Moses (Charlton Heston) parts the Red Sea for the Hebrews to escape the Egyptians' pursuit.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Based on the Holy Scriptures, with additional dialogue by several other hands, The Ten Commandments was the last film directed by Cecil B. DeMille. The story relates the life of Moses, from the time he was discovered in the bullrushes as an infant by the pharoah's daughter, to his long, hard struggle to free the Hebrews from their slavery at the hands of the Egyptians. Moses (Charlton Heston) starts out "in solid" as Pharoah's adopted son (and a whiz at designing pyramids, dispensing such construction-site advice as "Blood makes poor mortar"), but when he discovers his true Hebrew heritage, he attempts to make life easier for his people. Banished by his jealous half-brother Rameses (Yul Brynner), Moses returns fully bearded to Pharoah's court, warning that he's had a message from God and that the Egyptians had better free the Hebrews post-haste if they know what's good for them. Only after the Deadly Plagues have decimated Egypt does Rameses give in. As the Hebrews reach the Red Sea, they discover that Rameses has gone back on his word and plans to have them all killed. But Moses rescues his people with a little Divine legerdemain by parting the Seas. Later, Moses is again confronted by God on Mt. Sinai, who delivers unto him the Ten Commandments. Meanwhile, the Hebrews, led by the duplicitous Dathan (Edward G. Robinson), are forgetting their religion and behaving like libertines. "Where's your Moses now?" brays Dathan in the manner of a Lower East Side gangster. He soon finds out. DeMille's The Ten Commandments may not be the most subtle and sophisticated entertainment ever concocted, but it tells its story with a clarity and vitality that few Biblical scholars have ever been able to duplicate. It is very likely the most eventful 219 minutes ever recorded to film--and who's to say that Nefertiri (Anne Baxter) didn't make speeches like, "Oh, Moses, Moses, you splendid, stubborn, adorable fool"?

I got goosebumps when moses said that Lord of hosts will do battle for us, and water parted. I don't get chills easily from modern movies which has extreme level of vfx, but this movie gives me chills every time I saw these scenes. Praise the Lord in every situation for he is the one who fight battle for us.

I suppose in 1956-57 when this movie was first shown in movie theaters, on the big screen, and at a time when special effects weren't yet the best, this monumental scene must have gotten audiences stunned or gasping in amazement. Wow.

Let me tell you this scene never fails to amaze me. This movie was made in the fifties and to do that type of special effects is remarkable even for today. Fantastic!
Arguably the greatest scene ever captured on film. Even with today's special effects it still reigns supreme.
I would say the greatest pre-CGI effects were in the chariot race during _Ben Hur._ But this scene is amazing! Before deMille, who knew what Jello could do? 😁

I would have liked to have seen Moses depart the Red Sea in real life. That will be an awesome sight to see. Today God is still doing amazing things that words cannot comprehend. God is good.
The first time I saw this movie as a kid, I teared up when Moses split the red sea. I thought that was THE coolest thing I ever saw in the movies

2024, Who's still watching 👀 and listening 👂🎧 to this Masterpiece?! " Behold his mighty hand!" The greatest line of the greatest movie!
I watch this great movie every year when it airs on ABC, and I love every minute of it. The movie was shot in the Vistavision aspect ratio, and it looks stunning on the HDTV's that we have today. Producer and director Cecil B. Demille certainly knew what he was doing when he made this classic, and if you don't believe me, then try watching the truly wretched "Noah" that was released some years back for comparison. You can't praise Charlton Heston enough for his legendary performance as Moses.

This movie is so beautiful when the director and all those people who worked so hard to shoot this Ten Commandments. This man was training and raised up as a Prince, but GOD prepared him for this mission. Charles Heston will always be remember because of this beautiful movie 🎥.and act as Moses in this series. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren and every generations from him will always remember him.

Justin - yes, and the amazing thing is that the line is given to "the bad guy" of the film. I have a sneaking suspicion that Yul Brynner insisted on getting this line put in so that his character would be seen as courageous even though he is clearly the villain here.

The music makes this moment, from the moment Joshua yells "Praise God, and down into it!" This was the climactic moment of the film, the ultimate triumph. Very well done moment, and one that has aged wonderfully.

Aside from the beauty and brilliance of this scene (shot in the 50's!), Ten Commandments has one of the greatest scores of all time, of ALL TIME.

The prince of Egypt also has one of the most beautiful splitting of the Red Sea scenes, it took 10 animators 2 years to make that 4 minute scene.

*From what I read on a Filming website* the Red Sea parting was accomplished by filming water as it poured down two sides of a U-shaped tank, and then playing it backwards. This made the water appear to divide. The illusion of keeping the walls of water separated was accomplished by filming Jello being sliced close-up. Then double-exposing everything with live-action footage of the Israelites walking into the distance with the Egyptian chariots in pursuit.
The effects are pretty good for 1956 not gonna lie
for me without a shadow of a doubt the most breathtaking moment of cinema that I have ever seen. from Michael from Yorkshire and proud of it.
His booming voice was PERFECT for this role! Such a powerful scene.
He started experiencing trouble landing worldy roles in other films after playing Moses in this movie.

That's an impressive visual effect for 1956 and one that hasn't been outdone in the 65 years since.
Are you sure this visual effect is good. For the time of this movie it is, however saying is hasn't been out done in 65 years is nothing short of an insult to the entirety of the movie effects industry. I would dare say most movies in the last 50 years with effects are superior to this movies effects.

My mom took me to see this movie in 1956 when it was first released and we went again when they released it a second time. That parting of the Red Sea still gives me chills and has never been done better. In fact, this entire movie stands alone as the greatest version. If it is ever released again, do yourselves a favor and go see it. It is an awesome production.

Todays effects using CGi are all well and good but they’re not as creative/imaginative or as realistic. These special effects were done with REAL water and lots of it! As good as CGi has become, we can still tell when something has been created by it.
