CTS-V V2 GETS A KONG LID AND PORTED SUPERCHARGER - INSTALL AND QUICK LID COMPARISON CTSV/ZL1/KONG

  • In this video I install a ported LSA supercharger and a Kong lid. The video is a bit all over the place because the ported blower was installed first, then a week later I bought a Kong lid for $1500, so I waiting for that install so I could make one video. There has been no tune since, I just reset the ECU so things can relearn BUT I am waiting on a 1pc driveshaft before I get back on the dyno (stock driveshaft is bad, and sometimes taps the bottom of the car on low mph decel).
    Initial impressions is power delivery is smoother w/ ported blower, but real gains (or losses) won't be apparent until I get it back on the dyno. I do feel it has more power.
    Supercharger whine w/ the Kong lid is louder when cruising up to speed, but WOT it is quieter than I expected (given my experience with a kong lid on my G8 w/ stock pulleys - it was LOUD). This may because of the exhaust, but with the ZL1 lid I could hear the whine more at WOT.
    Check the end of the video for my honest opinion on the Kong lid, IATs, sound, etc...

    Nice to see another V owner tweaking the platform! FYI, my LSA stage 2 ported blower picked up almost 6mph in the 1/4 mile! That's making power!

    Thank your for sharing us your journey and input, if u could be so kind to post up the links (where we can purchase the same parts etc) on where u purchased the kong lid and driveshaft!
    Sweet ride! Also what injectors did u use? I hear idx1050 is the way to go, but I plan on running E85 from time to time, are u running E85?

    Look into a Lid spacer. It will address the air flow to cylinders 8 and 7.

  • @Laratito95
    @Laratito95 Год назад +1

    Are you running any blower spacers? Does the king lid have more clearance compared to the zl1 lid?

    • @LS3_LaFlare
      @LS3_LaFlare  Год назад

      No spacers. The Kong lid sits about the same as a LS9 lid so more clearance over the ZL1/CTSV lids.

    I think the lid design has more to go with physical space, under the windshield. V has more room then the Camaro/Vette. The aftermarket guys want to make sales so they made it work for everyone.

    Have you seen the new design by Kong? It fixes the issues with the rear cylinder not getting adequate air. Rick Crawford brought up having to trim fuel in the rear cylinder, and Kong said the new design addresses it.

    • @LS3_LaFlare
      @LS3_LaFlare  Год назад +1

      I never understood the lack of air stuff, because if you look at all the lids, the back cylinders are an afterthought. When under boost, the blower is pressurized and all the cylinders draw air as they please since boost is just excess air. That’s how I always thought about it. I’m no scientist, no engineer, and certainly not Rick. This is my second build with a Kong lid and only issue I’ve had is IAT placement. On LSA engines, hell, LSx engines in general, the rear cyl detonation (lean) issues are there, so removing fuel from cyl 7/8 is a scary thought. Again, I’m not Rick (much respect), just a self taught garage LSx swapper with an Aeronautics degree. I don’t have any mechanical experience, not a seasoned tuner etc so this is just my experience/ thoughts.

    • @LS3_LaFlare
      @LS3_LaFlare  Год назад +1

      New Kong lid looks better, and the IAT placement is perfect. I just got both of these kids hella cheap and WOT is where they shine.

      @trevorchichester8550 Год назад

      @@LS3_LaFlare I didn't know either how much of an impact it really had on the rear cylinders either, but I I have seen different reports claiming to gain small amounts with lid designs that open the rear cylinder... The way I think about it: yes, psi is an excess of air, and yes the negative space before the intake valves is pressurized, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's pressurized evenly. If I relate it to a balloon, there are parts of a balloon when inflated that are actually very low pressure. That's why you can take a needle and poke a hole at the very top of a balloon (opposite the tied off opening) without it bursting. I would guess the air after being compressed by the blower is similar. There are places that read 10-12 psi for example, but there are probably other places that read half that or even less. Kong's first lid especially, has very little to no room for air to effectively reach the rear cylinders so it's natural that that area would be under less pressure than other more easily accessible places for air to travel.
      I too am no expert. That's why videos like yours interest me.

    • @LS3_LaFlare
      @LS3_LaFlare  Год назад +2

      @@trevorchichester8550 To the balloon point… it doesn’t burst because the rubber at the ends of it is stretched out to a lesser extent vs the sides of the balloon, same reason why tape+needle doesn’t burst it, so maybe not a good example… but if we want to use a balloon for my train of thought, the pressurized air/gas mix inside is tightly packed and rapidly moving, it’d fill any void (like the supercharger runners etc), and like diffusion, quickly escaped when the intake valves open, then close.. a balloon wouldn’t pop with 8 needles, but it would pop with just one. 8cyl sucking in air pressurized at the runners. It doesn’t care about flow at this point.
      I’m sorry maybe a shitty example because I’m not well versed in this shit 😂
      But again, the map sensor on top of the lid is reading boost, so my way of thinking is the blower is a pressurized chamber and the cylinders draw in air evenly as they please, they aren’t relying on flow of air. The air is tightly packed taking up the areas between the runners. And if they were reliant on evenly flowing air, then the GM lids all obstruct flow to the rear cylinder by the mounting points if you look at them.

      Yes, they can mix and match provided you used the proper gasket.
      The only setup that would need an adapter *I THINK* is using a 2.3 LS9 supercharger with a ZL1 lid.
      On both my LSA 1.9s with kong, I used the stock orange square gasket
