaya that's in Mexico. I guess there is a pa in every country.
